Ep 91 - Hadestown (w/ Lindsey Anton-Wood)

On the railroad line on the road to Hell there was a radio-station,
And there were two young women chattering away
And everybody heard and everybody saw
BYWAP! podcastin' again.

It's an old song, it's an old tale. But we sing it anyway.
Today Stephanie is joined by BYWAP's very own Lindsey as we take on Broadway and indulgently bring you the BYWAP take on Hadestown: The Musical by Anais Mitchell.

Join us as Lindsey and Stephanie bring a new level of unhinged to the podcast, contemplate how Greek myths are retold for modern audiences, lament over how good Broadway shows are, and come together over accepting that "His Kiss, the Riot" is the best villain song in the breadth of this lyrical masterpiece.

Ep 90 - The Ghent Altarpiece

Episode 90? Good lord.

You know her, you love her, and today we finally talk about: The Ghent Altarpiece, or The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This magnificent masterwork is not only Jan Van Eyck's most prolific work of art, but also the world's most steal-able altarpiece. This was such a great episode to make, just wait until your hosts record in front of her live. Check out our website for all the Art Conservation related links that we talked about in this episode! Join us as we worship the horrific man-face of the lamb of God, discuss the numerology in relation to the Divine, bemoan the treatment of this centuries old painting, and ponder just how magical it would be to stumble into a decommissioned salt mines and found all of these magnificent European masterpieces. Ep 89 - Bélizaire and the Frey Children

It's Article Discussion Time! On August 14th, 2023, the New York Times published 'His Name Was Bélizaire': Rare Portrait of Enslaved Child Arrives at the Met. In the month since, there has been a flurry of information and media attention because just how rare this acquisition is. Elene and Steph help break down just how the acquisition came to be where it is now: hanging in the prestigious halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Join us as we struggle with reading comprehension, fangirl about the magic that is art conservation, shake your fist at the New Orleans Museum of Art for the arrogance of bad collection management, and genuinely

Ep 88 - The Life & Art of Andy Warhol

Ep 88 - The Life & Art of Andy Warhol

That's right folks, it's time to talk about the artist we all love and hate and love to hate! Andy Warhol is a character from a book he wrote about himself, an enigma who's human but also is not but also is? Your hosts have a hard time making up our minds about this Marketer Turned Artist and we express those thoughts very loudly and brashly, as you would expect from us.

So join us as we talk about his best times and his worst times, his prints and his plagiarism, and most of all, the role he played to shape the capitalist art world hellscape that we live in now.

Ep 87 - The National Endowment for the Arts

We live in a society where things cost money, and taxes must be paid. It is also clear that the world of funding in cultural heritage is a complex maze of permissions and allowances, offset by private and public funding to operate. As you can imagine, BYWAP is very pro "Not-Starving Artist."

Enter: Funding.

Join us as Steph forgets to call it the National Endowment FOR the Arts (despite dedicating two years of scholarship to this institution), talk about Georgian Piracy, contemplate all the best ways to commit crimes to make money, and get really heated about how governments spend tax dollars.

Ep 86 - An Introduction to (Italian) Baroque Art

Bet You Wish This Was An Art Podcast is back and better than ever! Did you miss us? We missed you! More importantly we missed Baroque Art. Head back into the 16th century, where we explore the very influential Italian art movement in the 16th century. We’re unhinged in this episode, and you’re welcome.

Join us as we wish to go searching for our imperfect pearls, contemplate how Vatican Propaganda responds to a strongly worded thesis, obsess over Keeping Up With The Catholics, and enjoy as we exalt the heavens with oval ceilings and tenebrism! If it ain't baroque, don't fix it!

Ep 85 - What is a Ziggurat?

Ep 85 - What is a Ziggurat?

