Ep. 106 How to handle the inner critic

Ep. 106 How to handle the inner critic

This week on the podcast I’m talking about the number one issue I see in my clients. The inner critic.

It’s big. Huge.

It’s that fault finding, nit-picking, brain-niggling, mean-ass inner critic.

AKA ‘The shitty committee’.

The inner mean girl (or boy).

Judgey McJudgerson.

You get the picture.

It’s the internal monologue that’s pissing on your parade.

Present every time you speak up in your family, try something new with your hair or attempt to write your bio on a dating app. There every time you fire up Zoom for a work meeting and have to stare at your own face for 50 minutes.

And when things aren’t going to plan, the inner critic can get louder and arsier than ever.

When you get iffy feedback from the work project you gave your all to.

When you hear crickets after an audition or interview.

Or when you miss your pre-paid yoga class because you hit snooze once too many.

Queue an internal rant of Biblical proportions. Not even your ex who cheated on you got this much heat.

Can you relate?

Wouldn’t it be better to just try your best without all the internal chatter holding you back.

In this solo episode of The Calmer You Podcast I’m sharing my top tips for handling the inner critic and moving forwards with more confidence in life.

Meet Dr. Ellie

Today on the Calmer You podcast, I’m talking to Dr. Ellie Cannon. We met on a panel we did together and I loved everything that she was sharing. She’s not only a GP, she’s also an author. Her latest book is all about work, health and the effects that our jobs can have on our mental health. It’s called, Is Your Job Making you Ill?

She’s also columnist for The Mail on Sunday. I love her Twitter feed and approach. She’s very no-nonsense and calls all sorts of things out. I’m not a doctor so I love taking this opportunity to speak with a GP. There are lots of things that I really wanted to get her perspective on.

In this episode

We talked about how common it is for GPS to see patients with stress and anxiety. Hint, it’s an incredibly high number.

We talked about at what point we should go and see our GP if we’re struggling mentally. This has to be one of the most common questions that I get asked. People ask me, what is a normal amount of everyday worries and stress? Also,

I can’t quite believe I’ve carried on for so long. It’s been an amazing experience for me to do this podcast. I started this podcast because it was actually a bit of a mission for me to overcome those last little bits of social anxiety and fears about speaking to people. Especially people I really look up to.

I share about:

* Why I went to the Amazon jungle and what it was like (spoiler: it was intense!)* What I learned from the plant medicine and what you can learn from it too* The risks involved and how I overcame my fears

Hello, and welcome to the Calmer You podcast. This is Chloe Brotheridge your host. I’m a coach, hypnotherapist and author of the
Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl. And I’m welcoming you to the hundredth episode of this podcast. I can’t quite believe I’ve carried on for so long. It’s been an amazing experience for me to do this podcast. I started this podcast because it was actually a bit of a mission for me to overcome those last little bits of social anxiety and fears about speaking to people. Especially people I really look up to.

What it’s meant doing this podcast

It’s been such a great learning experience for that. Not only do I get to speak to people that I really admire and look up to, but, I’m also growing my own confidence by putting myself out there. It’s been really valuable on so many levels. Thank you so much.

Whether you’re joining and listening to my podcast for the first time, or whether you’ve listened since day one, thank you so much for being here. I really appreciate all of your messages and all the times that you let me know that you’re listening that it’s that it’s helped you. It really makes a difference to me. So thank you for that.

Yes, it was a powerful experience

So in this episode, I’m finally getting around to talking about my experience that I had back in December and January of 2019/20. Where I went on two different retreats to experience Ayahuasca medicine from South America.

I have to say I’ve been putting this conversation off. I am feeling a certain amount of trepidation to even be talking about it because of the fact that it is not legal in the UK. It is legal in a lot of South American countries. There is definitely an aspect to it, which is pretty scary, a bit dangerous. And yet, it was such a powerful experience for me, and really did help me in lots of interesting ways.

