Clinically Pressed

By Clinically Pressed
The long and short of it is that the three of us started getting together every Wednesday morning to drink coffee, take a break and figure out how we were going to make an impact (and how we could work together to do so). We called it 'Solving the World's Problems Coffee Hour'. We chatted about all kinds of ideas: research, new workouts, combining things, and crazy ideas we heard on podcasts.
Then it dawned on us. We should start a podcast.

Yep, that is how we thought we might be able to make a dent into the worlds problems (it all starts with a dent, right?) So here we are now. Several months of planning, brainstorming and politely asking Kyle's friend Justin (the awesome AV guy) if he could help us out.

So what it's all about is that Clinically Pressed is going to be a traveling podcast and we will be recording on location. We are going to interview experts around the country from all health/nutrition/performance professions as well as include round table discussions covering major topics and questions. Our goal is to provide as much information as we can that is useful to viewers/listeners, and do it all at no cost.

We want to make the complicated simple and make it something you can apply to your life. We hope you enjoy!

CI: Do Shoes Matter?
A topic that I used to be very into and had since faded for me but listening to an episode of Freakanomics brought it back to the front of my mind. Do the shoes you wear really matter? The episode talked about the evolution of shoes and what it means to your feet and some of the long-term health of your feet and body in general. In this Clinical Insight we get back into the discussion and offer some practical points to take away that you can apply to finding the “right” shoe for you. We also discuss time and place and that it doesn’t have to be one way or the other. Enjoy. Check it out. Ep. 80: Ego Is The Enemy
This episode is a combination of ‘What We Are Reading’ and ‘Leadership Insight’. Joel is joined by Rick Cox (see Leadership Insights) to discuss some of their favorite passages from the book ‘Ego Is The Enemy’ by Ryan Holiday. This book hit both of them real hard, in a good way, that and made them think deep on what they can focus on when it comes to their own ego and how it applies to everything they do. In this episode they pulled out 3 of their favorite passages each and discussed how they apply to not only athletic training but to strength and conditioning, and other health and fitness realms. We highly recommend this book to everyone and if you can open up and be humble, there is so much more you can do in the world in a positive way. Check it out. Research Review: Alcohol and Athletes
We recently did an episode discussing alcohol use and athletes. We wanted to follow that up with a quick review of some research on the topic. Looking at two articles (see below) we summarize what they found and how alcohol impacts athletes from the performance and recovery aspects. As with a lot of things, so much is dependent on context and how people choose to use alcohol. Check it out. Barnes, M. J. (2014). Alcohol: Impact on sports performance and recovery in male athletes. Journal of Sports Medicine 44, 909-919. Vella, L. D. & Cameron-Smith, D. (2010). Alcohol, athletic performance and recovery. Nutrients 2, 781-789. Ep. 78: Combat Sport Athletes Part I
In this part one of a two part episode we talk everything in regards to the training and care of combat sport athletes. Alex Friedman and Austin Schoen join us to discuss what it takes to not only train these athletes to help perform at the highest levels but also in how to keep them healthy when they are putting so much stress on their body at all times. Alex focuses on the strength and conditioning aspect and how there is so much you can do to not only train at the highest levels but also focus on injury prevention and resilience. Austin is a chiropractor and discusses how important it is to focus on the care of a combat athlete and how to balance the stress with trying to make movement as efficient as possible. Check it out. CI: The Importance of External Rotation
Strength and control through the external rotators of the hips and shoulders is something that we lose over the course of time due to many factors. When you revisit it again and see how it is a natural movement that an infant naturally learns and performs it makes you realize just how powerful being effective in this range is. Leadership Insight: Extreme Ownership
In this Leadership Insight, Rick breaks down the concept of ‘Extreme Ownership’ by Jocko Willink. Jocko isn’t for everyone but we highly recommend at least reading this book and digging into the concepts that Jocko presents. When all else fails Jocko returns to the concept that everything falls on you, the leader, and it should because that is what the role demands. Ep. 77: Alcohol and Athletes
