Thor: Love and Thunder CB - S5EP06

Thor: Love and Thunder CB - S5EP06

Thor: Love and Thunder starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, and Taika Waititi who also Directed the movie.

Thor is lost and trying to find his purpose. He meets up with an old flame, and then becomes the target of a man called Gorr the God Butcher. In a story not too dissimilar to Infinity War, instead of a McMuffin used to wipe out half of life, Gorr uses a McMuffin to kill all the gods. Jane, the old flame, takes the shattered Mjolnir (from Thor Ragnorock) and uses it to become “The Mighty Thor,” but at a cost.

I feel like what makes this movie so enjoyable, is also what I don’t like about it at the same time. Thor Ragnorock had a really good balance of comedy and seriousness. And with this latest iteration, Taika Waitit leaned even heavier into the comedy. While I laughed at all the clever humor, I wished that the movie took itself a little more seriously.

The shattered Mjolnir brought some new excitement for the action scenes. I liked how it acted like the classic hammer we all know and love, but it also had a few new tricks up its sleeve.

The inclusion of Guns’n’Roses to the soundtrack felt like it fit in really well. There were 3-4 songs sprinkled throughout the film, including November Rain — which I despised growing up because you would listen to it constantly and the song is 37 minutes long. But here, it isn’t too bad.

The biggest thing this movie introduces to the overall MCU is the introduction of The Gods. Any and all deities that we know of, and some from the comics too, all seem to dwell in Omnipotent city, a city that looks like what a city of gods would look like. Pristine and clean, and plentiful. They all seem to be living lavishly, which is where Gorr’s motivations come from. While he and many creatures throughout the cosmos worship and suffer(including his daughter who dies of thirst), the gods drink wine and party with no concern or care for those who worship them.

I was excited to see the inclusion of the character of eternity, but at the same time, he didn’t do anything on screen. He was almost like a statue. While in concept, a creature like that, probably would just be stoic, but at the same time, I hoped to see more interaction.

2 tickets, definitely want to see this again, with any hope I will. My criticisms of this movie are small and not enough to take me out of the latests installment in the MCU.

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness CB - S5EP04

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness CB - S5EP04

Dr. Strange finally gets a sequel after appearing in the MCU 4 times already. This time as the title says, he dives right into the Multiverse… of Madness. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochiti Gomez, Rachel McAdams, and featuring Patrick Stewart, Anson Mount, Lashana Lynch, Hayley Atwell, and John Krasinski as members of the Illuminati. Directed by Marvel Movie alum Sam Raimi.

This movie jumps right into the action with a multiversal variant of Dr. Strange trying to save America Chavez from a demon. Here it shows she can open up portals that allow her to travers the multiverse, albeit without any way to intentionally navigate it.

She inevitably runs into the Dr. Strange we all know and love, and he tries to protect her. Realizing that the forces following Chavez are a form of witchcraft, they go to the only witch they know, Wanda Maximoff. Unbeknownst to them, it was Wanda all along… not so much Agatha. No catchy song to go along with this one. Wanda is being warped by the Darkhold, a book of dark magic, and is searching for a way to reunite with her kids she lost at the end of the Disney+ series WandaVision.

This movie is fun, exciting, and just what the Marvel doctor ordered. Fans of Sam Raimi will no doubt see some of his signature filmmaking in this movie including his car's cameo, and of course Bruce Campbell. There is a lot to enjoy about this movie, but for better or worse, the most notable is the Illuminati. Seeing Patrick Stewart as Professor X again was a delight. Everyone was speechless, pun intended, when Anson Mount reprised his roll as Black Bolt. But the best kept secret and biggest surprise was John Krasinski, who’s already been fan casted into the roll of Reed Richards, showed up as Reed Richards!! The big question is, will we see these characters again with the same actors?

The Brothers Brotastic give this film 2 tickets. We are on board with the MCU through and through.

Ambulance - CB - S5EP03

Ambulance - CB - S5EP03

Ambulance, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González, had all the ingredients of a Michael Bay film:
Beautiful cinematography
Shaky camera work
Fast editing
Real stunts and action
Extremely attractive people in everyday jobs.

Just Because it has all the same ingredients as other classic Bay films such as The Rock, Transformers, or The Island, doesn’t make the movie good. I think he left out a few eggs for something.

I had a blast watching this movie, but not in the way it was intended. I don’t remember the last time I laughed out loud so hard from my gut.

The premise starts out strong and ripe for a Michael Bay film; a heist gone wrong, a cop shot, and the only way out is in the ambulance transporting said cop. They need to keep the officer alive, so they take a paramedic hostage, and chaos ensues.

After this point, for me the logic of the movie never made sense, and made it difficult to take this movie seriously, at least as serious as you can take a Michael Bay movie. I knew going in that the action would be over the top, the camera would never stop moving, and actors would deliver lines like David Caruso on CSI (yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

What ultimately did it for me was the contradicting logic. These guys are fighting as hard as they can to keep this wounded officer alive because, if they become cop killers, they know there is no way they will make it out alive, or they’ll go to prison for the rest of their life. But, during the pursuit, as police chase them around LA, they don’t hold back on firing guns at helicopters and police cars, and ramming them off bridges at 70 miles per hour.

Likewise, the Police keep saying they have to be careful because a brother in blue is on board, yet they use the harshest tactics that could easily kill everyone in the ambulance.

The best way to describe this movie is like the video game Grand Theft Auto, with a 5 star wanted level. In the game the more “wanted” you are, the harder the police are on you. At 5 stars, swat and military come after you, and they’re hell bent on killing you with extreme prejudice.

The drone cinematography set this movie apart from other Michael Bay movies. Many shots featured stunning visuals, but some seemed unnecessary. I doubt this is the last we’ve seen of the excessive drone shots

Occasionally I can get behind over the top action and illogical sequences, however, what ultimately hurt this film was its depiction of police violence, and violence on police. Our nation is divided right now with situations like what happened to George Floyd. And even in Tulsa, where the Brothers Brotastic are from, there’s a controversial police encounter involving the shooting death of Terence Crutcher, as well as the death of Tulsa Police Sergeant Craig Johnson who’s killer had been convicted the week we saw this movie. These situations, along with countless others across the nation made some scenes in Ambulance hard to watch, and they take you out of the movie at times.

Andrew gives this movie 1 ticket; he’s glad he saw the movie in theaters, but is not rushing to see this movie again anytime soon.

Philip gives this movie 2 tickets; although he sees the flaws that Andrew sees, they are not enough to take him away from the joy and experience of seeing a Michael Bay movie on the Big Screen. He knew it was a movie filled with Bayhem and no much else, and it delivered.

The Batman - CB - S5EP02

The Batman - CB - S5EP02

DC and Warner Bros. has made yet another version of Batman. This time starring Robert Pattinson as the titular Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as the “not yet Commissioner” James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, The unrecognizable Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as The Riddler.
Compared to other Bat Outings, the amount of time Pattinson spent inside the suit is surprising. Director Matt Reeves made it seem like Bruce Wayne was the mask to cover his true identity.
Every direction and take they went with these characters felt right, sometimes even better than previous successful iterations of them. It was nice to see another of Batman’s rogues get a chance to shine in the spotlight despite being depicted by Jim Carrey once before on the big screen. The Riddler fit well with the tone and the style of the film. The riddles were complex, and really threw the characters, and the audience, for a loop… in a good way.
Finally, this film better win an academy award for best make up. Colin Farrell’s transformation into the Penguin is phenomenal. He gets completely lost in the prosthetics, and in no way does it look like a guy wearing a fat suit with prosthetics.
This movie is so good, the 3 hour run time couldn’t prevent the Brothers Brotastic from giving this movie 2 tickets. Thrilled to have seen this movie in theaters, and would gladly have bought another ticket to see it again.

