Chris: [00:00:00] Sonic pasts is a podcast about anecdotal stories with a deeper meaning. Our first guest is Tim Stephenson.

Tim: [00:00:08] Hi, I'm Tim I'm English, but I live most of the time in Bali. I make pottery. I dance. I, uh,

Chris: [00:00:19] Write. Tim is a writer and like any good writer; he has inspiration.

Tim: [00:00:24] And it's been something since I was 20, I wanted to write and I knew it was going to be about me; and I'm 58. It's taken me a long time to get there.

Chris: [00:00:33] So without further ado, here's Tim Stevenson's shaving.

Tim: [00:00:41] I had a memory this morning. As I shaved, I remembered my dad. I remembered him when I was little, watching him; longing for the day when I could do the same to be a man - to shave. He was suddenly vivid.

He used a bristle brush with an aging worn [00:01:00] wooden handle to work the soap to a creamy lather, the soap white and ungent sat in a little round white cracked ceramic dish on the bathroom window sill. When the brush was loaded, he pasted the foam onto his neck and cheeks. He had a large raised, deep, dark brown mole on the side of his neck, the size of my thumbnail.

He told me and later his seven grandchildren, that it was a scar, an old war wound, not a mole. As a young man, he'd fought red Indians and had been shot in the neck by an arrow. He survived, just, by the skin of his teeth. The legacy; the dark raised skin. We, open mouthed, were in awe of his bravery, courage and adventure.

He'd fought real red Indians in red Indian territory. None of us ever doubting the honesty of this strong man.
