Preparing for the 2024 solar eclipse [Ep. 484]

#space #science #eclipse #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx The Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Unlike 2017, the totality will not pass directly through the Carolinas. But still, at about 80% totality, there will still be some solar eclipse to experience in both North Carolina and South Carolina - weather permitting. This week on the Carolina Weather Group, James Brierton talks with Gina DiBraccio, Deputy Director of Heliophysics, NASA GSFC, about what we can expect to see, how we can prepare for the eclipse, and the scientific discoveries that are made possible by a solar eclipse. We also discuss space weather, solar storms, and the impacts of solar radiation on technology such as GPS and radio communication. Still need solar eclipse glasses? In this episode, we explain how you can make solar eclipse glasses at home. You can also reuse your glasses from the 2017 Eclipse or check retailers. While demand for the eclipses will be high, checking with unconventional retailers like video production stores or a hardware store may help. For example, B&H will ship you solar eclipse glasses (while supplies last) from https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/solar-eclipse-glasses-accessories/ci/32948. AI severe weather alerts [Ep. 481]

AI severe weather alerts [Ep. 481]

NOAAโ€™s National Weather Service (NWS) has provided manual translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish for the past 30 years, but now the agency has a new tool to be more accurate, efficient and equitable.ย

Through a series of pilot projects over the past few years, NWS forecasters have been training artificial intelligence (AI) software for weather, water and climate terminology in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, the most common languages in the United States after English. NWS will add Samoan and Vietnamese next, and more languages in the future.ย

Two of the nearly dozen locations where these AI-translated severe weather bulletins are being tested are in the Carolinas. This week, James Brierton talks with Chris Rohrbach, a meteorologist and web developer at the National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, where this artificial intelligence experiment is being tested alongside locations such as Greenville-Spartanburg, SC.

Youโ€™re invited to try out the translated severe weather bulletins at https://weather.gov/translate. NOAA wants your feedback. You can e-mail ws.translate@noaa.gov before September 29, 2024.

The man inside NC's decommissioned lighthouse [Ep. 477]

The man inside NC's decommissioned lighthouse [Ep. 477]

It's been three years since the Carolina Weather Group first talked with Richard Neal, the owner of the decommissioned Frying Pan Shoals Tower off the coast of North Carolina. James Brierton and Shea Gibson caught up with Richard recently during the Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon. Here now is that updated conversation, followed by an encore presentation of our first interview from 2020. Frying Pan Tower is located 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina and rises 135' above the Atlantic Ocean. It helps provide safety to Mariners in the Atlantic Ocean, is used for environmental research and education studies, and is a shelter to a natural ecosystem for marine wildlife. Its location makes it a prime spot to observe tropical weather off the Carolina coast, including a direct hit by Hurricane Irene in 2011. Weather conditions are observed on-board by weather sensors and a live streaming webcam. In 2010, the government placed the Frying Pan Tower up for auction, with the winning bid going to Richard Neal of Charlotte, NC. Richard is our guest on this episode of the Carolina Weather Group. The tower is powered using wind turbines and solar energy for electricity. It has a filtration system for potable water and high-speed Internet for communications. You can learn more about the tower, and make a donation to its upkeeping, on https://fptower.org/. This original episode was available early to our Patreon supporters. Tuesday's storm damage + forecasting Friday's severe weather threat [Ep. 476]

Tuesday's storm damage + forecasting Friday's severe weather threat [Ep. 476]

The Carolina Weather Group recaps Tuesday's severe weather across the states and looks ahead to another severe weather threat for Friday. On January 9, 2024, a powerful storm brought severe thunderstorms to North Carolina and South Carolina. High winds outside of thunderstorms caused tree and power line damage starting late morning on Tuesday. Winds along the Carolina coast, including New Bern, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston, peaked near 100 mph. Severe thunderstorms with a risk of damaging straight-line winds and tornadoes also occurred. Powerful tornadoes struck locations such as Bamberg County, South Carolina, and the Claremont area of Catawba County in North Carolina. Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding. More severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for both North Carolina and South Carolina on Friday. Join us for this stream and watch live cameras in cities including Aiken, Anderson, Asheville, Boone, Charleston, Charlotte, Columbia, Fayetteville, Florence, Greensboro, Greenville, the Outer Banks and Hatteras, Hilton Head, Morehead City, Myrtle Beach, Raleigh, Spartanburg, Wilmington, and more. Ice, then storms in Carolina weather [Ep. 475]

Ice, then storms in Carolina weather [Ep. 475]

