Episode 22: Gender Roles- A Man's Perspective

Episode 22: Gender Roles- A Man's Perspective

Is it a Man’s World or a Woman’s World? Do you believe in traditional roles in relationships? Should women be submissive to their man? What is being submissive?   When it comes to relationships, a lot of people have a set idea of what gender roles should be. Quite often, we assume that men should take the lead and make all of the big decisions, while women are more inclined to operate in the shadows. While tradition can lead to some success within relationships, there is no denying that these outdated gender norms in relationships are holding us back in many ways. It has a tremendous impact on sex, love, religion, marriage, dating, finance, and households.  Video Credits: Klean Shots Photography

Episode 18: "The Homecoming Hook-Up"

Episode 18: "The Homecoming Hook-Up"

Have you ever had a “Homecoming Hook-up”? Are you looking for a hook-up or a Relationship? Do you have any Homecoming Rituals?

What does college homecoming mean? The Cambridge Dictionary defines homecoming as “a celebration at school or college, usually including a dance and a football game, when people who were students there at an earlier time can return to visit” (dictionary.cambridge.org). This is particularly true of American university culture and Historically Black College and Universities.

The tradition of Homecoming has its origin in alumni football games held at colleges and universities since the 19th century. It appears to be the first homecoming-like event which was centered on a parade and a football game and celebrated as an annual event. While the games and reunion activities are a hit, hooking up with an old homecoming fling or boo seems to be a pandora's box that some enthusiastically embrace and some not so much.

What other way to capture the narrative, CCC engages their beloved HBCU alumni during homecoming with a Live Interactive Podcast "The Homecoming Hook-Up". The topic gets pretty hot and steamy and ignites memories long forgotten.

Episode 17: Monogamy vs. Polyamory: Which is right for you?

Episode 17: Monogamy vs. Polyamory: Which is right for you?

The idea of remaining monogamous at a time when the divorce rate is at an all-time high and many people are viewing marriage as an archaic institution is becoming less and less likely. Many millennials don’t believe in the restrictions of monogamy, saying the idea is outdated and doesn’t fit in the new cultural landscape.  Polyamorous relationships could be a wave of the future.

Polyamory is defined as the practice of or desire for intimate relationships with more than one partner, with the knowledge of all partners. It has been described as “consensual, ethical, and responsible non-monogamy.”

The Crew engages in a trending topic asking all the questions you want to know about Poly Life from a special guest who has her own personal preference. Tap in to hear the convo:

Episode 14: The Mystery of Love Languages

Episode 14: The Mystery of Love Languages

CCC engages in an in-depth conversation and discovers what their best love language is with their perspective zodiac sign and finds it to be exciting and somewhat of a mystery. A person’s astrology sign can reveal much more than just the more favorable characteristics.  It can help make relationships last longer and also help you avoid inappropriate relationships. It has been reported that learning about the five love languages can change one personally and relationally in a positive direction.

THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES INCLUDE: 1 – WORDS OF AFFIRMATION.

Giving and receiving words of praise are vital. It is essential that you hear the words “I love you.” Adversely, insults and harsh language leaves you shattered and are rarely forgotten.

2 – ACTS OF SERVICE.

The perfect love relationship is about what you do, not what you say. Anyone that lends a helping hand is highly thought of. Magic words to your ears are, “What can I do to help?”

3 – RECEIVING GIFTS

You show that you really care for someone by showering them with a special gift. You also like receiving gifts. You thrive on loving, thoughtfulness, and the whole endeavor of a special gift. A forgotten birthday or anniversary is unforgivable!

4 – QUALITY TIME

You feel loved when someone gives you their undivided attention. That means the cell phone and TV is off, fork and spoon are on the table, and work is put on hold. You will also do the same for a loved one.

5 – PHYSICAL TOUCH

You are very “touchy.” You have a strong need to give and receive hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and physical intimacy. Being there and staying accessible is essential. Abuse or neglect is unacceptable and unforgivable. Learning and applying the key language may improve and strengthen your relationship.

Episode 11: "I Can't Breathe" Series Part I: We Are Tired of Dying!

With the tragic murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and most recently Rayshard Brooks, we wanted to create a space to discuss how we truly feel. How we felt the day we watched the heartbreaking video of George Floyd's life being taken away from him in front of the world with no remorse from the police officer. We're SICK & TIRED of being SICK & TIRED! What can we do? How can we get involved? How can we take action? Well, it first starts with a conversation, then pulling our resources together and always supporting one another. We invited two very important special guests to the conversation so we can gain some insights from Law Enforcement with Jennifer Maxie and the perspective from an attorney, Je' Nita Lane. After having this conversation with your Crew, your family, your colleagues...think about what's next and how you're going to take action to make a change!

Episode 9: What Makes your CREW #SquadGoals?

Crew or Squad is a term of endearment for a group of friends. #SquadGoals is more like a milestone to be or accomplished. It's an aspirational term that means your circle or crew motivates you beyond yourself to be a better friend, mother, sister, entrepreneur, wife, significant other, etc. The beauty of your crew taking it to the next level, #SquadGoals lies within the "good, bad and ugly". Our Crew has over 30 years of friendship and still standing strong. This podcast will explore the "Good, Bad and Ugly" of our friendship over the years. We will discuss how we all met, the "Girl Code", How we have maintained our bond over the years? What trials and tribulations tested the friendship? Episode 8: W.T.H. Am I Doing- Single and Dating at 40ish?

