Diversity, Inclusion, & Cultural Competency for Healthcare Pros - (S1:E10 ) Paula Gutierrez, MHA, CPTC
Athletic trainers (and all other healthcare practitioners for that matter) have a responsibility to provide care in a manner best suited for the person in need of that care. We work daily with highly diverse populations, and often times there may be instances of subconscious bias and unintentional pre-judgement potentially affecting the way we interact and the clinical decisions we make.  The "Golden Rule" of "treat others the way you wish to be treated" is outdated...it's now the Platinum Rule of "treat others the way they wish to be treated, best suited for them." Having an empathetic approach to cultural competency and a strong understanding of how to foster equity and inclusion in your workplace while mitigating bias can be there difference between effective outcomes and broken rapport. Consider this podcast your Diversity, Inclusion, & Cultural Competency 101 course!  Joining Ryan Stevens on this episode is Paula Guitierrez, MHA, CPTC, the Director of Diversity & Inclusion and PROUD Family Health at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset (RWJBarnabas Health).  She has over 10 years of healthcare experience which includes work at NJ Sharing Network - an organization responsible for the allocation of organs and tissues for transplant. Her experience also includes work at NY Presbyterian/Weill Cornell as the Transplant Administrator for the Liver and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant division. A native of Englewood, New Jersey, she went on to graduate from New Jersey Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Seton Hall University with a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration. In 2017, she received the Early Careerist Award from the NJ Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Paula has knowledge in the design and implementation of programs and strategies that foster diversity, equity and inclusion; such as mitigating unconscious bias in hiring and promotion, mentoring, employee resource groups, diversity target setting and other inclusion practices. She has also been instrumental in the expansion of PROUD Family Health, NJ’s first LGBT primary health care center affiliated with a major hospital system. In August 2019, she was appointed as Director of PROUD Family Health where she provides day-to-day operational oversight and programmatic growth. Paula, as a Civil Rights Commissioner for Bloomfield Township, NJ, serves as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University’s School of Health and Medical Sciences and sits on the board of directors of the American College of Healthcare Executives NJ Chapter. Her hobbies include travel, dining and hiking with her dog. Shaping our Future Athletic Trainers - (S1: E9 ) - Tanya Dargush, ATC & Eric Schwartz, MS, ATC
We as ATs have a very important duty.  If we want the future of our profession to be even better than we have it currently, we must provide effective and impactful mentorship for the athletic trainers of the future. There is a purposeful approach to this.  It's always going to be a valuable conversation when you combine a conversation with an NATA Hall of Famer, a former ATSNJ President, and host Ryan Stevens!  Ryan had the opportunity to sit down with Tanya Dargush, LAT, ATC and Eric Schwartz, MS, LAT, ATC, who collaborate as the two athletic trainers serving Washington Township High School in New Jersey. It is no secret Tanya and Eric have done an outstanding job in mentoring future athletic trainers through preceptor affiliations with Rowan University and a successful Washington Township High School Student Aide program. We get deep into it in this episode! Tanya Dargush, a graduate of Central Michigan University, has been Washington Township's AT since 1988. Before arriving at WTHS, she was one of the pioneers of industrial athletic training with her work at Walbro Corporation.  Highly involved in many NATA committees and special interest initiatives throughout her career, Tanya is a nationally know public speaker in AT. She has many amazing accolades, including being a member of the NATA Hall of Fame, the NJ State Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and ATSNJ Hall of Fame.  She is a winner of the NATA Service Award, EATA Scholastic Athletic Trainer Award, and the ATSNJ Distinguished Service Award,   Eric Schwartz, a graduate of East Stroudsberg University and The College of New Jersey, has been an AT at Washington Township since 2011.  A former ATSNJ President, Eric has been honored with the NATA Athletic Trainer Service award, ATSNJ Distinguished Service Award, and the NJSIAA Service Award. Also highly active in our profession, Eric has previously served on the Executive Council, Governmental Affairs, Secondary School, and Public Relations committees of the ATSNJ. He currently serves as the president of the NJ Athletic Training Political Action Committee board of directors.  Want to connect with Tanya and Eric?  tdargush@wtps.org  |  eschwartz@wtps.org

cATalyzing our Profession Forward - (S1:E8) Ryan Stevens Crossover on #ATChat
Advocating for the athletic training profession is more important now than it has ever been. Athletic Training profession recognition is at an all-time high. Our profession continues to move in a positive direction, and we as ATs must own our space and own our profession if we wish to continue to see this growth and enhance our value and brand recognition. In this crossover episode, Ryan Stevens was the featured guest on the Athletic Training Chat Podcast. In this episode, Joel Luedke (host of AT Chat) interviewed Ryan on topics such as the personal growth of ourselves as athletic trainers, interprofessional collaboration, and advancing our profession. This audio was originally published on the #ATChat Podcast (repurposed with permission of Joel Leudke). Athletic Training Chat is a podcast which highlights the profession of athletic training, with the goal being to create a platform for any athletic trainer to share their personal story and their perspective on the impact that athletic training can have.  ATChat discusses topics close to each interview guest, and each episode includes the "ATChat 5" question segment. Interprofessional Collaboration to Promote Wellness - (S1:E7) An Example with Stevens & Weintraub
Now more than ever, it is important for Certified Athletic Trainers to promote wellness and injury/illness risk abatement in our communities. This is a powerful way to showcase our expertise in a way that educates, outside of the normal "setting" we are typically seen in.  Doing so increases brand awareness of our profession, our employer, and ourselves and helps to showcase the value you bring as an AT. A key way to do this is via interprofessional PR collaboration on media platforms such as social media videos, podcasts, radio interviews, and tv interviews.  This throwback episode serves as a thought-provoking example of how Steven Weintraub, DO and I collaborated for the RWJBarnabas Health "RWJ Health Talk" show.  This audio was taken from our January 2018 TV interview (media is property of www.rwjbh.org). Steven Weintraub, DO: Dr. Weintraub is a board-certified physician specializing in sports medicine. He completed medical school at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, then completed a family practice residency at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), followed by a fellowship in sports medicine at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Weintraub is a clinical assistant professor at RWJMS and maintains memberships in the New Jersey Osteopathic Society, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He serves as a team physician for local schools, including Freehold Regional Schools, Howell High School, Freehold Township High School, Colts Neck High School, and Trenton Thunder. He is the consulting sports medicine physician for Monroe High School and St. John Vianney High School. Building Ownership in Those you Serve - (S1:E6) Harold Gibbons