We did a whole episode on this topic, and I still don’t believe it’s spelt that way when I read “Ziggurat”. But, like many words that look weird after reading it so many times, today we are back in our fascination wheelhouse of temple-complexes and ancient civilizations. Follow BYWAP as we travel back in time to investigate the Ziggurat as a religious center for Mesopotamian cities… And the global influence it may very well possess! Join us as we yell into the void over the importance of Big Rivers, manage to fill our “We Hate Alexander the Great” quota, contemplate the trading significance of an empire with so many trade routes, FINALLY record the episode, and settle into Halloween Month the best way we know how… Ancient Civilizations.

Ep 84 : Oceans 8 (Movie Night!)

Ep 84 : Oceans 8 (Movie Night!)

What a delightfully ridiculous movie - the plot is spotty, but the laughs are real. Today your BYWAP favorites are conquering the 2018 trainwreck that was Ocean’s 8. A starcast of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, ANNE HATHAWAY, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham Carter could not rescue Gary Ross’ film, but God bless ‘em. Will Debbie Ocean pull off the greatest heist of her life? Will she make her character relevant with her impossible group of hyper-talented thieves? Of course! We don’t have friends, we have family!... Oh, wait, sorry, wrong movie. Join us as we girlboss-gatekeep-gaslight our way to millions of dollars, critique Met Gala fashion, realize that all it takes to steal priceless art is to speak flawless french, and conspire that Danny Ocean is actually not dead.

Ep 83 - Caravaggio: Wanted Dead or Alive

Ep 83 - Caravaggio: Wanted Dead or Alive

Guess who’s back? Back again. With all the power of life, love, and drama, we cannot stay away from talking about our spicy favorites… And Caravaggio is the epitome of the sunglasses emoji. The 16th century bad boy of your art history class, queer influencer Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is the Baroque Italian painter who spurred controversy and loyal followers. His work is exquisite, his capability for murder is strong. Cringe aside, this artist lived a wild life. We’re unhinged in this episode, and you’re welcome.

Join us as we wish to go drinking with Caravaggio, contemplate how a bunch of Maltan monks could possibly stand to be around this temper-tantrum baby, obsess over the fear of being beheaded by making a ton of art around beheadings, and enjoy as we become a True Crime podcast to discuss the mysterious death and disappearance of Caravaggio’s body!

Ep 82 - An Introduction to DADA

Ep 82 - An Introduction to DADA

Scream into the void! We’re back, baybee. Vacation was lovely, Elene is in a great way, Steph needs sleep. Delirious and over-caffeinated, we are in the proper headspace to try and learn you about Dada. Will we be successful? Probably not! Join BYWAP for this picnic of lucid dreaming and furry teacups. We’ll automatic writing our way to success, and talk about Marcel Duchamp a lot. Find out how Dada came to be in 20th century Paris; contemplate quietly the art that you could create if you did a lot of deep breathing, randomly rubbed graphite on random pieces of paper, and scream; and, remain unsurprised that anarchists and communists co-signed their beliefs into an art style that had no gods nor kings.

Ep 81 - Taj Mahal: A Legacy of Love

Ep 81 - Taj Mahal: A Legacy of Love

What a life, what a joy. We are back in our sweet spot, where UNESCO World Heritage sites find themselves back in our limelight, and we can talk about architecture. And, not only architecture, but also a love story that has inspired generations for centuries, though there might be more to the story than we’re usually told. Today, your favorite BYWAP hosts talk about one of the seven Wonders of the World—the Taj Mahal. Join us as we demand for a healthy respect for the dead, make really bad MTV “Cribz” jokes, gossip about the lives of rich people, and wish that there was an Obsidian Taj Mahal.

Ep 80 - The Sunken Treasures of Ancient Egypt

Ep 80 - The Sunken Treasures of Ancient Egypt

It’s like Atlantis, but better! Today we tell the story of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus — two lost cities at the mouth of the Nile, swallowed completely by the sea by the 8th century AD. As we continue the last of our Summer Extravaganza, Stephanie teaches Elene about the remarkable story and legacy of ancient cities that only recently saw the light of day… But that contributes to our larger understanding of Ancient Egypt. Join us as we tell the story of Osiris, get mad as we discuss the French, learn so much about culture and religion from some stele, and contemplate how we get into the field of Marine Archeology without having to go back for another Masters degree.

