Deus Vult IX: Amanda, Catholic Creative
1 Thessalonians 5:20-22:
"do not despise prophesying, but test everything; hold fast what is good, abstain from every form of evil."
Hannah and Mary are joined by Amanda for the ninth Deus Vult episode! Amanda discusses her faith journey, including her struggles with same-sex-attraction and how she discovered the beauty of the Church's plan for human sexuality.
Let's Talk About June.
Hannah and Mary come together for another coffee-talk about the month of June - special vacation edition (see Mary's view for this week's episode art). Hannah gives advice for navigating this month as well as diving in to apologetics regarding Catholic teaching on same-sex-attraction, and covering resources for further assistance and research. Mary discusses the devotion to the Sacred Heart and how to incorporate this in everyday life.
Hannah's tips/apologetics (in bullets)
- Be consistent in calling out sexual sin.
- You don't have to engage with everyone, but when you do, do so with charity.
- The main argument against same-sex romantic relationships is the universal call to chastity and holiness, which also refutes cohabitation, contraception, and plenty of other issues that are not exclusive to same-sex romantic relationships.
- Don't just post - pray.
- Remember that a lot of people who are the most combative and angry have been told lies about what the Church truly teaches.
Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart
Most loving Jesus, when I consider your tender heart and see it full of mercy and tenderness toward sinners, my own heart is filled with joy and confidence that I shall be so kindly welcomed by You. Unfortunately, how many times have I sinned! But now, with Peter and with Magdalene, I weep for my sins and detest them because they offend You, infinite Goodness. Mercifully grant me pardon for them all; and let me die rather than offend You again; at least let me live only to love You in return.
Amen.
June is Dedicated to the Sacred Heart

Hannah's hot take: children should not be on the internet. Mary dives into quotes proving the existence of God from C.S. Lewis.
My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust? If the whole show was bad and senseless from A to Z, so to speak, why did I, who was supposed to be part of the show, find myself in such a violent reaction against it?… Of course I could have given up my idea of justice by saying it was nothing but a private idea of my own. But if i did that, then my argument against God collapsed too–for the argument depended on saying the world was really unjust, not simply that it did not happen to please my fancies. Thus, in the very act of trying to prove that God did not exist – in other words, that the whole of reality was senseless – I found I was forced to assume that one part of reality – namely my idea of justice – was full of sense. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never have known it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.
~ C.S. Lewis
If the solar system was brought about by an accidental collision, then the appearance of organic life on this planet was also an accident, and the whole evolution of Man was an accident too. If so, then all our present thoughts are mere accidents – the accidental by-product of the movement of atoms. And this holds for the thoughts of the materialists and astronomers as well as for anyone else’s. But if their thoughts – i.e., Materialism and Astronomy – are mere accidental by-products, why should we believe them to be true? I see no reason for believing that one accident should be able to give me a correct account of all the other accidents. It’s like expecting the accidental shape taken by the splash when you upset a milk-jug should give you a correct account of how the jug was made and why it was upset.
