It's a Bob and Ray Thanksgiving!
Bob and Ray Thanksgiving 1956 Bob and Ray were an American comedy duo whose career spanned five decades. Composed of comedians Bob Elliott (1923–2016) and Ray Goulding (1922–1990), the duo's format was typically to satirize the medium in which they were performing, such as conducting radio or television interviews, with off-the-wall dialogue presented in a generally deadpan style as though it were a serious broadcast.

Our Town - The Campbell Playhouse - Orson Welles
Our Town - The Campbell Playhouse - Orson Welles Our Town is a 1938 metatheatrical three-act play by American playwright Thornton Wilder. It tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover's Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens. Throughout, Wilder uses metatheatrical devices, setting the play in the actual theatre where it is being performed. The main character is the stage manager of the theatre who directly addresses the audience, brings in guest lecturers, fields questions from the audience, and fills in playing some of the roles. The play is performed without a set on a mostly bare stage. With a few exceptions, the actors mime actions without the use of props. Our Town was first performed at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in 1938. It later went on to success on Broadway and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It remains popular today and revivals are frequent

The Lux Radio Theatre. December 22, 1947. "Miracle On 34th Street". Sponsored by: Lux. The story of the real Santa Claus, who goes to work at Macy's toy department. William Keighley hosts from Washington D. C. The story was produced on The Lux Radio Theatre subsequently on December 20, 1948 and December 21, 1954. This is a wonderful story for the whole family in this Christmas season. Miracle on 34th Street begins on Thanksgiving day in New York City and the annual Parade given by Macy’s department store is about to commence to herald in the Christmas season. Away from the crowd are two of the stores public relations staff pleased with the Santa they have employed – the best Santa in Macy’s history. Starring Maureen O’Hara as Doris, John Payne as Fred and Edmund Gwenn as Chris Kringle this radio adaptation of the 20th Century Fox film of 1947 is an absolute delight. + Edmund Gwenn recreates his original role as the real Santa Clause in this delightful 1947 Twentieth Century Fox motion picture success which has become a modern classic.

G.K. Chesterton - Manalive
G. K. Chesterton Manalive Chapters 1 and 2 This is a book in two parts. The first, "The Enigma of Innocent Smith", concerns the arrival of a new tenant at Beacon House, a London boarding establishment. Like Mary Poppins, this man (who is tentatively identified by lodger Arthur Inglewood as an ex-schoolmate named Innocent Smith) is accompanied by a great wind, and he breathes new life into the household with his games and antics. During his first day in residence the eccentric Smith creates the High Court of Beacon; arranges to elope with Mary Gray, paid companion to heiress Rosamund Hunt; inspires Inglewood to declare his love for Diana Duke, the landlady's niece; and prompts a reconciliation between jaded journalist Michael Moon and Rosamund. However, when the household is at its happiest two doctors appear with awful news: Smith is wanted on charges of burglary, desertion of a spouse, polygamy, and attempted murder. The fact that Smith almost immediately fires several shots from a revolver at Inglewood's friend Dr. Herbert Warner seems to confirm the worst. Before Smith can be taken to a jail or an asylum, Michael Moon declares that the case falls under the purview of the High Court of Beacon and suggests that the household investigate the matter before involving the authorities or the press.

Magic - A Fantastic Comedy Play by G.K. Chesterton
Magic - A Fantastic Comedy Play by G.K. Chesterton George Bernard Shaw goaded the already successful essayist and novelist Chesterton into trying his hand at a play, with this 1913 result. The play examines the powers and mysteries of faith, belief, religion, and of course, magic - a mixture that should be familiar from many of his Father Brown stories. The play's success convinced him to write a couple of other later plays

Veterans Day Podcast - Command Performance VJ Day 1945 - Crosby - Hope - Sinatra - Pres. Truman
An amazing program that was broadcast over the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) just after VJ Day in 1945. The show was broadcast live over AFRS stations all over the world. The Command Performance was a regular show on AFRS featuring Hollywood stars. The shows were typically recorded and played on local AFRS stations with the troops. This one was broadcast live on AFRS stations overseas and across the US. The whole show is essentially a prayer to God (who is actually mentioned by name!) Begins with a prayer by the head US Army Chaplain giving thanks “thorough Christ Our Lord, Amen”… Includes an address by President Truman and literally every big Hollywood star of the day... Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles, Dinah Shore, Frances Langford. It even includes Frank Sinatra introducing Bing who sings “White Christmas.”. This show was just after the nuclear bombs were dropped. Gives a hint that America was coming to know her special place in the world – by God’s grace. Hard to imagine anything like this happening today…

Adventures by Morse - You'll Be Dead in a Week
Adventures By Morse – 1944 The title of this series refers to the writer and director of the show, Carlton E. Morse. There were 52 episodes of this thirty-minute adventure series featuring a San Francisco detective, Captain Bart Friday, and his sidekick, Skip Turner. Captain Friday and Skip roamed the world together seeking danger and solving mysteries. The stories told bordered on the supernatural, though there was usually a rational explanation for the superbly written terror-chillers.

