THE REAL ,MR BIG -- THE TRUE STRORY OF THE COLUMBIAN BUSINESS GENIUS REFUGEE WHO BECAME THE UK'S COCAINE KINGPIN
The Real Mr. Big: How a Colombian Refugee Became the United Kingdom’s Most Notorious Cocaine Kingpin By Ron Chepesiuk, Jesus Ruiz Henao 4.10 · Rating details · 10 ratings · 5 reviews Born in 1960, Jesus Ruiz Henao grew up poor, but wanted to be rich like the drug dealers he saw growing up in the cocaine-producing region of Colombia’s Valle of the Cauca. To realize his ambition, Ruiz Henao moved to London, United Kingdom, in 1985. There he and his wife settled in the quiet suburb of Hendon, where he held down mundane but respectable cleaning and bus driving jobs. At least to outward appearances ... Actually, Ruiz Henao kept a low profile while he built a wide-ranging drug distribution network that extended from Colombia to Spain and Europe and to the United Kingdom. For years, he stayed one step ahead of law enforcement, making more than a billion pounds over a ten-year period. However, it was a risky business with law enforcement on one side and ruthless competitors on the other. By the summer of 2003, Ruiz Henao decided to get out of the drug business. But he finally made the one mistake that would get him caught. It cost him a 17-year prison sentence, with more tacked on when he tried to make one last deal from behind prison walls. THE REAL MR. BIG, co-written by Ruiz Henao with bestselling author Ron Chepesiuk, is the story of how an ambitious Colombian immigrant set up a sophisticated drug trafficking enterprise that earned him law enforcement's description as "the Pablo Escobar of British drug trafficking."

Robyn Maharaj -- GRILLING DAHMER. The brilliant Interrogation of Jeffery Dahmer by Det. Pat Kennedy
In the late hours of July 22, 1991, Detective Patrick “Pat” Kennedy of the Milwaukee Police Department was asked to respond to a possible homicide. Little did he know that he would soon be delving into the dark mind of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, the “Milwaukee Cannibal” Jeffrey Dahmer. As the media clamored for details, Kennedy spent the next six weeks, sixteen hours a day, locked in an interrogation room with Dahmer. There the 31-year-old killer described in lurid detail how he lured several young men to his apartment where he strangled, sexually assaulted, dismembered, and in some cases, cannibalized his victims. In GRILLING DAHMER: The Interrogation of “The Milwaukee Cannibal” the reader is taken on a horrifying tour into the mind of evil as Kennedy patiently, meticulously, listened to unspeakable horrors so that a monster would be taken off the streets forever.

DEATH ON OCEAN BLVD. CAITLIN ROTHER RETURNS WITH A FABULOUS NEW BOOK
The call came on the morning of July 13, 2011, from the historic Spreckels Mansion, a lavish beachfront property in Coronado, California, owned by pharmaceutical tycoon and multimillionaire Jonah Shacknai. When authorities arrived, they found the naked body of Jonah’s girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, gagged, her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her. Jonah’s brother, Adam, claimed to have found Rebecca hanging by a rope from the second-floor balcony. On a bedroom door in black paint were the cryptic words: SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER. Was this scrawled message a suicide note or a killer’s taunt? Rebecca’s death came two days after Jonah’s six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca’s care. Authorities deemed Rebecca’s death a suicide resulting from her guilt. But who would stage either a suicide ora murder in such a bizarre, elaborate way? Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother weaves stunning new details into a personal yet objective examination of the sensational case. She explores its many layers—including the civil suit in which a jury found Adam Shacknai responsible for Rebecca’s death, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department bombshell decision to reconfirm its original findings. As compelling as it is troubling, this controversial real-life mystery is a classic American tragedy that evokes the same haunting fascination as the JonBenet Ramsey and O.J. Simpson cases. “Rother’s meticulous journalism shines through in this authoritative account of the Rebecca Zahau death incident. If you think you know this case, think again. And read this book.” —Katherine Ramsland, professor of forensic psychology and author of The Psychology of Death Investigations

"LSD CAUSES PARANOIA AMONG THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER TAKEN IT" -- TIMOTHY LEARY. DENNIS MCDOUGLE IS OUR SPECIAL GUEST
A search for the truth behind the DEA’s life imprisonment of acid's most famous martyr. Operation White Rabbit traces the rise and fall—and rise and fall again—of the psychedelic community through the life of the man known as the “Acid King:” William Leonard Pickard. Pickard was a legitimate genius, a follower of Timothy Leary, a con artist, a womanizer, and a believer that LSD would save lives. He was a foreign diplomat, a Harvard fellow, and the biggest producer of LSD on the planet—if you believe the DEA. A narrative for fans of Michael Pollan’s How to Change Your Mind, Pickard’s personal story is set against a fascinating chronicle of the social history of psychedelic drugs from the 1950s on. From LSD distribution at UC Berkeley to travelling the world for the State Department, Pickard’s story is one of remarkable genius—that is, until a DEA sting named “Operation White Rabbit” captured him at an abandoned missile silo in Kansas. Pickard, the DEA said, was responsible for 90 percent of the world’s production of lysergic acid. The DEA announced to the public that they found 91 pounds of LSD. In reality, the haul was seven ounces. They found none of the millions of dollars Pickard supposedly amassed, either. But nonetheless, he is now serving two consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole. Pickard has become acid’s best-known martyr in the process, continuing his advocacy and artistic pursuits from jail. Pickard has successfully sued the US government because his requests for information on his case returned two blank DEA documents. But the appeals of his sentence have continually failed. The author visits him regularly in jail in an effort to find the truth.

