A poem written by Reyna Biddy for Kehlani’s 2017 album; You should be here. This poetic masterpiece is a truth echoed by many female artists about wanting people to understand them better and not put them in a box. The key is to appreciate a woman for everything she is, flaws and all.

Brenda Shaughnessy is an American poet who’s work is known for its ability to twin opposites: her poems are both playful and erotic, lyrical and funny, formal and strange.

This poem is not only about the relationship between two women and the physicality of that but the wish for that to be able to form life, the desire for them to be mothers together of a child that is both of them rather than someone else. This poem discusses something that is not unique to same sex relationships but is definitely more prominent in them. There is a desire to “Make a human being/ from the human love that passes between/ our bodies.” The love of this poem is obvious in ever line. She admires the masculinity of the butch woman she loves and sees her as the woman she is. One of the most beautiful lines in this poem is “I want to re-fashion the matrix of creation.” It’s such a strong desire that the very nature of creation is being contested. She wants so much for their child to be them and not have any male involved. Their love on its own should create a life.

These were originally published as a complete collection but were later re-published and included as part of another collection of works, written between 1974-1977, called The Dream Of A Common Language.
