12. Equal Pay Day 2022
12. Equal Pay Day 2022
The Fawcett Society announced that 20 November 2022 was Equal Pay Day this year – but it is not a day to celebrate. From this day to the end of the year, women are, on average, working for free because of the ongoing gender pay gap. A stark fact particularly given the cost of living crisis and impending recession. In our latest podcast, Helen Dallimore from byrne·dean speaks with Sarah Lyons and Hannah Bradshaw of BlueSky about why we are still here, the wider impact of the gender pay gap and wealth inequality and the positive steps we can take to challenge and address this in our workplaces. They share their experiences and insights as employment lawyers, mothers and DEI experts. Sarah and Hannah also bring their wealth of knowledge from their roles as executive coaches who create sustainable change and ensure female talent is retained and thrives in law firms.  As they highlight, tackling these issues will not only benefit women; it benefits everyone – businesses, the economy and society as a whole.

Two very different perspectives. One very interesting conversation. Join Graham Browning and Julie Morris from our Resolution team as they share candid insights into how workplace complaints are handled in the real world. Members of our Resolution team combining 40 years+ experience, Julie and Graham come from opposing perspectives. Except when coaching, Graham’s varied career has always been within global organisations (in-house lawyer, HR and ER). When Julie isn’t investigating for byrne·dean, she continues to represent individuals with concerns about work. Whether you work for organisations, individuals or wonder how best to raise a concern, this is a podcast you won’t want to miss.

5. International Day of People with Disabilities
5. International Day of People with Disabilities
3 December is International Day of People with Disabilities. The theme for 2021 is “Fighting for rights in the post-COVID era” and it is about acknowledging the challenges, barriers and opportunities for people who live with disabilities in the context of a global pandemic.  While everyone on earth has been impacted by COVID, people living with disabilities have been among the most affected populations. In this podcast, Helen Dallimore talks with Sharon Foxwell, a friend and working parent carer who writes a blog on her life as a parent with a daughter with a severe learning disability and drug resistant epilepsy. During the conversation, Sharon shares the impact of the pandemic on her life at home and work and what work means to her. They also consider how leaders can engage with employees living with disabilities, such as parent carers, to support them with the challenges, recognise the potential opportunities and help create kinder, fairer and more productive workplaces.  The discussion references a recent report on flexible working by @FlexAppeal working with Sir Robert McAlpine which is available in full here (Forever Flex report) and government guidance on inclusive language to consider using when talking about disability which is available here.

2. Somewhere over the rainbow - a Pride podcast
2. Somewhere over the rainbow - a Pride podcast
As Pride season comes to a close, in this frank and inspiring podcast Richard Thompson and Mark O'Grady reflect on what Pride month means to them and the impact of Pride tokenism or ‘Pinkwashing’. How does it feel for two out and proud gay men when rainbow coloured logos, products and messaging appear pretty much everywhere in June only to disappear again for the rest of the year? It’s hard not to be skeptical about the authenticity of the sentiment. However, it does keep the conversation moving and hopefully acts as a catalyst for real change. Find out more from Mark and Richard’s podcast about what you can do to create a sustained win-win: championing your LGBTQ+ employees; becoming stronger allies; committing to Pride-related inclusion all year round - over the rainbow.  Photo by Steve Johnson on Unsplash
