Michael Quan - Financially Alert

Michael Quan - Financially Alert

On board today is Michael Quan, author of the book The Fire Planner, and the man behind the popular Financially Alert blog and the Breakthrough Millionaire Podcast. Michael reached FIRE in his early thirties and It was actually only after he sold his IT company to a larger provider and inadvertently found himself back in a nine-to-five corporate job that he decided he was going to pull the pin and FIRE at age 36, which is pretty impressive.

Post FIRE, these days, Michael is a stay-at-home dad in sunny San Diego. He loves raising his kids, spending time with his wife, and in his downtime, writing, podcasting, and financially coaching his students and readers.

Michael's latest project has been setting up and running a real estate investor mastermind group, which he does a couple of times a month.

I really enjoyed my chat with Michael and he had heaps of awesome suggestions for learning resources and inspiration too!

Liz - Meet The Frugalwoods

Liz - Meet The Frugalwoods

Today, I have the absolute pleasure to be chatting to Liz from her awesome blog and amazing book that she wrote, Meet the Frugal Woods! Anyone who's been on the Captain FI blog knows that I'm a big fan of Liz and Nate, the Frugal Woods and they are literally living my dream!

They have an acreage in rural Vermont, which they call the Frugalwoods. There, they're raising their two beautiful daughters and they participate in a whole bunch of wholesome things. They're always gardening, the kids are always in the garden, and it really just looks like an awesome lifestyle.

Liz and her husband started working towards FI in 2014, both 29 at the time. They had white collar office positions and thought they were dream jobs but they realised they didn't actually feel fulfilled. They were forced to re evaluate and started to talk about other ways that they could live their lives.

Something that they really wanted to do was live in nature. They were in Boston and did not feel energised, they wanted to be in the woods.

So they bought a property in rural Vermont in 2016 and have never looked back.

Liz has since enjoyed freelance writing, working one on one with clients doing financial consultations, writing for the Frugalwoods blog and she published the book, Meet the Frugalwoods which has been extremely popular!

This was a bit of a selfish interview as I wanted as much info as possible on Liz's homestead life so I can make this a reality for myself!

Phil Muscatello - Shares for Beginners

Phil Muscatello - Shares for Beginners

On board today is Phil Muscatello, the host and producer of the awesome podcasts, Shares for Beginners, Stocks for Beginners, ETFs for Beginners and Talking Companies.

Phil is not from a finance background, but he wants to learn more about becoming a better investor. So he hopes that his listeners come along for the ride and don't make the same mistakes that he has.

Phil actually has degrees in Media Production and Literary Studies. He played in some awesome, psychedelic, heavy rock cabaret bands in Sydney during the 80s, before moving into a more stable career in radio, working at the ABC, and Triple J.

Phil describes himself as a seventies punk boomer, he loves playing guitar, ocean swimming, cycling, going to the gym, and anything to do with technology.

He grew up in Sydney, has always been interested in music, playing guitar, loves literature, arts and is an avid reader.

He went to UTS in Sydney and became a little bit of a political radical. After leaving university with a media degree, there was a recession and a lot of depair, as well as very limited jobs in media, so he ended up driving taxis for a few years before starting a career in radio, moving into commercial radio and then started his own recording studio.

He recorded one of the first podcasts in Australia, setting up his own server and fast forward to today, is still loving the podcasting!

Phil was incredibly interesting and had a thing or two to teach me too!

Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung - Millennial Revolution

Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung - Millennial Revolution

On board today is Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung from Canada, also known from their popular blog, Millennial Revolution. Here's a quote from our guests, 'Money is the most important thing in the world'. Maybe a bit of a controversial take.

Whilst having money is certainly no guarantee of happiness, poverty is sure to make you miserable, and no one knows this better than Kristy, who has seen both ends of the wealth spectrum. Despite growing up in poverty and, at one point, living with her family on 44 cents a day, Kristy Shen, along with her husband Bryce Leung, went on to become self made millionaires at the ripe old age of 31 and 32, going on to retire only a few years later.

