Ep 17 - Neal Reizer - Leadership & Building Great Teams

In Episode 17, I was lucky enough to connect up with Neal Reizer.  Neal is an exceptional leader and someone I am thoroughly happy to have run into in my career.  He was my SVP of development for several years and opened the door for many opportunities.  Neal is one of a handful of leaders who is humble enough to admit he doesn't know everything, but exceptional enough to really put that statement to the test.  He and I chat about information dashboard design, leadership, building teams, and all those crazy things that go into developing software at scale.

Information Dashboard Design was mentioned and is STILL a great text when it comes to putting the RIGHT information on the page.  It's on sale right now for $21 - use this link and support the channel: https://amzn.to/2XLdgOt

Also, Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink is available at: https://amzn.to/2KfcaTf

Thank you Neal for your time and investment in this channel and sharing your amazing mind with us.

I can't wait for our paths to cross again :)

Ep 16 - Question the Business Value

Ep 16 - Question the Business Value

Video Version: https://youtu.be/j0E6SeGfGVc

In this episode, I recap the last few episodes you may have missed before diving into one of the most valuable lessons I’d ever been taught by one of my mentors.  “Question the Business Value” is a simple concept, but often overlooked as we try to convince others that our way is “right”.

Take a listen, then tell me what you think using the comment features.

Thanks for listening!

Ep 6 - Todd Ward - Dev Ops and Emotional Intelligence

Ep 6 - Todd Ward - Dev Ops and Emotional Intelligence

Todd Ward has built entire network operations centers, though I believe his most impressive achievement is his personal journey and growth over the years.  Todd completely changed the culture in our IT department through a tireless desire to do the right thing, assist his colleagues with their needs, and applying Dev Ops principles.

We speak a little about The Unicorn Project, a book by Gene Kim about Dev Ops: https://amzn.to/37PEeqB

If you'd like to join us in reading the book, pick it up and check back in about 8 weeks for our show on this great book.

Ep 4 - Building Great Teams by Jon Freeman

In this week's episode, I speak about the steps necessary to create highly effective teams.  There are three major sections - my #1 trait that successful teams all share, the simple analogy that you can measure team structure effectiveness against, and the 55-year-old model that explains how teams develop in stages.

George Ortiz is a dynamic software engineer who has successfully made the switch to Product Manager now at Facebook.  George takes us through the challenges he faced on the way to improving his career and lessons he's learned in software engineering. I won't spoil the show, but he literally FELL into software development as a career when he had different plans originally.
