Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

We took an extended break, but we’re back, and we are discussing rumors of a transfer portal in Washington high school sports.

That is not the plan, we assure you.

The WIAA is looking at its transfer policies, and there could be major changes, but a transfer portal is not in the works, according to Mick Hoffman, the WIAA’s executive director. We discuss what is in the works as the WIAA researches different approaches.

We also give a shout out to Skyview softball and Union boys soccer, with a month to go in spring sports.

Plus some breaking news. Well, not anymore. But kind of breaking news with Battle Ground hiring a new boys basketball coach.

And a salute to Union baseball for its Honor Game earlier this week.

The podcast format is simple. Tony Liberatore of Vancouver Public Schools and Cale Piland of Evergreen Public Schools give their thoughts, along with Clark County Today reporter Paul Valencia. Liberatore and Piland are longtime sports administrators. And Valencia has been a sports reporter in the region for more than 20 years.

We lead with high school sports. Then talk college and pro, too. And usually a few light items beyond sports.

We’re always interested in subject ideas for a future podcast. Email us a subject idea.

Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

In this episode, we talk about the calm before the storm. It’s spring sport season for high schools, but most teams are about to take a break for spring break. Then it will be time for the stretch run. Oh, and this year will be the traditional spring sports championship schedule. Next year, though, the WIAA is changing the schedule.

We also talk about state football championships returning to Husky Stadium for the next two seasons.

Then we get into Major League Baseball, March Madness, and for some reason, old-school USFL.

Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

In this episode, we salute the Camas girls basketball team. A team on a mission ever since last year’s loss in the championship game. This year? The Papermakers are state champions. We discuss this great team, and a little behind the scenes of how Clark County Today was able to produce a special video of the team celebrating that championship.

We also talk about the state tourney in general, storming the court in high school vs. college, and we get into what could be the biggest news in Clark County history: In n Out Burger is on the way!

(And a clarification: I love Burgerville and appreciate its local roots. I just find In n Out Burger, and its pricing, to be better suited for me!)

By Paul Valencia with ClarkCountyToday.com

Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

We say congrats to all the Clark County wrestlers who won state championships at Mat Classic, including four champions from Skyview. What a night!

We also discuss the upcoming state basketball tournaments, seeding, and yes, the ridiculous RPI announcements from the WIAA that means absolutely nothing. Yes, we touched on that on our last episode, but we returned to the subject because of the confusion that the WIAA allows when posting RPI every week, even though the selection committee does not use the RPI! Stop the madness!

And we recap the Super Bowl, which was a terrible matchup for a couple of us.

Clark County Today Sports Podcast, Feb. 9, 2024: Union hires state champion football coach; RPI explained; football scheduling; and NFL talk

Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

Perfect timing, right? We recorded this episode just an hour or so after Union announced that Steve Pyne is the school’s next football coach.

You know, Steve Pyne, the five-time Oregon state champion coach from Central Catholic. Pyne resigned from Central Catholic to coach at Union? Wow! That was worthy of discussion.

We also talk about the WIAA and RPI and how RPI is just something to get a conversation started. Nothing else. It is not used for seeding purposes toward state tournaments anymore.

Oh, and then we talk high school football scheduling, with the news that Columbia River and Skyview are not scheduled to play each other in the fall of 2024.

And, of course, we have Super Bowl talk. Not a fun matchup for our hosts. We don’t care for these teams, but we will always celebrate the national sport of football.

The podcast format is simple. Tony Liberatore of Vancouver Public Schools and Cale Piland of Evergreen Public Schools give their thoughts, along with Clark County Today reporter Paul Valencia. By Paul Valencia at ClarkCountyToday.com https://tinyurl.com/384fuk5d

Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

In this episode we discuss the recent Week 10 high school football games in Washington. Those games are not state playoff games, but they are playoff games. And there were very few close matchups. In Class 4A, maybe four of the 16 games were close. In 3A, the closest game was a 14-point win, and that really wasn’t close.

Does this mean that the gap between the haves and the have-nots in high school football is becoming too wide? We discuss.

We also talk about the seeding process for state playoffs.

Beyond high school sports, Paul Valencia shares some personal sports-related news. Hint: It’s about his passion for the Raiders.

Reporter Paul Valencia and sports administrators Tony Liberatore and Cale Piland talk about high school sports and more

By Paul Valencia with ClarkCountyToday.com

Welcome back to the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

In this episode we preview some incredible football games, including the Skyview-Camas battle in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.

And we ask: Can a team be cursed in high school football?

There is no doubt that Camas has had the best overall football program in Clark County for the past decade or so. With that said, the Papermakers have not always had the dominant team in this rivalry, every year. In fact, many times, Skyview has appeared to have the upper hand. But at the end of each meeting, it’s Camas with the win. As in, 12 consecutive meetings.

In other key matchups, Seton Catholic is hoping to take down perennial power La Center in a game of unbeatens.

Back in 4A, it’s Battle Ground trying to stay undefeated, taking on Union.

And every game in the 2A GSHL matters.

Beyond high school sports, we also talk about rooting for pro athletes who used to play on our favorite teams but are now playing for teams in the playoffs. When your favorite team does not make the playoffs, do you root for players who used to be on your team?

Tony Liberatore of Vancouver Public Schools and Cale Piland of Evergreen Public Schools give their thoughts, along with Clark County Today reporter Paul Valencia.

We’re always interested in subject ideas for a future podcast. Tony and Cale are experts in administration for high school sports, and Paul has seen a few things in his decades in Southwest Washington sports. Email us a subject idea.

Clark County Today Sports Podcast, Episode 1

Introducing the Clark County Today Sports Podcast.

We hope to come up with a better name, but until then, we’ll go with this.

Longtime Clark County reporter Paul Valencia is teaming up with longtime coaches and athletic administrators from two large school districts to talk about high school sports, and a little bit more.

In this first episode, we get to know Tony Liberatore, a Columbia River High School graduate, who later became the athletic director at Columbia River. He is now an associate principal at Fort Vancouver.

We also get to know Cale Piland, a Mountain View High School graduate who would become a state champion football coach and is now the athletic director for Evergreen Public Schools.

Two Clark County icons who have lived here their whole lives. Teaming up with Paul Valencia, who has covered high school sports in Clark County since 2001.

We also talk a little bit about officials. We got some good news. After years of losing officials, their numbers are increasing.

For now, the podcast will be a couple times a month. In the future, we hope to interview athletes and coaches. And we’ll tackle subjects associated with high school sports. We’d appreciate any subject ideas from you. Just email Paul Valencia: paul.v@clarkcountytoday.com

Valencia said he is looking forward to highlighting athletes and coaches from throughout the county, but also to get the perspective of Liberatore and Piland — subject matter experts in sports administration in Clark County.

Thanks for listening.

Behind the Stories EP 2: Chris Brown

For the second installment of our new video podcast, “Behind the Stories,” we hear from Clark County Today reporter Chris Brown. Over the course of the past year, Brown has spent many a day covering the pandemic through the issues of case numbers, public health, school closures, community concerns, businesses, vaccines, and more.

We talk about the unexpected positives, or at least innovations, that have arisen out of the chaos of 2020, and delve into what’s next. Brown shares his perspective as a journalist on how to process tragedy and continue to highlight some of the positives. Get an insider’s look into what it takes to cover a global pandemic from the angle of life in Clark County, no matter the challenges.
