C4 | Episode 13 - To Coach or Not to Coach

Don't use words like "just" and "might" it gives the trust away and makes you seem uncertain. Especially when you're on sales calls.

If you're a start-up founder, do you really need a coach? Something I've learnt is instead of spending money because you have it, ask yourself do you really need it. Sometimes you have to do things by yourself and achieve something before you spend. (Inspired by this video by Noah Kagan)

If you've genuinely tried for 90 days at your business, and nothing has happened, it's time for you to tweak what you're doing. Whether it's the product, the target market, or your sales calls.

In this episode I look at a range of different sales approaches, including Upwork, LinkedIn outreach,  Hashtags and ads on Facebook.

I also talk about using a CRM and excel spreadsheets to track where the money is in your sales pipeline. The CRM that I use is Hubspot and it completely free.

In todays episode, I talk about Justin Bieber's new song, Lonely, and why I feel like it's a cry for help.

I also cover the feeling of being at a crossroads. I'm approaching the end of university, and feel like the decisions I make in the next 9 months, will impact my whole life journey. I have to choose wisely.

Bad habits have also been building recently including lack of exercise, eating sweets and reading my book. I need to work on this.

We all have high standards, and so today I talk about how I try and deal with my high standards in order to stay productive.

I also have been asking myself this question a lot recently, "is this where I want to be for the rest of my life?"

C4 | Episode 2 - People will call you weird

If people are calling you weird, because you spend all your time in your room or at a friends house, that's probably a good thing. If you're on the pursuit of something massive, you've got to take massive action. Especially if that's in business.

Managing a client was something I didn't think I would need to think about. I thought it would be a matter of just hopping on a call, telling them info and boom. I was wrong about that. You need processes and systems in place to manage clients effective and to give them a good experience as a customer. Some need more help, some need less, but either way, you need to plan a step by step process the customer will go through.

Things you think are really important when starting off a business, are actually the least important. It's easy to focus on website, brand name, logos etc, when actually the main thing to focus on is sales and if the customer wants what you're trying to sell.

If you don't make a decision, the decision is already made. It's the way it works, people won't wait forever. Pick a decision and more on.

C4 | Episode 1 - Things have changed

The podcast is back, and as the title say's things have changed.

I released New Found Media Version 2.0 to the world. My pivoted company. I now help coaches find their voice on LinkedIn through coaching and content creation. For more information please visit my website at: www.newfoundmedia.co

In this episode I talk about what's been happening over the past 4/5 months, both with the company but also with my mentality.

It wouldn't be an episode if I didn't talk about the here and now. So I break down what's been happening recently, and look back at those goals that I set on the previous episode.

What this chapter of the podcast is going to look like was another topic I broke down in this episode, so make sure you check it out and stick around for further episodes coming to you every Sunday 6pm BST.

C3 | Episode 26 - Just the beginning

C3 | Episode 26 - Just the beginning

I asked someone to be my co-founder last week and this week I got a response. Unfortunately it wasn't the right time for them. At the end of it all, I was left feeling happy, content, excited and also a little bit sad. I was sad because it would have been great to be on this journey with another person. I was happy and excited because of the honest that was shared and also because it means I can start building what I want to build, which I was putting off until we had that conversation.

I'm building something new, and I cant wait to share it with you. I will share it on C4 | Episode 1.

I finished 2 books this week. Sell or Be Sold by Grant Cardone and Who Moved My Cheese by Dr Spencer Johnson. I talked about Sell or Be Sold on my LinkedIn, but I did really enjoy both of these books. Who Moved My Cheese shared a question that will stay in my head whenever I come to making decisions. 'What would you do if you weren't afraid?' just have a think about that for a minute in your own life.

I am moving out my room today until mid September and so I have set some goals to achieve by the time I'm back.

  1.  Land at least my first client for the thing I'm building
  2.  Announce what I have been building

I will be back on Chapter 4 of the Building from the Bottom podcast in mid September but until then, if you need me, contact me on my details below, and if not, have a great summer.