Episode 8: W.T.H. Am I Doing- Single and Dating at 40ish?

Are you still single and over 40?  Yes, this episode is for you! Is the thrill gone? Is it better at 40? Why is my status always "It's Complicated"? Should I date outside of my race? Is online dating less pretentious? Should I practice celibacy? Does sex complicate dating at 40? .............................

Dating typically ceases at approximately 25 to 27 years of age. By the age of 27, you are several years removed from college, likely in a solid job, all those obligatory one-night-stands are out of the way, and you've had enough time to settle down and find "the one." The idea of dating after 40 simply didn't exist.

That's quite the contrary nowadays, divorce rates are up, more women over 40 are in leadership roles pursuing advanced education and career, primary breadwinners of their households and are simply not easy to commit. This notion has changed the whole dating game.  When seeking a new mate, you have more responsibilities and things that demand your attention at this stage than when you were in college or just graduating.

With this, individuals dating in their 40's have to practice a much more non-traditional, creative approach. Online dating, celibacy, abstaining, interracial dating, pre-marital sex, polygamy are all notions to ponder while dating in your 40's. This final 2019 episode will highlight all the aforementioned from a diverse group of women who have experienced being single, single parenting, widowed, married, divorced, dating in their 40's, never been married at 40  and more. Grab your crew, cocktails and join the conversation!

Episode 7: Is a 4.0 at an H.B.C.U. equivalent to a 4.0 at an P.W.I?

Episode 7: Is a 4.0 at an H.B.C.U. equivalent to a 4.0 at an P.W.I?

Historically, African Americans, by law, were not allowed to enroll in institutions we now know as predominantly white institutions. Thus, they had to create their own institutions. Many decades later, the constant fight and need to bring awareness still exists. The debate about Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) and Predominately White Institutions (PWI) are becoming more talked about and calling for a much-needed conversation about which type of institution a black student should attend and is one better than the other. Conversations and Cocktails with the Crew podcast take a look at their personal experiences that include: the reason for choosing an HBCU, college experience, life after college and the importance of attending an H.B.C.U.   According to the 2018 Study Breaks, "Black students who attend HBCU's feel that black students who attend PWI's aren’t getting a true “black experience” and are sellouts." The Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest HBCU in the United States, founded in 1837. This institution lead the way aspiring black students with a safe, comfortable and healthily familiar place to attain the highest level of education possible. Though vastly underfunded, black institutions of higher education continue to produce some of the highest numbers of black pharmacists, Ph.D.’s and scientists. However, shortly thereafter, black people were allowed at PWI’s in underrepresented numbers and continue to make up a very small percentage of PWI’s. On the contrary, due to the ease of access into HBCU’s from lower admission requirements and test scores, black students at PWI’s believe their curriculum is far more rigorous than HBCU’s, thus making their degrees of higher value. In addition, they believe that PWI’s makes them more acclimated to “the real world” and in corporate settings, which see white people as the racial majority. There’s truth in both arguments but the division it has caused within the black community makes the argument completely pointless. Although many wish to debate on whose educational experience is more valuable or culturally relevant, HBCUs have played and continues to play an integral role in the social, educational, political and economic development of the black community.   Grab your college crew, cocktails and let's talk?

Episode 5: Color-ism in 2019, The Paper Bag Test

Episode 5: Color-ism in 2019, The Paper Bag Test

In his 1996 book The Future of the Race, Henry Louis Gates Jr., the prominent Harvard historian, described his introduction to this practice as an undergraduate student at Yale in the late 1960's. According to Gates, "Some of the brothers who came from New Orleans held a bag party. A bag party was a New Orleans custom wherein a brown paper bag was stuck on the door. Anyone darker than the bag was denied entrance. That was one cultural legacy that would be put to rest in a hurry-we all made sure of that. But, it was replaced by an opposite test whereby those who were deemed "not black enough' ideologically were to be shunned. I was not sure this was an improvement."   Moving sixty years forward, Color-ism still exists. R&B singer Chris Brown has been called a “colorist” after the singer defended problematic lyrics from his new song, “Need a Stack,” which is from his newly released album, Indigo. The track, which features Lil' Wayne and Joyner Lucas, contains the lyrics, “Only wanna f**k the black b**ches with the nice hair.”  Why use the bag as a barometer? Because it was believed to be midway between white and black hues. Spike Lee's movie School Daze (1988) is often credited with creating a national dialogue about color-ism in African American communities. In this movie, set at an all-black college, there is a rivalry between the light-skinned, straight hair girls from the Gamma Ray sorority, and the dark-skinned Independents with short hair or Afro. It is noteworthy that the girls of the fictional Gamma Ray sorority had to be "paper-bag light." Just like in the real world, the light-skinned girls are more likely to be (or become) affluent. The movie did not create the dialogue-blacks have been discussing, debating, and dialoguing about color-ism since slavery-but it did add fuel and some context to the dialogue. This episode will keep the flame burning as we discuss our individual experiences with Colorism. Join the CCC dialogue, we would love to hear your feedback.
