Pete Thompson is the proud chairman of Cambridge and Coleridge Athletics Club. He is also a top runner with 30 years of racing under his belt. In the veteran ranks he has excelled and regularly achieves over 90% for his age-graded results. MARK MATTHEWS
Mark Matthews has been at the forefront of the news in the endurance-sports world recently as the team manager for his wife Katrina at the ‘Sub 8’ Project where she completed the Ironman Triathlon distance in 7:31:54!! Mark and I discussed his role and the tactics involved in this event at some length, but before we do so we talk about Mark’s own sporting background and achievements which are certainly wide-ranging and considerable! HAYLEY SIMMONDS The fastest female cyclist in Britain
Hayley Simmonds is nothing short of a cycling superstar. She has the British record for 10, 25 and 50 Mike Time Trials. She is a Commonwealth and European Games medalist and has won the National Hill Climb Championships! Not bad fir someone who used to be a heavyweight Cambridge University rower!! As is often the case I really didn’t have enough time to talk properly to David about his amazing experiences on a bike. We did manage to cover his getting into cycling in Cambridge and follow through the start of his career which took him to teams in , Belgium, France , the UK and then Italy. From his base there he rode some UCI 1.1 races and has fond memories of being on the wheel of the likes of Damiano Cunego and Cadel Evans. I hope to get David back on later in the year to talk about much more including the Tour of Costa Rica and, closer to home, the Rob McLean Junior Triathlon which is named after David’s dad. Tom and Victoria are both accomplished athletes, active members of Cambridge Tri Club, and very busy people. Victoria is at the top of her age group in Sprint Triathlon and has begun competing at elite level. Tom is a regular on the overall podium at Aquathlon races and competes as an age-grouper for GB.... but he doesn’t ride a bike! Above all this is a story of how endurance sport brought these two people together m, culminating in a very original proposal..and marriage! MARK VILE Spearheading the Cambridge & Coleridge success story.
Mark was a great runner himself. A National Cross Country winner and many England vests to his name. For the last 10 years or so he has been building an incredibly successful group of athletes at Cambridge and Coleridge.