An emerging weather pattern will bring a chance of winter weather, including ice, snow and sleet, to portions of North Carolina Friday night into Saturday. The best chance of wintry precipitation will be in the mountains of western North Carolina, including Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock and Hickory, but could also spill over into portions of the Piedmont and Triad, including Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. Then an early forecast preview into next week shows a chance of strong storms across portions of both North Carolina and South Carolina Tuesday into Wednesday. The Carolina Weather Group's Scotty Powell and Frank Strait, joined by WFMY's Christian Morgan and future WXII meteorologist Dylan Hudler, provide forecast analysis and insight into Carolina weather impacts expected from these two January storm systems. #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx ๐Ÿงข MERCH: https://rstrm.io/e/YDmSpk ๐Ÿ’ธ LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather ๐Ÿ”” SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup ๐Ÿ’ป VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com The Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. Trifecta: Jim Cantore, Mike Bettes and Ken Graham

Trifecta: Jim Cantore, Mike Bettes and Ken Graham

Our 12-hour Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon had lots of plans. Lots of meetings. Lots of choreographing. And yet we still knew: It's live for 12-hours. Expect the unexpected.
For me, as the technical director, the hour that stands out the most was the 4 p.m. eastern hour, when through a series of unexpected events, three big guests ended up live at the same time.

The hosts that hour came from our friends at the WeatherBrains podcast. As the first weather podcast, they have a lot of great connections and friends. Among others, they had arranged for visits from the Weather Channel's Jim Cantore and Mike Bettes. They had also arranged a conversation with Ken Graham, the National Weather Service director.

But the three weren't scheduled to appear at the same time. And yet, it happened.

It was a memorable moment for me. Three huge names in our weather industry were, for all intents and purposes, suddenly on a Zoom call hosted by my computer. (Even when you didn't see CWG hosts on-screen, the entire telethon was streaming through our HQ.) I sat here mostly frozen. I didn't want to move. I didn't want to sneeze. I didn't want to do anything that might cause the computer to freeze up, shut down, or lose Internet. (I'm sure you've been there. As you save a big school project. Close out a big work task. Or anxiously await those concert tickets. It was that type of anticipation.)

We're so lucky to have had this moment and even more lucky to have friends like WeatherBrains, who are allowing our audience to relive that moment this week on the Carolina Weather Group.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
-James Brierton

Brad Panovich and Mark Sudduth on the 2023 hurricane season [Ep. 473]

Every year, we love catching up with North Carolina's own Mark Sudduth, a storm chaser and founder of hurricanetrack.com. Each year, Mark shares with us his amazing stories of chasing and documenting some of Mother Nature's most intense tropical storms. Mark and his filmmaking are known for capturing footage where humans cannot. By securing cameras inside the path of a tropical storm or hurricane without the need for a human operator, Mark is able to safely capture amazing video of Mother Nature's true strength. For this year's conversation looking back at the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, Mark was invited to join the Carolina Weather Group and our friends from Weather Brains, Storm Front Breaks, and Chaser Chat for the Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon. In that telethon's 8 p.m. hour, Mark joined us for that special conversation, which was helmed by guest host Brad Panovich of WCNC Charlotte. The Carolina Weather Group's James Brierton catches up with Ed Mansouri, the CEO and founder of WeatherSTEM, about his network of nearly 800 weather stations nationwide that provide live storm video, real-time weather data, and other criteria data. These stations, many of which are in both North Carolina and South Carolina, provide emergency managers with ground truth to aid with weather decision support. They also provide broadcast meteorologists with vantage points, many of which come from college and professional sports venues. The live cameras are often featured on the Carolina Weather Group's live storm coverage. Ed Mansouri also says WeatherSTEM has recently installed their first WeatherSTEM Blast system, which provides audible alarms and flashing lights ahead of severe weather, at a golf course in North Carolina.

Carolina drought and wild fires [Ep. 470]

Carolina drought and wild fires [Ep. 470]

A lack of rain, combined with low humidity, is increasing the fire danger across the Carolinas. Most of North Carolina is experiencing dry and drought-like conditions. As the Poplar Drive Fire in Henderson County continues to burn, thirty counts in NC have a burn ban against outdoor fires. SC is also facing dry conditions and an increased fire danger. Duke Energy is asking everyone to voluntarily conserve water as they face decreasing water-levels in rivers and lakes. Plus, record-breaking warmth returns as high temperatures climb back into the 80s. Idalia now a tropical storm & update from NC governor

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and state officials hold a briefing to discuss what is now Tropical Storm Idalia.

The impacts of Idalia will begin to be felt in North Carolina and South Carolina starting Wednesday and continuing through Thursday.

Tropical storm-strength winds and rains will impact the Carolinas. While the exact path of Idalia is still unknown, anywhere across the Carolinas could see soaking rains and gusty winds. Some areas could see as much as 6 to 8 inches of rain.

The biggest Carolina threat from Idalia will be along the coast, where the passing storm will combine with high tide to produce coastal flooding. Across the Carolinas, we can expect to see flooding along the coast as well as along creeks, streams, and in low-lying areas.

