Dr Kalpana Vishwanath is the co-founder of Safetipin. In this episode, ‘Understanding the Future of Safety In Cities’, with Dr Kalpana Vishwanath, we discuss the meaning and different aspects of safety, the need for gender-friendly cities, the problem of women’s exclusion, parameters to measure cities & safety audits, the role of technology (apps & CCTV), relevant infrastructure, and municipal corporations in making the city safer.

We start the discussion by understanding what safety actually means, followed by the understanding of the different aspects of safety in a city. Then we talked about the exclusion of women and how it’s unsafe for them after dark. We discussed ways to bring inclusiveness. We further discuss the parameters to measure cities on their safety and perform safety audits through the use of technology. Then our discourse moves towards the ground realities in today's cities, issues of lighting & dark spots in several parts, and how putting up CCTV is not a long-term solution, rather it’s only for assistance. She also explains how the Safety Pin app works and how it uses the citizen responses to address their problems. Further, the discussion moves toward understanding the role of municipal corporations in the city and how they are instrumental in providing 360-degree safety to the citizens. Then we discuss the need to create an ecosystem and create a communication channel between all the stakeholders for effective implementation. Then the discussion moved towards developing relevant infrastructure to improve safety. Lastly, we talk about different types of skill sets required to make cities safer.