Scream 2022 -CB - S5EP01

Have you ever heard of a Requel? This was a new concept to the Brothers Brotastic. Well this latest addition to the Scream Franchise will tell you all about it. Oh, and it has plenty of good slasher fun too.

It's hard not to say "What's your favorite scary movie?" when you sit down to watch any of the entries into the Scream franchise. Many were skeptical without the backing of Wes Craven due to his passing, but this film aims to keep the spirit alive.

Get some popcorn, settle in for the night, and hear what the Brothers Brotastic have to say about Scream 2022. Just don't answer the phone.

2021 Year End Movie Jamboree Part 2!

The Brothers Brotastic stray from the Marvel machine a bit and venture out into other mostly non comic book movies for this episode. We cover the likes of Dune, Mortal Kombat, The Suicide Squad, Snake Eyes, and The Matrix Resurrections.

With as much as we discuss these movies and how we viewed them on HBOmax, you would think they are a sponsor of this episode... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! No, we just are humble patrons of a streaming service that we enjoy.

What did you think of these movies?

Black Widow - CB - S4EP08

BLACK WIDOW

DIRECTED BY CATE SHORTLAND

STARRING:

SCARLETT JOHANSON

FLORENCE PUGH

DAVID HARBOR

RACHEL WEISZ

THE MOVIE PICKS UP RIGHT WHERE Captain America CIVIL WAR LEFT OFF. BLACK WIDOW FACES HER PAST AS AN ASSASSIN FOR RUSSIA, SPECIFICALLY A HIT INVOLVING DRACOV… WHERE HIS DAUGHTER WAS COLLATERAL DAMAGE. DRACOV WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BLACK WIDOW PROGRAM WHERE GIRLS ARE KIDNAPPED AT A YOUNG AGE AND RAISED TO KILL. SHE THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD, BUT DUH DUH DUH… HE’S NOT AND IS STILL MAKING BLACK WIDOWS.

THE REAL MVP OF THIS FILM IS FLORENCE PUGH. SHE PLAYS YET ANOTHER GIRL FROM THE BLACK WIDOW PROGRAM THAT HAS BROKEN FREE OF DRACOV’S SPELL THAT FORCES HER TO BE AN ASSASSIN. HER PLIGHT AND RAW EMOTION REALLY COME OFF THE SCREEN.

THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN FLORENCE AND SCARLETT FELT VERY REAL, AND THE TALKING MOMENTS OF THIS FILM REALLY STAND OUT POSSIBLY MORE SO THAN THE ACTION SEQUENCES.

CLEARLY THIS MOVIE IS PASSING THE BATON FROM SCARLET TO FLORENCE, CONSIDERING THE END OF THIS MOVIE LEADS STRAIGHT TO INFINITY WAR AND ENDGAME WHERE SHE DIES.

TASKMASTER’S INTRODUCTION/OPENING FIGHT WAS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE TASKMASTER

FELT THIS MOVIE WAS TOO LATE

CHECKS ALL THE BOXES OF A MARVEL MOVIE… AND THAT MAY NOT BE ENOUGH.

DOMESTICALLY GROSSED AROUND 80 MILLION OPENING WEEKEND

AROUND 60 MILLION FROM DISNEY PLUS

IT SET A BOX OFFICE RECORD AT THE TIME

SALES DROPPED DRAMATICALLY THE NEXT WEEKEND

SCARLETT JOHANSON SUED DISNEY ALLEGING A BREACH OF CONTRACT BY DOING THE SAME DAY AND DATE DUAL RELEASE STRATEGY, THUS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTING HER COMPENSATION.

DISNEY RESPONDED BY PUBLISHING HER EARNINGS FROM THE FILM AT THE TIME WERE 20 MILLION. (I THINK IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE US MERE NONMILLIONAIRS LESS SYMPATHETIC TO HER CASE)

BOTH DISNEY AND SCARLETT JOHANSON HAVE SETTLED THE DISPUTE, AND IT SEEMS THAT SHE HAS SAID THAT SHE IS WILLING AND LOOKS FORWARD TO WORKING WITH DISNEY AGAIN.

GAL GADOT’S CONTRACT WAS RENEGOTIATED BEFORE WARNER BROS DID THE SAME THING WITH WONDER WOMAN 1984, IT HAS YET TO BE REVEALED IF ANY LAWSUITS OR SETTLEMENTS WILL HAPPENED WITH EMMA STONE OVER CRUELLA’S SIMILAR RELEASE STRATEGY NOR EMILY BLUNT OVER THE JUNGLE CRUISE’S DAY AND DATE RELEASE

F9: The Fast Saga - S4EP07

F9: The Fast Saga - S4EP07

F9 aka F9: The Fast Saga F9/F9: The Fast Saga directed by Justin Lin originally set for release on 4/19/2019, but moved due to Hobbs & Shaw and then again to avoid No Time To Die, and last by Covid. Finally released 5/19/2021 This movie is about FAMILY. The movies continues the story of the previous 8 movies and follows a group of street racers who became outlaws, then turned government agents. This chapter introduces the long lost brother of main character Dominic Torreto. This entry continues a lot of story set up in the previous film and brings back Charlize Theron’s Cypher who is a master criminal, hacker, Cyber Terrorist. In the beginning it is revealed that she is under the control of Jakob, who we learn in early flashbacks is the disgraced brother of Dominic Torreto. He is after a device that will allow the user to hack any computer, but is only unlocked with a specific key that turns out to be the daughter of the device creators DNA. For me the Fast and Furious franchise is pure movie fun and a guilty pleasure. I come into each film knowing they are over the top and ridiculous. Each new film has to top the previous films big stunt and you always know you are in for some great car chase scenes. I like that they brought back Han although I am not sure I understood the way the film explained his survival from Tokyo Drift. I loved the over the top stunts Car driving off cliff and grappling hooks to falling Rope Bridge, The world’s biggest, longest and heaviest semi-truck flipping straight up end over end, driving through a mine field. Tyrese Gibson’s character of Roman pearce is the main comic relief character and he nails this on the head. I really loved that they used him to point out what we the audience have all thought….how are we still alive, we are invincible, superheroes….. Will this win Oscars? No. Is it a damn good time in theaters? “F” Yeah!

Justice League vs Zack Snyder's Justice League - CB - S4EP06

Justice League vs Zack Snyder's Justice League - CB - S4EP06

Watching the Theatrical Cut, before the Snyder Cut movement even began (with the exception of the bad mustache CGI removal for Henry Cavill), it wasn’t exactly clear what was missing from the movie. If mustachegate had not happened, the fuel for the Snyder Cut fire may not have even sparked up.

It only becomes clear where the differences lie after going back to the Theatrical Cut post Snyder Cut viewing.
A lot of scenes are similar, but play out much better with the nuances that Zack Snyder put into his Justice League. The Theatrical Cut has a lot of levity to it, but Snyder’s darker muted tones work much better with the bleaker story he told.

It becomes funny how painfully obvious the changes Joss Whedon made are sprinkled throughout the Theatrical Cut; lines dubbed while actors face away from the camera or are off screen, as well as lots of green screen shots to fill in spots where actors needed to be seen.

