My friend and cannabis attorney Kelly Hayes  @ca_purple_hayes_esq  who shares some of the ways we can and should be advocating for the cannabis industry.

Kelly Hayes focuses her legal practice on Cannabis and Hemp Law. Since 2014, Kelly's been working with a wide range of cannabis and hemp clients from small farmers to large corporations. She handles a wide array of cannabis and hemp matters including, state and local licensing applications, regulatory compliance, zoning and land/use issues, corporate and business transactions, as well as business litigation. Kelly has successfully obtained commercial cannabis licenses for numerous clients throughout the state of California.

Kelly first became involved in drug policy reform as a student member of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) during her undergraduate studies at the University of Rhode Island and while interning with SSDP’s national office located in Washington, D.C. She received her BA in Journalism from the University of Rhode Island before continuing onto Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. 

During law school, she was the President of the Public Interest Law Foundation and received a Certificate of Law and Social Justice. She worked with the City of San Diego's Primary Office of the Public Defender and Federal Defenders of San Diego.  She also researched and edited the caselaw book “Controlled Substances: Crime, Regulation and Policy” by Law Professor, Alex Kreit, a leading expert on illegal drugs and cannabis laws. Kelly is a frequent speaker at conferences and industry events.

Today's guest is Pam Chotiswatdi with The LBCA, Offbeat Ollio and 501c3 LB PECC   Pam has been using her compassion and stellar organizing skills to provide dignity to Long Beach's houseless neighbors in a collaborative effort called Project Dignity.  

Project Dignity began on February 14, 2022, as a way to build a sense of community between housed and unhoused community members by sharing food, resources, and community conversations. Since our first “Mondays Matter”, where we served cookies, coffee, and hot chocolate to a small handful of unhoused neighbors at McArthur Park in Central Long Beach, California, we collaborated on resources and supplies.  Over the past year, our efforts have become a reliant source of mutual aid, connections to city-led resources, system navigation, and neighbor-to-neighbor connections with community volunteers who also simply listen.  Project Dignity efforts created collaborations between neighborhood associations, community organizations, faith-based groups, and the government to bring dignity to neighbors experiencing homelessness. While we are aware that these efforts are "band-aids" where a tourniquet is needed, it is better to make connections and bring dignity and hope while we advocate for a city-wide or regional Strategic Master Plan for Homelessness.

Culinary and Cannabis is an interactive educational event platform. We produce in-person and virtual events that include cooking with cannabis and creating your own infused goods. We have monthly workshops covering how to make a variety of infused topicals with live virtual instructors and DIY kits so you can follow along in class or make at your convenience. Class recordings are also available for purchase. Each lesson includes a spiritual wellness aspect as we help guide the connection between the mind, body, and soul.

@nikkiandtheplant joins us to share her incredible journey from medical professional (who thought pot was just a party drug) to cannabis advocate after getting violently head butted at work by a kid who didn’t want his vaccination. The head injury resulted in a never ending headache and life altering cognitive differences that after 4 months had Nikki contemplating suicide from a Vegas hotel balcony. Instead she saw a truck drive by that gave her a whole new view on plant medicine. Returning to upstate NY she was unable to find access to the same relief she found in Vegas, until she bravely shared her frustration online and was invited to Canada where she learned the truth about cannabis.

Nikki Lawley is a patient advocate, speaker, and founder of Nikki and the Plant. She personally discovered cannabis as medicine after suffering a life-changing injury while working as a pediatric nurse.

In October of 2016, Nikki was a 46-year-old woman whose life changed in literally a second. Going from being a medical professional to becoming a patient was a major adjustment and almost cost this vibrant mother, wife, and career professional to contemplating taking her own life after becoming a victim of the traditional medical system, seeing over 50 doctors, and was on cocktails of drugs that each had more and more side effects. Four months after her injury, Nikki found plant medicine.

Nikki and the Plant is a pillar of medical cannabis advocacy and a champion for the importance of sharing patient stories. She is planning on creating the first product line focusing on cannabis and the science behind why cannabis helps support for her chronic pain, cognitive function, anxiety, and depression.

Nikki is on the Patient Advisory Board for NY State Americans for Safe Access and for Cannabis BPO. Nikki is considered a leading voice in the community, chronicling her journey from being a healthcare provider to a patient to an advocate. She hopes to bring worldwide awareness to invisible illness and disability. She has been a guest on multiple podcasts and shows including “Let’s Be Blunt with Montel Williams.”
