#20 Tabitha Mpamira on the "Shadow Pandemic": Sexual and gender based violence during Covid-19 lockdown- People stuck at home with abusers.

During the 2020 Covid-19 Lockdown, there is a "Shadow Pandemic" going on all over the world. And that is-- the people stuck inside with their abusers. For some survivors, going to school or going to work was one of the hideouts or their outlets away from the perpetrator. Thanks to lockdown measures victims have nowhere to hide. In this episode, I sit down [via zoom] with Tabitha Mpamira to bring light to this epidemic.

Tabitha is a Mother, a Mental Health therapist, & a Gender activist. She is the Founder of EDJA Foundation, not only to combat child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence but also to tell the community, the legal system, and the abusers that “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!”

Long before the #MeToo movement exposed the pain and prevalence of sexual aggression and abuse, Tabitha Mpamira was deeply aware. At the age of 11, she had been a victim herself while living as a Rwandan refugee in neighboring Uganda. It was a traumatic experience that she kept buried until a return visit to Uganda many years later reopened the wound. Everywhere she went, she heard stories of children as young as four being repeatedly targeted for abuse. “Young girls are sexually assaulted frequently and justice is rarely served. Seeing a 5-year-old being resilient, going to school, even with the knowledge that her grandfather infected her with the HIV virus…I was enraged", she recalls.

This was a powerful conversation, I hope it inspires you!

#13 Carol Adams on love, empathy, and compassion. How to inspire purpose and pride in those among us who are less fortunate.

#13 Carol Adams on love, empathy, and compassion. How to inspire purpose and pride in those among us who are less fortunate.

"Give a human a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a human how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime" ~Lao Tsu

Carol Adams has been dubbed the Mother Theresa of the 21st century. Carol is an American born humanitarian and philanthropist who has lived one-third of her life on the African continent.

25 years ago, when Carol was 50 years old, she packed her bags and left her beautiful home state of Hawaii, and decided to devote her life to caring for the orphans, the sick, and the poor in the East African county of Uganda. Carol has put the old fishing rod metaphor to a test and the results are spectacular. For the listeners, who may not be familiar with the fishing rod metaphor, it goes like this “give a human a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a human how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.” Carol has proven this statement to be true with countless real-life success stories.

As she celebrates her 25th anniversary doing this work, many of us, her sons and daughters of the heart prosper around the world. At 75 years old, she has helped thousands of children in need with a helping hand to become strong functioning and contributing members of their communities, nations, and the world.

Full disclosure, I along with thousands of other humans beings around the world would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for the tireless work of Carol Adams.

Carol is a living legend and has truly lived her extraordinary life practicing love, empathy, and compassion.
It was such an honor and a privilege to sit and speak with my real-life hero.

#10 Cheryl Perera on Child sexual exploitation in times of COVID-19, and the time she went undercover as a trafficked kid to get Pedophiles off the streets.

"The willingness to put it all on the line and take risks is how you  change the world " ~ Cheryl Perera

Cheryl is a Canadian children’s rights advocate and the Founder and President of OneChild, the first organization in the world empowering a youth-led movement against the sexual exploitation of children (SEC) through education, advocacy, survivor care, and survivor empowerment.

At age 16, Cheryl learned about SEC in high school and was filled with anger and passion to eradicate this crime.  At 17,  she embarked on a solo, fact-finding mission to her native Sri Lanka to investigate child exploitation. Wanting to obtain an insider’s look into the child sex trade, she partnered with the National Child Protection Authority and played the main role of the decoy—a 15 -old child sex trade victim-- in a STING operation that resulted in the successful apprehension of a  child sex perpetrator. For her bravery and achievement, Cheryl was offered the position of President of Sri Lanka’s Nominee on Child Protection.

At 19, she founded OneChild, which has positively impacted the lives of 79, 000 child survivors, at-risk children, social workers, law enforcement, judges etc. in 11 countries.   As a pioneer in the movement against SECTT in Canada, her career spans over a decade and 22 countries where she has joined surveillance operations on cases involving the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism (SECTT); lobbied across private, public, and civil society organizations to increase action against SECTT and child sex trafficking; and provided shelter and long-term comprehensive care to hundreds of victims in Asia.

Cheryl is a sought-after speaker and has shared the stage with Heads of State, UN Secretary-Generals and Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. Her work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Al-Jazeera, CNN, Financial Times of London etc.

