Dr. Nadeem Karimbux was appointed dean of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in July 2019. He also serves as professor in the Department of Periodontology. Before joining TUSDM in 2012, Dr. Karimbux served in numerous positions at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), including director of predoctoral periodontology, program director of the Advanced Graduate Education Program in Periodontology and in 1998, assistant dean for dental education. Dr. Karimbux has served on the board of editors for the Journal of Dental Education and as an associate editor for the Journal of Periodontology and MedEdPORTAL. He is the editor for the Journal of Dental Education and the online editor for Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology textbook. Dr. Karimbux has received numerous honors during his academic career, including the G.W. Teuscher Award from the American Society of Dentistry for Children, the Periodontal Educator Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, and Distinguished Faculty Awards from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. In 2010, he received the Presidential Citation from the American Dental Education Association. He has published more than 100 papers, authored textbooks, and lectured worldwide. In 2015, he received the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service from the University. Dr. Karimbux received his D.M.D. from HSDM in 1991 and his M.M.Sc. and Graduate Certificate in periodontology from HSDM in 1993.

Dr. Antani was inspired by his mother, who has been in the dental field for more than 20 years, and he knew at the age of 12 that dentistry was his calling.

After completing a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Antani matriculated and graduated from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and subsequently completed a one year hospital-based general practice residency. Winning the coveted New York Academy of Dentistry Ethics Award has been one of the highlights of his career.

Dr. Antani believes in patient-centric care; providing diagnosis, advice, and treatment based on what is best for the patients long term. The goal is to guide them into not just fixing teeth or gums, but to help them understand the mouth-body connection.

In New Mexico since 2015, Dr. Antani has worked with the Indian Health Services and the Veterans Administration with team-work based dentistry. In 2018, Dr. Antani provided free implants in Mexico and as a result won an award for Top 40 Under 40.

85: Confidence - Part 1

If you don’t have a current practice of thinking about your thinking, that’s where we want to start. We want to become aware of the thousands of ideas going on in our brains all day, every day – and just…kind of…observe them

When we’re growing up, most of us are taught how to think – what to do, what not to do, if we’re good or bad based on what we do… all of the things that the well-meaning adults in our lives say to us and try to teach us.

As we are growing, we hear thoughts, often in the voice of someone we have decided holds the authority to tell us how to view ourselves – we may hear thoughts of criticism in the voice of a parent, or hear thoughts of correction in the tone of a teacher

As these types of critiques repeat in our lives and in our minds, they become programmed – they become patterned ways of thinking about ourselves.

As we get older, the voice in our head starts to shift from a parent or teacher’s voice to our own voice.

Which makes the thoughts that we have even more believable – because they sound like ourselves.

Sometimes we have pretty good ideas – ones that are aligned with where we want to grow – that motivate us, and other times, our ideas lack any hint of utility.

It is incredibly important that rather than believing our thoughts – or assuming they’re real, merited, or justified – that we take a step back – as a regular, conscious practice – and just think about our thinking and decide – as we notice our ideas – if those ideas truly serve us.

Not if the idea is provable, not if you’re sure it’s true, but if it is actually a beneficial thing to think about.

60: Leadership Training

I want to prepare you with some important components to consider as you’re planning for your organization’s growth, specifically in relation to your leadership development initiatives.

Now whether you’re working on a slow and steady growth strategy, or you have a more aggressive plan – your bottom lines are going to be hit or missed in correlation with the type of leadership that exists.

And leadership is a widely understood priority, we spent over 40 billion dollars last year in the US on leadership development. So if you recognize that there’s room for or a need for development in this area in your teams, you’re probably onto something.

So the first thing I’ll say when looking at adding something to your leadership development is to determine the type of development that you’re after. Some things to consider are who will be participating and what types of skill sets are needed.

For example, for new participant some of the areas we train on include communication – styles, interpretation, and delivery, utilizing time, energy and outcomes, creating results while feeling good, failure and success, and taking action.

Once there’s a deeper understanding and development with the participant, they become ready to move into more advanced masteries that allow him or her to create coachable environments and lead with techniques and strategies that develop team members toward their own leadership advancements.

Some indicators that our coaching and tools are needed include inconsistent performance, incohesive teams, lacking leadership, turnover rates, low case acceptance, mismanaged time, stress or tension in the practices, lack of clarity in what is wanted or expected, dissatisfaction and negativity, escalating concerns that aren’t being resolved, cultural disharmony, lack of ownership mentality, blaming, excuses, and disengagement.

58: Labels and Leadership

Let's talk about labels and how they impact our leadership, but before we can go down that road we need to do a little review on the system that takes place in our brains with just about every experience that we have - and that is the thought-feeling-action system

We do a really good job of knowing – if we like how we feel or we if we don’t...

Many of us do a moderately good job of knowing exactly what we’re feeling, particularly when we don’t like how we feel – in other words identifying the exact emotion that we’re experiencing when it’s not a good feeling –

And without practice and coaching most of us are pretty ill-equipped to identify the connected thought to each emotion we have

Said differently, we have some blind spots!

I want to talk about what happens in our brains from a scientific perspective so that you can decide how much time, effort, and energy you want to put into mastering what may be a significant bottleneck for you at times.

When we have a new experience, we have a lot of choices about how we’re going to experience it – we get to choose what we think about going into it if we have enough notice, and then throughout the experience we get to decide what to think about and believe about the details of the person, or situation

That initial exposure then becomes our reality – and it becomes a memory that we file away about the person, or situation involved – which can be great, especially, if it’s a positive experience that we’d like to repeat

On the other hand, let’s say that your thoughts about the person or situation were that it was a bit of a bummer, or a total disaster –

Left untouched, that memory also gets filed away, but there’s something that we need to be aware of:

When we land on a conclusion – and file it away – it becomes accessible

And this concept exists in habit formation, so if you’re only half listening, this is a good one to sink your teeth into...