C3 | Episode 25 - Negative headspace

C3 | Episode 25 - Negative headspace

Being in a negative headspace doesn't feel good. Usually this can come from either negative self talk, or people being negative around you. How do you get out of it? Stop hiding behind your emotions and take control and responsibility of how you feel. Remember that everyone has good days and bad days, and the good outweighs the bad. Listening to positivity through earphones or outloud can help drown it out. That can be through podcasts, YouTube videos, people like Eric Thomas on Instagram and more.

If you haven't already, it's time to set goals for you to achieve over Coronavirus lockdown. Whether it's to spend more time learning to play the keyboard, or doing more that you love but never get to do, it might be worth setting goals. We don't really know when lockdown will be over but setting goals can help keep you productive over this period, and stop you looking back and realising you didn't do anything.

My life right now?

I had a call with Peter Andersson (CMO of Togee Technologies) to talk about how he could move his product (an interactive video call) from Stockholm, Sweden to the UK. This was really enjoyable to share my knowledge of the UK and marketing tactics with him.

I  know that I know a lot about marketing but I also have so much to learn, hence I read books, listen to podcasts, listen to vlogs, follow marketers etc.

I've been focusing a lot this week on connecting with people on LinkedIn that I can bring value to and also engaging in their posts. People like CEO's, Managing Directors and Heads of Marketing departments.

I've spend a lot of time on Quora this week, answering people's questions and using their questions to come up with content on LinkedIn too. If one person is asking the question, I can assure you, more than 1 person wants the answer.

I've been working with Leon Marseglia to create some graphics for his social media profile. I've been using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to do so. It's been really enjoyable and I am leaning to do more designs in my spare time, just for fun.

Finally, next weeks episode will be the final one of the chapter, then I will have a month or two break and come back with more exciting content. Next weeks episode will look more into reflecting over whats happened during this current chapter. I'll see you next Sunday (31/05/2020).

C3 | Episode 24 - Beginnings and endings

C3 | Episode 24 - Beginnings and endings

In this podcast I cover why I read. It's more than just to learn. It's about pushing the needle to get ahead. It's about taking a step closer to who I want to become. I also share tips on why you should get started and how to take the first step in reading.

I also cover opportunities and chances. You have to be open to opportunities in order to get them.

Beginnings and endings always occur and sometimes it's at the same time. This week a lot of poeple finished their coursework for university for the last time. Now its a waiting game until out of lockdown until they graduate and move into the workplace. A huge ending, and a huge beginning. My girlfriend is one of those people.

I share my thoughts about positivity and negativity. Sometimes its hard to hold onto positivity and negativity can seep into your life. You have to remember why you began in order to stay in the mindset.

About 8 years ago I got a necklace from my sister, it probably cost her about £12 from a company like Asos. But, I wear it almost everyday. In some ways I channel my energy through that object to work harder. Do you do anything similar?

C3 | Episode 23 - Aeroplane falling

C3 | Episode 23 - Aeroplane falling

This week I have been learning about negotiating deals from a book called Never Split The Difference by Chris Voss. From FBI hostage situations to negotiating car deals, this guy has negotiated everything. The trick is not saying no, but instead asking questions starting with how and what.

I had a call with Adib Bamieh, Founder of Bamboo Orchard. He taught me about the different situations founders/co-founders go through and suggested I plan for these worst case scenarios. He also changed my perspective on investment. He said a business is like a plane falling. Investment just lifts the plane higher. But as you get investment, usually you hire more people, making the plane become heavier. My job as the founder is to figure out how to lift the plane before it hits the ground.

In terms of my company, all action is currently on hold but I am still planning. Sometimes, its not the right time and you have to wait. I am waiting for the lockdown to be lifted to then move forward. Therefore, it means I have a lot of free time right now to learn and plan.

C3 | Episode 22 - Not as far as you think

Your goals aren't as far as you think, the people you look up to are only a few steps away.

If you're on LinkedIn, I would really appreciate it if you could fill out my survey here: My Linkedin Survey

Sometimes we are faced with decisions that we have to make, decisions that we already know the right answer to but its difficult. This week, I was impacted by this.

Yesterday I had a call with Michael Simmons and he changed my perspective about business and the industry in 1 hour.

