Build-A-Bond
By Fraser and Stuart
Each week a special guest builds their perfect James Bond film by picking who plays Bond, who plays the co-star, who plays the villain, who directs the films and who performs the theme song.

Bill Mohin in The Child Who Loved Me
For the last episode of the series we are joined by legendary TV director Bill Mohin. The whole episode has a bit of a ‘last day of school’ chaotic energy and Bill’s film matches that vibe perfectly.
Due to overwhelming public demand, we also have the return of Taggy Checks for this episode, keeping everyone’s facts as accurate as possible.
As well as all that, we also find time to discuss shirred eggs, tipping point and Bill’s own family connection to Bond.

Maggie Smith (feat. Alex) in Renaissance to Kill
This week we are joined by Instagram’s very own Maggie Smith (no, not that one). This Maggie is a model, content creator and star of the hit BBC Scotland show The Agency: Unfiltered. Maggie is very much online, so has brought along her legacy media savvy nephew Alex (and his jotter) to help build their dream James Bond adventure.
Alongside the usual discussion of actors, directors, and music we also find out why Maggie fancies Mr Burns, what she thinks is the least deserving charity and discover who invented yellow tennis balls…

Jacob Stolworthy in Quantum of Surrey
It’s BAFTAs week! To celebrate we are joined by top industry insider, Jacob Stolworthy. By day, Jacob is the Chief Culture Reporter at the Independent and by night he hosts the Lost Boys Podcast. He loves all things film, demonstrating his passion by picking a Bond movie laden with the best and brightest of Hollywood’s current talent.
Inevitably we talk quite a lot about Lost, but also find time to discuss modern films lengths, Robot Wars and try to avoid angering any Italian style crime syndicates…

Kirsteen Harvey in For Your Ice Only
Hope you are still feeling festive because this week is our unofficial Christmas special! To help us deck the halls we are joined by Glasgow based singer/songwriter Kirsteen Harvey. Kirsteen is firmly on the nice list this year, but admits to not being much of a Bond fan and describes the film she builds on this week’s episode as “terrible”.
Despite that, we have plenty of festive fun talking about her recent EP, her hit Christmas cover song and constructing a supergroup of Scotland’s best musical artists. We also discuss the Shrek’s swamp Airbnb and give our definitive verdict on the Barbie film…
Please note: this episode is complete free of any Christmas Jones references.

Evelyn Hollow in Livingston Let Die
Feel the chill this week as we are joined by queen of the uncanny, Evelyn Hollow. In our first episode ever recorded from the other side, Evelyn takes a bit of a break from life as a paranormal psychologist to build a Bond film that is firmly grounded in the realm of the living.
Best known for her work on Spooked Scotland and the hit podcast Uncanny, Evelyn shows a slightly different side of herself - exploring her love of film, tv and music. We also discuss big dick energy, why we hate Americans and then mostly just do Roger Allam impressions for the rest of the episode…

Duncan Pow in You Only Live Infinite Times
Breaking News: Disney star in shocking Elon Musk forehead tirade… is what we would title this episode if we were a clickbait hungry news organisation. However, that doesn’t do justice to the contemplative and absorbing conversation we had with Rogue One and Andor star Duncan Pow. While talking us through the ups and occasional downs of his career to date, Duncan shares hilarious and heartwarming tales about working in the industry – as well as some of the wisdom he has learned along the way.
Duncan may have postponed his quest for the meaning of life to return to acting, but he certainly layered his Bond film with plenty of powerful and deeply meaningful themes. We also discuss Dream Team Spanish mischief and what the devil would do to Boris Johnson...

Amanda Lamb in Lamb with the Golden Gun
‘God, this gin is strong…’ remarks television presenter, property expert and former model Amanda Lamb mid-way through this episode. At another point she describes herself as a ‘box full of kittens’. Both of these quotes should give you an accurate impression of what is an excitable, chaotic and absolutely hilarious episode of Build-A-Bond. Amanda is the perfect guest, meandering from opinion to anecdote to innuendo and back again.
In the small gaps between the near constant double entendre and random tangents, Amanda somehow finds time to actual make some picks for her film, although not all are well received by the BaB boys... We also discuss potting shed sex tips, cinema chamber pots and why Amanda used to go to bed with a wet ear.

David Lowbridge-Ellis in Queersino Royale
This week we are joined by one of the most interesting and thoughtful voices in Bond fandom, License to Queer’s David Lowbridge-Ellis MBE. David has made a name for himself exploring why James Bond appeals so much to LGBTQIA+ people and reappraising the Bond universe through queer lenses. Forhis Build-A-Bond, David makes things as difficult as possible for himself by enforcing multiple rules on his film, all of which lead to a Bond film unlike any other we’ve had on the show before.
Part 007 love-in, part queer deconstruction and part cinematic history, this weeks episode is what a podcast was always meant to be: a group of nerds nerding out about their favourite nerdy subject. We also offend the French and discuss some of Fraser’s favourite obstacle spanning structures.
Additional special guests include David’s cats and Fraser’s washing machine.

Catriona Shearer in No Time to Pie
Stuart is absolutely delighted to have the star of his favourite ever TV show on the podcast this week, Catriona Shearer from the news! Best known for her time on Reporting Scotland’s breakfast bulletins, Catriona discards her serious newsreader persona to take part in one of our funniest episodes to date.
Build-A-Bond becomes ‘Blend-A-Bond’ as Catriona plays fast and loose with the format and creates a film as chaotic as that one time she read out the wrong day's news. We also discuss miscommunication at a Turkish barbers and banana etiquette in the newsroom.
Important note: this episode was recorded prior to the 2023 revelations about the personal conduct of Huw Edwards.

