Shannon is a recipient of the Playwrights’ Center Jerome Fellowship in 2020/2021 and he was a Lambda Literary Fellow for 2019 (in playwriting) and 2022 (in screenwriting) and a Finnovation Fellow for 2019/2020. He is a sought after speaker on transgender issues and religion as well as a skilled facilitator of a variety of workshops. His work with Brian G. Murphy at QueerTheology.com has reached more than a million people all over the world through videos, articles, and online courses and community. Shannon’s plays include The Body's Rapture, Body+Blood, in a stand of dying trees, Line of Sight, Twisted Deaths, The Resistance of My Skin, and Who Has Eyes To See. He's also the writer of three television pilots: Transformed, Freedom, Kansas, and Family Unit.

57. Exchanging Retributive Punishment for Transformative Justice with Rahim Buford (S4 E8)
In this episode, I talked with Rahim Buford. Rahim was paroled in 2015 after 26 consecutive years of confinement. A native Nashvillian, Rahim has seen and felt how poverty negatively impacts people in the criminal legal system. Arrested at age 18, he lived more than half of his life within seven different prisons across Tennessee. During that time, he completed course work for Lipscomb University, Ohio University, and Vanderbilt Divinity School. Rahim was a co-founder of Salt (Schools for Alternative Learning and Transformation), an inclusive undergraduate program that provides a safe learning space for non-traditional students at Riverbend Prison. While incarcerated, he also self-published his own book, Save Your Own Life. Upon his release from prison, Rahim received a Presidential Scholarship to American Baptist College, and worked part time as an organizer for Children’s Defense Fund Nashville. In 2017, he founded Unheard Voices Outreach to assist currently and formerly incarcerated navigate reentry. Rahim graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurial Leadership in 2019. He managed the Nashville Community Bail Fund from 2018 to 2021. Rahim uses his voice to advocate for decarceration and transformative justice.

In this episode, I talked with hip hop artist and poet Sequana Murray, or Bandy as she is known by her stage name. Sequana wrote "Love Is," the theme song for season 3, so we discussed the lyrics and her writing process. In the second half of our conversation, Sequana shared about her journey with depression and toward whole human health. Sequana was also a guest on the first full episode in season 1, "Intersection of Multiple Identities," and she was a guest in season 2. Her episode is titled "The Necessity of Reparations."

36. Poetic Healing from Epigenetic Trauma with Xat Gómez (S2 E16)
In this episode, I talked with Xat Gómez. Xat works in community and new media integration. Established by an upbringing of communal power and epigenetic trauma, their work is focused on poetic healing. A Gilman Scholar, they conducted undergraduate research in Santiago de Chile, Rapa Nui, and Patagonia. They seek to visually facilitate pragmatic systems of access and dissemination. Graduating with a BFA and a Minor in Women and Gender studies from USF, they served in ArtistYear, an Americorp program in Philadelphia while learning full stack development at the UPenn’s Pennovation Center. They are a part of the Colombian diaspora and currently reside in Borinquén.