Opportunity is all around us, you just have to be open to opportunity to come to you. Open your eyes. Companies are crying out for people like you on their LinkedIn profiles. You're just one connection away. You never know where opportunity will come from.

C3 | Episode 21 - Blogging

C3 | Episode 21 - Blogging

This week I worked on my Ikigai, really trying to find where I can bring most value to the world. But I struggled on one part of it, what the world needs? I am going to speak to a friend of mine to see if she can help me find clarity in my life and figure out where I am going moving forward. She will be able to give me a different perspective and help me move onto the next level.

From doing this task, helping others and speaking to people I have found that I really like helping people and using my knowledge and experience to help others progress.

The course mentioned last week is something I am going to be doing but I want to make sure I am putting all the effort of the course in the right direction.

I also started a new job on Monday, a sales and marketing role in an influencer marketing agency. I have really been enjoying it. And by Tuesday I had already got in one lead. For no previous experience I was quite surprised.

Blogging is a great way to 10X your business or personal brand. Writing down questions that your customers or audience have, and then answering them in a blog or any content in a non-bias way, will really help position you as an expert in your field. Listen to the podcast to find out more.

I have been using an app recently called Streaks. It's a great way to make sure you build habits such as exercising, reading or even brushing your teeth twice a day. Check it out by searching it on your app store.

C3 | Episode 20 - Content Creation

C3 | Episode 20 - Content Creation

During this episode I have broken down my current new content creation strategy. From editing, to getting subtitles, it's all in there.

Recently I have been reading They Ask, You Answer by Marcus Sheridan. I'm on page 101 and so far he is talking about blogging and answering every question that your customers have in your content. This could also be applied to personal branding and videos online.

I am also starting a new 12.5 hour job at an influencer marketing agency on Monday (20th April 2020) to help with marketing and sales. This will be a really good learning experience for me and I can bring a lot of value to the company.

I am also looking to go on a business course which helps with setting the foundations of a company but also the scaling and sales side too. I am not entirely sure when I will start this 90 day course, but it will be soon. In this podcast I cover an overview of what the course includes.

At the end of this podcast I talk about a creative challenge, set by Tyler Babin, that I am going to be working on. If you want to take part, find the video talking about the rules of the challenge here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBxp-WhdlvA

C3 | Episode 19 - Ikigai

C3 | Episode 19 - Ikigai

Sometimes we feel guilty for resting and not working due to seeing everyone else working. Especially when we are seeing people in different time zones. But often, resting is the best thinig for us as in the long term it can make us more productive. I felt all these feelings whilst I was ill.

I recently finished a book called Ikigai - Discover your reason for being by Justyn Barnes. It had a Venn Diagram in it that I am going to be implementing into my life over the next week. The points in this diagram are listed below:

- What you love

- What the world needs

- What you can be paid for

- What you are good at

The way I would suggest to implement this is by listing all of your answers to each of these points and seeing how you can meet as many of these points as possible to feel more balanced in life.

This comes with me leaning more into what I enjoy. That includes trying more things, engaging more on LinkedIn and also bring more value in my content.

A huge opportunity is coming tomorrow (13/04/2020). Find out more in the post I put up tomorrow on LinkedIn. You can find my profile link below.

C3 | Episode 16 - Switch Up

This week I am switching things up. Podcast episodes are going to be a bit more fast paced and high energy. From now on, podcasts featuring just me will be slightly shorter and include:

- 1-2 main points

- 1 point inspired by the world around me (News, Someones content, a book etc)

- A quick update on my company

In this podcast, I talk about recieving a bunch of letters as the tax year comes to an end. It was a really weird feeling to know I have certain debts to pay and also preparing documents for my accountant.

I also mention the Coronavirus, but insead of the negatives (like all other Coronavirus podcasts), I am talking about the positives. My experience with flexible working and the huge opportunity for public speakers in included within that.

