An excellent trainer and avid participant in Schutzhund and AKC obedience, Shade has been dabbling in dog training since she was a young girl, and worked many jobs to gain experience in the field, including as a kennel manager, a veterinary technician, and groomer, as well as taking continuing education courses. Episode 25: Learning About Herding with MacRae Sheepdogs
Today's episode is all about sheep herding, and we're talking about this sport with two legends - Patricia and Alasdair MacRae of MacRae Sheepdogs. We talk about how herding started, what it looks like in real life on the farms of Scotland, and what US trials are all about.
More about Patricia and Alasdair:
Alasdair has been around border collies for nearly his whole life, growing up on a farm in Scotland. Alasdair’s time with his dogs has included trick training, true herding as a shepherd at 18 years old, and when his interest was piqued, he learned to herd with dogs who were otherwise rejected by other farmers and handlers in Great Britain. His early work with these dogs helped him learn to adapt his training to each individual dog, bringing out every last bit of their potential. Alasdair has competed on national and international stages in herding and is a 14 time US National Champion.
Patricia is an amazing herding trainer and competitor, with high placements at the US Nationals, including winning the US National right here in the state of Oregon! Together with Alasdair, Macrae Way Online Sheepdog Training Courses was launched in 2014 to take their intuitive, positive training methodology and make it available to handlers worldwide. In 2018, they launched the MacRae Way Academy, which provides a membership platform to enhance their ability to share their knowledge with handlers and their dogs.

Guest Sara Brueske (she/her) has been training dogs since she was a young child, and has experienced a large variety of breeds and sports during that time. After graduating as a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner in 2011, she jumped into the professional dog training world. In 2014, Sara was hired by Purina as a dog trainer to perform dog sport shows at Purina Farms in Grey Summit, Missouri. Her number of dogs quickly grew to fill the need of the job. Currently she has ten dogs of varying breeds and origins including a boston terrier mix, several Australian koolies and Belgian Malinois. Sara and her dogs work to convince people to do more with their dogs, teach about responsible pet ownership and to get involved in the dog sport community.
After six years working as a full-time performer, Sara now teaches on the topic of dog sports full time. While disc dog and tricks are some of her specialities, she also is passionate about creating clear communication between handlers and their dogs as well as teaching how to build a solid foundation for any sport. Currently, Sara trains in the sports of disc dog, agility, IGP, mondioring, scentwork and dock diving as well as being a trick dog enthusiast. She actively competes in agility, mondioring, dock diving and is planning on trialing in scentwork soon.

Elissa recently had a litter of rat terrier puppies, and now that they've headed home, we're reflecting on the process and experience that she had. As a first time breeder, Elissa isn't an expert breeder - but she can certainly share what her experience was like. We discussed many topics, resources, and just for fun items, so check out these resources below:
Some inspiration for producing a healthy of puppies came in part from the Functional Dog Collaborative: Supporting the ethical breeding of healthy, behaviorally sound dogs.Health testing information: The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) was founded as a private, not-for-profit foundation in 1966 by John M. Olin, a well-known inventor, industrialist, philanthropist, conservationist, and sportsman. OFA maintains a database for a variety of health testing of dogs and Tilly had her hips, elbows, patella's, eyes and heart tested and logged through OFA before she was bred.
Our cover photo was provided by Nina Sage Photography! Her skills in puppy photography were so appreciated by Elissa and her new puppy owners.
There are many resources for good breeding information, including Avidog and Puppy Culture. We highly recommend utilizing these resources if you're thinking about your own litter.
Elissa utilized the help of Dr. Lopate at Reproductive Revolutions in Wilsonville, Oregon.

They live in Olympia, Washington, but compete across the country.
Laurel’s kennel, Jammin Whippets, is an AKC Breeder of Merit that breeds for sport and to meet the Whippet standard, which describes a racing and rabbit coursing hound. She believes in breeding towards that goal - and to maintain a dog that can excel at the job it was created to do; race and hunt rabbits, and look beautiful doing it while continuing to be fabulous, healthy pets. Her dog, Sounders, is the world record holder in several dock dog categories, most recently, he achieved the Dock Dog World Record Outdoor Speed Retrieve for the second time, and Dock Dog World Record Outdoor Big Air with a jump of 32'02" and his record with North America Diving Dog and the Guinness World Record is 36' 2".
