Minute 67 - The Mr. Mythology Whiz
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 67! On this week's minute, me see Trina tenderize a bit, go on an official rescue mission and welcome back the Filthy Whore crew for what may be their last few minutes of life. We survey some other notable rescue missions in history, unravel the Great Dory Accounting Mystery, as well as, determine Mulligan's clothing choices. As per usual, we decide who wins the scene, quantify gags per minute and ultimately decide if the scene was funny or not. Minute 66 - The Faith in Mankind
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 66! In this minute, the Pope himself makes an appearance, as we discuss our collective faith in humanity, using his Fratelli Tutti encyclical as a reference point. We also learn about other such weighty topics as film compositing, question marks and rotting. We then rally our flags to restore faith in mankind, both through calls to action and through the medium of video games (guest appearance by sconces). But fear not, for we don't betray your faith! We still take time to determine who won the scene, calculate gags per minute and decide on funny/not funny. We hope you'll keep the nightlight on inside your soul for us and join us next week on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 67! Minute 65 - The Frozen Seafood
Hello and Welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 65! On this week's minute, we discuss silly ideas, analyze the inner workings of Calli and Mulligan's relationship and take a New York geography lesson. We also find ourselves discussing frozen seafood, pontificating over when Nathanial personally considered himself a cabin boy and connect the dots for bread humor in the movie. In addition, a couple of true bombshells are dropped, one concerning Nathanial's satchel and another regarding some rather disturbing opinions of one of our very own hosts. As per usual, we discuss who won the scene, quantify gags per minute and ultimately determine whether the minute was funny or not. Thank you again for joining us here on Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 65! Please be sure to keep your sailor boy ass intact for next week to join us on Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 66! Opening music is Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeod (modified) and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Minute 64 - The Mulligan
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 64! Giant things are afoot this week, as we are introduced to Mulligan, played by the fantastic Mike Starr. As we navigate this scene of surreal domesticity, we use Mulligan as a vehicle to learn about pocket protectors, leprechauns, electric toothbrushes, word of mouth advertising, remote shop locations and even housewares! We also take the time to debate whether or not Trina and Nathanial consummated their relationship and the location of Mulligan's shop. Wowza. Mulligan's store receives its proper place in our cache of video game ideas, and Brian throws down the proverbial gauntlet to Chris Elliot for the possession of Nathanial' satchel. And, as always, we briskly discuss who won the scene, gags per minute and funny/not funny. We understand that in today's day and age, we're all so busy trying to keep up with work and the demands of home. Irregardless, we hope you can find time to join us next week on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 65! Opening music is Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeod (modified) and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Minute 63 - The Snake's Fur
Hello and welcome back to another episode of Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 63! Your continued listening is really paying off as this week is chocki full of valuable educational lessons. You get a Psychology 101 crash course in the evaluation of Nathanial's nascent confidence as well as a Biology 101 lesson as we discuss the co-evolution and morphogenesis of fur and scales. We round this all out with a revisit to our guiding quote, "Nothing so liberates the heart as when a fool awakes from his folly" and determine whether any progress has been made in this respect. And finally, as you have come to expect, we of course determine who won the scene, quantify gags per minute and ultimately decide whether the minute was funny or not. Minute 62 - The Metric System
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 62! What will we discuss this week? In fact, it has much to do with the metric system. We learn about the International System of Units, why the United States did not adopt the system, and talk about the greater societal and cultural implications of that refusal. We also touch on record players, dimmers, and the color red, and then discover a call-out to our poor lost Kenneth subtly placed within the scene. The multitude of Calli's arms inspires us to a multitude of ideas, complete with new systems of measurement and a reckoning with that eternal question: Do you really need 6-armed pants? And of course, we find a way to get past our differences and determine who won the scene, calculate gags per minute and decide if the scene was funny or not funny. Don't get caught up too much in your climbing, calling or plumbing practice, make sure you save time to join us next week on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 63! Minute 60 - The Calli featuring Comedian Chad Opitz