The use of alcohol has been a part of athletics in numerous ways for as long as both have existed. Alcohol has been used by athletes to celebrate, relax, and potentially even help them get through competitions at times. But what does alcohol actually do to the training and adaptations that an athlete or someone who is working on their fitness? That is what we cover in this episode. How alcohol can impact your body and the training that you are doing. Also, is there a time and place for when alcohol could potentially help you out? Enjoy. UPDATED WI: Minding the Middle-Fitness, Nutrition and Beyond
We live in a world where the extreme seems to be transitioning to the norm and when one extreme idea comes out, someone has to find something as far on the opposite side to counteract it. Now, there may be a time and place for almost any extreme idea, intervention, workout, diet, etc. but for most of us life falls on a bell curve and things happen in the middle. This can be found in fitness, nutrition and wellness. It can also be found in leadership and how you interact with people. That is what this updated Wellness Insight covers and tries to get us all thinking about. REPLAY-Ep. 46: Eating Like an Athlete
Eating seems simple enough but when you are trying to perform at a high level it can get confusing very quickly. In this episode, Andrew Jagim PhD breaks down what it looks like to eat like an athlete. A common pitfall to training at the highest levels (whatever they may be) is not consuming enough to fuel your body to achieve what you need. Dr. Jagim digs in deep here and helps lay a great framework for consuming enough calories to enhance both recovery and performance. From there, many options exist to help build off this foundation. REPLAY: Ep. 63: Reiki Master-Shannon Amberg
This was a game changer episode as it took us outside of the normal treatment and approaches we typically had done and stretched our though of comprehension. So insightful and after talking with Shannon, have to consider something more out there that helps shape all of us. On this episode we have Shannon Amberg PhD and Reiki Master. This is the first of two episodes with Shannon as we try and scratch the surface fo what Reiki is and how energy healing works. We get into asking a lot of questions as Joel is relatively skeptical (even when trying not to be) when it comes to the body and energy and someones ability to actually read that energy.   Shannon does a great job breaking down what it is all about and how it can benefit everyone in one way or another.  There are some extremely interesting connections and ideas that you can come away with when you really listen to the ideas behind energy and how it runs our worlds. Wellness Insight: Minding the Middle
In a world of extremes in health and fitness it can be a good reminder to mind the middle. There are so many things that can work but they don’t work for everyone, no matter what anyone says. If there was a one size fix all, we’d all be doing it and that would be the end. That hasn’t occurred yet.
This is a friendly reminder of looking at due diligence that is necessary to make sure you are finding what works for you and not spending a fortune on it in the process. #complicatedsimple #progressive #openminded #PBE #EBP #noagenda #performance #training #nutrition #health #wellness #athlete #athletictraining #science #chiropractic #rehab #prevention #clinicallypressed #middle #mindingthemiddle #supplements #fitness#bellcurve

Ep. 73: Immune Boosts & COVID-19?????
There is so much uncertainty in the world right now. Being home, not working, scared of being sick. There are so many things that can bring stress especially if money is tight for the foreseeable future. With that, we have seen a lot of “scams” out there claiming immune boosts to fight COVID-19. While some of the things can help with your immune system there is no quick fix and trying to get people to buy things strictly on the fact that it can combat the virus is well…..wrong. This can be supplements, workouts, specific foods and diets. We understand people need to make money for small businesses and that is all good. What we do ask is, don’t do it on the back of a worldwide pandemic. Clinical Insight: Chronic Pain and the Radiculo-Neuropathic Myofasical Pain Model
In this Clinical Insight we take a shallow dive into the Radiculo-Neuropathic Myofascial Pain Model. This model was heavily influenced by Dr. Chan Gunn. It is a very solid model in the evaluation and treatment of chronic pain as it takes into consideration a lot of key components that play a role in the production of chronic pain. We talk through how the combination of Cannon’s Law, denervation and other factors play a role in chronic pain based on how this model describes it. At the end we discuss what are some practical recommendations that you can try immediately to see if there is something you can do if you are dealing with chronic pain.
