How to write fiction for radio (or audio shows) | A Merry Beggars Workshop | Peter Atkinson

NEWS FLASH: The Merry Beggars are looking to work with, employ, collaborate, and pay writers across the USA. They have an ongoing content need for content! They need between 30-60 minutes of scripts every single week. Plus, they pay writers!

This short, intense workshop starts with the medium of audio and how it works. Then we go through different styles of audio drama that affect how you're writing and what type of show it is. We go quickly into why writers should seriously consider audio. Then we'll screenshare several real-life scripts created from stories.   By the end, fiction writers will understand the excitement of radio drama, how it's different to writing short stories. And if you're up for it, you can create and submit your ideas to the Merry Beggars!

ABOUT PETER ATKINSON Peter went to Columbia University for their graduate program in acting, starred off Broadway, founded a media company, sold it to Relevant Radio, and now heads up Relevant Radio's entertainment division.

BEAKLE & THE STAR STONE
In this playful retelling of the Parable of the Treasure in the Field, the Zumbob birds from Falafel Island have only one (fairly boring) rule: be the early bird that gets the most worms. But when a curious young bird named Beakle discovers a priceless treasure on the Chief’s field, he hides it and embarks on an adventure in order to buy the royal field. Along the way, he must learn a lesson about what true treasure really is. Get this book

How an architect creates supernatural fiction for modern teens, with Verity Lucia

How an architect creates supernatural fiction for modern teens, with Verity Lucia

A young mom with several children, Verity draws on her experience as an architect to craft a unique series of stories on spiritual warfare. Her main character discovers a pair of 'magical' aviators that reveal the presence of demons and angels everywhere. Verity is passionate about simple, authentic Catholic living and witness, especially for the disconnected and downhearted modern teen. She knows her content isn't for everyone, and that's fine. Because what matters is that her readers resonate, and want to enlist alongside her!

About Verity: Verity Lucia is a former catechist for teens, a wife, and a mom of four. She is an architectural designer by trade but began writing to speak into the hearts of her children about the challenges of living in a broken world. What started as a way to talk with her daughter about the difficulties of being a teen has become a book series that she hopes will enhance how we teach the Catholic Faith to our youth. Website

Vampires, Werewolves, & Gothic Novels with Eleanor Bourg Nicholson

Vampires, Werewolves, & Gothic Novels with Eleanor Bourg Nicholson

Eleanor and Dominic talk about being a homeschool mom and lay Dominican, and writing gothic vampire novels from a Catholic standpoint.

ABOUT ELEANOR BOURG NICHOLSON
In addition to scholarly pursuits, Eleanor Bourg Nicholson occasionally strays into fiction, including her epistolary novella, The Letters of Magdalen Montague, and her Gothic novels, A Bloody Habit and Brother Wolf. A former assistant executive editor for Dappled Things, she is assistant editor for the Saint Austin Review (StAR), as well as the editor of several Ignatius Critical Editions of the classics and has collaborated with other editors to provide footnotes for numerous other works.

Her work has appeared many places including the National Catholic Register, The Imaginative Conservative, Crisis Magazine, Touchstone, First Things, The Catholic Thing, and, of course, The St. Austin Review and Dappled Things. She is the resident Victorian literature instructor at Homeschool Connections, Eleanor, with her husband, homeschools their five children. By night, she reads the Victorians, writes Gothic novels, and cares for small children.

Fun fact: She has an extremely low tolerance for scary books and movies. She's still petrified of "The Speckled Band", and won't sleep in a room where the bed is under a vent.

Parody, Cliche, and Fairy Tale Novels with Katy Campbell

Parody, Cliche, and Fairy Tale Novels with Katy Campbell

Katy and Dominic talk about fairy tales, powerful women in the ancient world, scheduling with deadlines, and self publishing.

ABOUT KATY
Katy Campbell is a Catholic humorist and lover of fairy tales. She prefers the gory originals to the squeaky clean Disney retellings but will gladly consume both. She graduated from John Paul the Great Catholic University in 2012 with a B.S. in Communications Media and recently left her real job to pursue a career as a starving author. She's published three books and numerous short stories, which you can find on her website.
See her website

THE BOOK
The Canadian Nights is a collection of comedy fairy tales set in a universe almost identical to our own—almost. For example, it’s true that you get a lovely view of Mt. Rainier if you are flying south from SeaTac on a clear day. However, the bit about the dragons circling the top of the mountain is entirely fictional. I will not apologize for such fabrications. I truly believe they make life more interesting. See the Book

Welcome to the Catholic Author Show

Welcome to the Catholic Author Show

We talk creed, craft, and co-creation, rooted in grit, grace, gods, and dragons…

We’re highlighting adult authors of all ages and genres, and your novels!

But it’s not just another fiction podcast.

We’ll talk about their stories. We’ll learn their origins. And we’ll chat about their writing styles. But we’ll also chat about our common mission: CatholicAuthors in the modern world.

This show was launched as 'Silhouettes of the Truth' in 2021, and in 2022 has been rebranded to the CatholicAuthor Show.
