The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 20: Triple Crown Hoedown - Interview With Thru-Hiking Class of 2021

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 20: Triple Crown Hoedown - Interview With Thru-Hiking Class of 2021

Yeeeeehaw! Camps collide in this special episode of The Camp Walk•Along Wire. Those campers from across the lake at Camp AT and Camp PCT are here to tell us all about their experiences thru hiking in 2021. We've told you all about the Continental Divide Trail, and now you can hear all about life on the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail with a little help from our friends!

Joining us to talk about his experience on the Pacific Crest Trail is Tyler Clements, known on trail as "Tabs" and if you listen in, you can hear all about how he earned that name. His thoughtful and well planned approach can provide a different lens in to thru hiking than the happy-go-stupid approach that we seem to favor.

Also joining us to talk about her experience on the Appalachian Trail is Shannon Foley, also known as "Potential Roadkill". Roadkill offers up her experience doing a unique flip flop path as a reaction to circumstance and injury and how it shaped her hike! She also shares a little insight on her background, and how she came to be a thru hiker.

The Campfire burns bright as all involved gather to talk about similarities and differences on the different trails, and get to know each other a little better. Turns out those kids from across the lake weren't so bad after all!

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 18: Live The Adventure - CDT Hiker Tips and Stories

Howdy Campers! We’ve got something a little different for you this week! We have some of our fellow hikers from the CDT on to share some of their most memorable experiences and provide some of their advice for your own future journeys! The phrase "Hike your own hike" is used in a lot of different ways on trail - it can be used to tell someone to go away, to encourage someone, or to settle a disagreement in a neutral way, but it also just means: do it however you need to for you to keep going! Listen to our fellow hikers as they share how they hiked their own hike!

The Camp Walk-Along Wire Episode 17: The Last Day of Camp - East Glacier, MT to Home

The Camp Walk-Along Wire Episode 17: The Last Day of Camp - East Glacier, MT to Home

Howdy to all of our dear campers. We've had such a wonderful summer with each one of you! The bags are packed, the bunks are cleaned, and the buses are on their way. We have one last camp meeting before you all head home though, and don't you worry.... summer camp will always live on in our hearts. Camp Walk·Along will continue to come out with new episodes and summer camp will be back before you know it, but more on that later!

Listen along as we recant our tales of the final 100 miles, and slowly wrap up the trail. Some familiar friends return as we make our way out of the rocky mountains (except for PDF who's a full time Rocky Mountain boy) and everybody makes their way home! Wizardspoon and Bison return to Indiana where it all began, but don't worry campers- Hoosier state facts will have to wait for another day. We're back home now, resting and happy, but we will be back soon with one final episode about our experience on the Continental Divide trail. Keep an eye out for all our details on Summer Camp 2022 as well! We love you all campers, and hey... we went on a walk! Thank you for walking along!

As our counselors wrap up the hike, we’re glad to have you with us this season! If you have any questions for our campers, send them our way at campwalkalong@gmail.com or hit us up @campwalkalong on instagram. If your question is featured on air, we’ll reach out to make sure you receive an official Camp Walk•along sticker. Our camp is powered by you - the campers. If you feel so inclined, financial contributions to the hike can be made at anchor.fm/camp-walkalong and your support, emotional, financial, or otherwise, is truly appreciated. Leave a rating and subscribe on your platform of choice! Our camp staff wants you to have the best summer ever.

The Camp Walk-Along Wire Episode 16: Bear Country - Butte, MT to East Glacier, MT

Howdy campers! Your favorite trail friends are back with just 100 sweet miles left in this incredible journey. Grab your favorite trail snacks (if you have any food left after that last stretch) and listen in! This week we bring you a roller coaster of an adventure through the final stretches of the CDT. The boys venture on through the Bob Marshall wilderness, and find themselves unexpectedly separated. If you've been lost without us, then you're not unlike Bison who has a habit of navigating the old fashioned way-badly! There's good news: Wizardspoon rolls a joint. There's bad news: it was his ankle. Come along with us as we get ever closer to our final passage through Glacier National Park!

Thanks for walking along with us! As our counselors continue through Montana and beyond, we’re glad to have you with us this season! The Camp Walk-Along Wire Episode 15: Bison Jams - Dubois, WY to Butte, MT

Howdy Campers and welcome back to The Camp Walk•Along Wire! It's time to sit down on your couch and double barrel some White Claws as we finally reach our final state: Montana!

