Ardmore's Ricky Smith is heading to the University of Oklahoma

Ardmore's Ricky Smith is heading to the University of Oklahoma

Ardmore’s Ricky Smith Junior wrapped up his senior season in dominating fashion, bringing home four gold medals in the the OSSAA Class 5A State Track Meet. “It’s a killer mindset at the end of the day when you step on this track because the winner wins and the losers lose,” said Smith.

Smith won the boys 100m and 200m run, as well as the long jump and 4x100m relay. Smith credits his success from a combination of hard work and dedication paying off in the end.

”Sometimes you get people that lead by example,” said Bell. “Sometimes you get people that lead by what they say. Sometimes you get them through character and he did all of that for us.”

”Whatever I want to do, I want to be the best at,” said Smith. “Whether that’s physical therapy, going into college, or whether that’s track. I want to push myself to be the best. Honestly it’s just the killer mindset I was born with.”

Thank you for listening to my interview with Ricky Smith. Please share this with your family and friends.

Can you really cook with June Fair Harris Robinson and Cedric Bailey

Can you really cook with June Fair Harris Robinson and Cedric Bailey

In today world many people are spending more time at home cooking for their family. Today on the Traffic Jam with Cedric Bailey we talked about the importance of cooking with June Fair Harris Robinson. According to June her mother and grandmother really can cook and they past down the skills to June, Sharon and Beverly while growing up in Stonewall Oklahoma. Today June has pass this on to her children as well. There are two important factors to consider when deciding which tasks your child is able to perform in the kitchen: their physical ability to do the task and their mental ability to comprehend the task and, in particular, the possible dangers involved.

Young children will not have the strength to lift pots and pans or to cut through dense foods like potatoes, but they also may not know that hot foods can burn them or that knives are dangerous. Younger kids also may have trouble remembering a series of steps that need to be followed, so you can help them by breaking down a task step by step as they go along. They definitely need to show that they can follow directions before you let them handle dangerous equipment.

You know your child better than anyone, but here are some tips for helping them get acquainted with the kitchen so that they can become proficient. It is important that your kids master each level before going on to more technical cooking activities.

Author June Fair Harris Robinson

Author June Fair Harris Robinson

June Fair Harris Robinson was born into poverty at Valley View Hospital in Ada, Oklahoma during the late 1950’s.  June, being the 5th of 8 children was the 1st of her siblings born in a hospital setting. Until 1971 her family lived in an old uninsulated dilapidated shack that had no indoor plumbing. Winters were cold and summers were hot.  Government-issued commodities were their primary source for meals during those years of lack. June grew up in the small town of Stonewall, Oklahoma where she attended integrated public schools. June’s parents attended segregated schools and both received a 10th grade education.  June’s father worked as a service station attendant and her mother initially worked as a dishwasher and later a cook.

After graduating from high school, June became a 1st generation college student after receiving financial assistance from a generous donor who lived in her hometown.  Through God’s grace, the trajectory of June’s life changed.  Statistics had already predicted she wouldn’t graduate from high school. June received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1983 from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and followed a career path to Wichita, Kansas where she worked with Special Needs students,

In 1987, June changed careers and began working for Sedgwick County Department of Corrections at Judge James Riddel Boys Ranch in Goddard, Ks.  June found her niche in working with male juvenile offenders. In her years of  work it became apparent that her students had taught her so much.  She learned compassion and mercy on another level.  She learned to think outside the box. She discovered the effectiveness and value of building healthy relationships. June retired in 2016, as Corrections Shift Supervisor.

Writing has always been a type of therapy for June.  It was something that came natural to her.  She began writing her 1st book in 1995 but lacked the confidence to seek out publication.  In 2007 she began writing again and became a published author in 2010 after completing Book 1, Varsity Dreams.

Varsity Dreams is a children’s book for 3rd grade students and above.  June’s character, Jimmy Jenkins is a gifted  basketball player in  need of a pair of basketball shoes.  His family cannot afford to buy him a pair. The book vividly describes some of the challenges faced by children living in poverty.  So often, children living in poverty are left trying to solve the problems of meeting basic needs.

In 2020, June completed Cattle on a Thousand Hills which is the sequel to Varsity Dreams.  June’s character,  Jimmy Jenkins continues his journey through a maze of interpretation in Book 2.  Through it all he comes to understand that his Varsity Dreams came to fruition through Cattle on a Thousand Hills.

June resides in Wichita, Kansas with her husband Ronald Robinson.  June’s 3 adult children, Lance (Alexandria),  Jordan (Marissa) and Lindsay Harris also reside in Wichita along with her seven grandchildren, Mariah, Michael, Lincoln, Londyn, Lane, Mason and Landan Harris.