Ep 79 - Crime of the Century: The John Forgeries

What if your technical abilities as an artist were so good, you could bamboozle art markets and curators? What does it take? How do you get into it? Just… Asking for a friend, of course! Anyways, as a part of our summer extravaganza today Elene teaches Stephanie about the Johns—John Drewe and John Myatt, to be exact. This modern story is fun, bite-sized, and full of intense art historical implications. Join us as we follow an extravagant narrative from our favorite BYWAP host, get mad about what is within the purview of fake physics professors, contemplate the lingering effects of the Myatt art market, and enjoy this episode with a summery refreshment!

Ep 78 - Big Eyes (Movie Night!)

To all the wives out there: if your husband takes credit for your work, leave! BYWAP is back with a movie night adventure. We’ve taken a small break from our Night at the Museum binge to watch this 2014 gem: Big Eyes. Shockingly, neither Helena Bonham Carter nor Johnny Depp are in this Tim Burton vehicle, but Amy Adams and Christopher Waltz do an amazing job conveying the TRUE STORY of Margaret and Walter Keane.

Join us as we fantasize about running away to Hawaii, watch in horror as art forgeries get bought and sold with reckless abandon, celebrate when the truth is finally revealed, have a paint-off in court, and wish that this movie was two hours shorter than what it actually was.

Ep 77 - Modernity and the Spaces of Femininity

Ep 77 - Modernity and the Spaces of Femininity

We’re back in Paris, mes amis! Grab your walking sticks and top hats, and join us on this stroll through the evolving Modern Art Scene as a passive observer of the world…! Unless, of course, you’re a woman. In which case, we regret to inform you that there is no art historically equivalent word for feminine casual street voyeur. We can offer “girlfriend/wife” of male counterpart, or sex worker? However, if those do not appeal to you this day, we have some cozier, homebound options for you! Yes, no, these still apply even if you’re a “woman artist” as well. If you have any questions about your lot in life, please refer to Griselda Pollock’s chapter “Modernity and the Spaces of Femininity.” Thank you!

Join us as we investigate art spaces and feminine places, marvel at how bizarrely attached people become to the presumed nature of gendered language, get really excited about our new favorite author, and quandary over how the “virgin” and the “harlot” will forever be at the heart of discussing a woman’s role in life.

Ep 76 - SAMO IS DEAD: Long Live Basquiat

Ep 76 - SAMO IS DEAD: Long Live Basquiat

There are no words to describe how important New York was to the 80’s Art Scene. Not only did you have money and culture, but everyone seemed to be caught up in a movement of raw, expressive, heavily commercial creation. And it’s in this scene where we find today’s artist, New York’s very own: Jean-Michel Basquiat. And this ain’t your SAMO, SAMO. We mourn the man we lost, and wish that someone could have looked at him like a human-being in need of a friend and not a factory capable of printing masterpieces.
Join us as we contemplate the double-edged sword of success, become acutely interested in joining the punk movement through spray painting, offer unaccredited medical advice to a boy who lived too fast and died too young, and briefly live in a world where offering a postcard to Andy Warhol could change your life.

Ep 75 - What is a Pyramid?

Ep 75 - What is a Pyramid?

What's got four walls, wasn't built by aliens, and has been a fascination for centuries longer than we can even perceive time? That's right: Pyramids! This is largely a Giza/ancient Egypt focused episode, but the world of Pyramids is so much larger than we can even begin to theorize.

Join us as we investigate the generational wealth necessary to maintain a Pyramid Scheme, enjoy knowing that the stars helped build these lasting monuments, be perplexed that Earth, Wind, and Fire probably have the best understanding of Egyptian aesthetics, and get into a philosophical debate on how much labor was was paid/unpaid for this public works project.

Ep 74 - Let's Steal the Crown Jewels!

Sometimes, folks, we come out with some interesting stories. Long time listeners of the podcast will know that your BYWAP hosts love some art thievery, and today's episode is no exception. Although! Very uniquely! Today's episode has Stephanie telling Elene a story she's never heard about. Long live the King!

