Low Hanging Fruit, Ep. 15: Brenden and Charlie dive in on the player development problems of the Cardinals in recent years

Brenden Schaeffer and Charlie Marlow present Ep. 15 of Low Hanging Fruit.

The boys spend a lot of time discussing the woes of the offense, whether the Cardinals get the most out of their players' talent level--which opens up a larger conversation about the decline of the player development strategies and success level of the organization in recent years.

Ep. 553: The Cardinals Are Allergic To Scoring Runs Right Now

Ep. 553: The Cardinals Are Allergic To Scoring Runs Right Now

In Ep. 553 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 4-1 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

The Cardinals have to figure this thing out offensively. Something's got to give, as the team has now scored three or fewer runs in 19 of their 31 games.

It's the complete opposite trend of the type of team they needed to be at the plate in order to accommodate a starting rotation that was designed to log innings while admittedly giving up a few runs per game.

St. Louis ranks in the bottom five of every relevant offensive category. What gives? Is it on the players? The coaches? Some combination of the two? What can bring this group of hitters, which seems capable on paper, out of the shadows and into a more robust and productive lineup?

Ep. 552: Cardinals Doubleheader Breakdown: Gibby Vs. Flaherty + Major Questions About Matz, Gallegos & Crawford

Ep. 552: Cardinals Doubleheader Breakdown: Gibby Vs. Flaherty + Major Questions About Matz, Gallegos & Crawford

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals doubleheader split against the Tigers in Detroit on April 30, 2024.

Game 1 featured a great pitchers' duel between former Cardinal Jack Flaherty and Kyle Gibson, who traversed seven innings to continue his streak of innings hoarding. His ERA is now below 4.00 as Gibby has been just what the doctor ordered for this rotation.

Flaherty, of course, shoved the Cardinals into oblivion while setting a new career high in strikeouts. Fortunately, though, the Redbirds handled another former Cardinal pitcher in order to steal Game 1 away from the Tigers late.

Game 2, though, didn't go the Cardinals' way. We talk major questions about Steven Matz, Giovanny Gallegos and Brandon Crawford after that unfortunate outing for St. Louis.

Ep. 551: Wait, What? Cardinals Reportedly Planning To Ask For $500-600 MILLION In Public Funds For Busch Stadium Upgrades

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the recent Riverfront Times article that reported that the Cardinals plan to request public funding in the neighborhood of $500 to $600 million for renovations to Busch Stadium.

What exactly are the renovations needed? What is the timeline for this potential project? And comparing it to recent examples across sports, how do we expect the public to react to this request if it ever comes time to vote on it?

Although this report is merely the signal of a very preliminary stage of the process, it does seem that the Cardinals could come knocking on the door of the public in the next two to five years asking for funding to upgrade this 18-year-old stadium.

Ep. 550: Cardinals once again can't complete a sweep — And the bats are to blame

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 4-2 loss to the Mets on Sunday night in a YouTube live stream. This is the audio recreation of that stream.

The bullpen came in depleted after the 7-8-9 guys handled Games 1 and 2. But it turned out others were capable of stepping into the void... Until they weren't.'

Why couldn't the offense lift a finger in this one to spare Matt Liberatore from becoming a walk-off victim?

BONUS VIDEO: The One Key Stat That Led To A Cardinals Loss Sunday In New York

Brenden Schaeffer hops on to discuss the Cardinals 4-2 loss to the Mets in 11 innings on Sunday, April 28, 2024.

In a preview of the topics that will be discussed on B-Schaeff Daily later Sunday night, we get into several topics including the performance of the bullpen Sunday -- which was actually exceptional despite the way the game ended -- as well as the REAL reason the Cardinals lost this game.

Heck, it had more to do with something that happened Saturday than anything to do with the relievers who threw today. But more than anything, there was one key stat from Sunday's game that painted the picture.

Ep. 549: The Back End Of The Cardinals Bullpen Is Just Preposterous Right Now

Ep. 549: The Back End Of The Cardinals Bullpen Is Just Preposterous Right Now

In Ep. 549 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 7-4 win over the Mets from Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Sonny Gray was stupendous once again, striking out nine hitters and allowing only one earned run over six innings. But he also issued a few walks, one of which becoming costly as it followed an uncharacteristic Nolan Arenado error.