Hello and Welcome to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 60!  Ooooooooooh weeeeeeeeeee, in this week's minute, we are joined again by the hilarious Chad Optiz! We are rewarded for our journey by laying our eyes for the first time on the glorious six-armed blue-skinned goddess, Calli, played by Ann Magnuson. We dive deep into the origins of our cave welcome ditty and discuss the puppetry that was involved in creating our six-armed temptress, as well as, discuss the pros and cons of having that many appendages. Furthermore, we try to determine whether the Calli household is a mortgaged studio cave or an owned cave mansion, truly must-have information. As usual, we decide who wins the scene, quantify gags per minute and ultimately decide whether the minute was funny or not. Thank you Chad Opitz for joining us and thank you all for being here and be sure to stock up on mittens and join us next week for Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 61!  You can follow Chad Opitz on twitter at @chadopitz Listen to Chad and Stacie's podcast "Loud and Browed" by clicking here. Minute 59 - The Cliff Climb
Hello and Welcome Back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 59! In this week's minute we are actually climbing a cliff, we survey mountain botany and are aesthetically welcomed through the cave entrance. The tightrope walk of struggle and courage is overcome to get us to this point dear listeners. We get to the nitty gritty of what it takes to overcome fear and support this with the neuroscience of bravery. The little lighted sconces above our heads give us some "great" ideas for how to use interior lighting to keep people working and we dive deep into Calli's lair design in general. And as per usual, we decide who wins the scene, quantify gags per minute and ultimately decide whether the minute is funny or not. Thank you for joining us on Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 59. Minute 58 - The Precise Directions
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 58! This week we consider Cappy and Skunk's advice to Nathanial and join him on his journey to the mountain of the island of Hell's Bucket. We learn a bit about pipe cleaning, caves and Zeus, but then a legend arises from the screenplay. We learn of Nathanial's travels through the jungle tropical rainforest of the island and his encounter with the mythical lizard-lion! The excitement of this discovery drives us to imagine ways to recreate this scene, inspires our calls to action and informs our video game ideas. We then confront the mountains of your expectations and decide who won the scene, calculate GPM and determine if the minute is funny, or not funny. Next week, please take a moment from your lizard-lion cosplay or pool cue swordsmanship and join us on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 59! Minute 57 - The All Thumbs
Hello and Welcome Back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 57! In this week's minute we try to elicit a response from Trina, give some sound romantic advice and express our frustrations of coordination. Another jam-packed episode that has us exploring the world of unlimited possibilities, determining the storied loves of Cappy's life and, of course, going deep on adding a whole lot more thumbs than one may know what to do with. And, as you've come to expect, you will hear a breakdown of gags per minute, who wins the scene and ultimately whether the minute is funny or not. Minute 56 - The Double Dark Willies
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 56! This week we shake off the double-dark willies and join the crew as they encounter the island of Hell's Bucket. Things take a nautical shading as we learn about wolf whistles, the origins of the willies, what to call your boat servant and what you do with a shit load of gravel. We briefly alter our course to consult the screenplay and get a better understanding of the crew's motivations on the island. We are inspired (in spirit) by Jack Daniels and bad sausages as we discuss video games, board games, reality shows and finally realize that what we really need is a restaurant. And we of course embark on that classic mental voyage: who won the scene, gags per minute and funny/not funny. We hope that no matter what you've had for dinner, you're dreaming of us! Minute 54 - The Crazy Kid
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 54! We continue to analyze the crew's encounter with the ice monster (man? berg?) this week, and spend time considering Nathanial's behavior. Is he still a fancy lad? Why sidle past the monster? Is he brave or simply a crazy kid? We debate. In the spirit of making shit up, this minute provides fertile grounds for video game ideas, low-budget theatrical productions, and corporate training videos. We are also inspired to take advantage of recent advances in psychotherapy and drug law to help Adam Resnick through his Cabin Boy related trauma. And no phone calls are made or taken as we decide who won the scene, calculate GPM, and determine funny or not funny. Minute 52 - The Arf Arf Arf