THE MURDER OF BIGGIE SMALLS -- SPECIAL GUEST CATHY SCOTT
The Notorious B.I.G. exploded onto the hip-hop scene with his platinum-selling album Ready to Die in 1995. The life of B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls--born Christopher Wallace--had come a long way from the years spent in his Bed-Sty neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, where he dropped out of school at age seventeen to pursue the culture of the street and master his rapping style. It was on the street that Smalls began emceeing his original raps and was discovered by Sean "Puffy" Combs, who recognized Smalls's potential and took his gangsta image to the next level. Respected journalist Cathy Scott has traveled from Las Vegas to New York and Los Angeles, interviewing those involved with Smalls and reviewing court documents and police reports surrounding the case in order to tell the real story of the murder of Biggie Smalls. The Murder of Biggie Smalls uncovers what those around Smalls and Shakur don't want to be revealed, including: The possibility that Smalls may have owed a gang money and was killed to collect on the debt. That Puffy Combs, Smalls's record producer, may have hired Crips members as bodyguards, who in turn killed Smalls over a financial beef. That Combs may have been the intended victim instead of Smalls. The investigation into Suge Knight, Tupac Shakur's record producer, and the suspicion that he may have masterminded Smalls's murder from his California prison cell. Smalls's mother's belief that the federal government was involved in the mruder and that police have conspired not to solve the crime. Why many surrounding Smalls feel the police have neglected the case to the point of letting the murderer get away--while being unwilling to offer any information themselves or assist the police in their efforts.

KILLER CULTS -- STEVEN AND JOYCE SINGULAR, BURL BARER, AND FACT CHECKER MARK BOYER
What’s scarier than a murderer? Someone with the charisma to compel others to kill for them . . . or to kill themselves. Meet these cult leaders–and get an inside look at their beliefs and how they controlled others. Some cults, led by leaders like Charlie Manson, Jim Jones, and David Koresh, are notorious. But others are less well known, such as Shoko Asahara and his doomsday cult, Aum Shinrikyo, who orchestrated the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. Or Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, who founded the Order of the Solar Temple, a doomsday cult that led to the death of 51 members by murder or suicide. Then there is Marshall Applewhite, leader of Heaven’s Gate, who, along with 38 followers, killed themselves in the belief that the Hale-Bopp comet signaled the arrival of a spaceship that would transport them to a higher plane of existence. What makes cult leaders so compelling is their often-unfathomable power over their adherents. Why do people kill others or themselves for a questionable set of beliefs? Killer Cults tells the stories behind both famous and unfamiliar cults, and the people behind them. Across a series of profiles, we learn the jaw-dropping truth behind some of the most mystifying and deadly cults, and their leaders, all of whom led their followers down a dark, murderous path.

THE NIGHT STALKER -- FRANK C,. GIRARDOT JR. RECALLS THE SUMMER OF TERROR THAT GRIPPED LOS ANGELES.
Best-selling author Frank C. Girardot has been called the "Demon dog of true crime" by none other than Black Dahlia author James Ellroy. Praise for his writing has come from authors as varied as Walter Kirn and Michael Fleeman. His books have ranged from "Name Dropper", a chronicle on the bizarre antics of a murdering imposter who called himself Clark Rockefeller to "Betrayal in Blue" a look at cocaine dealing cops in 1980s New York City, which was co-authored by Burl Barer and Ken Eurell, one of the actual cops. In all of his writing, Girardot's ability to interview complicated characters like drug kingpin Adam Diaz, German imposter Christian Gerhartsreiter and serial arsonist John Orr, add a depth to his story telling that is often lacking in police procedurals masking as true crime. In each of his books, Girardot has displayed a unique ability to locate long-hidden public records and distill narratives from complex court records that brings his stories to life. Girardot's career in journalism began as a copyboy with the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner. As a reporter he covered stories as fascinating as the O.J. Simpson murder trial and as complex as the mistaken gang execution of three trick-or-treaters on Halloween 1993 in the Los Angeles area. Most recently, Girardot wrote a weekly column on the 2016 election for The Hill. Born in Texas in 1960, Richard Ramirez was an American serial killer who killed at least 14 people and raped and tortured at least two dozen more, mostly during the spring and summer of 1985. After developing epilepsy as a child, he became a heavy drug user and cultivated an interest in Satanism, which became a calling card for investigators at his crime scenes. Apprehended in August 1985, Ramirez was sentenced to death at the conclusion of his trial in 1989. He spent the remainder of his days at California's San Quentin Prison, before dying from cancer on June 7, 2013, at age 53.

RING OF HELL / BREAKSHOT ---- INSIDE THE WWE WITH MATTHEW RANDAZZO & WEARING A WIRE IN THE MOB WITH KENJI GALLO
Ring of Hell is excellent in its research and exploration of how wrestling can be fraught with sadistic individuals that are only too willing to prey upon those hoping to "live their dreams." What happened with Chris Benoit, his wife and young son was tragic in every sense of the word, but, as the book details, how can you not expect such an insane demise for individuals participating within such an insane world? As each part of Chris Benoit's career is detailed - starting in Stu Hart's "Dungeon," idolizing "The Dynamite Kid" (a woefully tragic individual in his own right), working within the Stampede Wrestling Promotion, moving on to Japan and then ultimately becoming a star in the ECW, WCW and WWE promotions - you see how a naive individual participates in ritualized abuse and then succumbs when steroid and medication abuse compounds the damage received over multiple years. BREAKSHOT -"Crammed with the kind of characters and detail that make pages turn and moviemakers salivate, self-described 'mobster, drug lord, and porn kingpin' Gallo’s story of life as a criminal and mafia associate is tantalizing material. ... Honest, critical, occasionally remorseful and always entrancing, this criminal memoir will keep readers on the edge of their seats."