Enhanced severe storm threat Monday [SPECIAL]

Enhanced severe storm threat Monday [SPECIAL]

Severe thunderstorms are forecast to bring damaging winds to North Carolina and South Carolina today, Monday, August 7, 2023. The line of thunderstorms will feed off the day's 100+ degree heat index, which has prompted the National Weather Service to issue heat advisories across portions of the Carolinas. The storms are expected around 4 p.m. in the western North Carolina mountains, including in Asheville, Boone, and Blowing Rock. The storms will push eastward across the Carolinas and arrive in upstate South Carolina, including Spartanburg and Greenville, and Charlotte and Greensboro between 6 and 8 p.m. The storms are expected to remain strong as they move toward Raleigh and Columbia. Coastal locations, including Wilmington, the outer Banks, Myrtle Beach and Charleston, could see the lingering effects from these strong storms during the overnight hours into early Tuesday morning. There is a 30% chance of seeing damaging winds across much of the Carolinas. This has prompted the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center to issue an "Enhanced" tier 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather across much of western and central North Carolina and South Carolina. East of I-95, the severe threat remains but is more "marginal" at a tier 1 out of 5. There is also a 15% chance of hail and a 2% chance of a tornado. As they're issued, the Carolina Weather Net will stream real-time tornado, severe thunderstorm, and flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service here: https://youtube.com/live/HaxSfNloauo?feature=share ๐Ÿงข MERCH: https://www.youtube.com/@CarolinaWeatherGroup/store ๐Ÿ’ธ LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather ๐Ÿ”” SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup ๐Ÿ’ป VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com The Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. NASA behind the science tour: Encore episode

NASA behind the science tour: Encore episode

No earlier than August 17, NASA and SpaceX intend to launch Crew-7 to the International Space Station from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Upon their arrival, Crew-6 will hand off the scientific experiments aboard the ISS and prepare for their own return to Earth. As we prepare for the transition, the Carolina Weather Group and James Brierton visits the special behind-the-scenes tour of the Kennedy Space Center from earlier this year: Learn what it takes to get astronauts into space, and how the current science aboard the International Space Station help prepare us for life aboard Artemis, the Moon, and eventually on toward Mars. Go inside the vehicle assembly building, also known as the VAB, where NASA is preparing for the Artemis missions to the Moon. Plus, climb aboard the crawler vehicle, which has been used to carry Apollo, space shuttle, and Artemis' space launch system to the historic launch complex 39B. A look inside NASA Kennedy's aviation hanger shows you the helicopters used for television broadcasts, medical transports, and security missions around the Cape. Go inside the plant lab where botanists are creating gardens that astronauts will use to grow their own food and nutrition for future missions to the moon and Mars. James and his fellow NASA Social participants interview real-life NASA astronauts and the director of Kennedy Space Center. Go off the tour path and go inside the forgotten office of Wernher von Braun, the German-American aerospace engineer who left behind Hitler's Nazi party after World War II to help the United States Air Force (now the Space Force) and later NASA develop the first rockets for space and missile defensives during the Cold War. How to track lightning for free [Ep. 460]

Finally, a free lightning tool! NASA's Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center (aka SPoRT) has released a new, interactive tool to help you track - and maybe, just maybe, predict - lightning. The map viewer, available at https://weather.ndc.nasa.gov/sport/li..., not only shows you where lightning is happening but how long since the last lightning strike. So no longer do you have to worry about keeping track of that last lightning strike before returning to the pool, beach, or soccer practice, this tool will let you know when that 30-minute window has elapsed. On this week's episode of the Carolina Weather Group, we talk with Dr. Chris Shultz, who monitors lightning professionally and personally (you'll see). This episode was available early to our Patreon supporters. Thank you for your continued support of the show! EF-3 tornado: Nash County, North Carolina | Ep. 459

EF-3 tornado: Nash County, North Carolina | Ep. 459

An EF-3 tornado, with winds at least 135 mph, caused damage across portions of Nash County, North Carolina Wednesday. Storm investigators from the National Weather Service office in Raleigh are on the ground in Nash and Edgecombe counties surveying the damage.

A supercell tornado produced the tornado Wednesday. The National Weather Service is still working to confirm the distance the tornado was on the ground, but based on preliminary storm damage assessments, the tornado was on the ground for several miles. Officials are still working to determine the extent of storm damage, which in the immediate aftermath caused extensive damage to a Pfizer building and a still undetermined number of businesses and homes.

Additional storms and severe weather are forecast in both North Carolina and South Carolina, with most of the Carolinas in a 2% chance of seeing a tornado, based on the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center Outlook.