Join us as we contemplate the complexities of European history, learn some fun art history words like "defenestration", re-write all of the conveniences, and con the friends we made along the way.

Ep 73 - Night at the Museum 2 (Movie Night!)

Mama mia, here we go again. As our illustrious audio witch has framed it, this episode sounds like ADHD feels. We never have high hopes for sequels, but let’s just say that this movie was a fever dream. We cannot believe we have to watch a third movie. Join us as we try to send ancient Egyptians back to hell, get angry as the misidentification of monkeys and Smithsonian museums becomes a plot point of the episode, sing “Love Bug” when the Jonas Brothers makes a cameo, and be baffled by the very boring and very horny approach they’ve taken with Amelia Earhart.

Ep 72 - The Role of Photography in Archives

For those of you who head the call of the Archives: this episode is for you. We’ve got archive fever, y’all! Your favorite BYWAP hosts are pulling out all the stops with today's Article Discussion as we dive deeply into a love letter to the hallowed halls of stored memories. Archives, especially photographs as both archival material and The Archive, have a lot to teach us about what we see, how we feel, and why we remember.  Join us as we wax poetically about boxes full of pictures, argue about the meaning of long-dead philosophers, and celebrate art in all its documentable forms.

Ep 71 - Claude Monet and His Gardens

Give me a "G!" Give me a "ver-nee!" Say it with me folks: Giverny! Your favorite BYWAP hosts get Romantic:tm: and Wistful:tm: as they think about the idyllic French countryside, and how we wish more than anything to cozy up on a picnic together and paint impressionistic landscapes. Our gloomy host Claude Monet sits alongside us, working on six hundred canvases at once because the light keeps changing. Honestly, this is such a peaceful episode if you can look past ALL of our French pronunciation. We really do try... We promise.

Join us as we cry over the summer holiday we crave to be on, get excited over Claude Monet being a speed demon, bash on The Royal French Salon, and we sing the legacy of a salty old painter and his pursuit of capturing the essence of water lilies. It's a love story, folks, if you know where to look.

Ep 70 - The French Art Academy: History and Controversy

Ep 70 - The French Art Academy: History and Controversy

Let the spicy topics continue! Many of us are introduced to the concept of "The French Academy" when we begin studying art and art history, but what actually is it? Was it just a building that people could go and study at, or did it transcend a physical space and become a highly influential cultural representative?  Follow your favorite BYWAP hosts as we take a sojourn to France and take a critical look into the history and controversies of such a lasting monolith.

Join us as we butcher the French language, get surprisingly heated over the Hierarchy of Painting, make apt 21st century connections to their 17th century historical counterparts, and remind folks that the last thing you need to worry about is what some dumb art school tells you is art versus not art.

Ep 69 - Frank Lloyd Wright

Ep 69 - Frank Lloyd Wright

Listen, we couldn't plan for this level of coincidence if we tried. Episode 69 and Frank Lloyd Wright? It's almost too gauche, even for us. But, then again, we did accidentally record this particular episode on his birthday... So, maybe we did know?? (We didn't. I'm obsessed). Architecture is our bread and butter, and this self-proclaimed greatest architect of all-time is our sworn enemy.

Join us as we investigate Frank Lloyd Wright's obsession with mystics and Welsh magicians, get personally offended that an architect built an entire career around leaky roofs and he's still considered great(!!!), keep a running list on how easy it was to just abandon your family, and listen to Stephanie get ideas for when she starts her own commune/cult in Arizona.

Ep 68 - Goya’s Ghosts (Movie Night!)

Ep 68 - Goya’s Ghosts (Movie Night!)

It’s that time of rotations where Elene and Stephanie have movie night! Most times we just curl up around a nice film, pop some popcorn, and enjoy some mindless fun. Other times, we suffer through a too-long, unnecessarily tragic film that depicts torture and suffering. Steph loved it, Elene was over it before it even began. Join us as we suffer through one of the bloodiest times in Spanish history, contemplate how little it would take to get ourselves arrested by the Inquisition, make a minimum of six Monty Python and listen to us suffer so you do not have to watch this bizarre film.

