CCC Special: Justice for Beth, Part 3

In Part 3 of #JusticeforBeth, Cameron Jay introduces listeners to the man responsible for killing Beth Buchanan and injuring Julie Buchanan- Cesar Raudales Macias.

He would be transported to an Athens hospital to undergo surgery for his own injuries. But, Cesar would be released from the hospital to his parent's home. When authorities went to make their arrest? Cesar Raudales Macias had fled.

The episode details Lieutenant David Witte of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office's investigation into Cesar, the shocking revelation that their suspect was now a fugitive, and details how listeners can help in finding this man. Cesar Raudales Macias is described as a 26-year old hispanic male, five feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 165 pounds. He has black hair and green eyes and was last seen in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia.

CCC Special: Justice for Beth, Part 2

CCC Special: Justice for Beth, Part 2

In Part 2 of #JusticeforBeth, we return to the early morning hours of February 13, 2023. Beth Buchanan was en route to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with her mother, Julie, who had a flight to catch back to California after a weekend in Athens. But, something would go terribly wrong.

A driver on the wrong side of the road would collide with the Buchanan's, taking Beth's life instantly and seriously injuring her mother. Listen in as Julie recounts these harrowing moments, and as her family tells the story of how they came to know of the nightmare that was just beginning.

The collision was more than just a terrible accident. Instead, you'll learn that one driver's decision to get behind the wheel of a car would alter the Buchanan family forever. Hear from Lieutenant David Witte as he recounts the scene of the crash and the start of an investigation that would be filled with twists and turns...

In this special update of Classic City Crime- and the final episode in the coverage of infant Jonathan Foundling, host Cameron Jay sits down to catch up with former Unviersity of Georgia Police Chief Chuck Horton and former Assistant Police Chief Connie Sampson to hear from them what the solving of this case means for them, 27 years later. CCC Special: SOLVED! The Case of Baby Jonathan Foundling Part 3

CCC Special: SOLVED! The Case of Baby Jonathan Foundling Part 3

In this special update of Classic City Crime, host Cameron Jay explores how the case of an infant baby boy was solved. The infant, named Jonathan Foundling by investigators, was discovered in the basement bathroom of the Oglethorpe House Dormitory at the University of Georgia just over 27 years ago. In recent weeks, investigators at the University of Georgia Police Department informed the community that the baby's mother had been identified through Genealogical DNA testing provided by Othram Inc. The mother's name? Katherine Grant. Grant was a student at the University of Georgia in 1995 and 1996, before transferring to another school. She would return to the University of Georgia after graduation, working for the College of Veterinary Medicine until her death by suicide in 2004.

In this first follow up episode, Cameron Jay sits down with Tracy Grant- the brother of Katherine Grant and the now-identified uncle of Jonathan Foundling to discuss the startling reality that is now his: not only did he have a nephew he knew nothing about, but police now believe his sister to be responsible for the baby's death. We also talk with a former colleague of Katherine's-- did she know anything was wrong?

Part 5: Robbie and Genelle

Part 5: Robbie and Genelle

In Part 5, host Cameron Jay pays homage to Fox 5 Atlanta’s Randy Travis, a seasoned investigative reporter who singlehandedly gave the murders of Robbie Bryant and Genelle Helms the attention it deserved all those years ago. Randy will confirm some of what we have already learned, while explaining why this case mattered so much to him. Here's Randy's story mentioned in the episode: https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/baby-kelsey-at-29-im-so-much-stronger-than-this-story

You’ll then hear from Kesley Bryant, the daughter of the slain couple, discuss how the loss of her birth parents has affected every aspect of her life– but also how she’s managed to work through those hardships and is leading a successful life she hopes her parents can now be proud of.

We’ll end the episode by speaking with ACCPD Police Chief Jerry Saulters, who explains where the case currently stands- and who authorities have their sights set on in the modern day.

Part 4: Robbie and Genelle

Part 4: Robbie and Genelle

In Part 4 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay centers the podcast on the one man at the center of the entire investigation: the uncle of victim Genelle Helms. The investigation quickly centered on the Florida man, claiming that there was motive, means, and opportunity. What was that motive? And how did this investigation not only affect the lives of those who loved Robbie and Genelle– but how did it affect the young couple’s nine month old baby? We’ll address all of this and more.

Part 3: Robbie and Genelle

In Part 3 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay revisits the murder. In January of 1994, the young couple with their entire futures ahead of them were brutally murdered in their Athens home. Together, we’ll examine the initial police report, learn what friends were told of the murder and the crime scene, and we’ll learn that there were- at least initially- several avenues for investigators of the Athens Clarke County Police department to explore. You'll also hear from Dr. David Waldron of Federation University in Australia, who helps us understand why the couple's fascination with Dungeons and Dragons might have garnered the attention of investigators in 1994.

Part 2: Robbie and Genelle

In Part 2 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay dives deeper into the lives of Robbie Bryant and Genelle Helms as a couple, and how the birth of their baby girl changed their entire worlds just nine months before they were murdered.

We learn that the two were heavily invested in a local gaming group, which partook in everything from Live Action Role Playing outdoors on the fields at the University of Georgia, to Dungeons and Dragons. Together, we’ll learn that in this friend group, there was much more than meets the eye. Learn more about their interesting lives- and romances- by listening now!

Part 1: Robbie and Genelle

In Part 1 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay takes listeners back to 1994 in Athens, Georgia, where Robbie Bryant and Genelle Helms were first getting their start in life. The episode will teach you more about both of them as individuals: who were they? What did they enjoy doing? What do their friends have to say about their lives?

