Episode 200: The Underdog Spirit - Inspired by Seabiscuit and Canadian Heroes

Episode 200: The Underdog Spirit - Inspired by Seabiscuit and Canadian Heroes

Thank you as we reach our 200th episode on the Canadian Podcast, as we step into 2024, I'm thrilled to delve into the inspiring legacy of Seabiscuit, the legendary underdog racehorse from America's Great Depression era.

What makes this episode special is how it draws a unique parallel between Seabiscuit’s story and the enduring spirit of Canadian resilience, highlighting the Canadian connection through his jockey, Red Pollard.

Seabiscuit's improbable rise to stardom, especially focusing on his partnership with Canadian-born jockey Red Pollard. Their journey together is a testament to the underdog theme. Their most notable victory, against War Admiral in the 1938 Pimlico Special, exemplifies the triumph of the underdog spirit, a theme that resonates deeply with me.

Today and everyday, we must remember to celebrate the often quiet but significant lives of Canadian veterans, military personnel, first responders, and entrepreneurs. Their stories of overcoming adversity, often unsung, echo the tales of Seabiscuit and Pollard, underscoring shared themes of resilience, determination, and belief.

Reflecting on the past year's challenges, we must draw inspiration from Canadian icons like Leonard Cohen and Donovan Bailey. Their stories of late success and Olympic glory reinforce the message that it’s never too late to achieve dreams. True success, I believe, comes from perseverance and grit.

Thank you to our guests, our listeners!

As 2024 begins, I encourage everyone to embrace this spirit. Inspired by Seabiscuit and Red Pollard, and countless Canadian heroes, we’re reminded that with teamwork, courage, and resilience, no challenge is too great.

This 200th episode of CanadianPodcast is not just a celebration of a significant milestone. It's a beacon of inspiration, urging us all to carry forward the underdog spirit into the new year and beyond.

Thank you,

Episode 180 | Resilience and Sheer Will to Survive after being Mauled by a Grizzly Bear with Jeremy Evans

Episode 180 | Resilience and Sheer Will to Survive after being Mauled by a Grizzly Bear with Jeremy Evans

Jeremy Evans who shares his inspiring survival story set in the remote backcountry of the Canadian Rockies with ZAK of the Canadian Podcast in this episode.

In August 2017, 32-year-old Jeremy Evans endured multiple ferocious attacks by a protective female grizzly bear while hunting in the Alberta wilderness.  Jeremy’s injuries were massive, his scalp and face destroyed, an eye and his jaw dangling down. The tendons on one leg had been fully severed during the mauling.

His hands were damaged where he had physically fought the bear. It was more than a dozen kilometres to where he had parked his truck in darkness early that morning and absolutely no one was near. Thoughts of his wife and their eight-month-old daughter consumed Jeremy as he stumbled and crawled for hours back to his truck, before driving himself several kilometres to a backcountry lodge for help.

All the while, Jeremy thought of his young family and the upcoming sixth wedding anniversary that he feared he might never be able to celebrate.

Mauled carefully details what happened deep in an Alberta forest where few modern humans tread. Jeremy’s miraculous recovery and life lessons learned when so close to death show that human determination can defy the greatest of odds, and that setting small goals along the road to recovery can lead to remarkable achievements. Despite the traumatic stress the encounter produced,

Jeremy holds no animosity toward the bear and still enjoys spending time in the backcountry. To him the grizzly was doing what the best parents do: protect their young.

Episode 173 | Tier 1 JTF2 Sniper/Assaulter on Art of Adversity, Blockchains and Human Optimization with Jeff Depatie

Jeff Depatie served 15 years in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), starting in the airborne infantry, then being accepted into Canada’s elite special forces unit, Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), as an assaulter and sniper.

After multiple deployments, Depatie left the military and formed the Special Forces Experience (SFE), a community made of a collective of individuals rooted in the belief that challenge and adversity can be a springboard for growth in all aspects of life.

His vision is to identify superior non-military men and bring them together to see if they collectively can solve some of the world’s biggest issues from the ground up.

“Being a tier one operator, I’ve had to make decisions and carry out policy that may not have been the popular choices but certainly what I believed to be the necessary choices. While I don’t believe all decisions our governments make are morally correct, I know I’ve carried out unpopular missions for the greater good – the tough ones. The ones you don’t hear about. The debate of what makes a man a ‘good man’ is certainly one of morality. And since morality is tied to differing individual values, I define him as one who has the far-sightedness to serve the greater good of humanity on a micro and macro scale and not one that chooses to serve the popular decision.”