Sanjeev Kohli in Thunderfinger
Coming home from a bracing walk with your family, crashing on the sofa and settling down to watch a Bond film. That’s what Boxing Day has always been about, and this year its no different… Build-A-Bond is back!
Season 5 starts off with a return to Craiglang, and a hilarious chat with the man behind one of its most popular residents. As well as playing iconic shopkeeper Navid in Still Game, Sanjeev Kohli is an actor, comedian, writer and borderline national treasure. We take the opportunity to chat to him about collapsed arse syndrome, his family’s bowel movements and some other things not related to defecation…

We bring season four to an end with an absolute blast of an episode with broadcaster and presenter Sean McDonald. As Scotland’s third most popular podcast host, Sean is a natural storyteller and isn’t afraid to tackle some of society’s big issues – all laced with typical Scottish humour.
Like all of the best Bond adventures, this week's episode swings from the serious, to the hilarious and occasionally into the surreal. We discuss poverty porn, Scotland’s most underrated handsome guys and we even turn our hand to cutting political satire.

Kim Sherwood in S.P.E.C.T.R.E
Building Bonds is all in a day's work for Kim Sherwood, the acclaimed novelist tasked by the Fleming Estate with writing a new trilogy of James Bond novels for the next generation.
Kim describes James Bond as one of the enduring loves of her life and being given the chance to write 007 spy novels was the fulfilment of a childhood dream for her. But will she be as successful developing a big screen Bond adventure as she has been in becoming the first woman to write a 007 novel?
Kim’s film oozes style and makes the most of the no rules format, drawing on some familiar source material and set at a specific moment in time. It’s Bond, but sort of as we already know him?

Build-A-Bond fans love listening to two grumpy Scottish guys talking nonsense and bickering with each other. With that in mind, we can’t think of a better guest for the show than the BAFTA award winning director Michael Hines – best known for his work on legendary sitcom Still Game.
As well as building his dream James Bond outing, Michael has plenty of anecdotes from his time directing every episode of Still Game, as well as sharing his reflections on the show’s cultural impact in Scotland. That’s plenty.
So stop sitting about the house playing kerplunk and get listening straight away, he who hingeth aboot getteth heehaw!

Liz talks about her challenging rise to the very pinnacle of paralympic success and how life changed for her after winning gold. We also discuss watching Bond in Brazil, 007's Welsh connections and what it really means to be a true hunk.

Statistically speaking, if you turn on a Scottish TV at any given time then you will most likely be watching this week’s guest in action. Gary Lamont cut his teeth on some of Scotland’s most loved shows and now plies his trade alongside some of the biggest names in film and TV.
Gary regales us with tales from his fantastic career, has some heartfelt reflections on River City and teases some very exciting upcoming projects. Amongst all that, we still find time to build his Bond, drawing on his native roots but creating something that feels overall very European.

Bonus Episode – Stuart Morrison in Bond of Brothers
High performance athlete, beloved national treasure and podcast description writer Stuart Morrison is this week’s Build-a-Bond special guest. As the original creator of the format, he’s had plenty of time to think about his picks, but also plenty of time to change his mind...
Its another extra long, extra special bonus episode with plenty of controversy and even a little bit of agreement. There is also some ‘bond building’ of a different variety to help you really get to know your usual BaB co-host.
Unlike Stuart’s film, this episode has plenty of speaking and welcomes back Series 1 icon Jamie McGregor to join Fraser on hosting duties.
Bonus Episode – Fraser McArthur in Dr No No No
Writer, producer, director and occasional podcast host Fraser McArthur is more familiar with life behind the camera, but now has the spotlight shining on him. Will his years of harsh guest criticism come back to haunt him? or will he produce a box office smash?
Its no rules, and he knows it - Fraser takes full liberty with the show’s famously flexible format and indulges in a gluttony of picks from his eclectic taste in films, television and music.
Regular co-host Stuart is joined by fan favourite Taggy Checks to provide the usual grilling in this extra long, extra special bonus episode.
Special announcement!! – all new special episodes coming (very) soon.
You asked for it, and now you’ve got it! They are used to criticising other peoples picks, but now it’s the turn of Fraser and Stuart to sit in the Build-a-Bond hotseat themselves.
For two very special episodes, your usual hosts will be building their own James Bond films. To make things even more interesting, we’ve called in a couple of your favourite previous BaB guests help with the hosting, and to make sure that Fraser and Stuart get a taste of their own criticism…

It’s a sleepy start as the boys wake up at LA time to record, but they soon perk up once they hear some of Andrea’s classic cinema choices…

Award winning director John McPhail is building his dream James Bond film this week. With plenty of experience making films himself, John is the perfect guest to talk us through his picks for Bond, the co-star, the villain, who directs the film and who performs the theme song. As someone who has recently directed a Christmas-zombie-musical-drama-comedy its difficult to guess which direction John will take his film, and there are certainly plenty of surprises as he builds his Bond…
We also hear loads of behind-the-scenes stories from the making of Anna and the Apocalypse, including a brilliant 007 reference within the film that unfortunately didn’t make the final cut.

Ep2 – Jean Johansson in Girls Are Not Enough
This week, A Place in the Sun and Animal Park presenter Jean Johansson builds what some have described as the ‘most woke Bond ever’. Through a series of teasing clues Jean reveals who she would like to play Bond, the co-star, the villain, who directs the film and who performs the theme song. In a total riot of an episode there are plenty of laughs but also a major moment of controversy that threatens to start a serious beef with a beloved national treasure…
We also talk hot celebrity gossip straight from the grapevine and battle with some unfortunate technological issues.