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 52!  Azure peak! Or is it? Questions abound this week on Cabin Boy Minute as the environment and opinions turn cold. Together we learn about icebergs, snow angels and a work of Hans Christen Andersen, but we stand apart when considering the quality of the acting and humor in this minute. We hypothesize that Bill Murray’s presence on set (as told in the commentary) may have rattled the cast in this scene.  Thankfully your hosts are locked in as we workshop a Cabin Boy Christmas Special and prepare to help those in need with our proprietary Cabin Boy Behavior Modification Candies (patent pending). And with sound minds we provide definitive answers to who won the scene, the number of gags in the minute and if the minute was funny, or not funny.  Assuming you’re not too busy practicing your bergy bits, please join us next week on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 53! Minute 50 - The Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 50!  Rob and Scott call in from their very own personal echo chamber for another classic minute of Cabin Boy. Educational opportunities abound as we learn about carnival barkers, honor farms and pumpkin seeds (roasted, unroasted, their link to the Illuminati). Things also take a psychological turn as we discuss attendance in conversation, the sharing of feelings and psychosis. We are inspired to create new products in honor of the movie and begin to catalog questions for Adam and Chris.  And of course we ask those questions only we have dared to ask: who won the scene, gags per minute and funny/not funny. Minute 48 - The Way Out of This featuring Todd Robert Anderson
It's another momentous week on Cabin Boy Minute as we are joined by the renowned writer, director, actor, producer and boating expert Todd Robert Anderson! Todd lends us his breadth of knowledge and quick wit as we explore this well-crafted minute, learning about barnacles, proper boat care and catapults. We consider the parallels between Cabin Boy and Apocalypse Now and appreciate Skunk's quick planning in a unique situation. Brian discovers an alternate version of Chocki's relationship with the crew within the screenplay, and then we play nice to determine who won the scene, calculate GPM and decide if the minute was funny or not funny. If Todd is not recovering from a boat inspection, you can find him on Twitter as @tonnslingdog, expounding about fine cinema on the My Favorite Shitty Movie and Film Pigs podcasts (among others), screaming about buns for Wendy's on TV and convincing you not to act or visit your mother in his books Don't Act: 101 Reasons Why You Shouldn't and The Last Road Trip. All right dear listeners. Hold him tonight, and just one bear cub to you! Join us next week on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 49! Minute 46 - The Salty Sea Talk
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 46! This week we are joined by a dear friend and fan of the show, Danielle! She will be providing a female perspective on the movie which had been sorely lacking until now. Together we discuss how Trina has handled herself and the crew thus far, suffer some salty sea talk, learn about omnibuses and pudding, give praise to the work done by Melora Walters and try to use Paps' behavior as a lesson for us all. We ask for an update to the Filthy Whore's sexual harassment policies and for the rest of Trina's story (both before and after the story of Cabin Boy). Ensuring that we don't lose perspective on our roles as Cabin Boy analysts, we discuss who won the scene, enumerate the gags per minute and make the call on funny or not funny. Does this movie belong to Nathanial, or does it in fact belong to Trina? Only further analysis will tell, so join us next week on Cabin Boy Minute for Minute 47! Minute 44 - The Maryland to Maryland
Hello and welcome back to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 44! This week we are formally introduced to the strong and stunning Trina, played by the great Melora Walters. We then take a lap through the long-distance swimming community, challenge the veracity of Trina's world-record breaking swim, offer encouragement to nascent engineers and theorize about Nathanial's state of matter. We support Adam's attempt to compliment his movie in the commentary and plan out a legitimate competition to swim around the world (Maryland to Maryland). We then abide by the rules set forth for our podcast and determine who won the scene, calculate GPM and decide if the minute was funny or not funny. You may not be able to trust everything you see and hear in this movie, but you can always trust that we'll be here to explain it to you, dear listeners! In this minute we join Kenny and Nathanial on watch, learn a bit of the history of primates in popular entertainment, visit the Graybar building in NYC, find out how to cast aspersions in Spanish and prepare to go on a holiday. We consider the atmospherics of Steve Bartek's score, hope for it's eventual release and for another team-up of Adam and Chris' comedic genius. This minute is again a font of inspiration for games, the theater and musings on the nature of life and humanity. We question the nature of motivation, but are of course still motivated to determine who won the scene, gags per minute and whether the scene is funny, or not funny. Please do not disperse dear friends, don't be distracted by silver-tongued fancy lads, keep your playlists clear next week for Cabin Boy Minute, Minute 23! Minute 21 - The Fisherman's Greek