A video of me speaking (as mentioned) can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQAkn-3gh9E

And the accompanying article is here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/water-particle-ocean-gareth-rafferty

C3 | Episode 14 - My Evening Journal

C3 | Episode 14 - My Evening Journal

This week I started using an evening journal called Five Minutes in the Evening. I have never really used a proper journal before and so this one helps guide your thoughts so that you know what to write down. I came up with a little technique which I have found works for me. It's called the PEA approach. P = Point, E = Emotion, A = Answer. The point is the top line thought. The emotion is the thought explained or a little more in depth and the answer counter-acts the emotion, telling you that you are good enough. Just click play to see this in action.

I spoke to a guy that I met on LinkedIn this week called David Thomas. He is a public speaker and shared some of his top tips, including a piece of business advice. He said for you to close the deal on a sale you need someone that has the need, authority, money and urgency to buy your product/service. I break this down more and give a few examples on this in this episode.

Try things differently. A point in my diary that I cannot stress enough. Huge people have said "if you do what you've always done, you will get what you've always got" and thats so true. You have to try different things to see what sticks. And once something sticks, keep doing that, but also try new things. Something might stick better.

I talk about a lot more in this podcast so feel free to click play.

C3 | Episode 13 - The boy on the train

C3 | Episode 13 - The boy on the train

What happens when we die? Nobody knows. But here's my theory. Maybe when we die, we just go into the dream state. Maybe when people speak about 'Hell' they are refering to not lucid dreaming and thus constantly having no control over what you dream about.

On the train home on Monday evening, there was a young boy. He was asking his parent/carer why he learns History in school. 'History is for people that want to be a Historian' he said. He asked a few other questions of a similar nature and it gave me  a real sense of gratitude and appreciation as I used to be like him when I was about his age. I question the world around me and asking questions that people called 'weird'.

I am starting an evening journal in the next few days, trying to build up an evening routine, so I will keep you posted on that.

I had a tough conversation with my girlfriend this week about why I am starting a company and not just joining one that's doing a similar thing. And the truth is I just have a feeling that this is right for me and I want to make a difference on the world. Feelings are often hard to explain but I just feel like I am doing the right thing and it makes me happy.

I often stay to myself, 'today could be the day' and 'the first client could be just down the road, don't quit', but how longs the road? Is there an alternative road I could take? Is there a way I could make this vehicle faster?

C3 | Episode 12 - Radio

C3 | Episode 12 - Radio

This week I went to BBC Radio Derby. I got this opportunity by speaking to a colleague at work who happened to know somebody who works there. Truth is I went in with no expectations, just wanting to learn what they do, get a tour and try and provide value. One of the people who works there, her husband works in podcasting too and might have a chat with me in the future. Opportunity is everywhere, you don't know where it's hiding until you look for it.

Stop copying people, your journey is your own.

Today (Sunday 16th February) I spoke to a guy named Tom Peyton. I met him on LinkedIn and we have been chatting for a few months now. Today he shared some tips with me about public speaking and sales.

- For public speaking he said - Try and get people at events where your target audience is there but your competition is not. Then you have noone else doing what you do, it shows your expertise and makes you highly valued in the room. Great point which I had nver thought of. For example, if you're in marketing, don't go to a marketing event, go to an event where sport companies are (if thats your target audience) then talk about marketing.

- In regards to sales he shared a tip. This tip is called Lemlist. He said build an email list then send them an email via Lemlist sharing 1 piece of value on how they could improve their website, marketing, personal brand (whatever the service you're offering is) then say "Ihave more ideas if you are interested in a chat?" This value first approach establishes your expertise whilst also making them want more free info.

- If you're like me and wondering how to get email, after finding companies there is a LinkedIn Google Chrome extension called Hunter.io that will pull emails from company pages on LinkedIn.

Dreams are not just something we put up with when we sleep. You can control them. Learning to control them can help you navigate problems in your waking life. I am currently reading Why We Dream by Alice Robb which really got me thinking of how I can be more effective in my day to day life. Monitoring sleep and learning to control my dreams may be the answer.

Everyone has different strategies to planning, some prefer to plan more, some prefer less but there is a state of overplanning. Sometimes when we get extremely passionate about something we also get nervous of messing things up which can cause overplanning. Keep an eye on how much you plan, and put in the action to balance out planning vs action.