Now, 40 and 41 Kristy and Bryce have spent the past decade traveling, exploring new cultures, spending time with family and friends, helping others succeed with their financial goals, and expressing their creativity as authors and publishers, both in personal finance, but also, interestingly, with children's books.

How did they do it? Well, as students, analyzing potential career paths, they weighed up training costs, effort, and future salaries to work out their optimum return on investment, and the pair both very mindfully chose to work in the developing field of software engineering.

Kristy's heritage taught her to avoid debt at all costs, and the importance of a high savings rate. Kristy and Bryce took it to the next level, saving and investing on average 80 percent of their large software engineer incomes over their nine-year working careers. In 2015, they pulled the plug.

They retired from their engineering jobs to FIRE and travel the world together. They blog at Millennial Revolution, and have published the book, Quit like a Millionaire, which I found particularly helpful and inspiring on my journey to FIRE.

They believe that money is the most important tool we have to improve our quality of life. Kristy and Bryce swear by the numbers which led them to financial freedom and enabled them to pursue their passions for travel, writing, and helping others.

Jump on board, this one's a long one but Kristy and Bryce were just so inspiring to chat to!

Louise Howard - The Executive

Louise Howard - The Executive

On board today is Louise Howard, a Sydney-based executive who I met through the FIRE community. Louise is an incredibly talented, dedicated and successful person who has held executive roles in infrastructure projects in the public sector, as well as management and consulting in the private sector.

She recently decided to take a break from her government job and launched her own advisory business called Louise Howard Advisory, where she advises and speaks publicly, all over the world on topics such as infrastructure, development, career mentoring and leadership.

Louise is from a big Italian family and learned some solid financial lessons from her parents who provided a wonderful start for her and her siblings.

Louise lives in a high cost of living area in Sydney, but is a mean negotiator when it comes to her salary, and is passionate about pay equality for women in the workforce.

Louise is 5 years from her FAT Fire goal, has made some very smart money and investing decisions along the way and it was awesome to catch up with her again!

Dev Raga - My Millennial Money Professional

Dev Raga - My Millennial Money Professional

On board today is Dev Raga, a practicing clinician from Melbourne with a passion for personal finance. Dev is a fellow podcaster and currently hosts the My Millennial Money Professional Podcast, which is a podcast that makes money concepts simple for busy professionals.

Dev began podcasting because he wanted to leave a blueprint for his children and family in the rare event that he wasn't around to explain the basics of personal finance and investing.

He's a husband, father, doctor, podcaster and he's a first generation immigrant. His parents migrated here in the early nineties from India and Dev grew up in Adelaide actually, went to medical school and then moved to Melbourne.

Dev is a millennial and learned from his parents at a very early age, that while money was not the most important thing, that it is very important.

Dev wants to keep working in the medical field, even after reaching FI and continues to enjoy interviewing many interesting professionals through his podcast.

Dev has some very useful viewpoints to share with us, so strap in, this one will get you thinking!

Making Sense of Cents - Michelle

Making Sense of Cents - Michelle

On board today is Michelle from Making Sense of Cents. Michelle reached financial independence through her online businesses and has enjoyed living a variety of interesting lifestyles post FI, including, but not limited to van life.

Now, Michelle and her family even live part-time on a sailboat, and get to travel the world via the seven seas, which is pretty bloody cool. Michelle used to work as a financial analyst and documented her journey towards FI through her blog, Making Sense of Cents, which she started in 2011, so her first series of blogs was about paying off nearly $40k worth of student loans in just half a year, which is a pretty mind-boggling accomplishment in itself.

Michelle went on to write tips and insights about personal finance, budgeting, and how she was able to make more money which helped her to pay down these debts so quickly, and then she was able to turn this cash firehose into building her wealth.

Her blog became incredibly popular, and fast forward to today, Michelle's website has reached over 20 million readers, regularly goes out to over 300, 000 subscribers and has earned her a tidy USD $5 million in revenue!