What you can expect from this episode

I’m going to describe a lot of things about the experience from why I decided to do it, what it was like being in the jungle, the things that I was afraid of, and the insights that I gained.

Disclaimer

I also want to share a disclaimer that I’m not suggesting that anyone else go out and have this experience. There are risks involved. If you’re considering this, please do a lot of research. You hear horror stories about people who go to Peru and find so...

Her work has helped me a lot. These themes are so universal. We get into all sorts of topics. We talk about not feeling good enough. I can relate personally to so much of what Zoe shares in her story and her experiences. I feel like we’ve been on quite a similar path in many ways.

We talk about perfectionism, and Zoe shares about how she’s not letting that hold her back anymore.

I asked her this question, how are you really and she’s really open and honest about that. We even get into the incredibly juicy topic of healing intergenerational trauma, which I am just fascinated by this whole topic.

Intro: Hello, and welcome to the calmer you podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge, I’m a coach, a hypnotherapist and I’m the author of The Anxiety Solution, and Brave New Girl. And this podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest, happiest, and most confident self. In this episode, I am so excited to get to speak to Jody Shield. She is a performance coach, she’s the author of the best selling self-help book “Self-care for the soul,” she’s an inspirational speaker on Ted x speaker and she’s the host of the “Be Electric podcast.” And I hope you will be as inspired as I was by Jody’s infectious positivity and confidence. And we get into interesting topics such as what it means to be in flow.

Being in flow

And maybe you’ve heard of this term you know “being in flow,” it’s
really the state of mind that we want to be in. And we talk about how to
cultivate this more and more in our lives, we get into the topic of money which
still in 2020 is such a taboo topic, but it’s a real passion of Jody’s to speak
about this and to help us to face our money demons and cultivate more abundance
in our lives, and so we get into that topic. We also talk about consciousness

Hello and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. This is your host, Chloe Brotheridge. I’m a coach, a hypnotherapist, and I’m the author of The Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl. And this podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest, happiest and most confident self.

Chloe Brotheridge: So, welcome to this episode. This is a COVID-19 themed episode. Today, after this week, I’m going to be going back to my pre-recorded episodes that I planned, obviously, before this whole situation kicked off. So, perhaps that will be a bit of distraction, a bit more normality to get back to. So, hopefully I’ll look forward to that.

But this week, I’m talking to the wonderful Dr. Frankie Jackson-Spence, who is a GP, and she has been sharing a lot about the facts around COVID-19, and busting a lot of myths and helping people to feel calmer and less anxious by spreading helpful information. So, I really wanted to speak to her about this topic.

So, she shares about how she’s handling it, how her job has changed as a result of this crisis. We talk about the importance of physical distancing. She busts some of the most common myths that she hears and she shares her tips for feeling calm in the face of the situation.

I also want to let you know that I’ve created a new tool kit which is designed to help you to feel calm and resilient in uncertain times. You can check out on my website at calmer-you.com/benddontbreak. So, that’s calmer-you.com/benddontbreak. So, let’s get into the interview with Dr. Frankie.

This episode is sponsored by my favourite active wear brand, Sweaty Betty. They’re all-female design team. So, it’s the best technical fabrics, which means our products perform under the toughest conditions and feel amazing on your skin.

All products are also wearer trialed by female staff to ensure they perform and flatter and fit the female body. If the staff don’t love it, it doesn’t get made.

There are so many active wear brands to shop from, but Sweaty Betty is special because all their products from run and yoga to swim and ski are engineered to last. This is not fast fashion, it’s high quality. And I have several pieces from Sweaty Betty that I’ve had for years and I continue to wear and love.

Sweaty Betty now has a host of sustainable products, including the super sculpt leggings made from post-consumer plastic bottles.

coach, a hypnotherapist, and I’m the author of The Anxiety Solution and Brave
New Girl. And this podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest,
happiest and most confident self.