Depatie is committed to maintaining peak physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual shape – in addition to constantly improving the courage it takes to will that strength. For years, he’s been building his skills in the following crafts:

Depatie has spent years of his life in deserts, jungles, extreme cold, and other hardly inhabitable geographies. He also co-founded Meraki Collective, a coworking space designed to help revitalize a failing small town in Ontario. He has been a student and a seeker of adventure and human possibility. In the words of Master Yoda, “failure the greatest teacher there is.”

Episode 161 | The Importance of Building a Group through the Love of Music with Orchard Sky Band

If you think something seems familiar about Orchard Sky, you’re not wrong. However, the Western Canadian trio has put its previous identity as The Orchard firmly in the past and is excited to debut its dynamic new Country sound.

When the group’s long-time musical collaborators Mitch Smith and Andreas Wegner were in search of a new lead vocalist, they struck gold in landing two-time Western Canadian Music Award winner Krystle Dos Santos. Along with her stunningly soulful voice, she brings to Orchard Sky a powerful stage presence that has also been displayed in productions of Dreamgirls, and The Chelsea Hotel: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen,

Orchard Sky’s debut single, “Canadian Party Song”—which sounds as raucous as the title suggests—was released June 24 through Royalty Records, with the equally exciting tracks “Flashbang” and “Honest” from the band’s forthcoming EP.

With it, Orchard Sky is poised to become the next major Country export from western Canada, following the trail blazed by the many artists from that province who have come before them. For Orchard Sky, the sky is the limit.

Episode 160 | Finding the Passion in Life and How they Don't Make Em Like that Anymore with Jason Blaine

Episode 160 | Finding the Passion in Life and How they Don't Make Em Like that Anymore with Jason Blaine

At the root of it all, Jason Blaine was born to sing, write and entertain. His love for country music has taken him to  the forefront of the Canadian music scene where he has remained for over a decade. With over 12 Top 10 singles in  Canada including hits such as “Country Side” and “Friends of Mine”, he has also become a craftsmen of hits for  other people including Chris Jansen, Parmalee, Petric and Madeline Merlo and others.

Originally from Pembroke, Ontario, Blaine moved to Nashville in the fall of 2006 with his wife Amy and their  three-month-old baby girl. He burst onto the scene in a big way in 2007 with his first #1 hit single “Rock In My  Boot” which led to multiple CCMA nominations and paved the way for a string of hit singles and major festival  appearances across the country.

Perhaps the biggest game changer came in 2012 when he released the biographical “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like  That Anymore”, which was written for his grandfather. The song was one of his biggest hits connecting with fans of  all generations and eventually went on to win CCMA Single of the Year that same year.
In between releasing hit songs and co-headling tours with Tebey, Chad Brownlee and Deric Ruttan, Blaine also  found time to start up his annual Jason Blaine Celebrity Charity Golf Classic. Over the past five years, fellow artists  and hockey legends ranging from Dallas Smith, Tim Hicks, and Gord Bamford, to Doug Gilmour and Bryan Murray  have all contributed to helping raise over $500,000 for various hometown charities in Pembroke.

Now, a multiple CCMA, SOCAN & CMAO award winner with over 20+ radio hits, six full length albums, over 12 million digital streams, and Jason still feels like he’s just getting started. Writing full time within Nashville’s  publishing community, Jason resides in Hendersonville, Tennessee with his wife Amy and their four children.
This past summer the next chapter began as he began work on his brand new album, which was produced by Jay Tooke. The project breathes new life while lending itself to what Jason does best;  great country music performed by one of Canada’s most distinctive voices, telling stories of home, love, and nights  on the town. As a craftsmen of songs, Jason found and wrote songs for the project which embody his artistry and  move him into the next season of his career.

Episode 157 | How we can Benefit from Life through each other’s Experiences with Seb Lavoie

Sebastien Lavoie was a police officer with the RCMP for over 20 years. Born and raised in Quebec, Seb spent a few years in the Canadian Armed Forces, pre-9/11, before joining the national police force. Seb's career revolved around the Mounties' specialized and elite units: first as an in flight safety officer (air marshal) before moving on to be a full time member of the BC Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team (ERT) both as a breacher and later as a team leader. He retired in 2021 as the Divisional Sergeant Major for “E” Division (British Columbia), the RCMP’s largest division. Seb was a devoted police officer.
He was committed to his craft and the maintenance of not only his high personal standards, but also elevating the standards of the officers that worked around him. Today he brings that same pursuit of excellence to consulting. He is the CEO of Raven Strategic Inc., which provides leadership and performance training as well as security related services.