FRANK C GIRARDOT JR wrote the first book about the Rockefeller Mystery . Frank shares the amazing true story.
Prepare to be shocked as the grisly details about the murder of computer geek John Sohus are revealed in Frank C. Girardot s new book, Name Dropper: Investigating the Clark Rockefeller Mystery. Sohus, a twenty-something resident of San Marino, California, was allegedly murdered in 1985 by con man Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who has become infamous under his most-known alias, Clark Rockefeller. Rockefeller, the prime suspect in Sohus murder, may have been the last person to see him alive. Nine years after his death, Sohus bones were dug up in the backyard of the home he once shared with his wife Linda, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Rockefeller s 2008 arrest for abducting his daughter put him squarely in the cross-hairs of the decades-old Sohus homicide case. Upon Rockefeller s arrest, Girardot began piecing together the convoluted tale in a series of articles for the Pasadena Star-News. His research resulted in Name Dropper, which reveals inside information about the case Girardot says is the most fantastic he s seen in his 25 years as an investigative reporter.

Stevie Cameron, famed Canadian investigative journalist! On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story of Vancouver’s Missing Women.
Covering the case of one of North America’s most prolific serial killer gave Stevie Cameron access not only to the story as it unfolded over many years in two British Columbia courthouses, but also to information unknown to the police – and not in the transcripts of their interviews with Pickton – such as from Pickton’s long-time best friend, Lisa Yelds, and from several women who survived terrifying encounters with him. You will now learn what was behind law enforcement’s refusal to believe that a serial killer was at work. Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside. It was February 2002 before Robert William Pickton was arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion. The guilty verdict was upheld, and finally this unprecedented tale of true crime can be told.

NYT BEST SELLING AUTHOR TOD GOLDBERG and RABBI MARK BOROVITZ -- CRIMINAL BECOMES RABBI FACT AND FICTION
IMPROVED AUDIO REMIX CRIMINAL BECOMES RABBI : Tod Goldberg wrote it as fiction in Gangsterland and Gangster Nation, and Mark Borovitz lived it for real in Holy Thief Fiction meets real life--Mark Borovitz was a mobster, gangster, con man, gambler, thief, and a drunk. He is now the rabbi at Beit T'Shuvah in Los Angeles, the House of Return, a rehabilitation facility for addicts of all kinds. Tod Goldberg wrote Gangsterland and Gangster Nation about a mobster who hides out as a Rabbi in Las Vegas. Now a real mobster turned Rabbi and Tod Goldberg come together to compare fiction with reality. “GANGSTER NATION punches even harder than the excellent GANGSTERLAND did: against the backdrop of 9/11, everybody’s roughed-up and bleeding, and nobody’s hiding it well. Tod Goldberg’s weird world is getting THE SOPRANOS-good, and THE SOPRANOS-funny: he can hit you high, low, or straight in the gut. Meshugener wiseguys. It’ll make you a better killer – and a better rabbi.” — Bill Beverly, award-winning author of Dodgers. “Tod Goldberg’s brilliant Gangster Nation is hilarious, complex, and a total page-turner. It’s also a little insane, in the best possible way.” —Lisa Lutz, New York Times bestselling author of The Passenger

BLOOD AND GHOSTS: SPECIAL GUESTS KATHERINE RAMSLAND AND Singer Songwriter ERIC MERCURY
What if forensic and paranormal investigation deliberately crossed paths? Can forensics aid ghost hunters, and might ghost hunters who use these tools one day assist in the cause of justice? The answers to these questions are explored within the pages of "Blood & Ghosts". Forensics is an applied science and many of its sub-disciplines have a kinship with ghost hunting: its tools and technology were devised to record and analyze evidence or behavior. Given this shared approach to solving mysteries, it makes sense to see how these disciplines could be brought together. From missing persons to mass and serial murder, it’s time to use all of our best resources to solve crimes.

SAVAGE SON COREY MITCHEL 2010
Thomas Bartlett "Bart" Whitaker arranged with two friends to kill his parents and younger brother Kevin. The much-indulged son of a well-to-do family, he resented the fact that his cousins would inherit the family business. And he was tired of waiting for his "share". Knowing that his parents were heavily insured and that their assets were significant, he cold-bloodedly arranged for them to be murdered. To deflect suspicion away from himself, he instructed his henchmen to make the murders look like an interrupted burglary. He scheduled the murders on the night that the family was having a celebratory dinner at an expensive local restaurant. Believing that their son was soon to graduate from college, the proud parents presented him with a $4,000 watch to express their pride in him. When the family arrived home, all four were shot. The plan was for the parents and Kevin to die and for Bart to be slightly injured. But Bart's young friend wasn't a professional. He killed Tricia and Kevin Whitaker, but only wounded Kent Whitaker. Mistake #1. And the rifling of the house that was supposed to make it look like a burglary was poorly done, looking like the fake job it was. Mistake #2. When the police started looking suspiciously at Bart Whitaker he bolted for Mexico and hid out there until the man whom he had paid to get him there turned him into the police and collected the reward. Mistake #3. Three strikes and you're out, even with relatives as naive and gullible as the Whitaker/Bartlett family.

This crime stands apart as the last mob lynching in Kansas. RAGE -- GARY C KING did our show as a special favor to me - he doesn't do many radio interviews. A true delight having a true crime master on the show.
Divorce Is Violent. . . Darren Mack had it all. A beautiful home in Reno. A lovely wife. Three children. And a million-dollar business. Then his wife Charla filed for divorce, winning a large settlement in a heated courtroom battle. According to friends, Mack was "angry." They had no idea how far his fury would take him... Revenge Is Bloody. . . Over the next year, the rage only intensified. Finally, Darren Mack snapped, stabbing and killing his ex-wife in his condo. Hours later, he stalked and shot their divorce judge in broad daylight. Before the blood had even cooled and law enforcement could react, he fled to Mexico, eluding police hot on his trail. Justice Is Final. . . The case made headlines nationwide, propelled by lurid details of Mack's wild "swinger" lifestyle, the shocking discovery of explosives in his apartment, and the chillingly prophetic remark made by his wife: "Someday he's going to kill me. . ." Catching him was the hardest part. . .