We begin here because understanding who the victims were and how they lived their lives is always a key part in understanding why the young couple might have been murdered in 1994…and who might be involved.

S1E26: Tara Baker, Something is Stirring

Host Cameron Jay returns with the 26th episode of Classic City Crime. Why? Because "something is stirring." Over the last few weeks, the uptick in leads and people willing to speak out has all of us here at the podcast hopeful that more pieces to the puzzle can come to light. In this special update, Cameron sits down with Athens Clarke County Fireman Doug Whitehead, the first of three firemen to arrive on scene to the fire at 160 Fawn Drive in January of 2001. This is his first time speaking publicly since he discovered Tara's body 22 years ago, and his words shed new light on what really occurred in Tara's home.

Tara's mother, Mrs. Virginia, joins the podcast again to thank Doug for his courage, but to plead with anyone with information to come forward. Are you the person who holds the final puzzle piece?

On a cold January day in 1996, the discovery of a newborn’s body in the Oglethorpe House Dormitory at the University of Georgia shocked the student community, the local Athens, Georgia community, and the police tasked with searching for answers. The infant baby was given the name Jonathan Foundling by local law enforcement.
In “The Case of Jonathan Foundling: Our Child”, host Cameron Jay speaks with former University of Georgia Police Chief Chuck Horton and former Assistant Police Chief Connie Sampson to discuss what really happened, what the early days of the investigation looked like, and why the case remains unsolved 26 years later.
The episode ends with a psychological discussion about the case with Dr. Debra Cowart Steckler, followed by a modern-day update on how technological advances could finally lead to answers for the Athens and University community.

In Part 5, host Cameron Jay discusses the arrest and questioning of Clinton Bankston for ‘The Athens Murders of 1987’. The 15-turned-16 year old young teen was facing the possibility of being sentenced to death when defense Attorney Ed Tolley challenged the death sentence in a case that would ultimately change the law in the state of Georgia- sparing Bankston’s life.

We discuss the complexities of the case as we revisit Bankston’s own words and try to find out why this crime happened and if it could have been prevented?

Part 1: The Athens Murders of 1987

Part 1: The Athens Murders of 1987

In Part 1 of our new mini-series regarding the 1987 murders of a retired couple and woman, her sister, and her niece begins with an introduction to the Classic City at the time. It was a place moving and grooving with local music on the rise, bands going national, and relatively little violent crime. That is, until April of 1987, when Drs. Glenn and Rachel Sutton were murdered in their Oglethorpe Avenue home. In this episode, host Cameron Jay introduces listeners to the Suttons, their home, and their life devoted to academics and service.

Part 7: The Murder of T.K. Harty

Part 7: The Murder of T.K. Harty

In Part 7 of Classic City Crime's exclusive look at the historic murder of Theodore T.K. Harty, host Cameron Jay sits down with two professors of forensic psychology to discuss the minds of John Mooney and Elmo Florence, and what they possibly could have been thinking when they hatched the plan to threaten and kill T.K. Harty.

You'll meet UGA Forensic Psychology professor Trina Cyterski and Debra Cowart Steckler, professor of psychological studies at Martha Washington University. While Cyterski offers an academic look at the role psychopathy might have played in the lives of those involved, Steckler provides a personal and reflective account of her own interactions with John Henry Mooney as a waitress at Somebody's Pizza in 1977.

Part 6: The Murder of T.K. Harty

Part 6: The Murder of T.K. Harty

What if we told you that everything we've heard thus far is not the case? That maybe T.K. Harty wasn't killed over the beer war, or perhaps that the eviction Harty handed John Mooney wasn't the end all...what if something bigger was at play, what if the real reason Mooney wanted Harty dead was related to a large real estate transaction involving the Southern Railway Company?

In Part 6, host Cameron Jay talks with businessman Bob Gentile, who details several conversations he reportedly had with Harty before the murder...conversations in which T.K. admits he was going to be killed, but not over anything to do with The Station. Tune in to find out.

Part 2: The Murder of T.K. Harty

Part 2: The Murder of T.K. Harty

Someone had confessed to the murder of Athens businessman T.K. Harty in 1977. Who? Oven repairman Elmo Florence. This week, host Cameron Jay sits down with Mr. Reinhold, who heard first-hand the account Elmo gave of his fatal encounter with T.K. on August 30, 1977.

But Elmo Florence had not only implicated himself. He said he had been hired by Harty's business rival John Mooney- T.K. Harty’s business rival and the owner of Somebody’s Pizza. In the second half of this episode, Mooney’s business partner Jimmy Dunnett tells of the John he knew, and the demise of T.K. Harty that he saw coming.

A story of twists and turns, Part 2 sets the story up to take listeners to the trials of Elmo Florence and John Mooney-- and the aftermath full of surprises.

Part 1: The Murder of T.K. Harty

Part 1: The Murder of T.K. Harty

For this new Classic City Crime Miniseries, host Cameron Jay takes listeners back to Athens, Georgia 1977 where The Station had become a central place for entertainment, dining, and as Athens would have it- drinking. The old railway depot had been converted into the prime gathering place for students and locals a few years prior by businessman Lee Epting, just 26 years old at the time.

In Part 1 of this series, Epting explains to listeners how "The Station" came to be and what it meant to the people of Athens. To understand the story of T.K. Harty, you have to start at the Station- where a feud was brewing between Harty and his business rival John Mooney. It was a feud that would lead to murder, and so much more we'll talk about over the next several weeks.