The four-run inning that followed the error only saw one earned run charged to Gray, but it led to a tighter score that meant Oli Marmol had to turn once again to his 7-8-9 guys out of the bullpen.

Those guys have been absolutely insane, with the ERAs posted on the thumbnail to prove it. But overworking an elite bullpen can still lead to danger later in the year, so the Cardinals have to weigh these factors despite Saturday being a very positive win overall.

The offense kicked things off the right way for a change, but it was another save situation for Ryan Helsley. Can Lance Lynn be efficient Sunday knowing the club will need him to be due to a worn out back end of the bullpen?

Ep. 548: Crazy Ryan Helsley Stat Stays Alive In Cardinals' Win Over Mets On Friday

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 4-2 win over the Mets on Friday night at Citi Field.

Ryan Helsley and the rest of the bullpen was nails again -- and the Cardinals have still needed Hels for each and every one of their wins on the season.

Miles Mikolas gave the Cardinals a bit more than he had been providing while the offense got its start early thanks to homers by Burleson and Contreras.

Why does it feel like the Cardinals are just hanging on for dear life in so many of their wins? Hey, at least it's working as often as it is.

We explain the deal with Brandon Crawford's playing time and talk about one Cardinal pitching prospect who is absolutely lighting it up at one of the lower levels of the org.

Could This Version Of A Cardinals Rebuild In 2025 Make Sense — And Actually Be Kinda Fun?

Could This Version Of A Cardinals Rebuild In 2025 Make Sense — And Actually Be Kinda Fun?

Brenden Schaeffer and Josh Jacobs (Dealin' The Cards podcast) sit down to discuss a really interesting hypothetical.

Could the Cardinals institute a mini-rebuild—perhaps more accurately, a retool—of not only the MLB roster but possibly the entire structure of the organization if 2024 doesn't live up to the hopes of ultimately fielding a contender in St. Louis? And if so, what exactly might that process look like?

The boys were surprised to see how much fun the hypothetical pared-down version of the 2025 St. Louis Cardinals could actually be on paper, even after factoring in significant departures from the current team. With a reduced payroll, could a small step back be exactly the step forward the Cardinals need in the long run if they aren't able to right the ship this season?

We discuss just about every relevant name searching for guys who could make sense for a thought experiment in which John Mozeliak steps out of the limelight. Could Chaim Bloom be prominently featured? The boys discuss various reasons why that could conceivably be the case.

Ep. 546: Cardinals Win! Willson Contreras Sparks Rally To Sink Monty and The Snakes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Willson Contreras beat his former (occasional) batterymate Jordan Montgomery for a double in the sixth to help spark the Cardinals' scoring against Arizona. That's a moment that the Cardinal catcher probably enjoyed quiiiite a bit.

Kyle Gibson was sturdy as nails for the Redbirds in six strong innings after he navigated a scary start to the day in the first.

And what was the deal with Marmol taking Herrera out for defense late in the game? We dive into that decision and plenty else in Ep. 546 of B-Schaeff Daily!

Ep. 545: If that was "one of his better outings," expectations for Steven Matz are way too low

Ep. 545: If that was "one of his better outings," expectations for Steven Matz are way too low

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 14-1 loss to the D-backs on Tuesday, April 24, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Oli Marmol shared his belief that Steven Matz actually had one of his better outings on Tuesday, which just isn't something that makes sense to say for the manager in that postgame even if he believed it.

Zack Thompson got shelled in relief and the offense went dormant again against a pitcher that they ought to have dominated. It's bad, all around.

Do the Cardinals have the urgency to turn this around or are we looking at a 2023 redux? Because the momentum from Monday's walk-off is officially squandered after the nightmare of Tuesday's game.

Ep. 543: Cardinals Waste Sonny Gray's Brilliance As They're Swept By Brewers

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 2-0 loss to the Brewers in a live stream on YouTube, Sunday, April 22, 2024. This is the audio from that stream.