The Theatrical Cut is not without it’s merits though. One of The Flash’s best lines is missing from the Snyder Cut; “I’ve never done battle. I’ve just pushed some people and run away.” And contemplating the feat undertaken to take The Snyder Cut and rework an entirely different movie with some reshoots and audio dubbing is impressive. The Theatrical Cut is rather entertaining, and like we mentioned before, without the bad mustache removal to be a thorn in the fans’ side to remind everyone of what could’ve been, the idea of an alternate version may not have resonated so loudly.

At some point though the Snyder Cut clearly goes in a different direction. Whole story lines with characters not in the theatrical cut shine; most notably with Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. Snyder said Cyborg was the heart of the movie, and he was right. The most frustrating thing about it now is the unfortunately due to a very public spat between Fisher and many executives at Warner Bros. means that Cyborg, in particular Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, is done. He was supposed to be in The Flash, but that now is not happening.

In movies you’re supposed to show and not tell. But in a movie just over 4 hours… a little tell goes a long way. The inclusion of Ray Porter’s Darkseid just felt right, even though he is more bark than bite. Chalk it up to the Snyder Cut hype, but Darkseid’s presence was exciting to see, and added more weight to the story.

Watching the Theatrical Cut now leaves you wondering, “why did they change that?” It is clear in the opinion of the Brothers Brotastic that the Snyder Cut is far superior. While the Snyderverse appears to have ended with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Cinematic Brotastic knows how impossible it was for this movie to get made, and is truly happy that The Infamous Snyder Cut, has seen the light of day.

A Quiet Place Part II - S4EP05

A Quiet Place Part II - S4EP05

Before the rise of the Delta Variant, we had the chance to see a few movies in theaters, A Quiet Place part 2, F9, Black Widow, The Suicide Squad, and Candyman to name a few. We hope to have episodes on all of those out soon.

A Quiet Place Part 2, directed by John Krasinski, as well as starring him briefly along with Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, and Millicent Simmonds

A Quiet Place II, John Krasinski, World Premiere was 3/8/2020, covid delayed release theatrically to 5/28/2021

This is a continuation of the first film with a few more hints at more of the overall backstory about what led to the post-apocalyptic world the movie takes place in. A worthwhile sequel, but some aspects I feel could have used a little more attention.

The opening sequence depicting the arrival was done very well. I have always been a fan of the slow transition from normal to invasion, for lack of a better term. You know a secret that the characters don’t but there’s nothing you can do but watch and wait. War of the Worlds, both the original and Spielberg’s remake, and M. Night’s “Signs” are perfect examples of this as well. It sets up great tension in otherwise mundane and routine tasks, as seen in this film, going to the store and watching a little league baseball game. The fireball in the sky was ominous, but not over the top and I liked how people didn’t “freak out” but more hastily moved on with a hint of urgency instead of all out chaos.

This did a good job of filling in some missing details the audience wanted after watching the first film. It also very naturally and subtly added a moment that would payoff later between Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy later in the film using the ASL gesture for “Dive.”

The reintroduction of Cillian Murphy’s character and the violent group at the marina did a great job of building out the world we got a glimpse of in the first film. Most of the encounters are with people who have lost hope and are just trying to survive, by any means necessary, even if it is at the expense of someone else.

The sequences with the creatures were more frightening and visceral that we’ve seen and had a lot of good jump scares to go along with that.

At the beginning, it seemed at times that John Krasinki's character was more aware of the creatures' sensitivity to sound that he should have been during the first wave of the attack.

The son character seemed out of place as if the filmmakers were not sure what to do with his character. Also, what was up with the jump scare revealing that Cillian Murphy's character kept his wife's body at the compound? It was a beat that was not explained, nor did it go anywhere.

The film's abrupt end is in line with the first film, but one half of the Brothers Brotastic felt there should be a little more breathing room.

Clearly seeing the first film is a prerequisite, but it may have helped to recap some things at the beginning. I did not have a chance to rewatch the first film, so any themes or carryovers from Part 1 may not be immediately obvious, and connections may be missed.

Overall, this was a worthwhile sequel. It was nuanced while maintaining the same look and feel as the original film. It did not stray too far from what people loved about its predecessor and breathed in some new life that looks to take this film into a much anticipated Part 3.

I overall felt my experience seeing this film physically was a little lackluster, and I’m not sure if that is because of the movie, or if it was being back in the theater for the first time in months and maybe being kind of scared, but I’m glad I saw this in theaters, and would be willing to watch this again. 2 tickets.

Joker - CB - S2EP16

Joker - CB - S2EP16

Warner Bros. and DC Comics step outside the box and made a solo film outside their already established shared cinematic universe. And it focused on a villain instead of a hero. Joker shows the origin of Batman’s most famous adversary. Following 2 already impeccable film performances of the character, how does Joaquin Phoenix hold up? Listen to Cinematic Brotastic to find out.
One thing was very clear in this movie, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was the driving force behind the whole film. He gave a very real portrayal of someone afflicted with possible mental health issues that unfortunately resulted in a life of murder. One of the defying character flaws in Arther Fleck, played by Phoenix, is his mixed emotions in the literal sense. Fear, sadness, and nervousness or embarrassment, are expressed through laughter, which ultimately alienates Arther from everyone else. This is where Phoenix’s performance really shines. His ability to convey contradicting emotions such as sadness and fear through laughter is something that we Brothers Brotastic are truly amazed by. We may not have the acting chops of the greats, but we have acting experience, and the thought of trying to achieve what Phoenix was able to achieve seems impossible. Phoenix has set the bar high for awards season.
The basic plot of the film at times felt predictable, but that wasn’t necessarily a problem. Once again, it was Phoenix’s performance that had you guessing. What was he going to do in this scene? That scene? It was the individual scenes that were unpredictable, so even though you knew the film was building to a big moment, how it got there was what was truly enjoyable. This being a stand alone film meant that it had no other films to build to, which allowed it a lot of breathing room. That knowledge also helped in knowing that this movie could go in any direction, and that was refreshing.
This film’s depiction of Gotham City was one of the better iterations of its predecessors, TV universes included. It made the city the horrible place that Batman needs to save it from, but not so horrible that any sane person would just leave the city. It made sense why people were still living there.
This film would easily work without any association to DC Comics, but the connection is just icing on top of the cake.
Andrew gives this film 1.5 tickets; It’s good and well worth a viewing, but can be depressing.
Philip gives this film 2 tickets; This film warrants a 2nd viewing to see it again through a new lens.
Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.
And Don’t forget to check you ticket stubs.

Dark Phoenix - CB - S2EP15

Dark Phoenix - CB - S2EP15

Did the end of this franchise soar like the phoenix in its title, or did it burn to ashes to be born again under new management? Hot off the heals of Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, Dark Phoenix found itself in an awkward place. Is the film’s poor reception the fault of the content, or an unfortunate side effect of the looming curiosity of what the X-Men will be like in the MCU? We explore those questions and more in our latest episode of Cinematic Brotastic.

We Brothers Brotastic found ourselves disappointed, not in the film per se, but rather it the film’s reception. We find ourselves, whether it be purely nostalgic or perhaps something more, drawn more to the X-Men over any other Marvel property. We loved the ’90’s cartoon and collected trading cards. To see something that we admire a lot be the source of so much negative criticism and hatred cut us deep.

This film is not the best X-Men film in the franchise, but it is definitely a much better adaptation of the “Dark Phoenix Saga” than X3. In the episode we go into more detail about nitpicky things that we disliked about the film, including the misuse of Quicksilver, the flat portrayal of Jessica Chastain’s villain, and Jennifer Lawrence’s franchise fatigue and her character’s spoiled death.