Ep 67 - Vanishing Points: Artists Against AIDS

Ep 67 - Vanishing Points: Artists Against AIDS

Read our lips: Kissing Doesn't Kill. Greed and Indifference Do.

We here at BYWAP have thought long and hard about how we wanted to celebrate PRIDE on our podcast. As two queer women, we acknowledge the celebration and trauma that comes from LGBTQI+ legacy. The first Pride was a riot, and this will be no different. In a joyful, tearful recounting of today's article, we implore you to take stock of how far we have come as a community, and how far we still have to go. Don't let June be the only month you embrace queer history. Learn the artists, say their names. Get Keith Haring tattooed on your arm, hang cut-outs of Robert Mapplethorpe on your wall, cry with Aziz + Cucher as they navigated the miracle of medical advancement, and make art to remember the loss of your loved ones like David Wojnarowicz.

Remember, this isn't 'gay as in happy', this is 'queer as in no cops at PRIDE.' Our article for today is Vanishing Points: Art, AIDS, and the Problem of Visibility from Richard Meyer's book Outlaw Representation: Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art (2002)

Join us as we investigate the cultural climate of the American AIDS epidemic, denounce artistic censorship, listen to Stephanie nearly cry several times, ACT UP as we add our voices to the chants of Silence=Violence, and offer sympathetic hearts to the work and life of artists like David Wojnarowicz.

Ep 66 - MONA: A Museum Or Something

Sometimes we talk about some of the most interesting artists. And sometimes we discuss captivating architecture. But today, my friends, we’re doing something... Different. We’re looking at both of these things as if we didn’t care about these things. And, doubly so, we’re going to do our first museum deep dive! Join us as we talk about the Museum of Old and New Art! Join us as we discuss the unique experience of rating art in terms of “love” or “hate”, contemplate betting on horse races to get rich quick, listen to Elene be horrified at the idea of a man’s job being living artwork, and celebrate accessible art to local communities.

Attention, dear listeners! Today’s episode is going to be a wild one. And not wild, per say, because we’re covering scandal... but because this one hits very close to home. And the format is new, too! Today Elene teaches Stephanie about Georgian artist and Sad Boy, Shalva Kikodze. Join us as we follow a man in search of a country, continue to romanticize about running away to Paris to become great artists, phonics our way through the pronunciation of Tbilisi, and learn so much more about or favorite Georgian co-host!

Ep 64 - Angkor Wat

Ep 64 - Angkor Wat

It’s a holiday in Cambodia, and the star of today’s show is the world’s largest religious structure—Angkor Wat. This once-Hindu-later-Buddhist-and-also-mausoleum temple houses this history of the Khmer empire and legacy of European imperialism. It’s not perfect, but it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site... So, what can ya do?

Join us as we contemplate starting our own rice kingdom, enthuse about STEM like it’s Witchcraft, and reaffirm our favorite talking points about medieval civilizations. Just because it’s not Europe, doesn’t mean it’s “primitive”!

Ep 62 - What is Abstract Expressionism?

Ep 62 - What is Abstract Expressionism?

From Rothko to Pollock, the forms and shapes of abstract expressionism are known instantly. This post-WWII art movement has defined a corner stone of the Modern art movement and decorates wall-upon-wall of gallery space in museums... But what is it? Where did it come from? Where did it go? Like all good things, the art evolves throughout it's time and your favorite BYWAP hosts are here to guide you through this rich, colorful darkness. Don't worry, it'll make sense when we make it to the other side.

Join us as we yell about the Cold War, roll our eyes at artists nursing blossoming God complexes as they explain their art, get heated over the influence of Peggy Guggenheim, and return attention to some of the coolest women artists we've covered in this podcast.

