Brokenhearted

By Althea Branton

Consider this - if you've been oppressed, repressed and suppressed your entire life, how does that affect your interpersonal relationships? How have centuries of colonialism, imperialism and systemic racism affect the way you experience heartbreak?

I'm Althea Branton and I'm not afraid to stare centuries of patriarchal nonsense in the face and reclaim the entirety of my hella delicious Self.

Season 2 of Brokenhearted features countercultural conversations about heartbreak in all its forms. Start by reclaiming your whole Self and see what happens next.

Why I'm No Longer Brokenhearted (Series Finale)

Why I'm No Longer Brokenhearted (Series Finale)

A year and a half ago, I had a thought to start a podcast about heartbreak.  Days later, that thought became an actual reality... minus all the law of attraction/high vibe/manifesting bullshit.

In this final episode of Brokenhearted, I reflect on what heartbreak really means, how I'll navigate heartbreak moving on and the #1 reason why I decided to call time on this podcast.

I'm so grateful to every person I had a conversation with in producing Brokenhearted.  I'm even more grateful to the legion of you who tuned in every week to face your own heartbreak.

I may be back with something to say.  Till then, reclaim yourself, feel your feelings, wash your hands and wear a bloody mask.

Oh yeah - don't be racist.  Don't be a racist.  Don't like being called racist?  Then don't be racist.

Why I Started a Podcast

Why I Started a Podcast

I get asked often why I started a podcast... specifically a podcast about heartbreak.   Why would I want to talk about something so seemingly painful?

Heartbreak is pain.  It's grief.  It's loss.  It's the shadow side that no one wants to face head-on let alone talk about.  I'm not afraid to stare demons in the face... in fact, I'll invite them over for a physically-distant BBQ and serve them some freshly-squeezed lemonade.

In this bonus episode, I share the 2 main reasons why I launched Brokenhearted.

Pride Means Life

Pride Means Life

As a cisgender bisexual demisexual woman of colour, Pride means a lot to me.
Pride Month is a time I'll never forget as the time where I arrived at the semicolon of life. It's a story that only a few people on this Earth knew... until now.
If you've been affected by my story, please reach out to a suicide prevention resource in your local community. I paused... then I continued. You can do it too.

Same Storm, Different Boat

Same Storm, Different Boat

We are not having the same experience.  While I can't fathom how people can be murdered in cold blood in broad daylight and only face repercussions due to excessive public outcry, the fact remains that murderers are only being brought to justice for fear of public condemnation.

As a cishet woman of colour, I've had my fair share of discrimination.  But I'm not going to let those ignorant words and actions derail me from what I was put here to do.

In this episode, I break down what each of us can do to address our systemic biases.  We ALL have them.   Doing the work will effect change one individual at a time.

Share this episode with everyone you know.  Have a conversation about it.  Take up space and speak your mind.

Dr. Simone Kotraba did exactly what her parents wanted her to do - get an education.  So she did.  Fast-forward several years and a doctorate later, it's still causing conflict.

Dr. Kotraba and I break down what it's like to grow up in the West Indian community.   She shares her experiences of adjusting to life in Brooklyn from Jamaica and how she had to unpack the belief systems, lack/poverty mindsets and identity issues so that she could raise her child differently.

A Journey Through Heartbreak with Simran Bhatia

A Journey Through Heartbreak with Simran Bhatia

Simran Bhatia is the founder of Flowation.com, where spiritual-minded entrepreneurs can find resources to learn how to create more Flow in their lives and businesses.

She’s been obsessed with the question ‘how can I make this feel easier?’ since she can remember. As a former Estate Planning and Succession Planning attorney for small businesses, she learned firsthand what makes small business owners function at their best. She’s taken that knowledge forward as a small business strategy coach for spiritual-minded small business owners and helps them bust through their limiting beliefs and upper limits to create systems in their lives and businesses to help support their more aligned self. These systems help them become more efficient with their time and priorities; and helps them feel lit up as they work with greater purpose and allow more Flow in their lives.

Simran specializes especially in helping parents with children under the age of 5, who want the space in their life to practice Conscious Parenting, but are struggling to fit everything they want to do with their business and children into their schedule.

In her time away from work, Simran spends her time dancing or attempting to do yoga, while her two spirited kids are normally climbing on her. And she loves taking hot baths and engaging in self-care while listening to binaural beats music, while her wonderful hubby takes the kids out for an ‘adventure day.’

In this episode, Simran shares her first heartbreak experience led her to discover more about her faith, spirituality and ultimately herself.