Sonny Gray was masterful for St. Louis, posting 12 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. One ill-timed hit in the seventh made him the loser in the game as the Cardinals went 0-for-9 with RISP while leaving all 10 men that they put on base still stranded on those bases to end the inning.

What do the Cardinals do about an offense that is costing them the season to this point -- but is supposed to be so much better than it's been?

Ep. 542: Mikolas wastes rare run support from Cardinals lineup by coughing up three bombs to Brewers

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 12-5 loss to the Brewers on Saturday at Busch Stadium (4/20/24) as Miles Mikolas had another start in which he was unable to get through five innings.

Mikolas allowed three home runs to the Milwaukee lineup, wasting a rare example of quality run support provided by the Cardinal offense. The bullpen was rough, too, as the Cardinals dropped the second straight game to a division rival that too many folks might have been overlooking before the year began...

Ep. 541: Goldschmidt and Gorman Go 0-for-10 with 5 Ks as Cardinals bats cost team another game

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 2-1 loss to the Brewers in 10 innings from Friday, April 19, 2024.

The lineup is still struggling tremendously and it wasted a strong outing from Gibby in the process. Nolan Gorman picked up the golden sombrero with 4 Ks in an 0-for-5 effort. He stranded seven on base, including four runners with RISP and two outs.

Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-5, too, including a groundout with the bases loaded to end the ninth inning. His OPS is below .500 and there could be repercussions to other parts of the roster as Oli Marmol may have to consider accommodating for the massive woes of several star players.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 3-2 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night, April 16, 2024.

Following up Sonny Gray's electric outing from Monday, Lance Lynn guided the Cardinals through seven strong innings before the bullpen slammed the door.

Ryan Helsley has pitched in every win so far this year for STL! It's a good thing, too, that St. Louis got the effort that it did from its pitchers -- because, yeah, the offense is still looking a little sluggish. How worrying is Paul Goldschmidt's slow start? Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 3-1 win over the Athletics on Monday, April 15, 2024. This audio comes from a YouTube Live stream that took place postgame Monday night. On another pitch limit, Sonny Gray worked with what he had to twirl six more scoreless innings, bringing his total for the season to 11.0 shutout frames. Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 5-0 loss to the D-backs from Sunday, April 14, 2024.

Masyn Winn was out of the lineup for the fourth time in 16 games with Brandon Crawford playing shortstop instead as Oli Marmol and the Cardinals continue to manage Winn's workload in the early going.

But fans are wondering why a 22-year-old shortstop necessarily needs so much careful management of his workload. Brenden attempts to present some possible reasons for that in an episode that extends for nearly an hour so as to responsibly cover all the angles.

We also discuss the day for Mikolas and the relievers as well as the general malaise for this offense -- the simply Cardinals won't thrive without waaay more production from the lineup.

Ep. 535: Kyle Gibson was stunned that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. launched a well-located sinker for a game-altering swing

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday night, April 13, 2024.

Kyle Gibson gave up a costly three-run home run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and after the game he conceded that he should have let Willson Contreras call the slider that he was angling for before PitchCom issues caused some problems for the St. Louis battery ahead of the fateful pitch to Gurriel.

Even in giving credit to his catcher for a well-called game, though, Gibson said you'd have to ask Gurriel what he was looking for to be able to turn on the sinker in off the plate and change the game with one swing. Was Gurriel simply lasered in on the pitch for whatever reason?

Regardless, we also dive into some base running issues and the continued hot and cold nature of clutch hitting for the Cardinals in the early portion of the year.

St. Louis erupted for six runs thanks to home runs from Nolan Arenado (finally!) and Lars Nootbaar (sheesh, took him long enough) to race out to a big lead. But Matz and Gallegos struggled in the fifth inning to allow for the game to begin anew.

But how about the lineup battling back with Donovan and Goldschmidt before the youngsters brought it home with an impressive insurance-filled rally. And WOW the back end of that bullpen is cooking with gas.

Ep. 532: Nootbaar Reportedly Returns Friday — And Victor Scott Is Staying Right Where He Is Despite Wednesday's Struggles

Ep. 532: Nootbaar Reportedly Returns Friday — And Victor Scott Is Staying Right Where He Is Despite Wednesday's Struggles

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 4-3 loss to the Phillies on Wednesday as rookie outfielder Victor Scott II had an unfortunate afternoon in the field and on the bases to contribute to the Redbirds dropping the series finale.