Today, your favorite hosts dive deep into the illustrious story of Sonya Clark and investigate cultural identity. Join us as we continue to unravel the Black American narrative, one confederate flag at a time; contemplate the many thousands of combs that make up some Sonya Clark installations; beg your hosts to stop with the musical segways; and, delight in how cool it would be to have Sonya Clark as a professor.

Ep 60 - Benin Bronzes: History as Loot

Have you heard the good news? The Benin Bronzes are to be repatriated! Oh, what a wonderful time to be a part of the cultural heritage scene! Whilst the United Kingdom and commonwealth nations mourn the loss of the Queen’s Consort Prince Philip, the wheels of change and progress are seeing restitution and justice be enacted on these national treasures. What are these Benin Bronzes? Why do they matter? We’ve got you.

Join us as we dive deep into the history of the bronzes, celebrate a ‘monumental’ victory in the world of looted goods, and contemplate the fate of so many other spoils of war (and colonialism).

But, more importantly, we're talking about the Royal Alcazar Palace and Gardens and the legacy of 700 years of Islamic art on Spanish culture with an article discussion. This World Heritage Site, palace of Spain’s royal family, and done in the Mudéjar architectural style, will play the backdrop of today’s episode. So, sit back. We’ll enjoy the soft splashing of fountains, as we sit in the cool shade of the patio, and get ready for our article discussions of Hispano-Arab gardens. Our two articles for today: The Hispano-Arab Garden: Its Philosophy and Function by James Dickie (1968) and Primero Huerto: Iconography, Anamorphism, and the Idea of the Garden in Sixteenth-Century Spanish Mysticism by María M. Carrión (2012).

Join us as we make a ton of Game of Thrones references, wax poetically about flowers, get defensive of scholarly literature written in the 15th century, and contemplate the legacy of Islam on the Spanish diaspora.

Ep 58 - Black Art: In the Absence of Light (Movie Night!)

Ep 58 - Black Art: In the Absence of Light (Movie Night!)

Honestly, this is probably one of the best documentaries either of us have ever watched and it's worth watching many times. Built around the legacy of David Driskell (renowned professor, artist, and curator) and his revolutionary exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art (1976) this HBO documentary opens audiences to the beauty and reality of what it means to be a Black American Artist

Join us as we define a Black Aesthetic, contemplate the power of collecting as advocacy, confronting Otherness & Fear in art, and bemoan the absolute lack of Black-centric exhibitions created by black curators.

Ep 57 - Art World Shenanigans II: COVID-19 Updates (w/ Silvija Burbaitė)

Steph is coming to you live, right now, with the first of two COVID vaccines in her arm. Better still! We have Silvija back on the podcast a year after our first COVID-19 update for our second Art World Shenanigan's episode! To no one's surprise... It's still kinda bad. And that's not even an April Fool's Day joke! But, we're here. And we're queer. And we enjoy a beer in this "relaxed-fit" style recap episode of what the past twelve months have meant to us. It's all Chaotic, all the time.

Join us for some wholesome friendship, COVID-19 discussions, bad Suez Canal jokes, 2020 mentions, and the hangups of colonization.

Ep 56 - Motherhood in West African Art

Oh, folks. What an episode. It took your favorite hosts 3+ attempts to actually come out with an episode this week, because we kept getting tripped up over the subject, the content, the execution... You get the picture. We really liked how today's discussion on the depiction of Motherhood in West African Art turned out, but it took us a long time to get it to here.

Join us as we yell about things we care about, derail this thought train by getting lost in the weeds on who gets to decide what is Art and what is Artifact, discuss if the sources used for today's episode were the correct sources, and watch two Art History Students with a deep passion for equity and representation struggle in real time. We need more exhibitions.

Ep 55 - Ruth Asawa: Inside Out

Ep 55 - Ruth Asawa: Inside Out

Oh boy, dear listener. Silence is violence, and the patterns of racial violence that predicate the notion of Asian Americans as "not belonging" directly ties to US history. Look no further than today's artist, Ruth Asawa, who was forcibly detained in a WWII Japanese Internment camp on US soil. This American sculptor took her lifelong passion for art and her outstanding resilience, and radically transformed wire-crocheting baskets into something extraordinary and bizarre. After all, it was Ruth herself who said, "I would not be who I am today had it not been for the internment, and I like who I am."

