S5E7: The Fourth Commandment - The Law of God
Exodus 20:1-11 | We keep the Sabbath or the Lord’s day holy by resting the whole day, not just from doing things that are inherently sinful at any time, but even from worldly affairs and recreations that are lawful on other days. Except for necessary works or acts of mercy, we should joyfully spend all our time publicly and privately worshipping God.
S5E6: The Third Commandment - The Law of God
Exodus 20:1-7 | The third commandment requires the holy and reverent use in our thoughts, meditations, words, and writings, of God’s name and anything else by which God makes himself known. This means our affirmations of our faith and our conduct or behavior must match our affirmations to the glory of God and the good of ourselves and the others. Our behavior can never complement the holiness of God’s character without Christ Jesus living in and through us what is pleasing to God.
S5E5: The Second Commandment - The Law of God
Exodus 20:1-6 | This week's sermon is given by Rev. Dr. Robert Howard continues our study in Exodus. The second commandment requires us to recieve, perform, and preserve all the regulations for worship that God has established in His word. These include: prayer, the reading, preaching, and hearing of the world; the administration of and receiving the sacraments; church government and discipline; the administration and upkeep of the church; religious fasting; swearing by the name of God; and making vows to Him. Also included are disapproving, denouncing, and opposing false worship and doing our best, in accordance with our position and calling in life, to eliminate it and all forms of idolatry. Idolatry is the chief sin of the human heart and impossible to resist except by grace and power of Christ and the Holy Spirit.
S5E4: The First Commandment - The Law of God
Exodus 20:1-3 | This week's sermon is given by Rev. Dr. Robert Howard continues our study in Exodus. What does it mean to have no other gods? The first commandment requires us to know and recognize God as the only true God and our God and to worship and glorify him and rejoicing in him. We must also be zealous for and call on him, giving him all praise and thanks completely obeying and submitting to him in our whole person. Finally, we must walk humbly with him being careful to please him in everything we say and do and being genuinely sorry when we offend him. We are completely unable to do so without the indwelling help of Jesus Christ.
S5E3: The Obligation of the Law of God - The Law of God
Exodus 20:1-2; 1 Peter 1:15-21 | This week's sermon is given by Rev. Dr. Robert Howard continues our study in Exodus. Christians are called to be holy. What does that holiness look like? Exodus 19:21-25; Romans 3:9-20 | This week's sermon is given by Rev. Dr. Robert Howard continues our study in Exodus. If we are saved by grace through faith, what role does the moral law play in living the Christian life? If the works of the law cannot save us from the judgement of God concerning our sin, then what place does the law of God play in our salvation?
S5E1: The Law of God: Moral, Civil, and Ceremonial - The Law of God
Exodus 19:1-11 | Today we begin a new series titled "The Law of God" that will study the Book of Exodus. This week's sermon is given by Rev. Dr. Robert Howard. God’s Law would mark, out of all nations, a people who would be God’s treasured possession. Obedience to this Law would define them as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Therefore, the Law God gave through Moses is grouped into three categories: the moral law, the civil law and the ceremonial law. The civil law guided the nation of Israel in fulfilling God’s will concerning civil matters. The ceremonial law guided the nation of Israel on how they were to worship God and what observances they must perform to be acceptable to God. All these ceremonial laws were foretastes of the fulfilled work of Christ in His sacrifice for our sins on the cross. Christians do not need to follow these ceremonial laws in order to worship God be because Christ fulfilled them once and for all.