Yes, we share the same last name and a certain degree of international fame, but Sergio has more fame in more genres than even I. PRISON RIOT -- that doesn't mean that being in prison is a laugh riot. GLENN LANGOHR started writing in solitary confinement. and hasn't stopped.
Glenn Langohr! No one messes when Glenn flexes! Before becoming a best selling author, Glenn Langohr ran away from a broken home and entered the drug war with abandon. Business with the Mexican Mafia and Hell's Angels became a way of life until the Criminal Justice system interrupted him. In prison he was involved in riots and spent years in the hole. From solitary confinement he started writing and hasn't stopped since. B.J, a white inmate, serving time on drug charges, gets caught up in a Mexican gang war. The northern California Mexicans demand that the southern California Mexicans keep their shirts on to cover up their gangland tattoos. The prison explodes into chaos as each building erupts in deadly violence. For B.J, the war isn't over when he and over a hundred inmates get housed in solitary confinement, it's just beginning. For getting involved, he's labeled a southern Mexican ganster. The hardcore action unfolds like a movie in this bare bones thriller of true crime. "I want to show the world and the students and leaders of tomorrow, that we are only building bigger criminals by locking up low level offenders. In prison, an addiction is bred into an affliction much harder to escape." Help him show the world redemption is possible, buy and share his books. The author will gift his books FREE from the Kindle store to those who can't afford it. Glenn Langohr firstname.lastname@example.org lockdownpubishing.com

When the Amish go to War -- My old pal Pat Craig and his buddy Murray have taken Amish fiction into a new world of authentic conflict
My childhood pal Pat Craig always was the best k ind of rebel - the smart kind. A best selling author of Amish fiction series, he stunned his publisher by delivering a novel with blood and the carnage and conflict of war dripping from the otherwise pristine pages of Christian niche paperbacks. Pat's instincts were correct -- readers of his Amish fiction books were crying out for the authenticity of real life, real conflict and real test of faith. Full details in this episode where Pat and his writing partner, Murray, join Buwrl and Mark for an unusual hour of exploring the world of writing publishing and dealing with other forms of evil.

Charles Manson NOW (2011) - Excellent book and excellent guest Marlin Marynick
From 2011: When we think of Charles Manson, the picture of him with his wild eyes is the image most often called to mind. That was, however, not only several years ago, it was several decades ago. Manson is still a paranoid schizophrenic who receives no mental health medication or treatment in prison, and has spent most of his years in solitary confinement, which doesn't bother him -- he's used to it. Marlin Marynick, a nice chap from Regina (that's in Canada), somehow captured Charlie's attention.and not in a bad way. The result: a new book CHARLES MANSON NOW. The book is excellent, and Marlin was a fun guest on the radio show I do with Don Woldman.

DIXIE'S LAST STAND -- John Ferak tells the strange tale of murder and air fresheners
Dixie Shanahan had a terribly troubled and abusive marriage in the sleepy little town of Defiance, Iowa. Then one summer day in 2002, Dixie's mean and wicked husband was gone. Some of the local residents presumed that Scott packed his bags and left town. But others were skeptical. After all, Scott's brown Ford pick-up truck was still parked in his driveway. The disappearance mystified Defiance for more than a year. Then in late October, 2003, the truth emerged... or did it? The gray ranch along Third Avenue in the sleepy Midwestern town of less than 400 people was the recurring site of screaming, mad chaos and horrific domestic violence. Then one day, abusive husband Scott Shanahan was gone. Some thought he packed his bags and left town. Weeks passed. Months went by. Still no sign of the volatile wife beater. But what really happened to him was so shocking and so unbelievable that even grizzled, long-time law enforcement officials were aghast by the sight and awful smell. The town wondered why Dixie Shanahan managed to live with her husband's rotting body inside her master bedroom - for fourteen months. "In Dixie's Last Stand, journalist John Ferak gives us an impeccably researched and well-written account of the Dixie Shanahan case. The Iowa woman killed her husband after enduring years of abuse. Ferak weaves a gripping narrative while exploring important topics such as battered wife syndrome and mandatory sentencing laws. Highly recommended." - Robert Sberna, author of HOUSE OF HORRORS, the shocking true story of Anthony Sowell. "A well-written, and gripping depiction of 'battered wife syndrome'. ... This fascinating story will leave you asking yourself one question: Was the punishment that Dixie received in her case justified? Highly recommended

Dangerous Vows -- A Polygamous preacher has a wife who (gasp) wants an education. So, he murders her. Sean Goff is guest
Sean Goff was a dynamic Pentecostal minister who was already running his own church by the age of twenty-two. He had wed a pliable teenager and bent her to his will, eventually convincing her to agree to his secretly taking a second wife named Joy. Although at first the clandestine arrangement worked well, problems soon began to surface. Leif Wright, Sean’s friend and co-worker, confronted Sean about his hidden polygamous lifestyle, which threatened to scandalize their employer, a world-famous televangelist. Sean’s foray into polygamy led to his association with an online community where he earned respect by dispensing advice to other evangelical polygamists. He derided divorce as the sign of a weak man who didn’t know how to lead his women. It was especially troublesome to Sean when Joy hinted that she wasn’t happy and wanted to have a meaningful career. Then Joy suddenly disappeared, although friends continued to receive her e-mails. The messages seemed strange, and some wondered whether she was really traveling around Europe. Leif M. Wright is a publisher of a popular online newspaper, a journalist with more than 25 years of experience, a longtime ghost writer, a professional musician, a former pastor and an author of both fiction and non-fiction books.. He is winner of numerous Associated Press journalism awards and recipient of the prestigious Best of Gannett Award for the investigative series "Shout at the Devil."