Join us as we discuss the atrocities of racism, gush about the Black Mountain College, celebrate the concept of true love, and make a ton of noise around the fact that her arts education space inspires both of your BYWAP hosts to start a school together.

Ep 54 - Thin Lines: An Introduction to Printmaking

Ep 54 - Thin Lines: An Introduction to Printmaking

Let's start at the very beginning, it's a very good place to start. To talk about printmaking, we must return to the humble beginnings. After all, we live in an era (we live in a society!) where access to paper and printing is commonplace. We here at BYWAP invite you to join us for a fun dive through all the ways artists have mastered and manipulated ink on paper!

Join us as we marvel at industrialization and the printing press; express outward concern and horror for all the ways artists use dangerous substances to make pretty art; scream about the many, many, many, many, many, MANY lines it takes to make prints; and, take refuge in the knowledge that we mad respect these crazy printmaking cats because they make collecting art a lot cheaper—Accessibility is good!

Ep 53 - Petra: Cities and Secrets

Ep 53 - Petra: Cities and Secrets

This goes out to you and yours: BYWAP talks ancient desert architecture. Like all good things, this pre-historic Jordinian city of vibrant, carved sandstone was 'lost' to the Western world for hundreds of years. Petra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and, since then, this mysterious city has slowly unveiled its secrets to us. Sadly, there will be no Holy Grail or Ancient Knight found here... Unless!

Join us as we marvel at the deeply human ability to divert water and earth to create civilization in places where people probably shouldn't live, gasp audibly when we turn the corner and the Treasury creeps into view, yell about the Indiana Jones franchise, and load our guns so we can shoot at carved architectural features for Treasure (pronounced TrAY-shure).

Ep 52 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Movie Night!)

Ep 52 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Movie Night!)

Are portraits art? Portraiture is an old tradition, going back to at least ancient Egypt where it has flourished for the past 5,000 years. This week, however, BYWAP is all wrapped up in the historical romantic drama of Celine Sciamma's brilliant Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019). Not only was this movie specifically made for us, but it also opened up a whole conversation about portraits.

Join us as we contemplate between running away to French islands, cry over the power of music in film, break down the philosophy of portraits, and thrill in Queer Delight over two equals falling in love. Stephanie has seen it at least three times, y'all.

Ep 51 - Obelisks & Indigenous Lands

Yes, we’re late to the cultural heritage memory party. Yes, time is a concept we can barely conceptualize. Yes, we have found more Monoliths. But! We’re better for having waited. The Metal Monolith of Utah still has some story to tell. Join us as we stay safe from this climate change nightmare by talking about land rights and Land Art, stand behind the preservation of monuments, get emotional over grassroots organizations taking back what’s rightfully there’s, and remain annoyed at this bizarre art scandal that so many others are willing to forget about.

Ep 50 - Artemisia Gentileschi

Ep 50 - Artemisia Gentileschi

The sun has not shown in three days, Steph is still dying of the plague, the global economy is unstably controlled by a small ruling class. In many ways, today is a perfect day to talk about Italian Baroque queen: Artemisia Gentileschi. Thanks to (extremely) recent art historical focus shifts, names like Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, and Artemisia Gentileschi are recognized in the Art History Canon as talented and remarkable artists. Artemisia, in her own right, possess a timelessness that makes her art so approachable now as it was back in the 17th century (gotta love #WomenWhoKill). But, this wasn't always the case.

Join us as we investigate the life of the Gentileschi's, yell into the void about how art history ignored women artists for nearly forever, get gore-y about descriptions of Judith slaying Holofernes, and remain amazed that this podcast has officially made it to 50 episodes.

