TRANSCRIPT

Chuck Solomon: Hey, Victoria. How are you

Victoria Myers: today? Hi, Chuck. I'm great. Thank you.

Chuck Solomon: Can you please tell listeners a little bit about yourself and your company and your role at the company?

Victoria Myers: Sure, and thank you for the opportunity to share a little bit about my story. I have more than 20 years in recruiting and talent acquisition.

Way back when, and after 20 years, you don't, you don't count after that. It tells your age. But way back when, I started off in the agency side of recruiting, and I did a split desk of sales and recruiting. And then basically just kind of really felt that I liked the recruiting side of life more. I felt like it was it met an internal need of mine that I wanted to help people.

And I felt like I was helping people find jobs. So that was very rewarding for me. So I just continued that path and then when I joined Amdocs about four and a half years ago, I joined as the North America talent acquisition manager, and I was leading the strategy and the team specific to filling all the open positions in North America. After about a year and a half, I had the opportunity to then move into a director level role, which is a, the regional lead over Americas.

And for us, that means now managing the North America team, as well as the Central and Latin America teams. I had managers who reported to me and then they had teams. There was a whole structure to it. Then we really went on, on a quest of this would have been at the end of 2021, early 2022 of thinking through how do we want to grow?

As a company, how do we want to grow within talent acquisition? So I led a little project team thinking through talent attraction and where are we today and where do we want to be in the future and what are the, what are the pain points and the gaps? And through that, we've made a lot of recommendations of how we wanted to improve.

Transcript:

Chuck Solomon: Hey, Martha. How are you this afternoon? Good. Chuck. How are you? I'm doing well. Could you please tell listeners a little bit about Martha, the company you work for and your current role?

Martha Angle: Sure. I'd love to. First again, thank you for, for having me on. My name is Martha Angle. I am the VP of talent management and inclusion.

I have one stream software. I've been with OneStream almost nine years now and seeing this startup really kind of grow from a scrappy startup into now an accelerated growth company. So we've grown from when I started about 30 employees to now north of 1300. So the growth has been pretty cool over the years, almost a decade.

And I've got a lot of stories to tell depending on how much time you got. But yeah, this has definitely been home for me for a very long time. Yeah. And personally I'm a mom, I have a 10 year old and a 12 year old, two awesome kids at home. And yeah, I'm excited to, to share a little bit about what my experience has been.

Chuck Solomon: Well, I appreciate it. We're, I'm actually not even sure where you live, where do you live, where are you calling

Martha Angle: in from today? I'm in Birmingham, Michigan, actually. So that's where OneStream’s headquarters is. That's where I'm calling in from today. So

Chuck Solomon: tell me, how did you get into this talent

Martha Angle: space? So I got started in human resources in general right out of college.

So my, my degree was in English and philosophy and bringing those sort of two things together, I was able to, to talk a little bit about the employee experience and, and help in making decisions and, and writing, you know, strong communications. And so that's where I started actually with what was OneStream's predecessor, Upstream.

Kyle Connors: Doing great, Chuck. Thanks for having us. Yeah,

Chris Connors: doing doing great. Happy to, happy to be here with you, Chuck.

Chuck Solomon: I appreciate you both taking the time to talk today.

, I always have good conversations with you guys, and I have no doubt this will be, the same. I wanted to talk about, the problems that you are finding related to Candidate experience, and then also, what's going on in the marketplace that you're seeing, because I know you're having lots of conversations with talent leaders .

So I want to hear about what you're seeing and then the problems as such, but I wanted you both to share a bit about your founder story because I think it's, pretty interesting.

Kyle Connors: Well, first off, we're we always like to introduce ourselves as we're co founders, but we're also brothers.

So. We you know, we've known each other basically our entire lives. I come from a, a technical background. So I come from being VP of engineering, VP of products, cto. And a big part of my career has always been building out engineering teams, trying to, you know, find the best you know, engineers and product managers and designers to work at whatever company I was at and.