DOOMSDAY CULTS --The World is Ending so Follow me off a Cliff. Allen R. Warren returns to the show.
Jim Jones convinced his 1000 followers they would all have to commit suicide since he was going to die. Shoko Asahara convinced his followers to release a weapon of mass destruction, the deadly sarin gas, on a Tokyo subway. The Order of the Solar Temple lured the rich and famous, including Princess Grace of Monaco, and convinced them to die a fiery death now on Earth to be reborn on a better planet called Sirius. Charles Manson convinced his followers to kill, in an attempt to incite an apocalyptic race war. These are a few of the doomsday cults examined in this book by bestselling author Alan R. Warren. Its focus is on cults whose destructive behavior was due in large part to their apocalyptic beliefs or doomsday movements. It includes details surrounding the massacres and a look into how their members became so brainwashed they committed unimaginable crimes at the command of their leader. Usually, when we hear about these cults and their massacres, we ask ourselves how it possibly happened. We could also ask ourselves, what then is the difference between a cult and a religion? We once had a small group of people who unquestionably followed a person who believed he was the son of God. Two thousand years later, that following is one of the most recognized religions in the world. This book in no way criticizes believing in God. Rather, it examines how a social movement grows into a full religion and when it does not. And what makes the conventional faiths such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism stand above groups such as the Branch Davidians or Children of God

ONCE UPON A TIME -- HARRY MCLEAN Award winning author with fantastic book (interview from 2011)
In 1989, Eileen Franklin, a young California housewife, claimed to recover a repressed memory of her father killing her playmate 20 years earlier. In a landmark trial, the father was charged and convicted of first-degree murder, based solely on his daughter's testimony. This book chronicles the trial, explores the remarkably dysfunctional Franklin family, and delves into the reliability of repressed memory as evidence in court. This version contains a 2011 Epilogue, which details the reasons for the reversal of George Franklin's conviction and the refusal of the district attorney to retry him for murder.

Jack the Ripper was Vincent Van Gogh? It sounds crazy, but possible. Dale Larner, author, is our guest
Vincent van Gogh was not as he seems. In 1888, at the age of 35, he was looking for something unique in art for the upcoming exhibition at the 1889 World’s Fair. He found that uniqueness in murder. He created the persona of Jack the Ripper over that summer and then reaped the power that came from murder when he traveled to London over the autumn to kill again and again as Jack the Ripper. But Van Gogh was a murderer long before he became Jack the Ripper. He made his first kill fifteen years earlier at the age of 20 when he was transferred from The Hague, Holland to London in May of 1873, by Goupil’s, the art dealer he worked for. It was believed Vincent first lived in the Battersea area in the S.E. district. He then moved to the nearby Brixton area in August, and on September 5, just five days before his mother’s September 10 birthday, the body parts of an unidentified woman were found floating in the River Thames. Vincent had moved and then had murdered. Nine months later, in the midst of being rejected by his landlady’s 19-year-old daughter, Vincent murdered again, and the lower half of a woman’s body was found in the Thames. Over the years, Van Gogh gave up on being an art dealer to be a preacher like his father, but when he failed at that, he turned to becoming a painter. His younger brother, Theo, then supported him financially for the last ten years of his life. Vincent moved back home to Holland but was thrown out by his father due to his contentious attitude. Then in 1885, after Vincent had returned to again live under his father’s roof, his preacher father was found dead on the threshold of his home one fine Sunday afternoon. Vincent’s sisters and others blamed him indirectly for their father’s sudden death because of the unrelenting arguing and trouble he had caused, but I believe the evidence shows Vincent was more directly responsible for his father’s death, and that, in fact, he laid hands on his preacher father and killed him. He was a serial killer, after all. Vincent then moved in with Theo in Paris in 1886, but there was a problem. Theo had an ex-girlfriend living in his apartment that he wanted out, and during a time when Theo returned to Holland for a visit, the body parts of a woman were found deposited in street urinals in Paris. Vincent had solved Theo’s problem. Vincent also traveled from Paris to London in 1887 for another murder, and a woman’s body parts were again found in the Thames. It was then in 1888 that Vincent moved to the South of France for something new in art and discovered that it was murder that would give him the power he needed for his paintings. He made several trips back to London from August to December and murdered seven women under the guise of his created persona, Jack the Ripper. He also killed another during this same time as himself, using his old method, making the total he killed in the year of the eights to be 8. After cutting off his ear at the end of 1888, Vincent was in and out of the hospital and was then committed to an asylum at his own request, where he then worked on the asylum director to obtain freedom to go out into the country to paint for days at a time. Once he had obtained his freedom, he used it to travel back to London, and he killed three more in 1889. Vincent’s final murder was his own. He shot himself in the stomach soon after he had moved closer to Paris, and he then died on July 29, 1890. His brother, Theo, then lost his mind from grief and guilt and died six months later. In VINCENT ALIAS JACK, the words and actions of Vincent van Gogh are meticulously matched up to those of Jack the Ripper. The evidence is overwhelming, and the conclusion is unavoidable—Vincent van Gogh was Jack the Ripper!