But this film had a lot of things that went well. It introduced a mutant island, a feature in the comics and cartoon. Interestingly enough, it let characters unleash with their powers. The other films in the franchise have their set pieces and some action sequences, but most characters only use their powers once. We really get to see the X-Men like we want to see them; using their powers.

Another issue this film had, wasn’t really its fault. The plot had a lot of similarities to MCU's Captain Marvel. An all powerful woman fighting shape shifting aliens in space. Because of this, some plot points were changed, including the final act going from the vastness of space down into the confined setting of a train. We both thought the sequence was fantastic and exciting. We do wonder what could have been, similarities aside.

We both hoped the franchise could have gone out with a bang, but instead it went out with a fizzle. Who knows if we will ever see “New Mutants,” another film in the franchise that was supposed to come out after, but seems stuck in development hell.

Andrew gave Dark Phoenix 1 ticket. He’s glad he saw it in theaters and thought it was exciting, but it is not the best of the franchise.

Philip gives Dark Phoenix 2 tickets. Cyclops is his favorite character on the team and he likes all the characters more than the rest of Marvel’s lineup. He is sad that this movie did not do well.

Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.

Spider-Man: Far From Home - CB - S2EP14

Spider-Man: Far From Home - CB - S2EP14

There's no such thing as a vacation for superheroes. Case in point, Spider-Man: Far From Home! After going to space, being wiped from existence, and literally saving the world, ol' web head wanted to take a break. Unfortunately trouble followed him to Europe. How does the 23rd film in the MCU hold up? How many tickets did it earn from the Brothers Brotastic? Tune in to find out.

Spider-Man: Far From Home continues where Avengers: Endgame left off; Tony Stark is dead, and the world has been saved. People are trying to adjust to the reintegration of those dusted in the "Snap" from Infinity War now that they have all "Blipped" back into existence 5 years later having not aged with the rest of the world. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is trying to find his place in all this now that his mentor is dead, often feeling alone. He finds out that Stark left him with all the assets that Iron Man left behind, which in the wrong hands could really do some damage. Overwhelmed, he seeks to take a break for a school trip and finally work up the courage to ask MJ (Zendaya) out. Trouble, however, is always brewing. A Mysterious hero comes out of nowhere when "Elemental" creatures seem to appear from the same place; creatures made of water, earth, and fire. This new hero teams up with Spider-Man claiming he's from a different dimension trying to keep these creatures from destroying this one. Unbeknownst to the audience and Spider-Man, the multidimensional story is but a ruse to con Peter Parker into handing over his gift from Tony Stark. The mysterious new hero Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), is a disgruntled ex employee of Tony Stark's, and seeks to get revenge, along a few dozen other ex-employees who feel the same. Using technology that Tony stark dismissed as not useful, they were going to fool the world. Needless to say, the plot is eventually foiled by Spider-Man, but not before Beck, named Mysterio by news organizations, reveals Spider-Man's true identity as Peter Parker to the entire world.

One of the aspects of Spider-Man that make him a beloved hero is his constant fight with himself; meaning his struggle to live both as Peter Parker and Spider-Man separately. He longs for the simple joys of having friends and romantic relationships, but feels an immense duty to help others since he is gifted in a way to do so, but he can't do both at the same time no mater how hard he tries. This film did an amazing, no pun intended, job of showing that struggle with his own duality. He's in Europe, about to sit next to the girl he likes, and she's showing interest in him as well, when all of a sudden, disaster strikes and Spider-Man must save the day. the weight of this fight was felt coming off of the screen.

Mysterio is a known Spider-Man villain, and yet with the marketing and the way the film opened, it seemed like Mysterio was actually one of the good guys. Marvel has changed some of their characters to better suit the films, so it is possible. But just like Mysterio deceives everyone, Marvel deceived us. While the reveal that Mysterio was in fact a bad guy wasn't exactly jaw dropping, it was a bit of a surprise.

A big surprise however, was the reveal that J.K. Simmons reprised his role as J. Jonah Jameson, head of the Daily Bugle; a publication that hates Spider-Man and does everything it can to tear down the web slinger.

An even bigger surprise was the reveal that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) were in fact shape shifting Skrulls this whole time! The real Fury was in space. How long has this been going on? Skrulls showed up in the 90's, well before Iron Man 1.

This movie earned 2 tickets all around. It was fun to see, and both of us brothers would gladly watch it again.

Until next time, we'll see you at the movies.

And don't forget to check your ticket stubs.

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum in MX4D!! CB - S2EP13

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum in MX4D!! CB - S2EP13

The assassin underground world gets ever so bigger with the latest installment of the John Wick franchise. More secret societies, more secret governments, less people NOT in the underground. Parabellum translates to “prepare for war.” Our butts and backs were not ready for the war of our seats in B&B theaters’ MX4D. How did the high octane action play out as we literally were in high octane action ourselves? Listen in to find out.

First and foremost, B&B Theaters is not endorsing or sponsoring this post. We talk about an aspect of their theaters, because its in one of their theaters that we saw John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.

Because of a technical issue when seeing Shazam! we were given free passes to another film. We chose to use them to see John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. Only, it wasn’t just a regular ticket; this was for John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum in MX4D!!!!!

What is MX4D? In a nutshell, its motion seats and atmospheric effects used to enhance the movie viewing experience. The seats move in all directions, the backs punch you, and water sprays in your face. At times you can feel the wind in your hair when there is a car chase. And at other times you can smell what’s happening on screen. And with such a gun heavy movie as John Wick, a strobe flash for virtually every gun shot. Is this worth it? Maybe, maybe not. Let us tell you about the movie first.

All in all, there’s not much to say about the third chapter of John Wick. If you’ve seen 1 and 2, you know what you're getting into. John having to fight his way to survival in endless close quarters hand to hand, gun to gun combat. It’s the choreography that is the spectacle here.

Keanu Reeves doesn’t say much in this movie at all; at times he even quotes himself from The Matrix.

Halle Berry and her character’s attack dogs added a nice change of pace for the action. Mark Dacascos’s Zero made for a formidable antagonist that at times made the audience think perhaps John Wick has met his match. Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne shine as they reprise their roles in the franchise. The most surprising and rewarding was Lance Reddick’s concierge character Charon. In past installments he’s been much like a concierge, there to answer questions and serve the needs of customers not getting involved in any sort of action. Here he arms himself not so much to defend John Wick, but to defend the hotel he loyally serves in.

Is MX4D worth it? Depends. John Wick is not a movie that requires a lot of attention to follow the plot. It’s not like trying to follow the plot of Memento where every frame is littered with subtext and clues to the truth of the narrative. John Wick is a shoot ‘em up film with lots of cool action… and that’s about it. When being jostled around by motion controlled hydraulic seats, you don’t want to worry about subtle plot details. The seats were harder than traditional seats and for the case of some of our butts, they started to go numb toward the end. With that aside, both the Brothers Brotastic couldn’t stop laughing at how ridiculous the insane motion could be sometimes. Andrew personally thought the MX4D made John Wick 3 much more enjoyable than if he had seen it in a standard theater.

Andrew gives JW3 1 ticket, he’s glad he saw it once.

Philip gave JW3 2 tickets. He thoroughly enjoys the franchise, and can’t wait to see where chapter 4 takes him.

Until next time, we’ll see you a the movies.

And don’t forget to check your ticket stubs.

CB - S2EP12 - Shazam!

