Ep 67: Creative Care for Pelvic Pain w/ The Pelvic Whisperer (Therawand and Electrical Stimulation)

May is Pelvic Pain Awareness month, and I'm continuing our pain series with Elizabath Makous, AKA "The Pelvic Whisperer." Even if you don't have pain, if you appreciate creativity, bio-individuality, and getting to the ROOT of an issue, then you're going to love this interview. Elizabeth shares:

  • How to find a great physical therapist
  • The importance of differential diagnosis (in PT) and of creating individualized treatment plans
  • How Elizabeth helped design and refine Therawand tools for pelvic pain relief at-home
  • The importance of getting to know your body and how to listen to your tissues
  • Some very intimate tips about how to use tools (such as Therawand) and how to reduce fear around self-treatments and intercourse
  • Elizabeth's electrical stimulation protocol: how it's unique, and when your therapist can begin using it with you
  • The importance of patience in your healing journey (as Elizabeth states, "if you're not better in 5 visits, it doesn't mean you've failed therapy. It takes a while for a patient to get a whole program that will work for them.")
  • The importance of using support systems such as a great physical therapist AND home treatment options (like Therawand, FemFusion programs, etc) so that you can go home and not feel helpless
  • Her overarching message of hope: don't give up!!!

  • Why treating pelvic floor muscle tension rectally is often the BEST and most effective approach
  • How long does it take to relieve pelvic pain symptoms? ...And the importance of being REALISTIC when it comes to treatment time...
  • What to expect from a manual exam on the first visit to your physio
  • Types of manual techniques your physio might employ, and also techniques that you can do at home on your own
  • The use of a Gua Sha tool for perineal release

If you know me, you know that I love hip circles... And so this interview with Jennifer Sobel was a real treat!

Jennifer has been a professional belly dance instructor and performer for 16+ years, and she now educates and empowers women that they don’t need to just accept a weak pelvic floor, bladder leakage or anything less than feeling in love with their bodies and themselves. There is a FUN and empowering solution to pelvic floor strength: belly dance! In this episode, you will learn:

  • The ”happy accident” that led Jennifer to discover that belly dance naturally strengthens the pelvic floor and can help relieve incontinence.
  • The scientific research study that shows belly dance to be an effective strategy for strengthening the pelvic floor and relieving stress incontinence. (Yes, they actually did a research study on this in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science!)
  • The history of belly dance and its connection with preparing a woman for childbirth.
  • How belly dance movements work and their unique ability to both relax and strengthen the pelvic muscles.

Ep 57: Making the Surgery Decision (Rectocele Repair Part 1 w/ Kim Vopni)

In this powerful episode, you will be invited into a VERY PERSONAL STORY about the long road to rectocele recovery, and why Kim Vopni (AKA "Vagina Coach") ultimately made the decision to undergo surgery for rectocele repair. Kim reveals:

  • Why she had surgery booked twice and didn't go through with it... Turns out, the third time was a charm!

Ep 56: How her prolapse story led to pelvic health awareness and activism w/ Filippa Odevall

Ep 56: How her prolapse story led to pelvic health awareness and activism w/ Filippa Odevall

STORIES are how we connect. Sharing our own, personal stories (and listening to stories of others who've "been there") is how we heal. In this fantastic interview with Filippa Odevall, you'll learn about her prolapse journey and the path she has taken toward natural healing, and how it empowered her to — ultimately — help women all over the world.

Filippa Odevall is the Co-Founder of Women Cycles — now MoonRise — a brand new course platform for women's challenges from before puberty to after menopause. Her favorite quote is, "There is nothing stronger than a broken woman who has rebuilt herself".

You will learn:

  1. Filippa's biggest challenge when she experienced symptomatic prolapse after childbirth
  2. Why options from the health care system can feel so limiting
  3. What she thinks is the *most* important factors to be able to heal
  4. Why healing is not linear (and how to deal with that, emotionally)
  5. How Byron Katie's "The Work" helped with the emotional component of prolapse
  6. What it's been like to start a new business with her husband
  7. Why Women Cycles is "like the Netflix for pelvic health"

Ep 55: Gait Changes After Episiotomy and C-Section w/ Dan Baines

Ep 55: Gait Changes After Episiotomy and C-Section w/ Dan Baines

Truth: the WHOLE BODY is connected, and scar tissue you developed years ago may impact your movement today! In this episode with UK-based osteopath Daniel Baines, you'll learn about movement patterns that can unconsciously occur after injury, trauma, or scarring. Dan sees people falling into two patterns: opening and moving away from the injury/scar site, vs closing and moving toward the injury/scar site (more of a protective mechanism). We discuss how this patterning remains in your nervous system even after the injury/scar has healed. Dan shares a SIMPLE home treatment (that you can try too) of treating the nerve receptors via gentle, reassuring touch... you might find that your movement changes completely when you place your hand on the scar tissue site.

We also discuss reintroducing safety into the system through hypnotherapy, what it means to move "somatically," the importance of slowing down movement to really FEEL (and heal), and SO MUCH MORE!

Ep 51: Loving your Meridians for Prolapse and Bladder Health w/ Dr. Jannine Krause

Ep 51: Loving your Meridians for Prolapse and Bladder Health w/ Dr. Jannine Krause

As stress and pressure in my work life has increased, guess what... some of my pelvic health symptoms have worsened! Specifically, urinary urgency and frequency, as well as feelings of heaviness in my pelvis. Yep! I'm outing myself. Pelvic health is for LIFE, and it's a constant work in progress... even for the experts.

As a pelvic health expert in need of a little EXTRA pelvic floor self-help, I turned to my good friend Dr. Jannine Krause to discuss the meridian system as a pelvic healing modality.

In this episode you'll learn about the bladder, kidney, and spleen meridians and how these "energetic highways" can help -- or hinder -- our pelvic health. Jannine shares specific tips about how to eat for the health of these meridians and how to care for them: what time of the day they need to be supported most, and a specific position to heal and replenish them.

Ep 39: The Forgiveness Wound... And what a miraculous self-healing actually sounds like!

*This is my personal story, and is not to be used as a substitute for medical treatment or advice.

Just like episode 34, here's another super personal installment! In this episode, I discuss the power of forgiveness and releasing deeply held fears and resentments. Healing "the forgiveness wound" (i.e. all of the open, gaping areas of my life for which self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others would be a balm) has been a big step on my personal self-healing journey!

If this conversation interests you, then Transcend, my next level of coaching, is for you. Transcend is ideal for women who have been through Lift (or a similar pelvic floor/core restoration program) and know that there's MORE to healing than exercise and lifestyle alone. If you're interested in going deeper and learning how to become your own inner healer, join the waiting list for the current (or next) round of this deeply supportive experience: https://www.vibrantpelvichealth.com/transcend

Ep 38: Toys and Products to Use During and After Recovery from Pelvic Pain

Are you getting enough "Vitamin P?" (Pleasure!) Whether or not you're dealing with pelvic pain, pleasure is an essential component of healing and it helps us ALL live our best lives. When we feel good, we do good!

In this super-informative interview with Nicole Guappone, you'll learn why sex doesn't have to involve intercourse or orgasm, products and toys that can help relieve pelvic pain, the difference between dilators and dildos, how to approach a sex toy shop, what to look for in a lube, how to use products for trigger point release, and so much more.

We keep the conversation real, but we also keep it clean and respectful. Regardless, you might want to listen with headphones if you're in a public setting.