Burl Barer and partner, Don Woldman, hold court with journalist and author, Diane Dimond. According to the write up on Burl’s site: I’ve always had a weakness for strong women, and there are sure a lot of ’em in broadcasting. Among them is Diane Dimond, another exemplar of the phrase “Crime Hottie” Heck, Erin Moriarty of CBS and Amanda Lamb of NBC, not to mention Fox’s resident foxette, Lis Wiehl, Professor Janet McClellan, Katherine Ramsland, and many more have all earned that appellative as the compliment I bestow on journalists, authors and broadcasters who set the standard of excellence when it comes to reporting, analyzing, studying, and investigating crime. Reverently referred to as “Crime Hotties,” many of the guests on Barer’s radio show are strong, beautiful women who are experts in their fields. Burl and Don tackle some of the most serious issues, adding a special twist only the two of them can pull off! Tune in to Outlaw Radio at 2pm Pacific every Saturday for an always intriguing show

WISED UP-- From Mobster to Cooperating Witness. Meet Charlie, his FBI pal and the journalist who told his story!
Arson, loansharking, drug dealing, extortion - it was all in a day's work for Charlie Wilhelm. In Baltimore, an organized crime syndicate of over 200 men took orders from him and his partner, strong arm enforcer Billy Isaacs. For over twenty years, Charlie lived the sweet life, making $10,000 a week in untaxed cash. ORDERED TO KILL But everything changed in 1995, when Isaacs demanded that Wilhelm take out two men he suspected of cheating him. Charlie Wilhelm didn't want to kill but he didn't want to die, either. Turning to FBI agent Bruce Hall who'd grown up in the old neighborhood with Charlie, he became a double agent, working undercover against his former associates. Danger lay everywhere, from suspicious hoodlums to dirty cops and even a Mob tipster working in the U.S. Attorney's office. One misstep could spell death not only for Charlie, but for his wife and children. Yet Wilhelm's efforts not only saved lives- they resulted in twenty convictions for offenses ranging from bribery and conspiracy to drug dealing and murder. Now, in his own words, Charlie Wilhelm tells his incredible true story of a wild life lived on both sides of the law.

DEAD RECKONING REVISITED.... CAITLIN ROTHER'S SHOCKING UPDATE OF HER TRUE CRIME CLASSIC
Tom and Jackie Hawks loved their life in retirement, sailing on their yacht, the Well Deserved. But when the birth of a new grandson called them back to Arizona, they put the boat up for sale. Skylar Deleon and his pregnant wife Jennifer showed up as prospective buyers, with their baby in a stroller, and the Hawkses thought they had a deal. Soon after a sea trial and an alleged purchase, however, the older couple disappeared and the Deleons promptly tried to access the Hawkses’ bank accounts. As police investigated the case, they not only found a third homicide victim with ties to Skylar, they also uncovered an unexpected and unusual motive: Skylar had wanted gender reassignment surgery for years. By killing the Hawkses with a motley crew of assailants and plundering the couple’s assets, the Deleons had planned to clear their $100,000 in debts and still have money for the surgery, which Skylar had already scheduled. Now, in this up-to-the-minute updated edition, which includes extensive new material, New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother presents the latest breaking developments in the case. Skylar, who was ultimately sentenced to death row for the three murders, transitioned to a woman via hormones while living in the psych unit at San Quentin prison. Recently, she legally changed her name and gender to female, apparently a strategic step in her quest to obtain taxpayer-subsidized gender confirmation surgery and transfer to a women’s prison. Combined with Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent moratorium on executions, this only adds insult to injury for the victims’ families, who want Skylar to receive the ultimate punishment for her crimes.

SEXUAL OBSESSIONS -- It's all good fun until someone suffocates, gets strangled or mangled. Rachel Bell joins us.
Just when you think you’ve heard it all… An entertaining and at times tongue-and-cheek look into cases of bizarre sexually obsessive behaviors (paraphilias) that had unintended consequences. Each chapter briefly explores the lesser-known fetishes and fixations to the more common ones that unexpectedly led to severe injury, imprisonment and death. Case-by-case accounts provide insight into the circumstances surrounding such infamous incidences as the deaths of INXS singer Michael Hutchence and actor David Carradine, who were believed to have accidentally died from auto-erotica asphyxiation, and the more recent Northern Virginia “Serial Butt Slasher” case, where women shopping in malls were brutally stabbed in the behind by an by a suspect identified on a mall video tape. These unusual and often disconcerting accounts seriously challenge the adage “What feels good can’t be wrong.” researcher and author Rachel Bell wrote the book and is our special guest.

Who has sex with the dead? Too many people, and roving gangs of perverted ducks. As the "victim" just lies there, do they share culpability in this foul act? Death Without Dignity -- Steve Long is our guest, and this is a shocker
The case of State of Texas vs. Autumn Hills Nursing Homes, Inc. went to trial in a borrowed San Antonio courtroom 25 years ago. It matched a Texas dream team for the defense including Roy Minton, Tom Sartwelle, Mike Ramsey, and Roy Barrera Sr. against a determined (some would say obsessed) young assistant attorney general, David Marks, and his backup team from the state. The jury heard six months of horrifying testimony about catastrophic medical failure when corporate greed trumps medical care. Death Without Dignity is their story, told by a journalist who was allowed the exceedingly rare experience of being not only in the courtroom, but was allowed by the judge to be in chambers when lawyers wrangled out of earshot of the jury – something that had never been allowed any journalist before or since, according to the lead defense lawyer. The case remains today as the longest and most expensive criminal prosecution in Texas history and Death Without Dignity is now a courtroom classic.