Ted and Sheri on the Cedric Bailey Radio Show

Ted and Sheri on the Cedric Bailey Radio Show

TED & SHERI

After a dozen year hiatus, one of gospel music’s most legendary duos, Ted & Sheri – Ted Winn and Sheri Jones-Moffet, are back together again! The Stellar Gospel Music Award winning pair has teamed up with the dazzling GRAMMY® Award nominated foursome, The Walls Group. The blend of their respective Memphis and Houston church-trained voices is nothing short of magical on the soulful retro-styled, feel-good groove, “Now I Know” (Ted & Sheri, LLC / Black Smoke).

The Memphis-reared duo of Ted & Sheri first hit the national stage in 2001 with the release of the independent album, The Healing Starts Right There (Church Howze), which earned them two Stellar Gospel Music Awards. The project featured the fan favorites, “Come Ye Disconsolate,” a remake of Andrae Crouch’s classic “I’ll Be Thinking of You,” and the acapella tune, “Thank Him.” Their 2004 sophomore album, Celebrate, featured the Billboard Top 5 title-cut that was written for them by Donald Lawrence. The cut, “God Will Take Care,” was featured on the platinum-selling project, WOW Gospel 2005. By the end of the decade, they had amicably pursued solo careers.

Sheri went on to lead “Encourage Yourself” by Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers on their Billboard No. 1 smash, “Encourage Yourself,” in 2007. She followed with two solo albums for EMI Gospel / Motown Gospel that birthed radio singles such as “Shine” and “Faith to Believe.” Her debut set, Renewed (Motown Gospel) earned her a GRAMMY® Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album in 2009.

Ted launched his own recording label, Teddy’s Jamz, in 2009. His solo debut album, Balance (Teddy’s Jamz), appeared soon after with radio hits such as “God Believes in You,” “Moving Forward,” and the Top Ten smash, “The Lifter.” His 2017 album, Stand in Awe (Teddy’s Jamz), featured four radio singles, including the Top 10 smash, “Grateful,” which featured the dynamic vocals of song stylist, Maranda Curtis.

In 2021, Ted & Sheri reunited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first release last year by partnering with Black Smoke Music Worldwide to release their first album in nearly two decades. The music video for their first offering, “God Can Heal It,” has racked up over a half million YouTube views. Their as yet untitled album will release later in 2022.

Claudia Massey interview with Cedric Bailey

Today's guest on the Cedric Bailey Radio Show is Claudia Massey. Claudia R. Massey is a resident of Richmond, Virginia where she devotes much of her time being a wife to her husband, James, and a mother to their children. She is the Co-Founder of Patience for Patients, LLC, a non-medical homecare agency that provides personal care and companionship services to the geriatric population. Claudia attends Courthouse Road Church of Seventh-Day Adventists where she is a devoted member and Women’s Ministry Leader. In her very spare time, she enjoys traveling with her family, feeding the homeless at local shelters and giving back to those in need through a family initiative she founded in memory of her mom, Rena’s New Life Ministry. To those who know her, she is affectionately known as one of the sweetest and strongest people one will ever meet. Her compassion for people, even during her own adversities, is truly unmatched.

After surviving sexual abuse as a teen, working through the heartbreak of failed past marriages, suffering the loss of her mother, battling the pains of sickle cell disease daily, supporting a military spouse, all while nurturing her three special needs children adopted out of foster care, in addition to her biological children, Claudia discovered the best way for her to manage her life experiences was by talking through them!

What issues are weighing you down right now? What are you battling to overcome?

What does it take to get you on the other side of whatever is bothering you?

Let's TALK about it!

Night of Healing Ardmore Oklahoma

Night of Healing Ardmore Oklahoma

Story by the Ardmoreite: Drew Butler

The community gathered at Noble Stadium on Thursday evening to reflect on the losses of the past year while also looking forward to the future at Night of Healing. The evening included inspirational music from Equip Life Music Ministry and a solo performance from Susan Pfau Yeager as well as an inspirational message from Pastor Artie Farve and Pastor and City Commissioner John Credle. One of the highlights, however, came when Allen Benson shared his story of surviving COVID.

Benson, a native Ardmoreite and graduate of Ardmore High School, pointed out that COVID does not care who you are or what your history may be. While at AHS, he played football and later went on to Oklahoma State University where he was starting linebacker for his junior and senior years. After college he went on to work at Michelin for 37 years as well as run his own yard service.

As he phrased it during his speech, COVID looked at all of those things and said, “so what?”