Hello and Welcome to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 21! This week we follow Nathanial as he concludes his negotiations with Big Teddy, makes a questionably emotional entreaty to Paps, and then tag along as he tries to absorb a little Fisherman's Greek. We attempt an etymological analysis of Fisherman's Greek and scour the languages of the globe, and perhaps the limits of decency, in our research. Our minute ends with a SHOCKING revelation and Paps' quiet chuckling. We then continue to brainstorm elements for a video game and theatrical production, determine the topic of a classroom lesson and officially call for a professional analysis of Fisherman's Greek. We then break down the GPM score, decide who won the scene (no surprise this week!) and establish if the scene was funny or not funny. A big Gadinga Pachinga Castinga to you and yours, and we look forward to you joining us next week on Minute 22! You know what that means, yes you do! Minute 20 - The Christening Wig featuring Comedian Chad Opitz
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 20! In this very special minute we are joined by the great Chad Opitz, stand-up comedy-man extra-ordinaire, as we consider the events of the quarter-pole minute of the movie. Mother Goose makes an appearance, we react to the reactions of the crew as Cappy confronts Nathanial, we attempt to learn about christening wigs, successfully learn about peckerheads, and marvel as our research takes us from Hawaii to Benignia, by way of London. Chad blesses us with his musings on Nathanial’s manliness, a dead-on James Gammon impression and his knowledge of Oingo Boingo. During our analysis we introduce some new questions in which we ideate on a Cabin Boy video game, come up with a Call to Action and discuss what a class based on Cabin Boy would look like. But don’t worry, we still answer the classic questions: who won the scene, GPM and funny/not funny! You can learn about the origins of the term peckerhead here or snag yourself a pound of chocolate covered macadamian nuts here. Don’t let your linguistic wigs float away, ‘cause you’ll need them for next week's Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 21! Minute 18 - The Stowaway
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 18!  In Minute 18, Nathanial and Cappy awake from a communal night’s rest, the crew and Nathanial are introduced, and our fancy lad comes to grips with his new reality.  Brian, Robert and Scott continue their nautical education, including the mending of nets and international stowaway laws. A Lost in Space reference is unearthed, we spend a moment in late ‘60s France and wrestle with Adam Resnick’s feelings about the movie.  As we perform our analysis of the scene, we realize that we can no longer simply be swept along and begin to question our questions. But given the gravity of this task, we still let you know who won the scene, the nature of alternative realities, the value of GPM and whether the scene was funny. To get a taste of one of the many inspirations and references for Nathanial, you can watch Dr. Smith in Lost in Space here.  You can also pick up Adam’s wonderful book, Will Not Attend, through this link.  With your general health, welfare and safety in hand, please join us next week for Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 19!  Opening music is Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeod (modified) and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 17! On this episode we find out if we have enough ocean behind us, determine what could possibly inebriate Nathanial enough to remain sleeping after Cappy's prodding, and discover a phenomenal easter egg in Cappy's bunk. As usual, we determine the gags per minute, analyze Adam Resnick's psyche and make a determination on whether the minute is funny or not. Minute 16 - The Music Box
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 16! In minute 16 Paps opines on Kenny's intellect, the crew prepares the Filthy Whore for departure and then relaxes after a hard day's sailing. Your dedicated analysts learn about sailing terminology, compare and contrast Cabin Boy to Captains Courageous, investigate the provenance of Nathanial's music box and wonder about the health of the crew. We are treated to yet another SHOCKING revelation and dream up some new cast members for the crew. We end with our standard analysis: who won the scene, what could make these scene more palatable, how does the scene relate to the foundational quote, determine GPM and work through the clear, yet not, answer to funny/not funny. We hope you're enjoying this journey with us (in one place or many). We'll continue to sate your thirst for more of Nathanial and the crew next week on Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 17! Minute 13 - The Theme Ship
