How to get better at your job everyday

How to get better at your job everyday

Zach Fendrick Doctor of Physical Therapy is a highly skilled Therapist in the NJ area.  Zach has only been out of PT school for a 3 years at the time of this interview, but he continues to actively learn every day.  Zach is a great representation of someone hungry to learn more about their craft to better help their patients on a daily basis.  While he has not been doing this job for 10+ years, I would absolutely refer my closest friends and family to be treated by him right now because he has put in a lot of work to be a high level professional.

The point of this podcast episode is to show that time spent doing a job does not mean better outcomes or higher level of skill.  There are many people putting in hours of work every week to better improve their skill set, and if you didn't get the outcome you were hoping for in your own health journey, maybe just maybe, you needed to be linked up with someone different at that time.

Please give a follow to Zach on his professional Instagram @zachfendrick.pt

A History of Hands on Treatment by Physical Therapists - Interview with Martin Langaas

A History of Hands on Treatment by Physical Therapists - Interview with Martin Langaas

In this episode I interview Martin Langaas the Co-Founder and Director of the Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (IOMT).

We discuss the historical contact of what Physical Therapy (or Physiotherapy in Europe) used to look like before Freddy Kaltenborn and Olaf Evjenth from Norway refused to accept the patient outcomes they were achieving in their practice.

Martin brings up a couple of important points that are often missed when treating patients, such that learning to do less with your body is necessary before learning to add more when pain is the main reason for seeking care.

About Martin Langaas:

He graduated in 1982 from the Physical Therapy College in Berlin, Germany, and after graduation, returned to Norway to attend the National Norwegian Fellowship Program. He trained extensively with Olaf Evjenth and Freddy Kaltenborn, the developers of the Kaltenborn/Evjenth Orthopaedic Manual Therapy System. Martin completed the Fellowship Program and obtained his OMT certification in 1989, moving shortly thereafter to the United States.

With a passion for education and teaching, Martin founded and opened the IOMT in Woburn, Massachusetts. In conjunction with Orthopaedics Plus and Winchester Hospital, Martin has been leading and teaching at the IOMT since 1991. There have been many changes throughout the years, but bridging the gap between academics and clinical care has always been of utmost importance. In 2016, IOMT joined the Professional Physical Therapy organization where he also serves as their Co-Director of Clinical Education. Martin now operates IOMT out of the Professional Physical Therapy Woburn, MA Location and utilizes the Professional Physical Therapy network for clinical sites for supervised patient care.

Since 1991, Martin has also lectured and presented workshops throughout the United States. In 2007, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) presented Martin a prestigious award in recognition of Outstanding Instruction in a Post-Professional Clinical Education Fellowship Program. Martin’s goal has always been to assist developing therapists in bridging and integrating academic knowledge with daily clinical practice. Martin also owns and operates a private practice, Langaas Spine Care, in York, ME.

Athletic Trainers Can Be Much More Than Just Sideline Caretakers

Athletic Trainers Can Be Much More Than Just Sideline Caretakers

It isn't uncommon for someone to travel out of their way for a delicious meal at their favorite restaurant.

Or travel a long distance to seek medical advice in a city that has Doctors with specialized training.

Is it so strange then to seek care from a Physical Therapist or Athletic Trainer that has done advanced training and continues to learn daily?  It is unfortunate that some individuals view going to PT or Athletic Trainer as "something" they have tried rather than "someone" they have tried.

Not all chefs are the same, nor are all surgeons... why would Physical Therapists or Atheltic Trainers be any different?

In this episode I talk with Dr. Daniel Waterman of Variable Movement, LLC in Blue Hill, Maine.  We discuss how his continued training and personal curiosity about the human body helped him become a better clinician which led him to open up his own business.

If you have any questions feel free to send Dr. Waterman questions at

"Good" Posture is Not What It Seems with Dr. Ted Greeley

"Good" Posture is Not What It Seems with Dr. Ted Greeley

We all grew up with a notion of what "good" posture is.

Someone close to us tried to help us out so we didn't end up like them with aches and pains due to "bad" posture.

In this episode I interview Dr. Ted Greeley, Physical Therapist as he shares his professional story of how he arrived at helping facilitate positive outcomes in his patients by giving them small pieces of information to better help them understand what healthy posture is.

Ted has been a Physical Therapist for 10 years actively increasing his knowledge and skill set by attending various continuing education events.  He started his career by treating people with a traditional approach to Physical Therapy and Orthopedics, but in the last few years has been focusing on whole body movement and breathing to help patients feel better.

Ted shares his successes and curiosities that brought him to his current understanding of human movement.  He also provides examples of how posture and breathing can affect diagnosis' of thumb and big toe pain.

Listen to the interview with Ted to find out how why the concept of good posture that our parent's taught us might need to be updated.

You can also view the video of the episode in its entirety at my Youtube channel.