DIARY OF A MOTOR CITY HIT MAN -- Christian Cipollini joins Burl and the True Crime Crew for an excellent episode
A case began to unfold like nothing the quaint Detroit suburban area of Orchard Lake had ever seen. In the hours following a near head-on collision between a mysterious sedan and an on-duty patrolman, the frightening truth behind the speeding car's driver would be discovered. The vehicle was littered with weapons, drugs, and cash, yet these items weren't even the beginning. The most menacing item law enforcement could imagine was made of paper. Found in Chester Wheeler Campbell's possession was a set of meticulously detailed assassin's notebooks - containing the names of unsolved murder victims and a list of planned targets. It was a time when outlandish courtroom drama, gangland executions, corruption investigations, and scandals were all part of the twisted world where a Motor City Hit Man could thrive. This is the true tale not only of a murderer for hire, but also the parallel people and occurrences that helped warp a stressed socio-economic landscape of Detroit into a drug fueled organized crime controlled underworld.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE PIT -- MICHAEL BERISH -- UNDERCOVER VICE COP IN MIAMI WITH GREAT STORIES!
Not just another collection of rehashed police stories with shootouts, car chases, and damsels in distress, Reflections from the Pit, contains individual, quirky, off-center characters. Berish uses his intimate knowledge of "the Pit" to bring these tales alive. This book pulls no punches; it shows you the dark side of police work: the good, the bad and the ugly (warts and all), both the humor and the tragedy. Ted Bundy gets a psych evaluation from Dr Carlisle -
TED BUNDY BRUTALLY MURDERED OVER 30 WOMEN From his arrest until his execution in 1989, Ted Bundy was interviewed extensively by psychologists, journalists, and law enforcement. He offered insight into the thoughts and methods of other serial killers. It wasn't until the last few days of his life that he confessed to his crimes, which he attributed to a mysterious Entity he claimed compelled him to kill. Dr. Al Carlisle, Ph.D., evaluated Bundy for the Utah court in 1976. Ever since, Carlisle has painstakingly reconstructed Ted Bundy's history through conversations with Bundy's friends, lovers, neighbors, investigators-and through Bundy's own words. The only book of its kind, I'm Not Guilty gives a thorough analysis of the facts of Bundy's life and crimes based on Carlisle's research findings. Then, through an authoritative, speculative interview with Bundy, Carlisle enhances what is known about the origins of the Entity and Bundy's need to kill, in which we learn why a "normal child" could grow up to be a serial killer.

OPPORTUNITY, ART AND DALLAS' PSYCHEDELIC ROBOT -- BRADLY NAMDAR IS BURLS SPECIAL GUEST.
Brad Namdar thinks big with a view of America that is heartwarming. patriotic and hinges precariously on wildly inaccurate nationalistic exceptionalism . Hey, that's not uncommon. Americans are world famous for ignoring that there are other countries at least twenty years ahead of us in all manner of problem solving and social/ economic progress but Brad is such a nice guy and means so well that we can overlook that and focus instead on his positive encouraging attitude and significant personal accomplishments, plus he does one of my favorite things - he lavishes praise and appreciation on others. That trait is so wonderful, and much missing from most American culture, that it earns Brad a pass for his inaccurate statements regarding American superiority about the internet and Wi-Fi when simple fact checking reveals that when it comes to Wi-Fi access and utilization, Estonia leaves the USA in the dust Another great thing about Brad Namdar is that he appreciates being corrected, so he won't be mad at me for telling him about Estonia:-) I'm sure Brad and I will have great fun together in Texas when I come to visit.

LAST MAN STANDING -- ok he was a real jerk, but he didn't do the crime. Great book by Alan R.Warren
t was a shattering death bed confession by a heartbroken mother. But would it solve the oldest cold case murder case in American jurisprudence? In January 1994, Eileen Tessier told Jack McCullough's half-sister Janet Tessier that he, her son, kidnapped 7-year-old Maria Ridulph from their neighborhood in Sycamore, Illinois and killed her in December 1957. It was a case that tore the child’s family apart, as well as dividing and terrifying the town as the days, then the months, and finally the years passed with no arrest. In 2008 the Illinois State police reopened the case against Jack after receiving an email from Janet Tessier about their mother's deathbed confession. After the Illinois State police interviewed Janet and learned that Jack had also been accused of raping their other sister, Jeanne Tessier, they reopened the case. But would reopening the case solve the question of who killed Maria Ridulph? And was McCullough the killer? In THE LAST MAN STANDING, true crime author Alan Warren writes in exacting detail about the kidnapping, murder and subsequent investigations—both in 1957 and 2008—that eventually led to the murder conviction of Jack McCullough. But the story doesn’t stop there as it delves into the years McCullough spent in prison and the efforts to have his conviction overturned. Was McCullough the brutal killer of a little girl? Or was he the last man standing when the justice system decided he needed to pay for the crime? You decide.

Travis Webb. famed Rave producer, comic book creator and journalist TOO MUCH TALENT
Burl Barer says: Most of my true crime books contain insights and commentary by Travis Webb who gets full credit for bringing the murders covered in my book HEAD SHOT to my attention. In a recent Q&A for Wild Blue Press's re-release of HEADLOCK, my private eye novel, I was asked: is Travis Webb the same Travis Webb who is a famous rave producer and pop culture icon in the Northwest? A: Yes, but the Travis Webb in HEADLOCK is the Travis I knew almost 20 years ago when he wasn’t famous, wasn’t really handsome (he is now), and was much heavier. Travis says he reads the novel to remind himself of what his life was like back then. He is very smart, and probably even smarter than he appears in the book. We had Travis on our show almost ten years ago, and it is the perfect time to have him back as he is featured in a new documentary on the rave culture in the Northwest -- a documentary made several years ago when Travis was ruling the Rave scene in Seattle

Cyber Stalking just about drove Susan Fensten out of her mind!
"Susan Fensten's new book, You Have a Very Soft Voice, Susan, is a pulse-pounding work that proves once again that truth is stranger than fiction." --Kevin M. Sullivan, author of The Bundy Murders and Vampire: The Richard Chase Murders "You Have a Very Soft Voice, Susan is quite possibly the most twisted and surreal case of stalking I have ever encountered. Well written and gripping. Just when you think it can't get any more bizarre, it does." --Patrick Quinlan, Los Angeles Times bestselling author of All Those Moments "A harrowing and visceral read. Fensten takes you straight into the heart of darkness in her debut book. A must-have for true crime readers everywhere." --Jesse P. Pollack, author of The Acid King "Susan Fensten's autobiographical account of how her simple internet search for lost relatives on an ancestry website unleashed a horrifying armada of mad kinky ghouls to relentlessly stalk her, is a fright house of a tale; a Dantesque decent into a cyber inferno that any one of us could easily find themselves drawn into." --Peter Vronsky, author of Sons of Cain: A History of Serial Killers From the Stone Age to the Present

