CGSS Podcast Series

By UBCO CGSS

Welcome to the Podcast of the Chemistry Graduate Student Society at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus! We're interested in having conversations with chemists of all backgrounds, and talking to them about their professional journey and why they love chemistry, and what else is worth loving?

The Podcast is run by PhD students at UBC Okanagan:

Creator, coordinator, and guest-host: Viki Kumar Prasad (Computational Chemistry),
Host and editor: Riley Petillion (Chemistry Education),

Music performed by Sutirtha Chakraborty.

Episode 5 - "...a thread for me all the way thorugh was learning to ask more and more questions..." - Dr. Alison Flynn

Alison Flynn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She was recently accepted into the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s highest recognition for excellence in education at the post-secondary level.  Her work includes developing open-access online learning tools and flipped course structures to support student learning, especially in high enrolment classes. Her research group studies student learning in organic chemistry (FlynnResearchGroup.com). As uOttawa’s 2016 Chair in University Teaching, she developed and evaluated the Growth & Goals module. At the provincial level, she is a Director on eCampusOntario’s Board; this organization brings together all the provinces' universities and colleges to foster technology-enabled innovation, research, and excellence on behalf of students. At the National level, she is helping to build Canada’s strength in Chemistry Education Research (ChemEdCanada.com), and is the Canadian Society for Chemistry’s Director of Accreditation. Internationally, she is part of an IUPAC-funded international team that is exploring learning outcomes focused on systems thinking in chemistry. She is also a member of the Global Young Academy and co-leads the GYA’s Science Advice Working Group. In all her work, she is committed to helping students succeed in their chosen careers and goals.

Episode 4 - "...the difference between the people who succeed and the people who fail is how you handle failure..." - Dr. Ian Lewis

Episode 4 - "...the difference between the people who succeed and the people who fail is how you handle failure..." - Dr. Ian Lewis

Dr. Ian Lewis is an Assistant Professor and Alberta Innovates Translational Health Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. Dr. Lewis earned a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed his postdoctoral training at Princeton University. The Lewis laboratory specializes in unraveling the complex host-pathogen metabolic dynamics that occur during infections. To support this research, Dr. Lewis founded the Calgary Metabolomics Research Facility (CMRF), a unique microbiology, engineering, and analytical laboratory that was specifically designed for decoding microbial metabolism and translating these phenomena into practical tools for diagnosing and fighting infections. Recently, Dr. Lewis launched the Alberta Precision Exchange (APEX), a new provincial wide program that leverage’s Canada’s unique health infrastructure to fast-track the development of medical diagnostic technology. In partnership with Genome Canada, Dr. Lewis has helped drive the development of a suite of new diagnostic tools and treatment practices that may significantly reduce the number of people who die from infections.

Episode 3 - "...have a legitimate Plan B..." - Dr. Isaac Tamblyn

Dr. Isaac Tamblyn is a Senior Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada and is a Faculty Affiliate with the Vector Institute and the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation. He holds Adjunct status in the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He conducted postdoctoral studies at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow). He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Dalhousie University as a Killam Scholar in 2009. His current research interests are focused on the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning to problems in nanoscience.

Episode 2 - "...if it was easy, it would be done already..." - Dr. James Harynuk

Episode 2 - "...if it was easy, it would be done already..." - Dr. James Harynuk

After completing an undergraduate degree in Environmental Chemistry at the University of Waterloo in 1999, Dr. James Harynuk joined the newly-formed research group of Tadeusz Górecki also at the University of Waterloo. There he was the first Canadian researcher to begin studying the new and exciting field of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC). He finished his PhD in December of 2004, and in January 2005, he took up a position with the Australian Centre of Research on Separation Science at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, working with Philip Marriott. While there he continued his studies into GC×GC applications and theory. In May 2007, Dr. James Harynuk found himself at the University of Alberta, starting up a new laboratory. In the past 10 years his research group has grown significantly and his research has broadened to include forensics, metabolomics and chemometrics.

Episode 1 - "...think one day at a time, and do what interests you...." - Prof. Jillian Buriak

Episode 1 - "...think one day at a time, and do what interests you...." - Prof. Jillian Buriak

Prof. Jillian Buriak holds the Canada Research Chair of Nanomaterials for Energy. Prof. Buriak’s research group is interested in several themes of materials chemistry, including the development of materials for energy applications, including photovoltaics and energy storage, self-assembly for nanopatterning applications on semiconductor surfaces, and mechanistic surface chemistry on semiconductors such as silicon. She is presently Editor-in-Chief of the American Chemical Society (ACS) journal, Chemistry of Materials. Prof. Buriak is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), and the Royal Society of Canada. Recent awards include the Arthur Doolittle Award from the Polymer Materials Science and Engineering Division (PMSE) of the ACS, the Rio Tinto Alcan Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the Burghausen Award from the City of Burghausen, Germany, the E. W. R. Steacie Award from the CSC, and others. Prof. Buriak was on the Board of Reviewing Editors (BoRE) at Science from 2003 to 2008, was an Associate Editor at ACS Nano from 2009 to 2013 before taking on the position of Editor-in-Chief of Chemistry of Materials.  Prof. Buriak received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1990, and a Ph.D. from the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France, in 1995. After an NSERC postdoctoral appointment at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, Prof. Buriak started her independent faculty career at Purdue University in 1997, being promoted to associate professor, with tenure, in 2001. In 2003 she joined the University of Alberta and the National Institute for Nanotechnology as a full professor and Canada Research Chair.