Chloe
Brotheridge: Thank you so much for listening today. Obviously, I’m so
aware of what an anxious time this is for so many of you. I’ve been having tons
of messages and questions coming through about how to deal with the uncertainty
about coronavirus and all the things that we have to deal with from redundancy
is to not be able to leave the house to lack of social interaction to fear
about our health and the health of our loved ones. There are so many things to
consider right now.

And so, what I normally do is record
podcasts quite a few weeks in advance and I’ve decided to push back the ones I
had scheduled and actually have in place some podcasts that are dealing with
the issues that we’re struggling with today.

So, obviously, I know what an anxious
time they says and I’m going to be planning some online workshops to help you
to feel more resilient and feel more positive in what is, for many people, a
really challenging time.

If you want to hear about that and also download some of the freebies I have on my website, you can go to calmer-you.com/free. I’ve got hypnotherapy mp3 on there, affirmations, worksheets; all designed to help me to be a calmer you. And I’ll also let you know about any events or live workshops I’m doing online.

So, I am chatting on the podcast today to my friend, Toni Jones. She was a guest, maybe a year ago now, on the podcast. She’s the founder of the self-help book club, Shelf Help. And I definitely recommend you check them out. There’s tons for you to get involved in. Even though the in-person meetups aren’t happening for now, she’s doing loads of stuffs online. Definitely check out Shelf Help Club on Facebook and on her website and on Instagram.

I got in touch with Toni because she’d written
a fascinating blog post, all about working from home and the challenges that
can come up for us when it comes to working from home; from being productive to

She has so many useful ideas on helping us to master our mindset and feel better about who we are and dial-up our self-worth, how we can build a life of our dreams, how to become the happiest version of ourselves and really unlocking our fullest potential.

I think this really comes through in this episode with Becki. She shares a lot about her own transformation and the journey that she’s been on to really shifting her mindset and changing her life in quite dramatic ways. We get into this topic of being lit, being lit up, you know turning a light on, this is something that Becki is really focused on helping people with and why for so many of us we can hold ourselves back from really shining brightly and being confident because we are so scared of what other people are going to think. And so she shares a lot about this and how we can overcome those barriers, so that we can just be our most confident selves. We also talk about anxiety.

Becki shares some of practical tools that she helps her own clients with, and we also get the topic of social media and that pressure, and how we can try to not allow social media to take over our lives.

So I would love to send you some free resources to help you become your calmest and happiest, the most confident self, you can head over the calmeryou.com/free, enter your e-mail address there, then I’m going to send you those free resources, mp3s, worksheets, lots of practical tools, and updates about the podcast, and you can get that calmeryou.com/free. Introduction

Chloe: Hello, and welcome to the Calmer You podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge, I’m a coach, a hypnotherapist, and I’m the author of “the anxiety solution and brave new girl,” and this podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest, happiest and most confident self. In this episode, I’m talking to the wonderful Nicky Clinch, and Nicky is such a special person, she came over to my house to recall this episode, we actually live quite close to one another in London, in Hackney, East London. And we sat together on the sofa, and I honestly felt like this conversation was so healing for me, and it really came at the right time for me personally and I really hope it helps here as well.

Nicky is a transformational leader and facilitator, she has studied
integrative counseling and macrobiotics, she is also a spiritual mentor and
it’s her mission in life to help all of us to break free from the confines of
our past traumas, ourselves defeating patterns, and our suffering. So that we
can realize and come home to who we are. So Nicky and I get into lots different
topics, we start off by talking about trauma and how it can be the root of so
many of our issues and how we can start to overcome the traumas that held us
back. Nicky gives us her take on anxiety and where that comes from and what we
can do to start to manage our own anxiety.