The boys are back in the National Park System as they enter and explore Yellowstone. They didn't have to go it alone through Yellowstone (and this episode) and were joined by that rude nude dude, Nude Beach, and that pickin' wild mild child, Buckmild. We discuss our inability to make reservations, a mysterious door marked "TUB ROOM", and everybody's favorite tactful recitation of government designated information: State Facts with Marcus! We're on our very last state, so buckle up (your pack) as we finish out this beautiful trail!

Thanks for walking along with us! As our counselors continue through Montana and beyond, we’re glad to have you with us this season! The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 14: The Great Basin - Rawlins, WY to Dubois, WY

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 14: The Great Basin - Rawlins, WY to Dubois, WY

Welcome to week 14 of the Camp Walk•Along Wire! This week! For the first time in history! Never seen before on this trail or any other! Bison admits he was wrong about something!!!

The boys have landed in Lander, roared in to Rawlins, and finally the boys are in Dubois. Wyoming's heat has taken a toll, but Wyoming has also served up some incredible visual feasts for old Spoon and Bison. While resting up in town, the delightful duo reminisces on the previous week of adventures. Then, we recap the Wind River Range as 'No Sky July' finally comes to a merciful end. They also make a call to PDF to learn more about his off trail adventures. Finally they discuss some historic areas, and cross over parts of The Oregon Trail. With that, we urge you to pack up your wagon and pray you don't die of dysentery on this week's episode of The Camp Walk•Along Wire!

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 12: The Great Outdoor Life - Copper Mountain, CO to Steamboat Springs, CO

Welcome to week 12 of the Camp Walk•Along Wire! Enjoy the last of the time we have together in Colorado as we finish up the last few miles together! These last few weeks have been tough, with high altitude, hard weather, and no where we can afford to sleep. Don't worry, We get it all figured out.... eventually!

Join us as we talk about some of our highs on trail: The highest point on the CDT, some lovely hangouts with off trail pals, hiker 4th of July (which is also coincidentally the 4th of July), and a luxurious stay on our bartender's lawn. We also transform from stinky no good dirty hikers, to stinky no good dirty celebrities as Steamboat Springs embraces us with open arms. There are also some lows on this episode, even if they aren't to be found on the trail in Colorado. Learn about the tough stretches and the wear and tear of 5 weeks at altitude. We finally lull our dear pal Crazy Eyes to sleep before we say goodbye to a special someone. Turn on, tune in, and WALK•ALONG!

This week, our Counselors travel from Lordsburg, New Mexico to Silver City and traverse the mighty Gila River. Meanwhile, they discuss the origin of Wizard Spoon and PDF’s new trail names, tasty in-town treats, and hang out with a fellow CDT 2021 Thru-Hiker, Joey “Machine” Leen.

As the hikers discuss the unusual terrain of the Gila River region in New Mexico, they also recount stories of some of their more unique encounters with its people. A late night dip in a hot-spring leads to an unexpected run-in with delicious results.

As our counselors continue through New Mexico and beyond, we’re glad to have you with us this season! The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 4: Are You Gonna Finish That? - New Mexico Border to Lordsburg

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 4: Are You Gonna Finish That? - New Mexico Border to Lordsburg

Welcome to week four of The Camp Walk-Along Wire! Reminder: first-year campers are NOT to be used as shields in the annual dodge-ball tournament this weekend.

Episode four catches up with our counselors after their first week on the Continental Divide Trail! As they catch their breath in Lordsburg, they recap their favorite snacks, most challenging injuries, and their daily mileage thus far.

Camp Counselor Marky helps us get into a New Mexico state of mind by sharing some state facts. Anything from the state guitar to the state aircraft is up for grabs!

Meanwhile, in true hiker fashion, Camp Counselor Dalto covers some bumps, scrapes, and injuries our counselors have encountered as they adjust to life on the trail. Nobody said it would be easy!

To cap things off, Camp Director Bison helps introduce a camper question on the proper equipment for a long-term hike. Ever wondered how thru-hikers pick their kit? Let’s find out together!

As our counselors continue through New Mexico and beyond, we’re glad to have you with us this season! The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 3: Never Quit On A Bad Day

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 3: Never Quit On A Bad Day

Welcome to week three of The Camp Walk•Along Wire! Reminder: new campers are not to be tied to the tetherball poles.

Episode three features our counselors on the road to the southern terminus of the Continental Divide Trail in New Mexico. As they contemplate the start of their journey, they discuss dares provided by their friends back home and the possibilities and expectations associated with their hike.

Here at camp we love to laugh, but Camp Director Bison introduces some of the more serious ground rules and communication challenges that go along with any long distance hike. These include whether or not to hike together, what happens if someone loses their way on the trail, and what to do if a hiking partner is contemplating ending their hike early.

