Episode 35: Interview with Brodie Sharpe-Physiotherapist, Founder & CEO of The Run Smarter Series

Brodie Sharpe is a licensed Physiotherapist in Australia, and a runner passionate about helping runners. After working on his own injury he realized he could help runners world-wide get back to what they love doing most. He has spent years helping hundreds of runners feel confident in running again, providing evidence-backed information to help with current injuries, and sharing critical information to reduce the likelihood of future injuries. The runner’s life isn’t easy but Brodie believes that with the right tools, education, and a good guide, it can be one of the most rewarding ways to stay in shape and move through life. During this episode we talk about 4 principles to overcome any injury, tips on how to incorporate cross training into your routine, his mission that inspired him to create the Run Smarter podcast and what chasing life means to him. I hope you enjoy the conversation. For more information about Brodie's Run Smarter series courses, the e-book on the Principles to Overcome any injury, his blog posts, & a link to his podcast, download the Run Smarter App. . Memorable quotes: Every individual component of your body has different adaptation zones, and we want to make sure that when we are training that we respect that adaptation zone and that we hit that adaption zone so we can get stronger, but we want to make sure we don’t underdo thing or overdo things. A lot of people when they are injured ask me when they can start running, and I always say start embarrassing slow & low speed and take it from there Where runners get really stuck is they only love running and all they want to do is running, running is their mental release- it helps with good mental health- and then when they are injured, and they can’t run, that’s when they really struggle because they don’t have any alternatives Anyone can adapt to being a runner, so don’t let anyone convince you otherwise Resources: Chasing Life Podcast Episode 19 with Rachel Macri, DPT The Run Smarter Series  Follow Brodie on Instagram @runsmarterseries The Run Smarter Podcast Run Smarter Podcast; Is there a right or a wrong running shoe with JF Esculier . Episode 34: Interview with Bart Yasso, Former Runner's World Chief Running Officer

Episode 34: Interview with Bart Yasso, Former Runner's World Chief Running Officer

Dubbed the "Mayor of Running," Bart Yasso is one of the best-known figures in the sport, but few people know why he started running competitively, how it changed or rather saved his life.  As the Chief Running Officer for Runner's World Magazine for over 30 years, Bart was the public face of Runner’s World at races in the United States and abroad. Many runners have told Bart that he had the greatest job in the world, getting to travel to races around the world and meet runners of all abilities. He is one of the few people to have completed races on all seven continents from the Antarctica marathon to the Mt. Kilimanjaro marathon, but it's not the details of the races he recall it's the people he meets. During this interview he shares some of these memorable experiences along with how he feels about "Yasso 800s", a marathon-training schedule used by thousands around the world.

One of the icons of the sport, Yasso has been inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions, He has also completed the Ironman five times and the Badwater 146 through Death Valley and cycled, unsupported and by himself, across the country twice.it was an honor for me to speak with him.

.

Memorable quotes

  • Never Limit where running can take you- physically, geographically, emotionally,  spiritually, - the sport has done a lot for me
  • There are no shortcuts in running, you have to do the hard work if you want to run faster
  • You can get a lot more out of your body than you think and running proves that
  • First thing I did when I walked into my office, was I said to myself, today I have to get someone who today isn’t a runner, to run.
  • I don’t have a sign that says, Hi I'm Bart Yasso, tell me your running story, but people do come up and tell me their story
  • Who would not want to run with a youngster, in their first race, and call that your job
  • If a sport is powerful enough to suppress something as evil as apartheid, that’s my sport
  • I really wanted to travel the world and never thought that running would be the vehicle to take me where I ended up running races, it really was a dream come true
  • The coolest thing in the sport of running, I got to physically witness,  women coming into the sport

Memorable Quotes
Everyone has something different they need to do in their situation in order to get the most out of themselves
.
Your goal should be driving behavioral change
.
Always focus on doing the highest quality of work at the level you can do it now and focus on changing it and improving it when you know you are ready
.
The universe conspires to create opportunities for you, its up to you to recognize them when they come and its up to you to have the skills to take advantage of them when the time comes
.
It’s a more healthy approach to life to say “you know what, I am going to keep building skills and I'm going to keep setting myself up to be ready for opportunities and keep my eyes open to them, and not get caught up on what I am doing now is the only possible thing”
.
On a macro level, it’s going to inconvenience someone if you are chasing your life, and you have to accept that
.
What I gained in feeling like I was being intentional and being priority driven, and being the person I aspired to be, far outweighed what I felt like I was giving up