And Nicky advice definitely isn’t the standard 3 tips to curing anxiety something that you might read day-to-day, it really does go very very deep and it’s very very powerful. She shares some really moving personal stories about how she’s healed her own trauma, how own experience of plant medicines, her own transformation and how she helps other people to transform. She also shares the incredible story about how she was 50000 words into writing her book, she had publishing deal with Hey house and how she actually scrapped the whole 50000 words and went on a different path and this is incredible for me, as someone who has written a book to let go of 50000 words, that’s just terrifying to me.

So I love this story with Nicky, it was incredibly inspiring. So I would
love to send some free resources to help you grow your confidence, boost your
self-esteem and calm your anxiety, if you want these freebies you can head over
to my website; calmeryou.com/free, put your email address in there and I’ll
send you those freebies right away. So let’s get into the interview with Nicky
clinch.

Nicky Clinch: So we’re rolling.

Ep 91 Find your voice and get out of your head with Caroline Goyder

This week on the Calmer You podcast I speak with voice coach and author of Find Your Voice, Caroline Goyder. She knows a thing or two about how to find your voice and get out of your head.

We chat about:

* What is confidence?* Why nerves are good* How to overcome blushing or shaking when you’re speaking* How to improve your confidence when it comes to speaking* Phone phobia * And lots more!

Transcript

Introduction

Chloe: Hello and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge, I’m a coach, a hypnotherapist and I’m the author of “the anxiety solution, and brave new girl” and this podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest happiest and most confident self. Today on the podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking to Caroline Goyder who is a voice coach, and she’s the author of the new book “Find your voice.” She is also a Ted x. Speaker and her Ted Talk has had 7 and a half million views which is really incredible. In this episode we’re talking all about confidence, particularly confidence when it comes to speaking, whether that’s speaking on a stage, speaking up in a meeting or speaking on the phone.

And this is I hope such a reassuring chat because both Caroline and I
have struggled in this area before, we both admitted to having blushed in the
past. And so it’s really coming from a place of her having experienced the
nervousness and the fear that comes along with speaking, and having learned a
lot about herself, made a lot of progress and she actually gets to help other
people with that as well. So we talk about Caroline’s definition of confidence,
and I think this is really interesting, not what you might be expecting. We
talk about why nerves are actually a good thing and why there’s nothing to be
ashamed about if you do experience nerves before speaking, it’s actually
completely normal and I hope this conversation helped to normalize even more
and how to know there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

We talk about how to overcome the specific things that can hold us back
from speaking like blushing or shaking or speaking to the fast and Caroline
shares lots of tips on growing your confidence in general, when it comes to
speaking, phone phobia and people who experience this will know what I’m
talking about if you’re scared of being on the phone in front of the people in
the office for example or if you’re someone that maybe doesn’t like to answer
the phone when people call, if it’s an unknown number for example, I’m one of
these people by the way.

And we just got into loads of helpful ideas around the topic of speaking
confidence, and finding your voice. So if you want to get some free resources from me on growing your confidence, boosting your self-esteem, calming anxiety, I’ve got loads of freebies on my website for you, if you had over to calmeryou.com/free and to enter your email address there, I’m going to send you mp3’s, worksheet, podcast updates and loads more. So head over to Calmeryou.com/free, so let’s get into the interview with Caroline Goyder.

Chloe: So welcome Caroline, thank you so much for joining me, how are you?

Caroline Goyder: I’m good, pleasure to be here.

Chloe: Please can you tell us what it is you do and how you came to do that you
today?

Ep. 90 This Too Shall Pass with Julia Samuel

This week on the Calmer You Podcast I speak with Julia Samuel, Author of Grief Works and her new book This Too Shall Pass.

We chat about:

* What is the ‘fertile void’?* How busyness stops us from healing * How to handle changes in your life * What to say to someone who is grieving* The particular struggles that millennials face

Transcript

Chloe: Hello, and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge. Welcome. I am a coach, a hypnotherapist, and I’m the author of The Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl.