You know, it was always such a, struggle to compete against, , big tech and top tech out there, right? You really had to find whatever, , possible kind of edge you could. And really uncovered over my career is just how important Candidate experience was , with attracting and winning over top talent.

Chuck Solomon: Hi Rhona, how are you today?
Rhona Barnett-Pierce: I'm good Chuck. How are you?
Chuck Solomon: Very good, thank you. Can you tell listeners a little bit about yourself and your current role at your company?
Rhona Barnett-Pierce: Sure. So first of all, thank you so much for having me candidate. Absolutely. Candidate experience is really one of my favorite things to chat about.
I'm Rhona Pierce, like you said. I'm a former software engineer and project manager turned talent acquisition leader. I've been in TA full-time, officially since 2017. Mm-hmm. Unofficially long before that. Sure. I'm current, I'm currently the director of recruiting operations at Leaf Group, which means that I oversee the.
Full recruiting process at leaf, everything from candidate experience, employer branding, sourcing all, all of the fun stuff. Sure. Many people haven't heard about Leaf Group. Leaf Group is a portfolio of media and e-commerce brands. Sure. Mostly in the lifestyle category. Some of our most notable brands are live Strong, well and good society, six Sachi Art.
Most of the roles that we hire for are editorial marketing, software engineering, basically any role that you would imagine is needed to support a media or e-commerce
company. Gotcha. So media company, not an arborist. Yes,
exactly.
Chuck Solomon: Gotcha. What got you started in this talent acquisition space?
Rhona Barnett-Pierce: I love this question because the answer is definitely not.
This is what I always dreamt of doing and went to school for. Yeah. Like most of the TA professionals that I know, I literally fell into ta. I was trying to solve the problem, the hiring problem we were having. Mm-hmm. At one of the companies I was working at at the time, I was an operations manager.

Chuck Solomon:  Hey Haley, how are you today?

Haley Sasser: I'm great. How are you?

Chuck Solomon: I'm doing well. I wanted to thank you for, this is your second time. You're a two timer here on the Candidate Experience Podcast. We recorded back in November of 2021, so like a year and a half ago, and I will. Definitely put the notes or the link in the notes to this episode to your previous one, which I thought was great.

I think you had some great things to share. I especially like the fact that you, you talked about. What you could do for the candidate experience in a small, medium, and large. It's like ordering off a menu, right? Yeah. Small, medium, or large. Mm-hmm. So I would encourage listeners to, to go back and listen to that.

Cause I think what you said then still applies to today. [00:01:00] But before we get, yeah, sure. Yeah. Before we get rolling, can you please introduce yourself to listeners?

Haley Sasser: Yes, so my name is Haley Sasser. I live in Tampa, Florida, and I have almost nine years of experience in the employer brand and recruitment marketing space.

And most recently, the past two years in internal communications and, you know, employee engagement. And so some of the things I've done and have. Really passionate about are, you know, e V P development careers, websites, and revamping those and really enabling talent acquisition teams with recruitment marketing content, and Email templates that align with, with the brand and with the voice of the company, and of course reputation management as well.

Chuck Solomon: Hi Lauren. How are you today? I'm good, Chuck. How are you? I'm doing well. Could you please let listeners know a little bit about yourself, your company, and, and your role?

Lauren Ahrens: Yeah, for sure. So I'm Lauren. I lead global recruiting for a company called H1. We're a Series C startup focused on global healthcare data.

Lauren Ahrens: We actually have a software platform that speeds decision making and insights for users in life sciences and pharmaceutical industries and so forth. And I've been in recruiting for the last 10 plus years, focused mostly on building data and technology enabled recruiting teams and building great candidate experiences.

Chuck Solomon: Awesome. What got you started in working in this talent space?

Lauren Ahrens: Yeah. Honestly, I really recognized it was, it's interesting, it was actually 2008 when mm-hmm. You know, the, the first sort of first real economic crisis I had right. Of my own personal career.  Right. And I was working for a financial services startup at the time.

Lauren Ahrens: And what I noticed is that there were a lot of very unseasoned managers who really struggled to sort of keep a lid on their stress and noticed how it influenced their team somewhat negatively. And I sort of became very kind of hyper aware of how hiring decisions impacted the culture of a company.

