Ep. 86: Youth and High School Athlete Performance Nutrition
Nutrition is the foundation of everything when it comes to performance and recovery. It is really hard to build a high performing athlete if they aren’t fueled in a way that allows them to do what they need to do.
In this episode, Rusty Murphy asks a lot of the questions he had as he was coming up as an athlete and what he has heard in his current work as a coach. Our very own Andrew Jagim PhD breaks down some of the key components that youth and high school athlete should focus on. We specifically don’t get into supplementation (future episode) but talk about why nutrition is the foundation from which an athlete is built upon. Check it out and let us know if you have any questions.

Ep. 85: Youth and High School Performance Training
Performance training at any level can be complex, but it doesn’t need to be. With youth and high school athletes, there is often a feeling of wanting to do more as that can put you ahead. Hard work is definitely part of the process but it has to be smart as well.
In this episode, we discuss what traying could look like and why more isn’t necessarily better. A lot can be accomplished by sticking to the basics a lot can be accomplished in not only maximizing performance but also helping reduce injury risk. We discuss in depth what that might look like and how you can work it into your training.
In This Episode
+What could training look like?
+How much is too much?
+What exercises should I focus on?
+Do I need to clean?
+How do you work in “conditioning”?

REPLAY: Research Review: Sleep and Strength
In this research review we are highlighting what Greg Nuckols has put together around the impact of sleep (or lack of it) on strength. The two studies below look at how sleep impacts strength and the findings weren’t quite as big as you might have thought. We discuss what this means, how it applies and how you still want to focus on sleep to make sure it is a priority but also that you can still get work done if you fall short on any given night. 1. Research Review: Effect of Warm Up Swings on Bat Speed
You often see baseball/softball players warming up with a weight on their bat or just a heavier bat and trying to time out swings. The thought is too warm up and get everything moving and potentially swing their regular bat faster. But does it actually accomplish that? In this research review they look at the weight of a warm-up bat and how it might actually impact actual bat speed. The results might be surprising. Reference: Montoya, B. S., Brown, L. E., Coburn, J. W., & Zinder, S. M. (2009). Effect of warm-up with different weighted bats on normal baseball bat velocity. The Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research, 23(5), 1566-1569. REPLAY: LI: Administrative Leadership
Being in administration doesn’t automatically make you a leader. Being a leader doesn’t always mean you’re in administration. An administrative position doesn’t necessarily mean a position of leadership and this can be key in how you communicate with your team and those who report to you. Being able to remain humble and continue to focus on your team and developing their human capital will be a game changer in how you interact with staff and the people you serve. We discuss some of the ideas around how you refer to yourself and your interaction with your team. Shin splints are a really pain in the tibia. If you have ever taken up running as a new hobby or you have jumped back into activity a little too soon you have probably had this soreness along the front or inside of your lower leg. While it is a frustrating injury it is also one you can address in a preventative fashion and you can correct. It takes some time and patience but if you address all the factors it will be well worth it in the end. Focus on form, technique and rehab and you'll be good to go in helping correct this extremely annoying injury. Injury Series: Plantar Fascia Pain
This is a new series from Clinically Pressed where for the next 10 weeks we will work out way up the body discussing common injuries and what you can do if you're suffering from one. We start with plantar fascia pain and general issues with the arch. This can be an debilitating injury but is one that if you can get to it to manage it early it can be controlled and dealt with. We discuss the anatomy of it, how to manage it early, modalities that we've had success with in treating it and rehab ideas to improve it and hopefully prevent it from coming back in the future.

Clinical Insight: Chronic Pain and the Radiculo-Neuropathic Myofascial Pain Model
In this Clinical Insight we take a shallow dive into the Radiculo-Neuropathic Myofascial Pain Model. This model was heavily influenced by Dr. Chan Gunn. It is a very solid model in the evaluation and treatment of chronic pain as it takes into consideration a lot of key components that play a role in the production of chronic pain. We talk through how the combination of Cannon’s Law, denervation and other factors play a role in chronic pain based on how this model describes it. At the end we discuss what are some practical recommendations that you can try immediately to see if there is something you can do if you are dealing with chronic pain. A topic that I used to be very into and had since faded for me but listening to an episode of Freakanomics brought it back to the front of my mind. Do the shoes you wear really matter? Research Review: Split v. Full Body Training Program
In this Reserach Review, Dr. Jagim talks about split vs. full body training in a group of non-trained women that assessed the changes in some performance metrics at the beginning and at the end. The volume/amount of exercises were equalized over the course of the week with the split group having shorter workouts but more frequency compared to longer training sesssions but fewer for the full body group. The results found that both groups got stronger to the same extent, so ultimately what they found is that both types of workouts were effective. From this study it appears you can utilize both types of training and still focus on getting the results that you want.

We live in a world where the extreme seems to be transitioning to the norm and when one extreme idea comes out, someone has to find something as far on the opposite side to counteract it. RR: Training to Failure
Is training to failure the best way to train? Is going hard all the time truly going to help you get the changes that you are desiring? Dr. Andrew Jagim takes a look at a study that tested just that. They looked at how trainign to only having 1 rep left in reserve vs. 4-6 reps in reserve and how that caused changes in strength. The results may be surprising to some who live by the “go hard or go home” style of training. Check it out and see what you can apply to your training program. #complicatedsimple #progressive #openminded #PBE #EBP #noagenda #performance #training #nutrition #health #wellness #athlete #athletictraining #science #chiropractic #rehab #prevention #clinicallypressed #phd

We did a small mini-review to help identify and discuss them. REPLAY: Ep. 81: "Wish I Knew"-Strength & Conditioning
The goal of any practitioner should be to continue to evolve and grow in their craft throughout their career. If you’re treating/training the exact same way you were 5-10 years ago you aren’t evolving and that could be a problem. In this mini-series I’ll be going through some of the things I “Wish I knew” earlier in my career and how I hope to get ahead of that in the future. The first subject is, strength and conditioning. I discuss both my own personal, wish I knew when it came to my own training and how much time was mis-used along the way and also the professional aspect of my strength and conditioning career. I get the distinct feeling I’m 5-10 YEARS behind where I could be and am in the process of catching up to ensure I’m doing it the best I can. The hope is some of these ideas will help others get to that point of understanding sooner than I did.
