#50 Braving the Wilderness
Why the wilderness? There are plenty of Biblical examples of wilderness: Jesus, David, Moses (before Exodus), and God’s people. What are the commonalities? The differences? What does the wilderness mean for us? Mike and Chad discuss in this week's episode! Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:2-9 Passage from The Screwtape Letters written by CS Lewis (from the senior tempter to the junior tempter) Merely to override a human will (as His felt presence in any but the faintest and most mitigated degree would certainly do) would be for Him useless. He cannot ravish. He can only woo. For His ignoble idea is to eat the cake and have it; the creatures are to be one with Him, but yet themselves; merely to cancel them, or assimilate them, will not serve. He is prepared to do a little overriding at the beginning. He will set them off with communications of His presence which, though faint, seem great to them, with emotional sweetness, and easy conquest over temptation. But He never allows this state of affairs to last long. Sooner or later He withdraws, if not in fact, at least from their conscious experience, all those supports and incentives. He leaves the creature to stand up on its own legs—to carry out from the will alone duties which have lost all relish. It is during such trough periods, much more than during the peak periods, that it is growing into the sort of creature He wants it to be. Hence the prayers offered in the state of dryness are those which please Him best…. He cannot “tempt” to virtue as we do to vice. He wants them to learn to walk and must therefore take away His hand; and if only the will to walk is really there He is pleased even with their stumbles. Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.

#20 Jesus Unexpected: Broke Unnecessary Rules
Jesus went Rogue and was unexpected by the religious people of his day. Here from Mike and Chad on what that means for us in today's world. Scripture references: Matthew 12:1-8 & Luke 6:6-11 & Colossians 2:20-23 CS Lewis Quote: "The terrible thing, the almost impossible thing, is to hand over your whole self – all your wishes and precautions – to Christ. But it is far easier than what we are all trying to do instead. For what we are trying to do is to remain what we call ‘ourselves’, to keep personal happiness as our great aim in life, and yet at the same time to be ‘good’. We are all trying to let our mind and heart go their own way – centered on money or pleasure or ambition – and hoping, in spite of this, to behave honestly and chastely and humbly. And that is exactly what Christ warned us you could not do. As He said, a thistle cannot produce figs. If I am a field that contains nothing but grass-seed, I cannot produce wheat. Cutting the grass may keep it short: but I shall still produce grass and no wheat. If I want to produce wheat, the change must go deeper than the surface. I must be ploughed up and re-sown." – Mere Christianity

#7 Judges - Othniel
Is there room for ordinary?  Is there a place for everyday, faithful people to make an impact?  Today we meet just your ordinary guy in the Bible. He doesn’t have an unusual beginning. He doesn’t do great miracles. He doesn’t make a big splash in the culture. But he lives faithfully before God and others, every day, day after day, same after every same day and God uses Him. What makes the ordinary, extraordinary, the power of living faithfully. Instead of holding on tightly to who he thought he needed to be, he became who God meant him to be. If you ever wonder if God notices, or sees or cares about your life, take notice. That is the lesson of everyday faithfulness. Let go of who you think you should be and become who God meant you to be. Judges Resource Video Scripture for this week is Judges 3.

#6 The Book of JUDGES Overview
This week is an overview of the whole book and series. The book of Judges consists of a similarly repeated cycle in this period of Israel’s history:  The people become complacent and turn their focus away from God.  Eventually, trouble and difficulty come their way, usually from oppressive enemies. They call out to God for help and God raises up a Judge who leads them to political victory and spiritual fullness. The people turn to God and enjoy His favor until they become complacent and the cycle repeats itself.  We all bow down to something or someone. Our choice is whether we bow to a God who saves or a God who enslaves us. Judges reminds us that small areas of disbelief can have big consequences. Listen as Chad and Mike go beyond the message in this week's Rogue Table Talks! This week's Bible passage is Judges 1 & Judges 2.