CB - S2EP12 - Shazam!

SHAZAM!! Say my name so my powers may flow through you! The DCEU introduces one of their lesser known heroes. A boy who says the magic word and "POOF" he's super! A bit of a silly premise, but the trailers looked fun. Did it work? Can Shazam! rise above the troubled past of the DC comics Extended Universe? Just say the word and listen as Philip and Andrew return with a look at DC's Shazam!

Two movies about Captain Marvel came out in 2019, but only one took on that name. The DCEU had to go with Shazam! At the time of Shazam’s origin in the comics, he was known as Captain Marvel. The abridged version of history is that Captain Marvel was taken out of the roster, and eventually bought by DC comics and shelved as a character due to similarities to Superman. Meanwhile, Marvel comics came out with a character named Captain Marvel and claimed the rights to the name. DC decided to eventually bring the character back onto the pages of their comics, and instead called him Shazam, after the so called password the character has to shout to turn into the super hero.

After the debacle that followed Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, and The Justice League (bad reviews and lots of behind the scenes scrambling along with a real life tragedy) Warner Brothers and DC comics wanted to shift focus. They had a huge hit with Aquaman, but they also had a huge hit with Wonder Woman in between poorly received films. So now Shazam! enters into the equation. A story about a teenage boy named Billy Batson, who is imbued with the abilities of a powerful wizard named Shazam, merely by saying his name. With Aquaman, they could rely on the mysterious subaqueous world with which he comes from, creating quite the spectacle, and relying on the rugged charm of Jason Momoa. With Shazam!, they relied on the comedic aspect of a teenager being thrust into an older body, and having to deal with super powers on top of that.

For Shazam!, this worked. Zachary Levi is totally believable as someone who is supposed to be a teenager. He gives the film the right amount of humor without getting too silly, and can be serious when it’s called for. This film is often compared to Big starring Tom Hanks, and the comparison is not far off.

Aquaman made specific mentions to the Justice League cementing it’s connection to the DCEU, and Shazam! Is no different. News articles featuring Superman and Batman can be seen. One of Billy Batson’s foster brothers has a bat-erang in the same design that is featured in Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The most clear connection is with the cameo, if you can call it that, featuring the chest of Superman in the same suit Henry Cavill has worn since he donned the cape. Warner Brothers is clearly connecting the films. This normally wouldn’t be a problem, however, Ben Affleck is out as Batman, and Henry Cavill has neither confirmed nor denied if he is still playing Superman. With 2 key members of the Justice League moving forward with sequels, it's hard to imagine the connected nature of the stories when their two biggest players are MIA. With a new Batman film in the works with Robert Pattinson and a solo Joker film starring Juaquin Phoenix having no ties to the DCEU, it’s hard to get behind the already established shared universe when it's appears to be falling apart. And for the record, with all its failings, the Brothers Brotastic were very much fans of the “DC Snyder-verse” as some have called it. We, like so many others, call for the release of the Snyder Cut of Justice League.

Behind the scenes trouble aside, both of the Brothers Brotastic can get behind Shazam! On a scale of zero to two tickets, we both give this film two tickets way ripped! It is fun and a great introduction to a character not well known from the DC gallery of heroes. We both would love to revisit this film and will most definitely be adding it to our home video collection.

CB - S2EP11 - UltraViolet Shutdown

CB - S2EP11 - UltraViolet Shutdown

One of the first cloud-based digital lockers for movies and TV shows is shutting down. How soon will this happen and what will become of your movies if you used the service? What lead to the shutdown and how easy is it to save your collection? The Brothers Brotastic dive right in to the digital content shutdown of UltraViolet.

UltraViolet is shutting down at the end of July. They announced the shutdown at the beginning of the year. Since then many have been clamoring to make sure they don’t lose their digital movies that they have saved over the years. So what must be done to save your collection from disappearing at the end of the summer? It seemingly is a simple fix, but if you’re not computer savvy, it could be a daunting task. You can click the following link to follow step by step instructions on how to save your library.

https://www.howtogeek.com/fyi/ultraviolet-is-shutting-down-on-july-31st-heres-how-to-transfer-your-movies/

We will also post this article to our Facebook Page as well.

There are many places to store digital copies of movies and tv shows, but the ones that we like and find easy to use are Vudu, and Movies Anywhere. In a nutshell, you link your UltraViolet account to Vudu, then link it to Movies Anywhere; simple, but can be difficult or confusing for less computer friendly people.

Personally the early days of digital content storage were confusing. We feel that this may have contributed to the downfall of UltraViolet. The ease of use of Movies Anywhere leaves UltraViolet in the dust. UltraViolet has a website, myuv.com, but this is not where you watch your movies. Instead, you have to link the account to another service such as Vudu or Movies Anywhere, or for a brief time Apps like Flixster. UltraViolet was just a storage location, and to be able to watch your movies, you often had to sign up for other services; sometimes even having to set up an account for each individual production company, I.e Sony, Lionsgate, Paramount, Disney etc… This made it confusing to keep up with growing digital libraries. With services like Movies Anywhere, all of your library is in one convenient location. And you can use the app or web site to watch those movies as well. You don’t have to set up multiple accounts. In fact, if you have multiple digital content libraries already, Movies Anywhere is a place where you can bring them all together, including iTunes. Now, we keep talking about Movie’s Anywhere, but only because it's a preferred choice, and not because they are sponsoring this podcast. It has made the navigation of the digital content catalog easy and efficient for us.

Now there are some production companies that do not support Movies Anywhere; Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM for example. To have movies by those companies will require additional digital content lockers. Vudu is another big one. It can also be linked to Movies Anywhere. The nice thing about linking these accounts, is that with a lot of movies, the link goes both ways. iTunes movies will show up in Movies Anywhere, and Movies Anywhere titles can show up in iTunes.

There is still multiple accounts and services that sometimes feels convoluted and confusing, but it's getting better. We almost wonder if when UltraViolet shuts down, that perhaps some of those production companies that don’t support Movies Anywhere, will back the service since their ties to UltraViolet are severed. If this is the case, Movies Anywhere would be the closes thing to a one stop shop for purchased digital content.

Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.

And don’t forget your ticket stubs.