Michelle has actually meticulously documented this income showing the various income streams through areas such as advertising, sponsored posts, affiliate marketing and selling her own digital products and courses.

It's pretty awesome. And it's a transparency that you don't often see online.

Jump on board, I learned a lot from Michelle!

The Fioneers - Jess & Corey

The Fioneers - Jess & Corey

On board today are Jess and Corey, better known online as The Fioneers.

Jess and Corey both spent the majority of their careers working in mission driven non-profit organizations.

But in 2018, Jess experienced really bad burnout, which led to some anxiety and really needing to take a step back. So Jess had a six month career break to really focus on her mental health, returning the following year to part-time work. This gave her time to rest, reset, focus, and plan.

When researching and planning out her future career and finances, she discovered that they'd actually already reached coast FI, so decided to only continue working part-time and enjoy creative and relaxing hobbies on her time off, such as blogging.

In 2020, Jess launched her own business, Design A Life You'd Love, which went really well, and only a year later, she was able to leave her job to work full time on the business. Now, after purchasing and building out a camper van last year, Jess and Corey now travel the USA, living a location independent lifestyle.

It was a really interesting, 3 way chat today, learning about their attitudes towards FIRE and about designing a life you don't need to retire from.

Doc G - Jordan Grumet - Earn and Invest Podcast

Doc G - Jordan Grumet - Earn and Invest Podcast

On board today is Dr. Jordan Grumet, better known as Doc G from the DiverseFI blog and the host of the incredibly popular Earn and Invest podcast, but he's also the author of the blog, In My Humble Opinion.

Doc G specializes in palliative care and despite reaching FI continues to work in the hospice part-time where he compassionately helps people through the final stages of their lives.

Unlike most doctors I know, Doc G is pretty amazing when it comes to money. He sees it as a tool that we can use to improve our lives and live a more fulfilling life. He even says that becoming a money expert became his second career, and it was incredibly fulfilling to him to help put the veil back around money and help people find their true identity, purpose, and passions in life.

In addition to his award-winning blog and podcast, he has written and published two books with his latest book being titled, 'Taking Stock, a Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, building Wealth, and Living a Regret Free Life.' Doc G has observed that as a community, though we're pretty obsessed with investing, we're probably not interested enough in our own unique purpose, identities and connections. Although he has helped thousands of people transition from life to death, he says, we don't actually have to wait for a death sentence before we start searching for meaning and ask the important questions. He wants to remove the hurdle of good money management so that we can all learn to live well today.

Doc G was incredibly inspiring and forced me to think differently about FI! Jump in!

Corwin - Engineering your FI

On the pod today from Austin, Texas is Corwin, a fellow aerospace engineer and FIRE blogger from 'Engineering your FI' with a Bachelor's, Masters and PhD in aerospace engineering, as well as over a decade of engineering industry experience. He definitely fits the engineering bill, which we often see here in the FIRE community.

Corwin has worked for NASA, and also gained a position at the University of Texas as a researcher, where he still works to this day. He calls personal finance a hobby, he's clearly a very intelligent bloke and with his engineering background, we had a lot in common!

He worked bloody hard to command a high income and has sensibly invested a large portion of it over time, allowing him to reach financial independence at such a young age, and it was awesome to hear about his experience and his journey! Listen on..

Mr Nomad Numbers on Slow Travel

On board the podcast today is Mr Nomad Numbers.

Mr and Mrs Nomad Numbers sold everything they owned and began slow travelling the world. They've documented their travels and their journey on NomadNumbers.com where they blog anonymously and share their travel destinations, itineraries and meticulously document their costs of travel and living.

They came to the conclusion that the cost of slow traveling the world can actually be much cheaper than staying at home and working. They have been able to spend almost 50% less than when they were living in high cost areas such as San Francisco, by taking advantage of geo arbritrage.

Mr and Mrs Nomad Numbers love writing about personal finance, minimalism and their journey to financial independence and are really on a mission to inspire others to look outside of their comfort zone to live a life true to themselves.