But Brenden comes out in favor of the reported decision by the Cardinals not to overreact to that specific game with a move to demote Scott to Memphis upon the return of Lars Nootbaar, which will reportedly take place Friday in the Cardinals' next game.

Katie Woo reported Wednesday night that Noot will be activated for Friday with Pedro Pages as the corresponding player optioned back to the minors. So why is now *not* necessarily the right time to send Scott down despite his struggles Wednesday?

Perhaps the Cardinals wanted to send a message to the young player that they've got his back. That angle and plenty more discussion on the situation in this episode.

Ep. 531: In Highly Anticipated Cardinals Debut, Sonny Gray Looks Like The Ace Who Was Promised

Ep. 531: In Highly Anticipated Cardinals Debut, Sonny Gray Looks Like The Ace Who Was Promised

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 3-0 win over the Phillies from Tuesday night, April 9, 2024. On a pitch count of 65, Sonny Gray went out and shut down the Philadelphia lineup for five scorless innings in his first appearance for the Cardinals.

The bullpen was asked to carry more of the load than usual due to Gray's truncated availability, and the unit came through with a massive performance highlighted by JoJo Romero's gumption.

Offensively, the Cardinals got just enough thanks to a power surge by Nolan Gorman and some situational baseball by Victor Scott II and Brendan Donovan.

Ep. 530: The Cardinals NEED Their Best Players To Be Their Best Players -- Goldy, Gorman, Arenado Struggle Monday vs. Phils

Ep. 530: The Cardinals NEED Their Best Players To Be Their Best Players -- Goldy, Gorman, Arenado Struggle Monday vs. Phils

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 5-3 loss to the Phillies in extra innings on Monday, April 8, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals just didn't get much production from their lineup backing Miles Mikolas' strong start in this one. The problems are particularly noticeable as it pertains to 2-3-4 in the lineup with Goldschmidt, Gorman and Arenado combining to for 2-for-15 with 7 strikeouts. With runners at the corners in the 10th, the Nolans whiffed back-to-back to end the game.

If the Cardinals don't have their best hitters playing like their best hitters, what's the upside for this team to contend? And is it too early to be worried about guys who have historically been studs their whole careers or could there be something to these early woes? Plus, we talk more Victor Scott II, more Masyn Winn and Ivan Herrera.

Ep. 529: Sunday Was A Failed Start For Gibby — But Did He Also Still Do His Job?

Ep. 529: Sunday Was A Failed Start For Gibby — But Did He Also Still Do His Job?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 10-3 loss to the Marlins from Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2024, at Busch Stadium.

Kyle Gibson failed the team by giving up six runs in the first inning and effectively taking them out of the game before it ever really began. But did he also, in a way, do the exact job that the Cardinals signed him to do on those inevitable days where you don't have your best stuff as a pitcher?

Gibby still got the team through six innings and saved the bullpen in a major way in the process. Do we give him some credit for fulfilling that notable role?

Ep. 528: Do The Cardinals Deserve Some Credit For Cautious Handling Of Steven Matz? Because It's Paying Off!

Ep. 528: Do The Cardinals Deserve Some Credit For Cautious Handling Of Steven Matz? Because It's Paying Off!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 3-1 win over the Marlins on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Steven Matz dialed up another strong outing as he tossed five zeros on the scoreboard, lowering his ERA to 1.74 for the young season.

The Cardinals had a very intentional, deliberate approach to Matz's spring, bringing him along on a slower pace than the rest of the team's starters.

While it might be nice eventually to see Matz get deeper into games, it's hard to argue with the production St. Louis is getting from him so far--especially when you consider that he's healthy in a world where prominent pitchers like Spencer Strider, Shane Bieber, Gerrit Cole and Devin Williams have already gone down to injury in 2024.

Ep. 527: HIT PARADE! Cardinals Break Out The Lumber At Perfect Time To Cruise To Victory In The Home Opener

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 8-5 win over the Marlins in the home opener on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Ivan Herrera launched his first MLB home run. Lance Lynn gave the Cardinals a solid start but saw the wheels begin to fall off as he was removed from the outing after allowing a couple of fifth-inning homers.