CB - S2EP10 - Avenger: Endgame Part Two

CB - S2EP10 - Avenger: Endgame Part Two

A movie so big it needed two podcasts!! With a 3 hour run time and 10 years of build up, we couldn't contain it all in one episode. We talk chills, thrills, spills, and hills. We discuss the emotional rollercoaster that is Endgame; from the most exciting moments to the most surprising deaths. Listen now to the conclusion of Cinematic Brotastic's two part podcast on Avengers: Endgame!
When the preceding movie’s cliffhanger involves 1/2 of the entire universe getting wiped out, you can pretty much expect the conclusion to be an emotional ride. Avengers: Endgame is just that, an emotional ride. From Ant-Man’s reunion with his daughter now 5 years older, even though the 5 years was just 5 hours to him, puts a little lump in your throat. Hawkeye and Black Widow fighting for the chance to sacrifice themself to get the soul stone pulled at the heart strings. But one of the most emotional moments was also unexpected. In the climactic battle, Hulk had used the stones to reverse the snap, however, the results are not immediately seen. Captain America looks like he’s about to meet his end, when a voice of a team member thought long gone warns Captain America he’s going to pass him, “ on [his} left.” More characters than we could count join the core Avengers on the battlefield, walking through portals created by Dr. Strange and other magical characters. What should have been a moment to jump to our feet with excitement, was filled with emotion. We were for sure excited, but inexplicably compelled to cry and felt a swell of emotion that made it difficult to keep our composure.
The overwhelming emotional experience was quickly replace by repeated awesome moments that had us practically jumping out of our seats with excitement. Ant-man as his larger self straight up punches one of those flying worm ships from the first Avengers film knocking it out of the sky. A moment we thought would never be touched upon in the films was when Captain America becomes worthy of Thor’s hammer. He not only wields it, he uses its full power. He throws it and it returns. He throws it at his shield creating a concussive blast knocking Thanos off balance. He even calls the lightning! Probably one of the coolest moments was when all the women of marvel teamed up to protect the new gauntlet from Thanos. Essentially playing keep away, the heroes are getting bogged down by Thanos’ minions. Finally Captain Marvel gets it and as she rises to the occasion, so do all of the female heroes in the franchise. This made for an exciting moment, and was a good testament to the fact that this is not just a man’s game.
10 years of buildup, a lot of hype, and yet it still met expectations. The 3 hour run time allowed for the film to include a lot of story. A big trend in Hollywood is to split a long movie into two films. This one kept everything in one, and although this is appreciated, we feel this is also its biggest set back. With travel time and trailers, when all is said and done, the whole experience took 4 or more hours. It’s not easy to just say, “I’m going to go watch Endgame!” If you go at 9 or 10 o’clock at night, you won’t come home until 1 or 2 in the morning. It takes a big chunk of one’s day. Both of us would love to see this film in theaters again, but probably won’t, due to its 3 hour run time alone.
The Brothers Brotastic rate Avengers: Endgame 2 tickets. Worth the money, and worth another screening, if it’s possible.
Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.
And don’t forget to check your ticket stubs.

CB - S2EP09 - Avengers: Endgame Part 1

CB - S2EP09 - Avengers: Endgame Part 1

The summer started off with one of the biggest movie openings of all time!!! Avengers: Endgame! A culmination of over ten years and over 20 movies to tell one massive story arc. Did Marvel pull it off? Were they able to live up to the hype after the snap heard round the MCU? A movie this big requires more than one episode. Sit back and enjoy part one of Cinematic Brotastic's Avengers: Endgame Podcast. The Spoiler Ban has been lifted!!!! Spoilers ahead!!
Avengers: Endgame sets the stage for the emotional ride you are about to embark on right out of the gate. The film opens on Hawkeye and his family enjoying a picnic. You just know it’s before the Snap that wiped out half of all life in the universe… and you know what is about to happen. You see the train coming, you’re stuck on the tracks, and there is nothing you can do.
In the end tag of Captain Marvel, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers shows up asking, “Where’s Fury?” This does afford the opportunity for the characters to have already met and introduced themselves, however, Andrew was in the mindset that the end tag was a scene from within Endgame and not a stand alone element. This made the start of the film a little confusing.
It was no surprise that a franchise that contains an infinity stone that controls time, that time would be played with eventually. What was surprising is that Endgame changed some of the rules of time travel. The general understanding of time travel is that if you change the past, you alter the future. Back to the Future’s entire plot line depends on this understanding. Marty McFly’s parents don’t kiss at the formal dance, that would eventually lead to marriage and having kids, therefore Marty will erase from existence unless he fixes history. The Terminator relies on the same concept; kill Sara or John Connor when they’re young to prevent the greatest leader against the machine uprising. Rather Endgame points out that although the heroes are traveling to the past, it is still their specific future. Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and the rest of the Avengers are still moving forward in time from their perspective, even though their destination is in the past. Because of this, changing the past won’s fix the future. The Avengers have to get the stones and Alter reality itself to fix what Thanos has done. In the film, this all makes perfect sense, however thinking about this new approach to time travel story telling, leaves a lot of possible paradoxes that mess with the stories continuity. It will require multiple viewings possibly to get a better understanding of the rules of time travel as the Russo Brothers and the screen writers have interpreted.
An unexpected thread that gets explored in Endgame is the use of a younger villain. Thanos was revealed to be looming in the background of all the MCU movies to date. We don’t get to see him, with a few exceptions, until Guardians Volume 1. Even then, however, his character is not really explored until Infinity War. In infinity war his plan is crazy, but there is a logic to it. He, in his mind, is doing what is needed for the universe to thrive. We see this in Endgame; Stark has a kid, the water is cleaner. For Endgame though, the Thanos we are introduced to is one who has yet to retrieve the infinity stones. By the end, Thanos’ mission for the stones is personal. He plans to reimagine the universe altogether. Doing so would leave no-one behind to long for what was; a more sinister plan than before. The Thanos from infinity war is compassionate in a way, but the Thanos from Endgame is much more sinister.
With an impressive 3 hour and 2 minute runtime, it is impossible to include everything in one podcast. Check back in next week for part 2!
Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.
And don’t forget to check your ticket stubs.

CB - S2EP08 - Us

CB - S2EP08 - Us

The concept of a Doppelgänger is quite frightening. Imagine seeing your likeness embodied by another person? Jordan Peele follows his smash hit “Get Out” with “Us”; a completely original film, something cinemas seem to lack lately. This film is not what you expect it to be… and is that good? Listen in to see what Philip and Andrew thought about Jordan Peele’s “Us.”

This movie is not exactly what you expect it to be. The trailer for the film makes it seem like the family is the central focus of this attack by exact copies of the main characters. This film goes beyond that. It is refreshing to see a marketing campaign that kept the secret of this film. There aren’t necessarily jaw dropping twists and turns that are unexpected, but rather, the story goes a different direction than you’re led on to believe. Both Brothers Brotastic feel that the omission of these details made for a richer experience, improving the enjoyment of the film.

It becomes evident within the first scene that there’s something more to this film than just what’s shown. A simple scene plays out; two parents at odds but trying to keep appearances in front of their child. It doesn’t take long to realize that something else is happening, however, it is not clear. It is at this point that it becomes apparent that “Us” is a layered film. Because of these layers, “Us” is probably a film that will warrant repeat viewings just to understand everything that is going on. This however does not distract from the film. Even though some things are still in question when the credits roll, the film is still enjoyable from beginning to end.

Andrew went into this movie expecting another “Get Out.” This film is not “Get Out.” Goin into this film with that sort of expectation will do you a great disservice. Andrew kept trying to compare it to “Get Out,” but the films are nothing alike. Once he stopped comparing the two, he was able to completely enjoy the film. Philip did not have any expectations. Upon viewing “Us,” Jordan Peele is quickly becoming a favorite director.

Jordan Peele’s comedic background came in handy. This film, although frightening and scary at times, was filled with humor. The comedy felt natural and well deserved. Even in some of the most intense moments, humor found its way in. This is not to say that the movie is a laughing riot, however, it will make you laugh from time to time.

Both Philip and Andrew give this film 2 tickets. Because of the layers this film seems to exhibit, repeat viewings seem almost mandatory… but that doesn’t seem to be a bad thing.

Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.

And don’t forget to check your ticket stubs.

CB - S2EP07 - Pet Sematary

CB - S2EP07 - Pet Sematary

We definitely don’t want to be buried in a Pet Sematary. Hot off the heals of Stephen King’s “IT,” Pet Sematary brings a classic horror tale to a new generation. Does it rise from the grave to bring us something skewed? Or should the film have listened to its own tag line and stayed dead? Listen in as the Brothers Brotastic mark a first in this podcast’s history.

