2021 S2 E5 - Civilian Exposure Podcast

In this episode, we sit down with guest Joe Mangano to discuss the mission and purpose of his group The Radiation and Public Health Project (www.radiation.org) We have a fascinating and eye-opening discussion about radiation exposures, the impact on human health , and the broader DNA impacts. Finally, we focus in on his latest project - The Tooth Fairy Project - testing 100s and 1000s of baby teeth from as far back as the 1950s to uncover the true impacts of radiation exposure on the population.

Joseph Mangano is a health researcher who has served RPHP since 1989. Mangano managed the study of Strontium-90 in baby teeth and is author or co-author of 33 medical journal articles on radiation health. Author of the books Low Level Radiation and Immune System Damage: An Atomic Era Legacy (1998) and Radioactive Baby Teeth: The Cancer Link (2008).

Mr. Mangano currently manages the citizen-based radiation monitoring programs near the Indian Point NY and Oyster Creek NJ nuclear plants.

2021 S2 E4 - Civilian Exposure Podcast

In this episode, we sit down with guest Paul Griego, a radiochemist, to discuss his involvement and exposures during the cleanup of the Marshall Islands from 1977-1980. The Marshall Islands Atomic Cleanup was a Joint Task Force of military and non-military personnel. During the atomic cleanup, all personnel lived on two military bases - Enewetak and Lowja. As young men and teenagers, they were given a futile and dangerous task to 'cleanup' the nuclear fallout and debris of 43 atmospheric nuclear weapon tests. The group attempted to gather the highest level of radioactive material and dump it into a nuclear blast crater. They dumped 110,000 cubic yards into a nuclear blast crater on Runit Island before covering it under a massive concrete containment dome, which today is leaking.

We dive into the various radiation exposures and issues endured by enlisted and unenlisted participants, the impact on health and bodies of those exposed, the broader DNA impacts, and the toll these exposures take on loved ones and family members.

In this episode, we sit down with guest Kathy Sinai to discuss the mission and purpose of her group Children of Atomic Veterans (www.childrenofatomicveterans.org) We dive into ionizing radiation exposures in the military, the impact on health and bodies of those exposed, and the broader DNA impacts. We also talk about the larger issue of military contamination at a variety of bases across the country and how to address this systemic problem and its impacts on those who served or worked aboard them.

This is the group's vision statement:

Children of Atomic Veterans helps bridge the global gap to provide easier access to relevant information. If our information or resources benefit others affected by radiogenic cancers or genetic impacts of radiation exposure by any other circumstances, that will be a bonus. Our focus is to the service men and women around the globe and their families, as it poses particular challenges due to the levels of secrecy required, government and regulatory agencies, and records restrictions involved with service personnel. Civilians impacted by these research and test events have far more resources and substantially easier access to the necessary care, information and compensation options.

2021 S2 E2 - Civilian Exposure Podcast

In this episode, we sit down with guest Bill Bonk to discuss his new book - Exposure: Surviving Historical Ft McClellan. Bill walks us through the situation and all of the various chemicals and exposures typical at Ft. McClellan, including ionizing radiation exposure. We also talk about the larger issue of military contamination at a variety of bases across the country and how to address this systemic problem and its impacts on those who served or worked aboard them.

Bonk, a licensed private investigator, draws attention to the real possibility that veterans, their families, and civilians once assigned to now-closed Fort McClellan (FMC), Alabama were subjected to hazardous environmental conditions to include chemical weapon material and toxic chemicals starting in the early 1950s and continuing through 1999 and beyond.

At this point, Bonk says the government “seemingly has no interest in even determining if FMC veterans are suffering from occupational illnesses due to the chemical exposure” and doesn’t presume that any adverse health conditions are associated with service at the post despite the expenditure of billions of dollars to “investigate” contaminants on, around, and under the historical FMC and cleanup of the adjacent town and Army depot. “We truly don’t know what we don’t know about the hazards on the historical FMC until we peel back the layers and connect the dots,” according to Bonk.

2021 S2 E1 - Civilian Exposure Podcast

In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Jim Van Keuren to discuss his new book - The School Poisoning Tragedy in Caledonia, Ohio. Dr. Van Keuren takes an in depth look at the consequences of contaminated military lands that are later reused for civilian purposes without proper cleanup and remediation.

In the early 1960s, the River Valley Local School District built its middle school, its high school and its athletic fields in the former Marion Engineer Depot. During World War II, the depot had used the land for heavy equipment rehab, military artillery practice, materials storage, burial of construction debris and burning of waste materials and fuels. In 1997, a River Valley High School nurse grew concerned about the high rate of leukemia and other cancers in graduates. Then a stunning news report announcing a 122 percent increase in death rates over thirty years in the Marion area sparked an investigation.

Was the land to blame? The question of what may have been known about the contaminates on the school grounds sent shock waves through the community that still linger today.

Dr. James Van Keuren, EdD, is a retired professor of educational administration and dean of the Dwight Schar College of Education at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, where he published numerous juried journal articles, including a book titled Web-Based Instruction: A Practical Guide for Online Courses. Prior to Ashland University, Dr. Van Keuren was a teacher, high school principal, school superintendent, assistant and interim state superintendent of public instruction in Ohio. In A Tribute to the 109th Evacuation Hospital (SM), he traces his father-in-law's service time during World War II with a second edition reflecting the integral role that nurses played in the unit. His most recent book, World War II POW Camps in Ohio, examines the Germans and Italians who were housed in Ohio during World War II.