What is your vision of success? Success is defined by you, it may be found in relationships, career, legacy or something else. Only you can define it. So what's your definition of success?

Time management is difficult. Especially when you're working full time and also trrying to build a company. And sometimes there needs to be a clear boundary between the two. Reason being, sometimes the company you're building can leak into your full time job. That means you stop meeting the expections of the company you work full time at. It's a balance game, one that I am still working on.

C3 | Episode 10 - 2020

C3 | Episode 10 - 2020

Happy 2020 to everyone listening. It's the first episode of 2020. In this episode I begin by going through a few inspiring quotes that I heard that I just couldn't go without sharing. These quotes were from Les Brown and Tom Bilyeu.

Then I move onto talking about how it felt to get my first lead through my website. It was really fulfilling and kind of like a verification that I am onto something and I can't give up because people want what I am offering and it is valuable.

I share an update on how the whole revamp process is going and update you guys on where I want the company to be by the time I finish university in 2021.

What are your goals for 2020? My singular goal is to read 12 books by December 31st. I don't know how many books I read last year but I am determind to keep track of how many I read in 2020.

I have an idea but I need your input. Should I start editing my podcast and adding in small snippets of conversations I have about my business or leave it as it is? If I have a guest on the podcast it will stay with the same layout but when I am by myself, this is something I was thinking of doing. What are your thoughts? Should I mix up the way I do my podcast or do you prefer how it is currently? Feel free to message me on any social media or email down below to tell me your thoughts.

C3 | Episode 9 - Revamp

C3 | Episode 9 - Revamp

This week I did my first LinkedIn Live. I have been waiting a while but when I got it I really wanted to use it. I was nervous and excited and so I went out there and recorded my first live video on LinkedIn. I spoke about personal branding, what it was like for me to start a podcast, public speaking tips and tricks and how I got started in public speaking. If you want to watch it, check out the link here: LinkedIn Live

I also finished 2 books this week. #Live20 by Luke Williams and Podcasting Marketing Strategy by Ciaran Rogers and Daniel Rowles

#Live20 is all about eating frogs. And by frogs I mean large tasks. He talks about breaking them down into smaller 20 minute tasks (frog bites) in order to be more productive and focused. So I tried it, and it really does work. It is very similar to the Pomodoro technique which I have tried previous.

Podcasting Marketing Strategy talks a lot about starting, managing and marketing a podcast, but didn't really cover anything in regards to how to record. One feature of the book I did like however, was the toolkits at the end of every chapter. These toolkits include all the tools mentioned in that chapter. This is really good if you want to go back to the book as it makes it quick and easy to find the tools they talked about.

I am revamping my services and my website. I am doing this as I felt that I could bring more value to my client base and wanted to redefine my services so they are all stronger. This also means I am updating my website, making it more user friendly but also adding a larger range of imagery.

In this podcast episode I also share my Christmas plans as well as my goal to read at least 12 books over the course of next year and I am using an app called Read More in order to help me do so.

I am taking a break from the podcast over Christmas to give us all more time to spend with friends and family. I will be back on February 2nd 2020.

Thank you so much for listening over the past year and I hope you have enjoyed it. I really appreciate everyone being a part of my journey.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope everyone listening has an amazing 2020.

C3 | Episode 8 - Priorities

C3 | Episode 8 - Priorities

Who set's your priorities? One persons priorities for you are not the same as your priorities for youself. You are going to find things in your life that you think are of most importance, whereas the people around you might disagree. And this will always be the case. So how do you decide what to prioritise? You have to make the decision of what to prioritise.

You have to execute. You have to show the actions you are doing. It's go time. I need to execute more too.

I also need to be more proactive in getting things done. Often we ask for help a lot to get answers, but we have Google now. And sometimes just trying something can be a lot more impactful. It may take slightly longer, but it will be a huge learning lesson for you. Work it out.

I have been listening to a lot of motivational speeches including Eric Thomas, Tony Robbins and Elon Musk. They all talk about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, but never say how. Today, the how fell into place. So I share that with you in this podcast. You have to put yourself in a position where you cannot turn back.