Lauren Ahrens: Sure. Super important to me. Not just the candidate experience, but also how it leads into the employee experience. And I wanted a hand in helping shape that.

Chuck Solomon: That's great. I asked that same question of all my guests and I, it is the same question, but I get really unique answers. I think not, not once have I had someone say, well, I was in high school and my guidance counselor said, you should be a recruiter.

Lauren Ahrens: A recruiter. I went to college and got a degree in recruiting. Said no recruiting leader ever.

Chuck Solomon Hey, Dustin. How are you this afternoon?

Dustin Laycock Hey. Doing great. Doing great. How are you?

Chuck Solomon I'm well. Can you let our listeners know a little bit about yourself and your current role and a little bit about the company you work for?

Dustin Laycock Yeah. First off, thanks for. Thanks for having me. Sure. This is definitely something I'm really passionate about and I love talking about. So I was happy to jump at this opportunity. Yeah. So my name is Dustin Laycock. I have been an accidental recruiter for going on 14 years now. I currently work for a company called Zillow. Zillow is really more of a more of a scale up and a startup. I mean, we've been around ten years, so I feel like we're kind of further along on that maturity curve, but we're still smaller. We're about 55 people today, and what we do is that we enable front line workers or desk workers through communication solutions such as Push-to-talk. So we're really big on helping out of all types of industries. We're not industry specific. One cool thing that we do do is we offer our platform for free to first responders. And in fact, last year I think we gave out something around $3.2 million worth of free licenses to first responders. So. Before this.
Chuck Solomon Yeah. That's awesome though, that you're that you're doing that. I mean, anything that supports first responders is is really good in my book.

Chuck Solomon Hey, Carrie, how are you today?

Carrie Corcoran I am doing great, Chuck. Thanks so much for having me on your podcast. I appreciate it.

Chuck Solomon Yeah, Thank you for joining. Before we get started, can you share a little bit about yourself and what you're up to now?

Carrie Corcoran Absolutely. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with my husband and my French bulldog, cosmopolitan girl. She's our burr baby. Yep. We're one of those couples and I have been in employer brand recruitment, marketing and talent attraction for over ten years now. And I'm a strategic senior level employer, employer, brand leader, talent, matchmaker, and connector. And I always lead with a marketing mindset. I truly enjoy a data driven approach to design and also deliver game changing, integrated employer brand programs for companies. And right now I am exploring consulting engagements or part time contract opportunities as well as full time employee opportunities. So I'm I'm open to what is out there and want to make sure that it's the best fit for me as well as the company. So I'm I'm taking my time to decide what's right.

Chuck Solomon Awesome. When I look at your profile online on LinkedIn, you've either worked for or consulted with a number of big brand names Heartland, Hilton, Subway to name a few. But what got you started in the talent space?

Chuck Solomon

Hey Kaitlyn, how are you today?

Kaitlyn Tarpey Borea

Hi, Chuck, I'm so great. How are you?

Chuck Solomon

I'm doing well, Happy Friday to you. I appreciate you taking the time to have a conversation with me and share your insights and knowledge with my listeners. But before we get started, can you let listeners know a little bit about yourself?

Kaitlyn Tarpey Borea

Sure. Well, thanks for having me first. My name is Kaitlyn, I run the talent function at TOMO, which is a fin tech startup. It's about two and a half years old. But prior to working in the startup world, I had a really fun career in fashion and in finance before that. So I've been on the HR recruitment side and many different industries, but have always found myself within the recruitment space. That's where my heart is.

Chuck Solomon

Gotcha. I totally understand.  How did you know how did you get into this? Talent? People attraction space?

