Trapped but free

Trapped but free

Sometimes the circumstances of life bring us to a point where we are not in a place of what we would choose or desire. We can easily feel trapped and hemmed in. Yet Psalm 16 says ‘the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.’ Is it possible to know God’s freedom when we find ourselves in a difficult place. John in Revelation 1, imprisoned on an island on Patmos found freedom when he found himself ‘on the Lord’s day..in the Spirit’. The Lord’s Prayer also has surprising things to teach us! Dispel the fog

Dispel the fog

Many folks in the Bible had encounters with God up a mountain! It is a place where we can leave the fog and mist of the valley, and get a better perspective of reality and what is around us. Moses famously met God on Mount Horeb in a burning bush. As we look at this episode from Exodus 3v1-14, we see how Moses began to get a clearer picture of who he was, who God is and what God was calling him to.  God still desires today to lift the fog of our inadequacies and disappointments, and empower us with a fresh vision of who He is and what He is calling us to.

When the heavens open

When the heavens open

Just as Jacob needed the heavens to open when he found himself in a rocky wilderness (Genesis 28:10-22), we certainly need God to open the heavens afresh in our lives.  He wants to do that, to bless and to give us fresh  hope.

The wonder of the God who comes

The wonder of the God who comes

God came to Mary in a startling fashion through an angel, with words of grace and love as well as promises of His real and vibrant presence, announcing that she would miraculously bear the coming Saviour of the world. He reassured her in the midst of her distress and questions, and as she surrendered to Him, something (or Someone) amazing happened in her (Luke 1v26-36).  So began her journey of wonder and expectancy.

In the same way, He also comes to us, with words of grace, love and promise, challenging us to receive Him afresh in these days - His salvation, His call to walk with Him and His presence itself.  If we do, our eyes will be filled with wonder, and we will never be the same again!

Come dine with me!

Come dine with me!

Holman Hunt’s famous painting, ‘The Light of the World,’ was inspired by Jesus’ words: ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him’ (Revelation 3v20). Today we look at the context in which Jesus spoke these words when He invited a struggling church in Laodicea (modern Turkey) to put aside all lukewarmness and to passionately seek all that God would want to give them.

Open you eyes, for there is hope

Open you eyes, for there is hope

We can easily feel in these days as if the darkness is closing in, in our personal lives as well as on a national and international scale. The Lord wants to open our eyes to see where all of history is heading,  culminating in his kingdom gloriously manifest in new heavens and a new earth. But this kingdom has already broken into our world and lives, if we, like Elisha's servant in 2 Kings 6v13-17, can but see it!

Deeper

When we are buffeted by fears, anxieties and disappointments, and struggle with our human limitations, the Lord encourages us to draw deeper from the well of His love, hope and faith. God's Powerful Voice, God's Gentle Voice

God's Powerful Voice, God's Gentle Voice

We take a look at a key moment in the life of Elijah in 1 Kings 19 when he felt alone, at the end of himself and despairing of life itself. God comes to him in great tenderness, and speaks to him, not in the mighty manifestations of an earthquake, fire or wind, but in a gentle whisper. We all long to hear God speak to us. Today we explore how we can draw near to Him, to be still and know that He is indeed an all powerful, yet deeply caring God.

From Struggle to Blessing

We all struggle with many things – our past, our present circumstances, what we have done, what’s been done to us, and even with ourselves. Like Jacob in Genesis 32:22-31, we can encounter God in the midst of our struggles and receive new life, new hope and the very life-giving blessing of God…especially when we cry out like Jacob, ‘I will not let you go until you bless me!’

Come Home!

Come Home!

In Psalm 23v5, we see God preparing a table before us, inviting us to come home and feast!  There are so many reasons we do not receive his gracious love. We feel unworthy,  we get busy and distracted,  we feel we should be doing something for Him...rather than simply receiving His love that continuously and pursues us. Will you  take a seat at the banquet of His love today?

Misunderstood Friend

Misunderstandings can trip us up, be stumbling blocks to our understanding and yet if we are prepared to allow the Spirit of Truth to penetrate our hearts, minds and blind spots, we, like Mary, can say 'We have seen the Lord' (John 20:18).

In our service yesterday, Suzanne explored how Judas may have misunderstood his friend, Jesus.

Suzanne focuses on Judas and his act of betrayal in the garden.