Severe weather forecast update for the Carolinas

Severe weather forecast update for the Carolinas

Severe storms Monday will bring the threat of damaging wind, hail, and isolated tornadoes to both North Carolina and South Carolina. The threat of sever weather has prompted the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center to issue an Enhanced Risk (tier 3 out of 5) for much of the Carolinas. The biggest severe weather threat will be damaging winds and hail, but a few isolated storms could also produce tornadoes and localized flash flooding. ๐Ÿงข MERCH: https://www.youtube.com/@CarolinaWeatherGroup/store ๐Ÿ’ธ LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather ๐Ÿ”” SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup ๐Ÿ’ป VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com The Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. Pulp Road Fire grows to 16,000 acres (Bonus episode)

Pulp Road Fire grows to 16,000 acres (Bonus episode)

The N. C. Forest Service Red Incident Management Team has assumed command of the Pulp Road Fire as of this morning. Today firefighters will be transitioning from active firing operations within the Green Swamp Nature Preserve to mopping up the fireโ€™s edge.

Weather: A super fog event occurred overnight causing extremely low visibilities during the morning commute. A weak front will linger in the region through Monday with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible. A sea breeze from the southeast will increase winds in the afternoon and create gusts of 10-15 miles per hour. Rainfall chances increase Tuesday and Wednesday. Lingering smoke may have potential to mix with fog.

Acreage: 16,000 acres; Containment: 0%; Personnel and Equipment: 81 total personnel

Yesterday the firefighters continued firing operations and brought the fire to the edge of Highway 211 as planned. Due to the firing operations, the fire size increased from 11,500 to 16,000 acres. Fire acreage may fluctuate going forward due to better measurement data coming in from the field. โ€œNow that weโ€™ve completed firing operations, our main objective is to keep the fire in the block of the Green Swamp Nature Preserve. If we can accomplish that, then we will be able to put this wildfire to rest,โ€ notes NCFS Red Team Incident Commander Greg Smith.

Air quality: A Code Red air quality alert has been issued for Brunswick County. A Code Orange air quality alert has been issued for New Hanover County. Information on current air quality data for North Carolina is available at
www.airnow.gov/.

Closures: NC Highway 211 is closed between Little Macedonia and Camp Branch roads. Updates to road closures surrounding the fire is at drivenc.gov/. Due to the wildfire, the Green Swamp Nature Preserve remains closed.

Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR): A โ€œTFRโ€ is in place at an altitude from the surface up to and including 1,500 feet, daily (24 hours) until further notice. Complete information is available at tfr.faa.gov/tfr2/list.html. Flying drones within a TFR area is unlawful. Flying a drone near or around a wildfire compromises the safety of pilots and interferes with firefighting efforts.

Pulp Road Fire in Brunswick County, North Carolina [BONUS EPISODE]

Pulp Road Fire in Brunswick County, North Carolina [BONUS EPISODE]

#northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx The Pulp Road Fire in Brunswick County has burned roughly 2,500 acres in the Green Swamp Nature Preserve as of 9 a.m., June 16. Thursday, June 15, firefighting personnel completed strategic firing operations to eliminate hazardous unburned fuels outside the fire area. Crews also mopped up some significant spotovers along Richardson Road. Firefighting personnel will continue strategic firing operations into the weekend while weather conditions allow. Significant smoke is expected for communities in and surrounding Brunswick County. Areas surrounding the Green Swamp Nature Preserve and northeast of Wilmington will experience the heaviest smoke impacts. Highway 17 and other corridors could be impacted with substantial smoke, resulting in low visibility and challenging travel conditions overnight and into Saturday. In the interest of safety, residents and commuters may want to consider allowing for extra travel time or plan to take alternate routes. The N.C. Forest Service is mobilizing its Red Incident Management Team to take command of the Pulp Road Fire. Currently, operational resources working this fire include multiple engine and tractor plow strike teams as well as aircraft providing aerial support. The public is reminded to keep drones away from wildfires. While drones provide unique opportunities for aerial video and imagery of wildfire activity, they are unauthorized. Flying a drone near or around a wildfire compromises the safety of pilots and interferes with firefighting efforts. There are no injuries and no structures threatened at this time. Due to the wildfire, the Green Swamp Nature Preserve remains closed ๐Ÿงข MERCH: https://www.youtube.com/@CarolinaWeatherGroup/store ๐Ÿ’ธ LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather ๐Ÿ”” SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup ๐Ÿ’ป VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com The Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. Code Red: Wildfire smoke causes poor air quality [Ep. 456]

Code Red: Wildfire smoke causes poor air quality [Ep. 456]

The air quality in the Carolinas is so poor Wednesday that officials have issued a Code Red, a type of air quality alert that encourages everyone to consider limiting prolonged exposure outside. Those especially sensitive to air pollution, including people with asthma, should avoid outdoor exercise altogether.

The Carolina Weather Group's James Brierton discusses the poor air quality, and the weather pattern making this possible, with WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich.

Air quality is forecast to improve slightly Thursday and Friday but could still be deteriorated from smoke conditions.