Dom - Gen Y Finance Guy

Dom - Gen Y Finance Guy

On board the pod today is Dom who runs the popular blog Gen Y Finance Guy, where Dom's been blogging about his journey to financial independence and posting net wealth updates for the past decade.

Dom is from California, where he lives with his wife and 2 kids. He faced some immense challenges early on in life, growing up below the poverty line, and eventually having to be raised by his grandparents after his parents ended up in jail. Dom refers to this as humble financial beginnings. Dom's grandfather was a business owner and had a huge influence on Dom's finances and outlook on life.

As a result, Dom had a pretty Big Hairy Audacious Goal to reach a net worth of $10 million by age 40. Dom managed to climb the corporate ladder, where he was a CFO for a large company, all while side hustling to build his business and his side income.

His side hustle became his full time software business, and he was able to build his business to exceed his corporate income, eventually selling the business for over $20 million. His share allowed him to reach a fat FIRE goal with a net wealth of over $10 million, so he now enjoys financial freedom, blogging on Gen Y Finance Guy and managing his family's capital part time.

He's a very ambitious guy, loves numbers and math, will be starting his own podcast soon, and our chat was VERY eye opening! Jump on board!

JMoney from Budgets are Sexy

JMoney from Budgets are Sexy

On board the pod today is JMoney from Budgets are Sexy. JMoney is probably one of the most recognizable names, or should that be Mohawks in the fire community. After a somewhat impulsive purchase of a home in his early twenties, J became focused on improving his finances and became inspired by what he read online, causing him to start what eventually came to be the incredibly popular blog, Budgets are Sexy. J became a millionaire in just 10 short years reaching financial independence before the age of 40 and reaching over 30 million readers along the way. As a result, Jay has won many awards, including 12 Industry Plutus awards, including 2012 Financial Blogger of the Year and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jay is also no stranger to online businesses having built, acquired, worked on, or sold dozens of websites over the past 15 years.

Projects J has worked on include his namesake blog Budgets are Sexy, as well as other popular sites such as Rockstar Finance and CoinThrill. JMoney acts as an advisor to the Plutus Foundation, consults for several fintechs, mentors and coaches other bloggers, and, even brokers, and coordinates online business sellouts.

I suppose J and I share a few things in common. We both have ADHD, a passion for money and enjoy dabbling in some online businesses in semi-retirement.

So jump on board, JMoney is full of energy and we had such a fun chat!

Andy Darroch - Independent Financial Advisor

Andy Darroch - Independent Financial Advisor

On board today is Andy Darroch. Andy runs Independent Wealth Advice, an independent financial advice firm that provides fixed upfront fees for a statement of financial advice. He has a degree in accounting and is a CFP. He's also worked in wealth management for over a decade, including at Macquarie Bank and at one of Australia's oldest stockbroking firms, Wilson's Advisory and Stockbroking.
Suffice to say he's got a bit of experience. He also calls himself a self-loathing financial advisor, which I find funny. He has some fairly controversial views on the financial advice industry, not being afraid to call out shitty or unethical products when he sees them.
Having said that, it's Andy's belief that you can still get good financial advice for a fair cost without conflicts of interest - That can have a phenomenal impact on your long-term financial success. Listen in for all the details..

So personally, I used to submit my own tax returns and actually when I was at uni, but I eventually realized that I was actually cutting myself short because there were lots of work related deductions that I was missing out on that I didn't know about. From then on, I made sure I saw a licenced tax accountant. So today on the pod, I've got Mihn who's joining us all the way from Tropical Darwin, who is going talk a little bit about his experience of becoming a tax accountant and some of the things that you should consider when it comes to tax.

Geo-Arbitrage with Amber

I first met Amber when I listened to the Money Madams Podcast. Amber and her co-host Katherine run an awesome podcast, sharing their experience with personal finance and interviewing interesting guests - I was lucky enough to be featured! After chatting to these two very knowledgable people, I knew I wanted to get them on the pod to discuss some areas of the FIRE movement they had first hand experience with - Katherine came on to talk about insurance, and now Amber is here sharing her knowledge with geo-arbitrage.