Hello and Welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 13!  Here it is!  The momentous occasion where Nathanial steps foot on the Filthy Whore for the first time!  He continues his conversation with his host, Kenny, and uses his powerful powers of persuasion to mold reality to suit his needs in determining that this is, in fact, a theme ship.  He is welcomed down into the ships bellows and introduced to his sleeping quarters, and of course, the best bunk - the Captain's.  We discuss all of the delicious details of this scene, try to determine where each of our shipmates sleep and debate what a better budget would have done to the perception of this classic.  Thank you for joining us and we look forward to enjoying some bouillon with you next week on Cabin Boy Minute - Minute 14!  Opening music is Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeod (modified) and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Minute 12 - The Kenny
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 12! In minute 12 we say goodbye to the Old Salt and on the docks of Backtown meet the inimitable Kenny (Andy Richter). We learn about his Continental manner of dress, a potential connection with Star Trek, the strength of Nathanial’s priors, and investigate Nathanial’s boarding pass and man-bag. Additionally we join Adam and Chris in praising Andy’s work and learn a bit about his cinematic debut. We then determine who won the scene, what could be done to improve palatability, decide whether Bill Murray could replace Andy Richter, contrast the foolishness of Kenny and Nathanial, calculate GPM and debate funny/not funny. If you’d like to see Andy Richter’s first film, check out The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom. 4.5 stars! Minute 11 - The London Broil
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 11!  In this week's episode, we discuss fowl sacrifices and matte shots used to create a sea-like atmosphere for Backtown. We ponder whether Cabin Boy joins the ranks of the Wizard of Oz and/or Three Men and a Baby with a notorious apparition in the background.  And of course, we get to the meat of our conversation with the Old Salt in the Fishing village where he sates our big comedic appetite through meat advice and general fancy-type jabs. As always, we contrast the film and the contents of the original screenplay, we engage in what could potentially have been done to make this minute more palatable to a general audience, calculate gags per minute and conclude whether the minute was funny or not.  Enjoy!  Be sure to pamper yourself again and join us next week for Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 12!  Opening music is Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeod (modified) and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Minute 10 - The Old Salt
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 10! In this momentous episode Nathanial continues to wander through Backtown until he meets the old salt (Earl Hofert/David Letterman). We note additional residents of Backtown and their impact on our perception of time, take a close look at the general store (they have fudgesicles!), learn a bit about sock monkeys, as well as a bit about Mr. Letterman. We discuss the impact of Letterman’s performance on the popularity and perpetuation of Cabin Boy, and the emotional sacrifice made by Resnick. We then answer the questions of who wins the scene, who is most embarrassed, what would make the scene more palatable, calculate GPM, decide on funny/not funny, relate the scene to our fool’s journey and ponder whether familiarity breeds respect or contempt. You can watch David Letterman and a parade of mid-90’s celebrities spoof his acting at the 67th Academy Awards here:  https://youtu.be/AH46OAmKNCw Sock monkey by your side or not, we hope to see you again next week for Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 11! Minute 9 - The Cow
Hello and welcome to Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 9!  In minute 9 Nathanial finds his accidental way to Backtown, not the Golden Mist Seaport that he is searching for. We meet a contemptuous cow, learn a bit about cinematography (reverse shots and process shots), opine on Resnick’s relationship with the film crew, discuss the buildings and denizens of Backtown, their interaction with Nathanial and wonder if our minds have been screwed.  In our post-minute dialogue, we figure out who wins the scene, who is most embarrassed, what would make the scene more palatable and how Tim Burton may have contributed, calculate GPM, determine funny/not funny, identify celebrity replacements and relate the scene to the establishing quote. Our ponderings take us through musing about the greater Cabin Boy world, what lurks in the heart of Nathanial, the caste system, and Nathanial’s self-stratification as compared to his fellow man. While our protagonist may be terrible, we think that you are wonderful, dear listeners.  Join us again next episode for Cabin Boy Minute: Minute 10!  Opening music is Take a Chance by Kevin MacLeod (modified) and licensed under CC BY 4.0.