Cheryl holds a MAS in Children Rights, University of Geneva and a B.A. (Hons) in Ethics, Society, and Law; Political Science and Women’s Studies, University of Toronto.  She is also a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Oxford’s Executive Education programs in Transformational Leadership and Public Policy.

She is the recipient of over 28 awards in Canada and abroad including 2018 Order of of Ontario; 2017 L’Oreal Canada Women of Worth Award; 2016 World Economic Forum Award; 2006 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award; 2006 World of Children Founder’s Award; and 2005 Canada’s Top 20 Under 20, among many others.

#4 Amanda Palmer on how to be bold and ask for what you want

#4 Amanda Palmer on how to be bold and ask for what you want

Rock star, crowdfunding pioneer, and TED speaker Amanda Palmer knows all about asking. She believes we shouldn't fight the fact that digital content is freely shareable — and suggests that artists can and should be directly supported by fans.

The singer-songwriter-blogger-provocateur, known for pushing boundaries in both her art and her lifestyle, made international headlines raised nearly $1.2 million via Kickstarter (she’d asked for $100k) from nearly 25,000 fans who pre-ordered her new album. But the former street performer, then Dresden Dolls frontwoman, now solo artist hit a bump the week her world tour kicked off. She revealed plans to crowdsource additional local backup musicians in each tour stop, offering to pay them in hugs, merchandise and beer per her custom. Bitter and angry criticism ensued (she eventually promised to pay her local collaborators in cash). And it's interesting to consider why. As Laurie Coots suggests: "The idea was heckled because we didn't understand the value exchange -- the whole idea of asking the crowd for what you need when you need it and not asking for more or less."

Amanda views her recorded music as the digital equivalent of street performing, she says: “I firmly believe in music being as free as possible. Unlocked. Shared and spread. In order for artists to survive and create, their audiences need to step up and directly support them.”

Amanda's non-fiction book, The Art of Asking, digs deeply into the topics. Her TEDTalks have been viewed over 12 million times.

Enjoy this awesome conversation.

#2 Guy Winch on how to boost your Mental and Emotional health

#2 Guy Winch on how to boost your Mental and Emotional health

"Mental health is about diagnosable conditions like depression and anxiety. Emotional health is about common experiences like loneliness, failure, and heartbreak, the non-diagnosable stuff."  - Guy Winch, Ph.D.

Guy is considered to be a leading advocate for integrating the science of emotional health into our daily lives, workplaces and education systems. He is an in-demand keynote speaker who brings the latest research findings in emotional health to organizations, companies, and events worldwide. His expertise in managing the psychological challenges of daily life, building emotional resilience, increasing productivity and functionality, improving the workplace and personal relationships, enhancing communication, and maximizing well-being and life satisfaction, coupled with his sharp humor and personable delivery make his talks, workshops, and presentations as entertaining and memorable as they are substantive and practical.

Guy received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from New York University and has given 3-TEDtalks viewed over 25 million times. He is the author of 3 books: “Emotional First Aid,” “How To Fix A Broken Heart,” “The Squeaky Wheel,” a blog, and an advice column "Dear Guy." He believes that we favor our physical health over our emotional health, and as a psychologist, he finds that unacceptable. He believes that our physical health and our emotional health are the twins of our general wellbeing, and as such, we should treat them equally.

"Every breakdown is a seed to a breakthrough" - Lynne Twist

For more than 50 years, Lynne Twist has been a recognized global visionary committed to alleviating poverty, ending world hunger, and supporting social justice and environmental sustainability. The extraordinary work that she has done and the life she has lived have changed millions of lives. She is the author of the book “The Soul of Money.” This book has transformed the way that many people think about and relate to money. Lynne has won many awards -- too many to mention! She is a sought-after speaker worldwide and has co-presented and shared the stage with some of the most influential thought leaders of this century... People like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Oprah, Desmond TUTU. and Mother Teresa.

When I was thinking about who to invite to open up the conversation about gratitude, (and selfishly, as a treat for my 36th birthday,) I really wanted to have Lynne Twist on the show. What initially started as a mere dream became a reality! She is a delight. In our conversation, we dig into how to bring forth an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just human presence on the planet, and, much more.

Believe me when I say that Lynne's wisdom and delivery is well worth your time!

Enjoy!