On today’s Podcast

And today, on the podcast, I’ve got the wonderful Julia Samuel, MBE, who is a psychotherapist, and she’s also the author of two books; Grief Works, and her latest book, This Too Shall Pass, which is all about how to navigate changes. And you know, we’re so scared of change, aren’t we? On one hand, we really want change, we want transformation. And on the other hand, how many of us can get stuck keeping things the same because change just feels too scary, and it feels safer to stick with what we know even though it’s uncomfortable.

So, we
talked about this whole topic of change. We discussed what’s known as the
fertile void, and I love how Julia explains this and how we can cultivate this
in our lives, and it can help us to handle changes in our lives. We talked
about how business stops us from healing and what we need to do instead. We
also get into the topic of grief and what to say to someone who’s grieving and
how to handle that yourself about something that’s affecting you at the moment.
We also touch on the particular struggles that millennials and those of a
similar generation face. So, I want to let you know that I have some free
resources for confidence, self-esteem, and anxiety. If you want to grab those
freebies, head over to my website,
CalmerYou.com/Free, and I’ll send you lots of resources, worksheets,
downloads, updates about the podcast. Head over to CalmerYou.com/Free. So, let’s get into the interview with Julia Samuel.
Welcome, Julia. Thank you so much for joining me. How are you today?

Julia:
Really well. Lovely to meet you, Chloe.

Chloe: Could
you please share with us what it is that you do and how you came to do the work
that you do today?

More about Julia Samuel

Julia: So, I’m a psychotherapist and I’ve been a psychotherapist for 30 years. 25 years I worked in the NHS at a big NHS hospital supporting families when babies died and children died. So, I was the counselor for pediatrics and maternity.

From there, I helped started or established and launched a charity called Child Bereavement UK, which was supporting families when a child died or when a child’s bereaved. From there, I sort of taught a lot and lectured a lot. I’ve gone into private practice in the last few years, about the last five years. And I wrote another book before and this is my second book. So, I’m a seasoned therapist and a new author. So, one is kind of an old hat and the other feels exciting and scary. And I’m not even sure I can call myself an author.

Chloe:
Amazing. And I can’t imagine work more, I don’t know, intense than working with
people that have lost a child. I think that’s incredible that you’ve done that
work. What was that like?

Chloe Brotheridge: Hello and welcome to the ‘Calmer
You’ podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge. I am a coach, a
hypnotherapist and I’m the author of the ‘Anxiety Solution’ and ‘Brave New Girl’.
Thank you so much for listening today. I have an amazing guest this week Shona Vertue.
Shona is known for being a fitness instructor and yoga teacher. But for some
reason, this conversation isn’t actually that much about fitness. We get into
such a varied number of topics. She has had her career so far in the fitness
industry, but she is now studying psychology and so this is a real passion of
hers.

So, we get into topics like her experience of therapy, why it’s totally
okay to have therapy and we talk about things like how to find a therapist. We
talk about something called ‘Attachment Theory’ and you might have heard this
before. Some of us might be anxiously attached for example and it has to do
with things that happened in our childhood. We really get into why there’s
nothing to be ashamed about if you’re somebody that is perhaps needy or
codependent in relationships because it’s not your fault and it can often go
back to these things in childhood. So, we chat about that.

We get into the pressures and boundaries of social media and I also ask her my favorite question to ask people which is. How are you really? I love Shona’s answer this, she’s really honest and open and talks about something that I think a lot of us can relate to particularly at this time of year. So, I think gonna love this episode. I felt like I was chatting to an old friend where I met show know even though we just met ten minutes before.
Chloe: Hello, and welcome to the comedy podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge. I am a coach. I’m a therapist and the author of the Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl. I welcome you to this podcast. Thank you so much for listening. Thanks for being here. I’m talking to the wonderful, brilliant Laura Jane Williams. Laura Jane Williams is an author. She has written several books. The latest of which is called Our Stop. If you’ve read her books or you follow her online, she is just one of these people who has an amazing way of putting words to things that so many of us experience but find it hard to express.