Have a great week.

C3 | Episode 6 - Emotions

C3 | Episode 6 - Emotions

So, how did my birthday go? Well in short, it was amazing. It's one of the first times people have actually showed up for me in my life which rarely/never happens so it was really nice to see everyone come together on my birthday.

This week I cried. I didn't feel like I was doing enough. I wanted my business to move faster, to do more. For a second, I dropped the ball and became short sighted. Luckily my girlfriend reminded me that it's going to be difficult because I am also working full time and helped me see my path clearer.

When travelling to and from work I walk to and from the train station. I listen to motivation on the way to the station and this week one episode just resonated with me. One by Les Brown. He said everyone hits the wall. You get excited, tell your friends about it, you get fired up, and then youhit the wall. Truth is, most people get stunned, knocked down by the wall and turn back. He said the people that succeed are the ones that get knocked down by the wall and look up and have the tenacity to say, I am supposed to be over there, then persevere in order to get to that next level. If you want the link to this video, I can try and find it, just drop me a message or email with the details below and I will see if I can find it.

No matter how hard you try, everyone hit's the wall.

Have a great week.

C3 | Episode 5 - Birthdays

C3 | Episode 5 - Birthdays

I never really got the point of Birthdays, it's a day celebrating another year of being alive but also another year closer to dying. It's like a celebration for not dying over the last year. How strange. Right? What is your thoughts on Birthdays?Send your answers to my social media channels (listed below)

You need a voice.  Every has opinions they can share. Whether that's on a podcast, a vlog, a blog or just on social. Or all of them. People are starting podcast everywhere now, about anything. And not just business and personal development, but gaming, technology, social media, model trains, the weather, cars, beauty, different types of pens, whatever your passion is about, you should have a voice about it. And not just because I say so but because you can meet people all around the globe and make friends with people that have a similar view to yours. I've done it, and so can you.

Want to start a podcast, or need any help getting a voice? Message me on any of my social media channels below.

The podcasts mentioned in this podcast are:

1) The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett.

2) Too much time on our hand podcast (TMTOOH).

3) Business Wars.

Finally, goals are everything. Without goals and dreams, where would you be? You never know how close you are from getting an opportunity that will propel you to your goals and beyond. For example, I have recently found out that I am just 2 people from Gary Vaynerchuk and Grant Cardone. That's crazy. You are closer than you think.

This week I have been focusing on learning and improving. Both on podcasting, in business, and in my personal life. Reading has been an important part of this week and I am now reading 2 books. 1 about business, 1 about podcasting.

I have also been learning sales, with help from my good friend Evans Duren I have been learning how I can sales prospect for clients. I have been using a thing called the Chambers of Commerce to help find companies.

Finally this week I have been thinking a lot about whether what I see around me is what I want my life to look like in the future. And the answer is no. I want to live a better life than what I currently live. And so that comes with changes. One step at a time.

This is the final episode to Chapter 2 of this podcast Building from the bottom, but I will be back soon for Chapter 3 so keep an eye out on my social media below to find out when I will be back.

Thank you so much for listening, I appreciate every single one of you. If you ever want to chat about your journey, I will help as much as I can but feel free to contact me via my social media or email and say that you're from my podcast in the first message so I reply quicker.

Thanks again, have an awesome summer.

C2 | Episode 16 - Turn up the heat

C2 | Episode 16 - Turn up the heat

This week I have had deadlines, CV's to submit and my website. I had to create CV's because I am looking for a 1 year, full time contract, in social media marketing or influencer marketing. The heat is up in the air as I pressure myself to get the website out.

I have also had really deep and weird dreams. Maybe we are connected through dreams somehow. What are your thoughts on why we dream? Is there other dimensions that we are seeing into? Maybe it's alternate realities of the future?

For the first time this week I created a video saying, "Hi, I'm Gareth, CEO and Founder of New Found Media." It was so weird and I have been talking to my girlfriend about how "adulty" it is to build a team, get investors etc. It's crazy.

Thank you so much for listening. Don't forget to leave a review/comment. I am looking for guests so if you want to be a guest, then message me on one of my social media channels below.