Lacey Filipich on Life, Money, Mini-retirements and Death

Lacey Filipich on Life, Money, Mini-retirements and Death

I first heard of Lacey after she gave a TEDx talk at the University of Western Australia in 2018 on the concept of mini-retirements, that is, taking regular sabbaticals throughout a career as part of a genuine commitment to work life balance, and I thought it was brilliant.

Lacey was so genuine and brutally honest about her life experience and struggles working in such a high stress operational role in the mining industry. Listening to her talk about trying to balance her career, family life and deteriorating personal health issues really struck a chord with me as it sounded all too familiar.

Laceys TEDx talk has nearly reached one million viewers on YouTube, and I still get goosebumps every time I watch it.

Lacey is the Author of Money School, a book she founded with and dedicated to her late mother Fran. Lacey credits Fran for much of her financial success; from encouraging her to save from a young age, helping her early business ventures through to gently nudging her into rethinking an expensive first car purchase into a deposit on an apartment at only 19 years old.

Lacey continues to run Money School to honor Fran’s legacy. Her mission is to teach young people the skills they need to become financially independent, in line with Frans motto ‘It is never too late to start on the path to financial independence’.

Money School tackles a pretty huge but often neglected part of FIRE - that is, what does the RE part even mean? Vicki Robbins famously said, "Financial Independence is just the beginning, and I love Laceys take on what comes next.

I love their book so much that I have since bought dozens of copies to give away to friends and family, and it's a regular feature for my online giveaways. It is a brilliant and practical guide on how to work towards becoming financially independent and time rich, which has even got some people calling her the ‘female version of the barefoot investor’

I felt a huge sense of connection to Lacey and her story. Learning a bit more about her, I found out that not only was she a great public speaker and a talented writer, but she was also a savvy entrepreneur and bloody great with her money.

I also found out that Lacey is probably one of the nicest and most compassionate human beings around. She has personally helped me through some difficult periods in my life, like helping me to navigate my parents terminal illnesses, overcoming the trauma of family members suicide attempts and dealing with my own mental health issues as I agonized with the decision whether to leave my high-stress flying career or stay

As you might know, I recently took the plunge and it was bloody scary. But having pioneers like Lacey there setting a great example and only ever a message away, I have never felt so privileged to be part of this unique, wholesome and genuine community.

Insurance with Katherine

Insurance with Katherine

On board the podcast today is Katherine Hayes, to talk all about insurances (how to cover your butt!). This is something not often talked about enough in the FI/RE space, so I was really glad to have an expert on board to break down the different types of insurances and what to look for.

Katherine is a multi-award-winning financial advisor based in Canberra who has over 20 years industry experience, and is also the co-host of the Money Madams Podcast alongside Amber Parr. She is a business owner, mum of 3 energetic boys and before she got into financial advice she was actually a croupier working onboard sailing ships in the Caribbean! So it is fair to say, Katherine knows a bit about money (especially that the house ALWAYS wins!).

I would describe Katherine as genuine, energetic, knowledgeable and passionate. Whilst we chatted for hours, we've tried to keep the episode down to a manageable chunk but it is still nearly an 1 hour 40 minutes so. I was super glad to connect with Katherine, and will definitely be asking her back onto the show to share some more of her expertise.

Digital Marketing with Richard

Digital Marketing with Richard

On board today is Richard, a Sydney based digital marketer to talk all about digital marketing and online business. Richard actually has had a similar background to me, starting off his career in engineering and then chasing financial independence through leveraging his time and creating a business in his dream job.

Richard grew up in Canberra and currently lives in Sydney with his Wife and daughters. Whilst web design and digital marketing is his specialty, he has actually been building websites since he was 15 years old (and back then it was a lot tougher and required a lot more coding!).