The mother of the Brothers Brotastic is a huge Stephen King fan, possibly reading and watching everything with his name attached to it. Because of this, we grew up with a strong Stephen King influence. “IT,” Tommyknockers, Langoliers, The Stand, The Shining, Creep Show… we saw it all, and read some. So when this remake came out, there was only one person we had to see it with, our mother.

Upon viewing, we couldn’t help but keep making comparisons to the original film made in 1989. If not comparing to the original, we were comparing to other horror films that have come out recently, like The Conjuring, or Annabelle. Unfortunately this film didn’t do anything new or different enough to stand out from others in its genre, nor the shadow of its predecessor.

Occasionally, there were some jump scares that would make anyone’s adrenaline spike momentarily, but jump scares don’t make a horror film good. This film could be compared to a popular Mexican condiment; salsa. There are many kinds, and levels of spiciness. A really good salsa would have good flavor and some kick, but what is more marketable and consumed on a larger scale is a milder version; all the ingredients are there… but there’s no kick. Pet Seminary is not the only film guilty of this, many of the trailers that showed before the film looked as flat and clichéd as this one was. Many of the films that have been spun off in The Conjuring Universe are guilty of this as well with the exception of its very foundation, The Conjuring.

One aspect that neither Philip nor Andrew seem to remember from the original film involves flashbacks of Rachel, one of the main characters. Rachel’s sister suffered from some disease that deformed her body. Because of this illness, she was completely dependent upon others to eat, sleep, bathe, and so on. Rachel, being very young, didn’t quite understand the disease and due to often being left alone to be her caretaker, feared her sister. These sequences essentially vilified a person with a deformity. We couldn’t help but be reminded of how the British Film Institute has made an effort to no longer fund films that villainize characters with scars or deformities. How many people out there have a bone disease that makes the body grow in a painful way? How would they feel if their disease was the only reason a character was evil?

For the first time in this podcast’s history, Andrew rated this movie 0 tickets. He enjoyed seeing the film with his mother and brother… both fans of Stephen King. However, he could have gone through life without seeing this version of Pet Sematary.

Philip rated the film 1 ticket. He is glad to have seen the film. He has no intentions to see it again… and he’s fine with that. He does not, however, think this film deserves a 0 ticket rating lumping it in with a mutually despised film by both brothers… Zoolander.

CB - S2EP06 - Captain Marvel

CB - S2EP06 - Captain Marvel

The Marvel machine is not slowing down any time soon. Another highly anticipated entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe puts women first for a change. Does squeezing in a new character’s origin story just in time for their next big blockbuster do this film justice? Are the negative reviews and reaction justified? Or could they have been fabricated to taint the film’s reputation? Philip and Andrew discuss that and more in this episode on Captain Marvel!
This movie checks all the marks for a superhero origin story. For some, that was not enough. But honestly, the point of this film is not just the story of Carol Danvers and how she gains super powers, it's a story about women, and how they are held back, and what they can do if they can reach their full potential. This aspect of the film is what makes it soar. This movie empowers, and it makes you feel good.
Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel is caught in the middle of a war between the Kree (a galactic empire that continues to spread throughout the galaxy) and the Skrulls (shape shifting aliens that can infiltrate, assassinate, and immitate any species). The biggest threat is the shapeshifting abilities of the Skrulls; they can imitate someone down to a molecular level and could be anyone. The Kree and the Skrulls have a reputation in the comics, and this movie bends those reputations and delivers something unexpected.
Marvel has gotten into the practice of using special effects to de-age some of their older actors, providing an opportunity to do flash backs that don’t rely on different actors trying to look like their more famous counterparts. In Captain Marvel however, the effect is seamless. In some of the earlier films like Ant-Man, the effect is used, and it works, but it is noticeable that a special effect is being used. In Captain Marvel, the CGI is not obvious, and therefore, you just get lost in the film and not in the special effects.
For some reason this film was attacked online by trolls and bots flooding the internet with fake reviews shining a negative light on the film. If you’re a fan of Marvel movies, there’s a good chance you will enjoy this film. However, the big takeaway from this film is the empowerment of women. The message that pours out between the frames is to get back up after you get knocked down. Stand up. Don’t let anyone lessen your power because of who you are.
This movie takes place in the 90's, giving it a grungy nostalgic feel. That also means it happens before most of the events in the entire MCU. This film also ties into Avengers: Endgame set to come out in late April. While the story of this film doesn't really fell like it directly feeds into any other MCU film, it will definitely give you back story to better understand Captain Marvel's inclusion in Endgame.
Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies.

Optimus Prime, possibly the coolest and most popular fictional robot hero of all time, is not the main focus of this film. Instead, we get second best... but is that bad? Could this be the best Transformers movie ever made? It features the franchise's most popular sidekick, and villains that are not top tier, yet this film soars above and beyond the "Bayhem" of its Michael Bay directed predecessors. Listen in to hear what Philip and Andrew thought about the first Transformers film that featured the quiet little yellow Volkswagen; Bumblebee.

Is physical media dead? Digital downloads and streaming have revolutionized the home video experience. Affordable and convenient, it seems to be the go to for consumers when they shop for movies. Has it made physical media obsolete? DVD’s and Blu-Rays… are they, like VHS and Beta Max, a thing of the past? Philip and Andrew discuss two articles that take each side of this debate and weigh in themselves.

Happy Death Day (2017) repeats over and over and over and over...

An unoriginal, original idea. Happy Death Day takes the concept of a movie like Groundhog Day, and sets it within the Horror Genre. The Brothers Brotastic look into what makes this movie stand out when the trope of reliving the same day repeatedly is overshadowed by the Bill Murray classic. This movie didn't take itself too seriously, but that may have been what made it work. How many tickets do Philip and Andrew rate this fresh take on a classic concept?

Happy Death Day (2017)

Directed by Christopher Landon

Written by Scott Lobdell

Starring Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Charles Aitken, Rob Mello, Rachel Matthews, and Phil Vu.

CB - S2E01 - Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse

CB - S2E01 - Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse

The new year is looking Brotastic! Philip and Andrew are back from the break and start off Season 2 of Cinematic Brotastic with Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse, a unique blend of animation styles that don’t clash, but rather creates a one of a kind viewing experience that has the added bonus of being family friendly as well.
The Cast includes Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Valez, Zoё Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn, Live Schreiber, Chris Pine, Natalie Morales, Oscar Isaac, Greta Lee, and Stan Lee.
Philip and Andrew welcome each other back from the break and talk about what they have seen in the meantime. Both saw Skyscraper, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but not together. Tey then discussed what TV show they were hooked on at the momen: Philip is watching “The Walking Dead’ and Andrew is hooked on “Manifest” on NBC.
Now into the Spider-verse! At first Andrew was reluctant to take his children to see the film fearing it would be too violent or inappropriate. However, upon hearing that Philip was going to take his children, Andrew reevaluated his opinion. After looking at a parental guide to how appropriate films are for families, Andrew was comfortable taking his children.
Philip and Andrew had few complaints, if you could call them that, about Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse. Green Goblin was huge for some reason, making him more like a monster than a costumed villain. Then there was Prowler, a Batmanesque villain that neither brother was familiar with. Almost thought it was newly invented for the film.
This film featured not one Spider-man, but 6 Spider-people. Miles Morales who is the subject of the film, hen there was Peter Parker, we all know him. Next up is Gwen Stacy, a love interest of Peter's, but this version has the spider powers instead. now on to the even lesser known heroes. Spider-man Noir, a Humphrey Bogart style Peter Parker hailing from a black and white dimension, and of all the doors he had to walk. into, he had to walk into ours. Peni Parker, a Japanese animé styled version from the future, sporting a spider-mech suit operated by a spider that was also her father? And last but not least, Spider-Ham, a pig named Peter Porker, who has spider powers.
Touching back on the unfamiliarity of the Prowler, Miles Morales has the powers of Spider-man, and then some. On top of wall crawling, he has Venom Strike, a directed energy from his hands that causes paralysis. Then he has camouflage, an ability to match his surroundings that makes him virtually invisible. After looking these up, Philip and Andrew quickly realized they are cannon to the comics.
The Brothers Brotastic equally rated this film Two Tickets. It's fun, its family friendly, its unique, and both would go back to the theater in a heartbeat.
Until Next time, we'll see you at the movies.