Ep 49 - Fertility Goddesses

Ep 49 - Fertility Goddesses

Happy February, someone let me off this ride. A lot of smart people have argued that prehistoric human societies were more matrifocal, more cooperative, and less violent. These same smart people also theorize that many (if not most) primitive societies featured a religion based around ideas of fertility and motherhood. While y’all may are not be here for gendered interpretations of what defines fertility, sex, pregnancy, childbirth, and crops, we here at BYWAP can assure you that this is one hell of a goddess roundup.

Join us as we celebrate our queen, The Venus of Willendorf; yell about gender, and gendered language, and the limits of academic creativity for naming; stare in awe and terror at half of these hot girls who do hot shit; and appreciate the line “clearly depicted sexual attributes suggest that they are a direct or indirect expression of fertility” from archeologist Nicholas Conrad, who we dunk on for nearly this whole episode.

Ep 48 - What is Art Nouveau?

Art is for Elves. Art Deco is for Dwarves. It really is that simple. Once called ‘the Modern Style’, Art Nouveau lived a hot and heavy moment before bowing down in the face of Modern Architecture. A pity, but a revival period is what we live for.

Join us as we talk about the feelings that squiggly lines make us feel, argue the word choices Stephanie makes, get really passionate about French architecture, and make travel plans you can’t act upon for another two years.

Ep 47 - A Story in Drag (w/ Martyr!)

Happy birthday to our favorite Queen, Brooklyn's own Martyr (spelled like Martyr, pronounced like you're stupid), the fabulous co-host of Wigging Out podcast. Art and performance has suffered through the literal worst year in recent history. But in a historic new year, and with one of Steph's best friends from Undergrad, we look at queer spaces. Through decades underneath the banner and terror of HIV/AIDs, queer artists in New York have been fighting for representation and a voice. This is Queer Chaotic Activism at it's finest: you're welcome.

Join us as we talk about the use of Christian iconography, setting the tone of Catholic Guilt, the archival process of remembering Queer History, the personal development of finding your own way in creative scenes, write the exhibition that remembers the Pandemic, and listening to Steph ask seven hundred questions. It's Fine:tm:.

Find Martyr everywhere! @dragthemaryr on Twitter and Instagram, and read the incredible SIDEWALKKILLA editorial, Martyr: Where Was God When I Was Raped?

Ep 46 - Unpacking Indiana Jones (Movie Night!)

Ep 46 - Unpacking Indiana Jones (Movie Night!)

We watched Indiana Jones so you don't have to. What can be said about a bizarrely outdated movie series that capitalizes on the treasure hunting of acclaimed archeologists? It belongs in the trash. In this George Lucas creation, Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr—"Indiana" Jones, to all—is a tenured professor who fights Nazis and grades term-papers, traveling the world to collect rare, priceless artifacts to quell his own obsessions and fill his university's museum collection. Men will literally become fluent in the dialect and customs of a remote Himalayan tribe and retrieve sacred stones instead of going to therapy.

Scared of snakes and not much else, join your BYWAP hosts as we get very loosey-goosey and yell about it all.

Find out why "it belongs in a museum!" doesn't always dissuade your enemies; contemplate how a Near-Death Experience can help heal the rift between father and son; listen to Stephanie and Elene yell about the racist and glaring plot-holes that come about watching four movies over one weekend; and, groan in dismay knowing that we're still waiting on the fifth Indian Jones movie to be free from this hell.

Ep 45 - Graphic Design in Propaganda

Ep 45 - Graphic Design in Propaganda

So, when we sat down to record this episode last Tuesday, we thought we were being clever and productive with our time. These two art history nerds from the past could not have imagined that the same week they were going to record an episode about Propaganda there would be an attempted coup on the U.S Capitol building. The whole Trump Train Propaganda Machine was right there! And we didn't acknowledge it! Because we thought it would be kicking a dead horse. Instead, armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol during the middle of a global pandemic. Anyways.

Find out how the US should get an honorary doctorate for being a propaganda machine; listen to two babies—oblivious of time and impending terrorism—talk about war and liberty; contemplate how aesthetic choices impact the subconscious better than we could have ever imagined; and, learn about the various symbols that have been used for hope and oppression for decades.