A "Family" Business == Award winning author Dennis Griffin, famous for his "mob books" is back with a new book and great stories
Joe Silvestri was a tough kid from the mean streets of New York. He went from street brawler to wearing a tux at the glamorous Copacabana. He eventually provided “muscle” for the Mob, a highly respected and feared fixer—the guy you went to if you had a problem that needed to be resolved. He followed Mob protocol when having a sit down with an adversary: You never break bread with the enemy. Award-winning Mob author Dennis Griffin joins forces with Joey “the Fixer” Silvestri to tell a tale of a bygone era when organized crime dominated New York City. It was a time when neighborhood bosses controlled their turf and some cops would look the other way for the right price. Your best friend one day might want you dead the next. It was a violent life in which only the strong survived. Dennis was one of our first guests ten years ago when we started this show, and it is always a delight to have him back. THE DARKEST NIGHT: Ron Franscell . Classic episode!
This was Ron's first visit to the show, and he is so compelling in his storytelling, you will understand why we always love having him on the program. Casper, Wyoming:1973. Eleven-year-old Amy Burridge rides with her eighteen-year-old sister, Becky, to the grocery store. When they finish their shopping, Becky’s car gets a flat tire. Two men politely offer them a ride home. But they were anything but Good Samaritans. The girls would suffer unspeakable crimes at the hands of these men before being thrown from a bridge into the North Platte River. One miraculously survived. The other did not. Years later, author and journalist Ron Franscell—who lived in Casper at the time of the crime, and was a friend to Amy and Becky—can’t forget Wyoming’s most shocking story of abduction, rape, and murder. Neither could Becky, the surviving sister. The two men who violated her and Amy were sentenced to life in prison, but the demons of her past kept haunting Becky…until she met her fate years later at the same bridge where she’d lost her sister.

LUST MURDERS -- All Murders are bad. Some motives are worse.
The lust murderers examined by Janet McClellan include Theodore Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Dennis Rader. The book proposes the need for a composite typology technique in order to have a more promising approach in identifying a suspect pool from a broader range of psychosocial, offense activities, and particular offender characteristics to aid in investigations. The study advocates that a primary function of the development of typologies is to provide aid and assistance in the investigation of violent crime, specifically violent sexualized homicides. As such, this book presents a comprehensive series of issue discussions linking specific issues, activities, processes, and operational contexts in general homicide investigation and specifically for lust murder investigation.

IMPOSSIBLE ODDS -- Anthony Flacco
The harrowing and heart-wrenching memoir of humanitarian aid worker Jessica Buchanan's kidnapping by Somali land pirates, her three months in captivity, her rescue by the Navy SEALs, and her husband's extraordinary efforts to help bring her home. In 2006, 27-year-old Jessica Buchanan arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, with a teaching degree and long-held dreams of helping to educate African children. By 2009, she had met and married the man of her dreams, a native Swede named Erik Landemalm, who worked to coordinate humanitarian aid with local authorities in Africa. With dreams of starting a family, they moved from Nairobi to Somalia, and their future couldn't have seemed brighter.... But on October 25, 2011, Jessica and a male colleague were kidnapped at gunpoint and held for ransom by an organized band of Somali land pirates. For the next three months, Jessica was terrorized by more than two dozen gangsters. She was held outdoors in filthy conditions and kept on a starvation diet while her health steadily deteriorated. Negotiations for ransom dragged on, and as the ordeal stretched into its third month, the captors grew increasingly impatient. Every terrifying moment Jessica spent suffering in captivity was matched by that of her adoring husband working behind the scenes to deal with her captors. Finally, on January 25, 2012, President Barack Obama ordered a rescue operation by a team of 24 Navy SEALs. The team killed all nine kidnappers, with no harm to the hostages, who were quickly airlifted out on a military rescue helicopter. In riveting detail, Impossible Odds details Jessica and Erik's mutual journey during those torturous months. Together they relate the events prior to the kidnapping, the drama of Jessica's fight to stay alive, and Erik's efforts to bolster and support the hunt for her while he acted as liaison between their two families, the FBI, professional hostage negotiators, and the United States government.

25 years with CNN -- John DeDakis Double Play!
John DeDakis required two episodes to give him the time he deserved -- so here are part one and part two (two weeks apart back in 2016) of our conversations with the brilliant journalist John DeDakis Since 1969, I've been a just-the-facts-ma'am journalist working in radio and television newsrooms in Wisconsin, Germany, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Highlights of my career include getting tear gassed while covering the anti-Vietnam War riots in 1970 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; doing a 40-minute, one-on-one radio interview with Alfred Hitchcock in 1973 during my stint in the Army at the American Forces Network (AFN)-Europe; and covering the White House for CBN News during the last three years of Ronald Reagan's presidency. In 1988, I joined CNN as a writer. From 2001 to 2005, I supervised the writing on "Daybreak" anchored by Carol Costello. From 2005 to 2013, I was a Senior Copy Editor on "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." In March of 2013 I retired from CNN after 25 years with the network. I now write full time. I grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin and earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1977). The name DeDakis first appeared in the Chicago phone book about 1915 as a typographical error. My grandfather, who had just immigrated from Greece, felt the accidental capitalization of the second D made the name look more "dignified" so, Dedakis became DeDakis. It's pronounced dih-DAY-kiss, by the way. Mr. DeDakis, being shy, didn't mention the highlight of his media life is appearing on True Crime Uncensored on Outlaw Radio with fellow old school journalists Burl Barer and Howard Lapides