I Love a Mystery Podcast - Temple of Vampires - Carlton E. Morse
Carleton E. Morse Classic Serial Adventure! Temple of Vampires Complete Serial I Love a Mystery is an American radio drama series that aired 1939–44, about three friends who ran a detective agency and traveled the world in search of adventure. Written by Carlton E. Morse, the program was the polar opposite of Morse's other success, the long-running One Man's Family. The central characters, Jack Packard, Doc Long, and Reggie York, met as mercenary soldiers fighting the Japanese in China. Later, they met again in San Francisco, where they decided to form the A-1 Detective Agency. Their motto was "No job too tough, no adventure too baffling." The agency served as a plot device to involve the trio in a wide variety of stories. These straddled the genres of mystery, adventure, and supernatural horror, and the plotlines often took them to exotic locales. Over the years, Jack was played by Michael Raffetto, Russell Thorson, Jay Novello, Jim Bannon, and John McIntire. Doc was played by Barton Yarborough and Jim Boles. Reggie was portrayed by Walter Paterson and Tony Randall. The agency's secretary, Jerry Booker, was played by Gloria Blondell. After Paterson committed suicide in 1942, his friend Morse could not bear to recast the role and Reggie was written out of the series. In later shows, Jerry's role was increased, and she replaced Reggie.

The War of the Worlds - Legendary Halloween Mercury Theater Broadcast That Terrified the Nation
Orson Welles Mercury Theater Production of H.G. Wells - The War of the Worlds "The War of the Worlds" is an episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air directed and narrated by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles as an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds (1898). It was performed and broadcast live as a Halloween episode on Sunday, October 30, 1938 over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The episode became famous for causing panic among its listening audience, but the scale of that panic is disputed, as the program had relatively few listeners. The one-hour program began with the theme music for the Mercury Theatre on the Air and an announcement that the evening's show was an adaption of The War of the Worlds. This was followed by a prologue read by Orson Welles which was closely based on the opening of H.G. Wells' novel. The next half hour of the broadcast was presented as typical evening of radio programming which was interrupted by a series of news bulletins. The first few bulletins interrupt a program of dance music and describe a series of odd explosions observed on Mars. This is followed by a seemingly unrelated report of an unusual object falling on a farm in Grover's Mill, New Jersey. Another brief musical interlude is interrupted by a live report from Grover's Mill, where police officials and a crowd of curious onlookers have surrounded the strange cylindrical object. The situation quickly escalates when Martians emerge from the cylinder and attack using a heat-ray, abruptly cutting off the panicked reporter at the scene. This is followed by a rapid series of increasingly alarming news updates detailing a devastating alien invasion taking place around the world. This portion of the show climaxes with another live report describing giant Martian war machines releasing clouds of poisonous smoke in New York City, after which the program took its first break. During the second half of the show, the program shifts to a more conventional radio drama format and follows a survivor dealing with the aftermath of the invasion and Martian occupation of Earth. As in the original novel, the story ends with the discovery that the Martians have been defeated by microbes rather than by humans.

The Four Freedoms - President Franklin D. Roosevelt - State of the Union 1941
The Four Freedoms FDR's State of the Union speech January 1941 The Four Freedoms were goals articulated by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Monday, January 6, 1941. In an address known as the Four Freedoms speech (technically the 1941 State of the Union address), he proposed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy: Freedom of speech Freedom of worship Freedom from want Freedom from fear Roosevelt delivered his speech 11 months before the surprise Japanese attack on U.S. forces in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii that caused the United States to declare war on Japan, December 8, 1941. The State of the Union speech before Congress was largely about the national security of the United States and the threat to other democracies from world war that was being waged across the continents in the eastern hemisphere. In the speech, he made a break with the tradition of United States non-interventionism that had long been held in the United States. He outlined the U.S. role in helping allies already engaged in warfare. In that context, he summarized the values of democracy behind the bipartisan consensus on international involvement that existed at the time. A famous quote from the speech prefaces those values: "As men do not live by bread alone, they do not fight by armaments alone." In the second half of the speech, he lists the benefits of democracy, which include economic opportunity, employment, social security, and the promise of "adequate health care". The first two freedoms, of speech and religion, are protected by the First Amendment in the United States Constitution. His inclusion of the latter two freedoms went beyond the traditional Constitutional values protected by the U.S. Bill of Rights. Roosevelt endorsed a broader human right to economic security and anticipated what would become known decades later as the "human security" paradigm in social science and economic development. He also included the "freedom from fear" against national aggression and took it to the new United Nations he was setting up.

Halls of Ivy Podcast - Jack Benny Visits Ivy College - The Fighting Med Student
Halls of Ivy Jack Benny Visits Ivy Fighting Med Student The Halls of Ivy is an American situation comedy that ran from 1950–52 on NBC radio, created by Fibber McGee & Molly co-creator/writer Don Quinn. The series was adapted into a CBS television comedy (1954–55) produced by ITC Entertainment and Television Programs of America. British husband-and-wife actors Ronald Colman and Benita Hume starred in both versions of the show. Quinn developed the show after he had decided to leave Fibber McGee & Molly in the hands of his protégé Phil Leslie. The Halls of Ivy's audition program featured radio veteran Gale Gordon (then co-starring in Our Miss Brooks) and Edna Best in the roles that ultimately went to the Colmans, who demonstrated a flair for radio comedy during the late 1940s recurring roles on The Jack Benny Program.