Meanwhile, on a more hygienic note, Camp Counselor Marky shows off the Culo Clean - a backcountry bidet that all 3 of our counselors can’t wait to try out. Comfort and cleanliness are essential on any hike, and trust us, we’ll give you a thorough review.

It’s not all doom, gloom, and bathroom - thankfully. Camp Counselor Dalto introduces a game of Over / Under, in which the three gamble their pride on various predictions associated with their hike. Play along at home!

Finally, we close our camp session today with some journal entries recorded by the camp staff in the days leading up to their hike. It’s a rare opportunity to hear how a hiker feels before departing on the adventure of a lifetime. Don’t miss this one.

As our counselors take their first steps on the trail, we’re glad to have you with us this season! If you have any questions for our campers, send them our way at campwalkalong@gmail.com or hit us up @campwalkalong on instagram. If your question is featured on air, we’ll reach out to make sure you receive an official Camp Walk•Along sticker.

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 2: It's Just One Foot In Front Of The Other - Interview with Dixie of Homemade Wanderlust

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 2: It's Just One Foot In Front Of The Other - Interview with Dixie of Homemade Wanderlust

Welcome to week two of The Camp Walk•Along Wire! Did you try the sloppy joes in the cafeteria?

We cap things off this episode with an introduction to our special guest Camp Counselor Dixie from Homemade Wanderlust. Dixie and Bison met on the Appalachian Trail in 2015 and since then Dixie has completed the Triple Crown of US long distance hiking trails, also including the Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail.

Dixie walks our counselors through her hiking journey, including her childhood love of the outdoors and the chance encounter which pushed her to start the Appalachian Trail. Along the way, she discusses the pros and cons of choosing the Continental Divide Trail as a first thru-hike and some of her favorite memories from her adventures.

Our Counselors use this opportunity to get Dixie’s sage wisdom on topics like gear preferences in extreme weather, the best way to spend a “zero day” during your thru-hike, and the ideal playlist to help you climb a mountain.

Knowledge is often a communal resource in long distance hiking, and Camp Walk•Along was very excited to have the opportunity to learn from Dixie’s experience. For decades, hikers have given talks, written articles, and now often make videos in an effort to educate and share their experience along these long-distance trails. The Homemade Wanderlust community has grown far and wide on Facebook, Youtube, and beyond -  we encourage you to follow along with Dixie’s continued outdoor pursuits.

To end the episode, Dixie joins our counselors for a hiking themed “what if” question, as everyone considers who their ideal hiking partner would be… alive, dead, or fictional!

As our counselors work their way to the New Mexico border, we’re glad to have you with us this season! If you have any questions for our campers, send them our way at campwalkalong@gmail.com or hit us up at campwalkalong on instagram. If your question is featured on air, we’ll reach out to make sure you receive an official Camp Walk•Along sticker.

The Camp Walk•Along Wire will be back next week, as our counselors take New Mexico by storm. Don’t touch that dial, campers! We’re going on a walk - wanna walk•along?

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 1: Summer Camp Is What You Make It

The Camp Walk•Along Wire Episode 1: Summer Camp Is What You Make It

Welcome to Camp Walk•Along! Your bunk is over there.

We start things off this camp season with some introductions to our Camp Director Bison, as well as Camp Counselors Marky and Dalto. Our intrepid staffers begin by sharing their reflections on their childhood experiences with summer camps and how the freedom of youth has inspired them as adults.

This year, our counselors are attempting to hike the Continental Divide Trail, across the United States of America from the Mexico to Canada borders, via New Mexico to Montana. The trail stretches some 3,100 miles and also includes portions of Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho.

As they dig into the details of their hike, our counselors break down their approach to water gathering on the trail (spoiler alert, it’s kind of gross), the “choose your own adventure” aspects of the CDT, and the genesis of their plans to do a thru-hike in 2021.

Attempting a thru-hike is a massive undertaking. For this reason, the counselors discuss their personal training regiments over the past year. They also touch on the impact of a thru-hike on their families, their personal fears, and the moments they are most excited for along the trail. Camp Director Bison even shares the moment he nearly quit on his 2015 Appalachian Trail Thru-hike… juicy stuff!

Our counselors end the episode by reflecting on their personal goals for their thru-hike, highlighting the long term growth they are seeking from their very, very long walk.

We’re super excited to have you with us for camp this season! If you have any questions for our campers, send them our way at
campwalkalong@gmail.com or hit us up @campwalkalong on instagram. If your question is featured on air, we’ll reach out to make sure you receive an official Camp Walk-Along sticker.

The Camp Walk-Along Wire will be back next week with more tales of trail prep, so don’t touch that dial, campers! We’re going on a walk... wanna walk•along?
