Couch to Couch

By Chuck Leblanc

Making Therapy Make Sense. There are so many different styles or types of therapy from CBT, to Person Centered, Solution Focused, Emotional Focused, Narrative, blah blah blah. It's hard enough to pick up the phone and call someone for help, let alone interview and try different therapists until you find the right fit. This podcast is all about helping you meet different types of therapists, different types of therapy styles, different philosophical backgrounds, and hear them talk about real issues and tools you can use along the way.

Anxiety, Stress and What it has to do with the Nervous System

Anxiety, Stress and What it has to do with the Nervous System

In today's episode, I explore my own thoughts on anxiety and stress, and how they affect the nervous system and the body as a whole. This episode will also help the listener tune in to how their bodies gear up to protect them in events that feel threatening. This is the first episode of a sister podcast which will take place once a month alongside Couch to Couch: Making Therapy Make Sense. This sister podcast is called "Huh? That's Interesting!" The purpose of the series is to give listeners a closer look at how I approach therapy, what current research I am exploring, and to give a clearer understanding of what interesting things inform my counselling practice. This series will explore areas such as Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, and anything else I may find interesting along the way.

Enjoy.

Season One Finale: Trauma Therapy panel discussion with Meagan Cumming RP, Jennifer Jurkofsky RP, and Ashley Ho RP(Qualifying)

Welcome to the Season One finale of Couch to Couch. In this special episode, I invited three guests from our top previous episodes to discuss a common theme that had been running throughout Season One: trauma. The guests are Meagan Cumming RP, Jennifer Jurkofsky RP, and Ashley Ho RP(Qualifying). In today’s episode we covered everything from what trauma is, how it affects the body, and how it shows up in a person’s life, to how it's treated in therapy from three different perspectives. These perspectives included somatic experiencing, holistic, person-centered, and cognitive processing therapy. Finally, we discussed the second most common theme that ran across Season One, which was the therapeutic relationship and how it is used to help our clients when working with trauma.

In today’s episode I had the great fortune to speak with Brandi Riddoch, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) from New Brunswick. In this episode we dove deep to discuss substance use, addictions, and the stigma facing those affected. Specifically, we spent time discussing the therapeutic relationship with respect to substance use clients; how the stigma can sometimes enter into therapy through the therapist themselves and the harmful effects that can have. Afterwards, we discussed the importance of the therapist to maintain what Carl Rogers would describe as an empathetic, congruent, and nonjudgmental safe space for clients that holds a deep respect for their personal autonomy and agency.

Pride, Shame, and The Lens of Care with Alex Mateas

Pride, Shame, and The Lens of Care with Alex Mateas

In today's episode, Alex Mateas and I explore pride, shame, and the lens of care. Specifically, we discuss the shame that comes with dealing with pain and injury. We discuss the difficulties men have in seeking help when injured and in dealing with the injuries on an emotional level. Alex and I explore how pride can use shame to keep us from seeking help. We also discuss how much of this shame stems from not wanting to be a burden on others, which is related to how men in our society are taught to be fixers, providers, and protectors. These identity characteristics focus men's attention on other people in their need to serve their families, which can limit their ability to care for themselves. This is what we call the lens of care, wherein the lens is usually focused on others instead of ourselves - leading to discomfort when we need to help ourselves.

Anxiety, Couples counselling, Narrative and Attachment Theory

In today's episode I speak with Shannon Sweeting-Woods RSW about Anxiety, Couples Counselling, Narrative and Attachment Theory. Throughout today's episode we discuss how therapy can help a client build a different kind of relationship with the problem they are facing. A relationship that can help instead of hinder who the want to be and where the want to go. We discuss the use of externalization in Narrative therapy to help build an understanding that the person is not the problem the problem is the problem and how to understand what it means to be stuck and what to do about it. We also discuss Attachment theory how it can combine with the use of Narrative therapy and what benefits this can have with couples looking to mend difficulties in their relationship.

During that conversation I will also talk about the 3 core conditions as developed by Carl Rogers and help you to gather up some important questions to ask your therapist within your first two sessions. In this episode we also dive into my first session as a client in therapy where I undergo Jungian Analysis which is a form of therapy that deals with the conversation between our conscious mind and the unconscious mind through dream work.