EP 28 - Aquaman

EP 28 - Aquaman

Thanks to an Amazon Prime Exclusive offer, Cinematic Brotastic was able to see Aquaman one week before it comes out. The latest installment in the troubled DC Cinematic Universe, Aquaman comes at a crucial time to see if DC can rise above and be liked by fans and critics alike. Does the Half Human Half Atlantian save the DCEU like he saves the world? Listen in to this latest episode of Cinematic Brotastic!

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Temuera Morrison. It is directed by James Wan who is known for Saw, The Conjuring, And Fast and Furious 7.

Philip and Andrew give a brief rundown of the DC Cinematic Universe leading up to Aquaman. They also talk about the troubled history the productions have had with the exception of Wonder Woman.

This film is very special FX heavy. There may not be a way to get around the special FX with a movie that takes place predominantly under water with fantastical locations and creatures.

Philip is a little tired of the effect of de-aging older actors to play younger versions of themselves. and both Andrew and Philip think this film leans too much on clichés and familiar styles to really stand out completely.

The film is not entirely bad. Both were entertained and enjoyed seeing the film. Andrew was particularly impressed with the depiction of the non action scenes that took place underwater where characters spoke to each other; the flowing hair and movement as if underwater stood out as opposed to characters walking around a room. He also liked the depiction of Black Manta, though not the main villain of the film, a formidable foe for sure.

How involved was Zack Snyder? He started the DCEU, but he's not so involved now. He has a credit on this film along with his wife, but Andrew and Philip think he probably didn't do too much. Andrew points out that he gets a lot of the criticism over the troubled productions of the DC movies, but everyone seems to applaud the casting choices. Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and Ezra Miller have all been praised for their takes on their respective characters, and Zack Snyder was behind each of their casting.

Philip gives this film 1.5 tickets, he's glad he saw it, and thinks he'll see it again in the future, but he's not rushing back to the box office to see it again immediately. Andrew gives this movie 2 tickets. He feels that there was a lot crammed into the movie, but not in a way that rushed over things to move on to the next scene. Because of that, he feels that he may have missed some things.

Episode 27 - Swamp Thing (1982)

Episode 27 - Swamp Thing (1982)

Philip surprises Andrew with an early entry into the Superhero Film Lexicon with Swamp Thing. Watching the beginning of the film to see if Andrew can guess what the film is, Andrew guesses very quickly. They then discuss the 3rd film from DC comics following Superman I and II. How does it hold up? Well, that’s a mixed bag…

When Andrew is told the film is a comic book movie and the opening shot is of a swamp, it’s not hard to guess what it is. Philip and Andrew then discuss how well this film has aged. In some ways well, in other ways, not so much. attitudes toward women are very different, and things happen in the workplace that would make HR cringe.

Some costumes hold up, some not so much. Andrew is impressed with the fact that this film was in fact filmed in a swamp, which he imagines would be very difficult on the actors, the crew, the gear, etc… yet they pulled it off. Today the film would most likely be filmed in a pool on a sound stage.

Philip and Andrew then applaud the character of Jude, played by Reggie Batts, which seems to be his only film roll according to IMDd. His character required the Brothers Brotastic to pause the movie with basically every line he delivered because it was so funny, they had to collect themselves.

Philip and Andrew then discuss whether or not nostalgic films are worth revisiting like classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some films just imprint onto you, no matter what, they will always be great, even bad films. But then there are films you think are awesome, but then you watch it, and you take back what you said.

Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies!

Cinematic Brotastic - EP 26 - No Scars, Daredevil Cancellation, and Stream Wars

The Brothers Brotastic have been on a bit of a hiatus due to sickness and holidays, but they are back!! Right out the gate they tackle an issue with the British Film Institute saying no to scarred villains. Bad news for James Bond films. Also Daredevil's Cancellation, as well as the bevy of streaming services; are there too many?

Philip and Andrew welcome each other back from Thanksgiving break and recall the holiday as both pleasant and not so pleasant. Some people got sick.

Next up, some of the movies they have seen since the last show, Halloween, The Meg, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald. Philip enjoyed Halloween and The Meg. Andrew thought Fantastic Beasts was okay, but did not stand on its own.

The BFI announced that it will no longer fund movies that depict the villains with scars. They feel that real life scar victims shouldn't live with the stigma of being evil just because they have a scar. Philip and Andrew both understand this issue, but Philip has an issue with BFI making that choice for the filmmaker. Both the brothers however do see that it might be off-putting to be a scar victim and any time you see a person who looks like you in film, its a villain. BFI also announced they are funding a movie starring a real life burn victim in a roll about scars.

Netflix cancelled Daredevil, and both Andrew and Philip feel like that was the final nail in the coffin for Netflix's Marvel shows. Luke Cage and Iron Fist got the boot about a month ago, but they also were not as successful as Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Will they live on with their current actors? Or will they be recast and rebooted later?

Finally, Streaming services!! So many!! Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, CBS All Access, DC Universe. But then, Warner Media is planning a service, Disney is planning a service. More are sure to be on the way. Is it really cutting the cable if you subscribe to 8 or more streaming services? They don't have 2 year contracts like cable and satellite services have, so there is that.

Until next time, We'll see you at the movies.

The Witness and the History of 911 - CB - S1E25

The Witness and the History of 911 - CB - S1E25

Stumbling across an article about the history of 911, Andrew discovered an eye opening documentary about the infamous murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964. Is it true that over 30 witnesses to a heinous crime saw and yet did nothing? Is this film biased from the perspective of the brother left behind? Listen in and find out?

The Witness (2015) is a documentary directed by James Solomon. It follows William Genovese, the younger brother of the victim of one of the most studied murders in recent American history. He sorts through court documents and police records over 50 years old to discover that all the reports from newspapers about the 38 witnesses who did nothing, may not be entirely true.

Philip and Andrew discuss their thoughts on the documentary and its presentation. Both are shocked by multiple reveals about possible faulty reporting by esteemed journalists and witnesses saying they made multiple calls to the police.

The film barely mentions that the murder of Kitty Genovese helped in the birth of the 911 emergency system. however, since the documentary was discovered while reading an article about 911's history, Philip and Andrew talk briefly about how the idea of 911 was around in the late 1950's, but didn't go into effect until 1968. It is believed that the shock of 38 witnesses not calling the police, pushed the agenda to get 911 out there.

Landline 911 calls immediately inform the dispatcher who is calling and from where, but cell phones don't. Facebook and Google can locate a user's phone with high degrees of accuracy, yet 911 can't.

Philip and Andrew both go into personal accounts where they called 911 from their cell phone and had difficulty getting authorities to their location because of circumstances beyond their control.

Until next time, we'll see you at the movies.

Do unsubstantiated claims about movie characters and plot lines from people on the internet have any merit?