After a break, he ended up getting back into websites as a side hustle as taught by Matt and Liz Raad at the eBusiness Institute after he and his wife attended one of their seminars. They ended up absolutely killing it - managing to create passive income from several personal websites as well as building some high-performing websites for local business clients.

Based on their success, Richard continued to build client sites and actually was able to leave his full-time Engineering job back in 2019 and he and his Wife co-founded Paramark, their digital marketing agency which specialize in helping industrial, tech and finance businesses grow through engaging web design, search engine optimization and online advertising.

Fast forward three years to today, he runs this business full time with a team of seven, and is continually expanding. Richard runs dozens of websites both clients and personal portfolio sites, enabling his family to reach financial freedom and regain control over their lives.

He says he feels a lot better as he finally has time to spend raising his young family, with the ultimate 'work optional from home flexibility' that comes with running an online business.

Chris from Stockspot

Chris from Stockspot

Onboard today is Chris Brycki, the CEO and founder of Stockspot, a Sydney-based online investment company. Chris is an experienced fund manager, holding a Bachelor of commerce and some impressive credentials - Chris was the national winner of the ASX share trading game three years in a row, and went on to work successfully as a portfolio manager at UBS investments.

After years working as a fund manager and openly discussing finance with his close friends and family, Chris saw the need for an investment tool that was fairly priced and focused on the client, and not just on extracting the most fees out of investors! He also decided he wanted out of the corporate rat race, and somehow managed to convince his partner to sell their property to found the dream of their very own investment company. Fast forward 8 years, Chris has been an absolute success story building one of the most popular automatic investment tools in Australia and is now managing over $450 Million of client funds completely hands-free for them.

I actually really like the passive approach Stockspot use and after meeting Chris and the team I decided to voted with my dollars, and now have tens of thousands invested with them.

Today Chris and I are going to unpack this bit more and talk about what Stockspot is, how it works, the role asset allocation plays and the impact of CHESS sponsorship on the structure of your investments. I'll also try to get as much valuable information out of Chris as I can about his journey to Financial Independence and his experience working as a fund manager.

Playing with FIRE with Scott Rieckens

Playing with FIRE with Scott Rieckens

On board the podcast today is Scott Rieckens, Author of Playing with FIRE and the director of the Playing with FIRE documentary. Happily married in California with a young daughter, Rieckens had his dream life: A luxury car, yacht club membership and a big house. Underneath this façade, he was struggling with depression, overworked and overwhelmed, with no exit strategy. After discovering the financial Independence Retire Early movement, Scott began learning as much as he could, finally explaining to his family it was time to change. After a lot of research, talking and hesitation, they finally agreed. He finally quit his job, the family hit the road to move interstate, worked remotely over a year, and finally settled in a lower cost of living area, downsized their home and cut their expenses by 50%. Playing with Fire is Rieckens' story as told from their 'works in progress' perspective on their journey to financial independence through deliberate minimalism, reduced spending and maximised investing. A man after my own heart (and hairline!), Scott has championed Financial Independence, and his documentaries, short films, interviews and published works have provided information and inspiration to millions globally. I am absolutely stoked to have been able to chat with him and pick his brain for us all to benefit.

Financial Independence with Sherry the SaverSpender

On board today is Sherry, better known as the SaverSpender from her instagram channel, and her blog savespendsplurge.com
Sherry lives in Canada - the northern hemisphere's much colder version of Australia.
Today we are talking aboot the reflections from Sherry's journey to financial Independence, and the powerful lessons she can pass on for us still working towards FI
Sherry started her financial journey much like anyone else - graduating in 2006 at age 23 with enourmous amounts of student debt and into a less than satisfying working role.
Working in Science Technology Engineering and Maths, Sherry realised if she quit her job and freelanced that she could make more money and pay her student loans off faster.
in 2008 she did just that - pulling the pin on her traditional career, and trading off the stability for flexibility and higher pay.
in doing so, she was able to quadrupel her income to $260,000 and become debt free by the end of the year
in 2010 she hit the awesome milestone of a $100,000 net worth, and was hooked. She started side incomes and watched her Net Worth rapidly climb.
eight years later in 2018, she became work optional and then in 2019, became a millionaire at the age of 36.
All in all Sherry worked 13 years to become a millionaire, and now commands an impressive freelance income when she chooses to work.
Sherry is an accomplished author and blogger, having published several books on finance, investing, web design and social media management, as well as running her successful website
and instagram channels.
Sherry lives in Montreal with her partner where they are raising their child together, and enjoying the benefits of an early 'work optional' or 'semi-retirement' lifestyle.