“I was in the hospital for six days,” Benson said. “I couldn't breathe. I was so weak that I ran out of energy in the shower. The first time I got the chance for a shower, I had to sit down. That's how weak I was. I took two transfusions to bring be back. I lost about 30 pounds – which I did have to lose, but I didn't want to lose it that way.”

He noted that the isolation of being in the COVID unit took it's toll. But he was able to make it through with the help of Christ.

“When you're isolated and your loved ones are not around you, who is there with you,” he asked. “Jesus was there with me every step of the way. I could feel him holding my hand. The thing I wanted to know was what can I do to help this along. I know God doesn't need my help, but it was mostly for me and my family.”

Benson eventually recovered as did his family members who also had the virus.

He offered some closing advice to anyone dealing with the virus – or any of life's other problems.

“Don't ever give up,” Benson said. “Fight to the end. And when God stepped in, God said that's my child. Leave him alone. And I'm still here today.”

Dunbar Wildcats vs Castleberry Lions from Clark Stadium

Dunbar Wildcats vs Castleberry Lions from Clark Stadium

Victor "Scotter McCray and Cedric Bailey of the BGC Sports Network were on hand at Clark Stadium for an high scoring football game between Dunbar Wildcats and Castleberry Lions.

After a sluggish start by both teams, Saturday’s District 6-4A Division 1 zone-seeding contest between Castleberry and Fort Worth Dunbar turned into a shootout. The Lions and Wildcats combined for 110 points.

Castleberry receiver Lonnie Adams had a career game and his 34-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Drew Aguillon with 26 seconds left sent the Lions past the Wildcats, 57-53, at Clark Stadium.

Adams finished with 12 catches for 262 yards and three TDs.

The district elected to turn into two four-team zones to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. After playing three zone teams, Saturday’s game was meant for a playoff spot. The Wildcats finished second in their zone while the Lions were third in theirs.

If the district doesn’t complete all its games, the Lions clinch a berth. But if a full district schedule can be played out among all eight teams then playoff seeding reverts back to normal district standings.

Dunbar QB Dorian Carr hit Aaryn Conley on a 46-yard TD pass to put the Wildcats up 53-50 with 2:01 left in the game. The Lions got the ball back at their own 37 with 1:51 to play. Facing a fourth-and-7 at the 40, Aguillon and Adams connected for 15 yards and a first down. The duo also hooked up for an 11-yard gain to put the Lions at the Dunbar 31 and Adams scored two plays later while being covered by three defenders.

Dunbar (3-3, 2-2 in district) got as far as the Castleberry 41, but the Wildcats were backed up for a third-and-29 before the clock ran out. Dunbar will face FW Western Hills Oct. 30. Aguillon accounted for 399 yards and six TDs. He rushed for 150 yards and threw for 249 on 12 of 28 passing.

The Lions (2-4, 2-2) out-gained Dunbar 572-414 in total yardage.

After Dunbar turned the ball over on downs to open the game, Castleberry went three-and-out, but the Wildcats blocked the Lions’ punt attempt and the ball landed in the hands of linebacker Trevon Gray-McCoy.

Gray-McCoy took off and scored on a 48-yard return to give Dunbar a 7-0 lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter.

However, the Lions answered on the ensuing kickoff when Diego Rivera scored on a 91-yard TD and after a successful 2-point conversion, Castleberry led 8-7.

After several turnover on downs from both teams, the scoring picked up with 35 points in the second quarter. It started at the 11:11 mark of the period when Conley picked off a Castleberry pass attempt and returned it 35 yards to the end zone that gave the Wildcats a 14-8 lead. The Lions regained the lead, 15-14, when they turned a Dunbar fumble into points. After the Wildcats put the ball on the turf, the Lions scored four plays later as they converted a fourth-and-13 on an 18-yard TD pass from Aguillon to Adams, who had six grabs for 124 yards in the first half.

Dunbar scored two plays later when 5-foot-5 freshman Malik Montgomery scored on a 40-yard TD run to give the Wildcats a 21-15 lead with 5 1/2 minutes until halftime. Castleberry took a 22-21 lead after a 4 1/2 minute drive, spanning 79 yards in 10 plays, as Anthony Valadez scored from the 4.

With seven seconds left, the Wildcats threw a Hail Mary. Carr threw up a long pass, which was nearly intercepted. But the ball bounced off a Castleberry defender and Conley caught it and scored to complete the 72-yard TD as time expired. Dunbar led 28-22 at intermission.

Dunbar extended its lead to 40-29 late in the third quarter with touchdown runs from Dariante Hall (70 yards) and Montgomery (4 yards), but Castleberry scored 14 unanswered to grab a 43-40 lead with 8:54 left to play when Aguillon kept it on a pair of TD runs (11, 1). The latter was followed by a Rivera pass to Adams for the two.