Kaitlyn Tarpey Borea

It's such a good question, because I feel that so many people say they fall into it. For me, I was I am the daughter of an accountant and a math teacher. And so I knew from a very early age that I did not want to work with numbers. I wanted to work with people. And so I knew at least that much going through undergrad. And really, when I think about what recruitment is, it's matchmaking but it's also being an ambassador for a company for a brand for an organization that, that you're passionate about. And I've had some good practice, in situations like that I grew up in the pageant circuit. And you know, it's very natural to me to connect people, and to guide people to into whatever it is that their heart's calling them for. So there's a little bit of I knew I wanted to do with people versus numbers. And then just sort of a circumstance where I fell into an assignment, I ended up being successful in that assignment. And then my career really took off after that.

Emily Kaija

Oh, I'd be happy to. So I work for XWP as a candidate experience specialist. And my focus is to deliver exceptional experiences for everyone who participates in the hiring process at x WP web agency and we deliver enterprise level solutions with WordPress technology. A lot of our clients are publishing entities like magazines, newspapers, who need a really strong and versatile content management system. So we worked with Rolling Stone magazine, News Corp, Australia, a Variety magazine, a lot of companies like that WordPress is an open source software, which means that anybody can use it, modify it, make it better. And it powers about 40% of the websites on the intranet. So actually, a lot of people probably see WordPress sites every day and may not even realize it. But right. We work with digital partners as well like Google and Pantheon and automatic to develop new technologies and plugins to share with the WordPress community.

And I lead the employment brands team, and I am on the talent acquisition team reporting to our VP of talent.

Chuck Solomon  0:45

What led you into working into this talent or people space? What's your backstory?

Rosie Martinson  0:51

It's a really great question. Because as as you know, I'm sure being in this world, some people are in HR, and some are marketing. And some as recruiters, there's lots of different ways to get into this space. And so, I actually am a marketer at heart, I've been in marketing for over 15 years, I have a public relations advertising degree. And about seven or eight years ago, as I was working in healthcare marketing, I was looking for something new, and I wanted to grow my career and work for a larger company. And so, I came across a demand generation manager role. And, you know, if if, you know, marketing demand generation is a marketing term, and it's a marketer that is generating demand, or a company's product or service, right, that you are marketing to your audience. Well, I joined as demand generation manager on the recruiting team...

Hey, Chuck I'm great, how's it going?

Chuck Solomon  0:05

It's going very well. Thanks for being a guest on the podcast today.

Omer Molad  0:10

Thanks for having me.

Chuck Solomon  0:12

Appreciate it. So before we get into talking about candidate experience, can you give like a, you know, quick overview of sort of how how'd you get into the hiring industry?

Omer Molad  0:24

Sure. So this startup that I'm a co founder of Vervoe is really my first kind of official foray into the hiring industry. Prior to that, I, my only experience in hiring was being hired or trying to get hired and, and hiring people as a hiring manager, which, which I did a lot of, in a past life, but I was not a recruitment practitioner in any in any form before starting this company.

Chuck Solomon  1:02

Sure What, you know, you talk to a lot of companies out there, and I'm, like, you've seen a lot of, sort of can't good candidate experience bad candidate experience? Like, what are you seeing, like, where companies are getting candidate experience? Where they're doing it well?

Omer Molad  1:22

Unfortunately, it's the minority of companies that, that do it? Well, in my opinion, and, sure, yeah, and if I had to really sort of boil it down to something really simple. A good candidate experience is an experience that sets a candidate up for success and, and gives them an opportunity to, to put their best foot forward. And a bad candidate experience is one that creates obstacles for the candidate, and makes it difficult for them to put their best foot forward. And all the rest is really just detail. Right?

Absolutely. So my first job was for state government, just kind of stable career good benefits, you know, defined retirement, I started out in an administrative role. And I could see different people doing their jobs. And I really liked the way HR, just the people interaction part of it. And so what I did was I put a bug in my supervisors ear, that's really that's really a like route I feel like I would be good at and I would love to take, and it just so happened that are all around HR accounting person left, and I was able to take on some duties. And the first thing I did was a sexual harassment training, the interaction that I had with the group, it really put a fire in me. And I said to myself, this is what I'm going to do. And I started looking for a job in an HR department, still in a state agency, and I got one that wasn't 1999. And I've never looked back since then.

Chuck Solomon  2:00

Awesome. I love it bug in the ear.
