She’s written about her life as a young girl growing up in the East End of London, of her Mum and Dad and Uncle Yudi, and her WWII war-time experiences. The Royals played an important role in own her life, as they did with millions of other Brits. And this is reflected in the following podcast.

After a lifelong career as an actress, art gallery owner, writer, and editor, in her 70s, she embarked on a remarkable new journey, to become a rabbi. After six years of study, at The Academy of Jewish Learning, in Los Angeles, at the age of 79, in 2015, she was ordained, and began a new career, when most of us are putting the challenges of life to rest. She serves as a Dayan, leads a pluralistic study group, and is a guest rabbi on lengthy cruises.

Many of our listeners will not be cognisant of the numerous unsung Jewish heroes amongst us. Muriel Phillips Engelman was one of them. Engelman was one of the last surviving U.S. Army nurses to serve near the front lines during World War II. She died this past June 2022. She was 101 years of age.

At the start of the Second World War in 1939, in the first three days of official evacuation, 1.5 million people were moved: 827,000 children of school age; 524,000 mothers and young children (under 5); 13,000 pregnant women; 70,000 disabled people and over 103,000 teachers and other ‘helpers’. Children, including Kitty Wintrob, were parted from their parents.