She’s got an incredibly
magnetic personality, an amazing way with words and she talks a lot about
mental health. We get into discussions about the ups and downs of work and this
thing that can happen so often when our life seems really amazing from the
outside. Maybe people are congratulating us on how well things are going and
yet inside, we’re really struggling. This can happen to so many of us and we
chat about this.

We talk about her
experiences of her journey with her mental health and anxiety. We talk about
why it’s so hard to give yourself recognition for things. She shares a practice
and an example of the experiences she’s had where she’s really been able to
give herself that recognition. I think in having this discussion, it also gives
us, the listeners, the permission to give ourselves recognition as well. We
talk about the complexities of adulthood and just get into that whole topic,
which I think all of us will be able to relate to.

I love this conversation
with Laura. I think you’re going to love it as well and get loads from it. So,
I just want to let you know that my amazing, if I do say so myself, confidence
challenge is coming up at the end of February 2020. I would love you to join us.
It’s completely free. It’s a five-day challenge. I am confident that if you
join us, you will notice a change in your life and how you feel.

Here’s what Michelle said,
someone who joined the last on that around there. She said, “This challenge
gave me the courage to go out of my comfort zone and try something new. It also
gave me the nudge I needed to reach out to some old friends and reconnect. More
importantly, it’s made me realize I’m not alone. I now understand it’s okay to
be open, honest and vulnerable.” So many people have said this from this free
challenge that I run, they met new friends. They took action that they wouldn’t
have taken before. They learned things about themselves.

They took a step outside of their comfort zone and I would love all of these things for you and more. You can sign up for free if you head to my website calmer-you.com/confidence. Pop your email address in there and I’ll send you all the details about the challenge. That’s
calmer-you.com/confidence and I hope to see you there. Let’s get into the interview with Laura Jane Williams. Welcome, Laura, thank you so much for joining me. How are you today?

Hello, and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. This is your host, Chloe Brotheridge. I’m a coach and a hypnotherapist and the author of two books, The Anxiety Solution, and Brave New Girl, which is all about how to grow your confidence. So, today I’m going to be sharing with you a number of steps that I think if you follow them, will help you to be calm and your most confident self, to tap into the innate courage that is within you, and start to feel better about doing the things that you want to do, being you in the world, and going outside of your comfort zone.

Journey to becomming a more confident person

And so this is really an area that I’m passionate about talking about having to struggle with my own issues around confidence and self-esteem for so so long and going on a journey to become a more confident person. And I’m not saying that it’s the case that we will just one day emerge like a butterfly out of the chrysalis a new person. But the reality is that it’s a journey. It’s a process. And little by little, we can start to make changes and we can grow. And we can discover more about what’s possible for us and expand what is possible for us. So, I’m going to share with you eight steps for becoming your most confident self.

Believe that you can change

So,
number one is to believe that you can change. And I can’t tell you how
important this step is. It sounds so simple, but actually is an incredibly
powerful shift that so many of us actually need to make before we can start to
make a change. Because when we are in a bad place, when we struggled with
something for a long time, when we feel that we’ve tried a lot of things and
they haven’t worked, it can be so easy to tell ourselves, that we are just not
confident people and we are going to be stuck, feeling this way forever and
there’s not much we can do about it. And yet, and yet, the reality is that
change is always possible. We are always changing your brain is always
changing. Depending on what you do, depending on what you think, what you focus
on, those neurons are being created, old patterns of thinking, old neural
pathways are degrading as you use them less and less. And so [??? 02:18]
neurological level it is possible to change. And there’s that old classic quote
from Henry Ford, “You believe you can or you believe you can’t. And either way,
you’re right.” And this really encapsulates, even though it’s quite a cheesy
quote, by now, it will encapsulate this truth, that when we believe we can
change, it makes it easier to change. And so even if you are just experimenting