From there, the Cardinals found a way to put together a rally and got sturdy efforts from their relievers to hold together a victory in front of the Busch Stadium crowd on a chilly Thursday in April.

We break down the big moments from the game while diving into the numerous injury updates from Thursday, including info on Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras and more.

Ep. 526: Key Moments From Zack Thompson, Brandon Crawford And Nolan Arenado Stand Out As Cardinals Come Up Short Of A Sweep In San Diego

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 3-2 loss to the Padres on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 as Zack Thompson had an up-and-down start that included more free passes and fewer miles per hour than folks were hoping to see from the St. Louis starter.

Nolan Arenado came up empty in a big late spot as the Cardinal offense failed to make the Padres pay for several walks and hit-by-pitches.

Plus, a very unnerving defensive play from Brandon Crawford was ultimately equivalent to the difference in the ball game.

Ep. 525: Cardinals Secure First Series Win As Mikolas, Contreras Headline Total Team Effort

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 5-2 win over the Padres from Tuesday night, April 2, 2024. Miles Mikolas logged a quality start and Willson Contreras hit his second homer of the year.

Plenty of interesting moments to discuss from this game and the commenters had plenty to say about the nature of small ball and the steady start for the rotation. Some concerns, too, about slow starts for Arenado and others. We discussed it all!

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 6-2 win over the Padres from Monday, April 1, 2024.

No foolin', Kyle Gibson was the Cardinals' best pitcher through the first turn of the starting rotation.

We talk about Gibby's strong outing as well as the bats coming to life as the Redbirds coasted to a solid series-opening win against Mike Shildt and the Padres.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 5-4 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday Night Baseball as John King surrendered the crushing blow of a home run off the bat of Max Muncy to give LAD a lead that they would not relinquish.

What did you think of the bullpen management by Oli Marmol? We'll dive into how there was arguably more going on in the John King decision than quick hot takes would lead you to believe. Let's get into it.

Ep. 522: Lance Lynn's Aura, A Bizarre Rally And A Nail-Biting 10th Earn Cardinals Their First Win Of 2024

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' first win of the 2024 season as St. Louis took down the Dodgers 6-5 in 10 innings on Saturday.

Lance Lynn put the vibes right where they needed to be after a rocky start to his outing. Old friend Joe Kelly activated as a sleeper agent for the local nine in a truly bizarre seventh-inning rally for the Cardinals.

Then Mookie and the Dodgers forced extra innings where the Cardinals somehow survived. We break it all down!

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down his thoughts on the Cardinals' 6-3 loss to the Dodgers on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Zack Thompson was good except for when he wasn't, the lineup rolled out the red carpet for Bobby Miller and struck out 14 times in the game. Maybe Lance Lynn can right the ship Saturday? Let's talk through it all.

Ep. 520: Cause For Concern Already After Cardinals Botch Opening Day?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' opening day loss to the Dodgers in Los Angeles as Mookie, Shohei and Co. got the 7-1 victory on Thursday.

Was the result more concerning for the St. Louis pitching or its offense? Or is the answer neither, and that it's too early to be genuinely concerned about anything?

Ep. 518: Cardinals officially name Victor Scott II starting CF on opening day

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the news that Victor Scott II will be the Cardinals' Opening Day center fielder as the shoulder injury for Dylan Carlson.

It was a rough collision for Carlson with right fielder Jordan Walker earlier this week, leading to an unfortunate circumstance of an IL stint for DC3. But it's also how Scott manages to land his latest opportunity.

We discuss whether Scott is ready for this chance and how his presence could help the Cardinals' pitching staff get off on the right foot to begin 2024.

Ep. 517: For the price, why didn't the Cardinals try to sign Blake Snell?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses whether the Cardinals should have tried to sign reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell considering the price and short-term contract he signed with the Giants.

Are the Cardinals falling victim to sunk cost fallacy with the way they constructed their rotation? And how has the inability to develop a cost-controlled starter hamstrung the team in recent years?