Superannuation with Life Sherpa Part 2

Superannuation with Life Sherpa Part 2

Part 2 of Superannuation with Life Sherpa. Important that you listen to Part 1 first.

On board today is Vince Scully, better known as the Life Sherpa and Author of the popular book the Latte Fallacy which aims to dispel many common personal finance myths (like that ordering a latte or smashed avocado will stop you owning a home). Vince is a licenced financial advisor, and with over 40 years experience in the industry he has only just recently reached preservation age and is set to retire. Vince and I chew the fat on wealth, Financial Independence, Retirement, and how superannuation fits into the picture. Superannuation is a pretty massive topic, so Vince and I tackle it from a few different angles - including;

•Discussions on the evolution of Super
•When and where it may or may not be appropriate
•The different types and structures of super available (industry funds, Wrap accounts and SMSF),
•The effect of fee's on your super performance
•Insurance within your super, and
•sensible asset allocation for your super.

We look at the four important focus areas and decisions you have to make when selecting your super, and explore the trade-off of the tax benefits of super versus the flexibility of other investment structures. We also cover some interesting and important wealth topics such as home ownership, car loans and the concept of Human Capital and why early retirement might not be such a good thing.
Because it is such a big topic and I had such an awesome time chatting to Vince, I have broken it down into two parts. I didn't want to cut too much away on the editing room floor, because there are so many gems in here and actually to produce this took over four hours of interviews.

Financial Advisors with Dee

Financial Advisors with Dee

An important lesson us Pilots all learn in ground school is the value of having an experienced flying instructor. They guide, shape and mentor us as we learn to fly and eventually gain our wings.

Well similarly, A financial advisor or financial planner is a professional who can help you learn to manage your finances like a pro. They can also help with estate planning and your overall financial strategy. They should work with you to comprehensively determine your personal financial situation, needs, challenges, behaviors and your future goals, as well as regularly check back in with you to make sure you are on track.

Financial Advisors actually have to deal with some pretty impressive (and increasing) levels of regulation, and are bound in Australia by a legal obligation to act in your best interests. Having said that - they are not all the same. There are still some massive sharks in this industry, as well terrible financial products that you need to be aware of and that you probably want to avoid.
So, do I have a Financial Advisor, do you need one to reach Financial Independence, and what are some of the common pitfalls when it comes to financial Advisors?

I managed to track down an experienced, Not-for-profit financial advisor for a bit of a Q and A and got to ask pointed questions on the topic.

Dee is a not-for-profit financial advisor with over a decade of industry experience. She has over 7 years of study behind her, having earned a degree in finance and multiple financial advisor qualifications including a Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Certification in Financial Planning - among many other industry specific, technical and regulatory qualifications.

Dee deliberately made a pivot away from a higher workload and higher stress job, shifting into the not-for-profit sector to help design a more sustainable lifestyle.

She mainly works with women and families to help get them on track to reach their financial goals - whether that is paying off debt, buying a family home, building wealth or literally just keeping their heads above water. Dee's partner also works in the not-for-profit field, and together they are raising a family and investing their way towards FIRE.

Dee is no stranger to hard work. She initially earning $3 per hour in the families fish shop, and went on to be the first in her family to graduate university - even doing so debt free! She now balances the life changing work she does with ongoing professional development and being a Mum to two young children.

So without further adue lets get into it and unpack everything you need to know about Financial Advisors...
