Coach Chat on Myths & Misconceptions of Plant-Based Living with LA Dunn

Have you ever thought about going plant-based, but figured it was either too expensive, too much work, or not tasty enough? LA Dunn, plant-based advocate and founder of Black Girls Eat, is determined to prove those assumptions wrong. For Black Girls Eat members, LA shares delicious plant-based recipes, tells stories about her own plant-based journey, and provides advice to families who are trying to transition to a healthier lifestyle.

In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette and LA discuss their own food journeys and the swaps they've made away from consuming meat, dairy, and processed foods, to eating more whole foods, vegetables, and grains. They discuss ways to remix your plate that won't take away from the comfort and authenticity of your cultural food favorites. They talk about the struggles for people of color to make healthy choices as we are more likely to live in food deserts. LA describes how she empowers grocery shoppers to invest in foods that make them feel their best. If you've ever thought about changing your diet, or want to hear about how small changes to the way you eat can completely transform your wellbeing, then this episode is for you! LA's energy, humor, and zeal for helping others is infectious, which makes this conversation one to remember.

Coach Chat on Decolonizing Mental Health with Melody Li

Coach Chat on Decolonizing Mental Health with Melody Li

The 2021 theme for World Mental Health Day is “Mental Health in an Unequal World.” This theme highlights the fact that between 75% to 95% of people with mental health issues in low and middle-income countries are unable to access the care that they need. In the US, it's not much better for people of color given that only 14% to 15% of U.S. psychologists are non-white. The good news: there is a movement to decolonize, disrupt, and dismantle oppressive mental health practices. That movement is being led by our Coach Chat guest, Melody Li.

Melody is a queer therapist of color and founder of Inclusive Therapists, a platform that offers a safer, simpler way for people of all identities and abilities in all bodies to find a culturally responsive, social justice-oriented therapist. Melody is a mental health liberation activist whose goal is to decolonize mental health and healing, especially for those who live at the BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ intersection.

Melody talks in this episode with Coach Colette about what it means to decolonize mental health and how colonizing practices impact those with marginalized identities. Melody shares their own decolonizing journey to healing from internalized shame, oppression, and white supremacy. They also talk about the power and necessity of telling your story and the importance of finding safe, healing, liberation-oriented communities — communities that take your mental health seriously and provide space for that storytelling. You don't want to miss this one— it's a conversation rich with meaning and reflection on how we can tend to ourselves and others.

You'll hear how play is a muscle that you need to strengthen if you want to foster community, collaboration, and innovation.

Coach Chat on Nourishing the Spirit Within with Anita Kopacz

Coach Chat on Nourishing the Spirit Within with Anita Kopacz

Content Warning for sexual trauma and gender-based violence

Have you ever felt a spiritual connection with an ancestor or other higher being? Have you ever had difficulty recognizing when your intuition is guiding you? These are just two of the eye-opening concepts explored in this Coach Chat conversation with Anita Kopacz. Anita is a spiritual psychologist, and author of the newly released novel, Shallow Waters, published through Black Privilege Publishing at Simon & Schuster. The novel imagines Yemaya, an Orïsha—a deity in the religion of Africa’s Yoruba people—in mid-1800s America. Readers meet Yemaya as a young woman who is not yet fully aware of the spectacular power she possesses to protect herself and those she holds dear.

When we're open, we can experience a lot through our senses, yet many teachings tell us to ignore those experiences. In this episode, you'll hear about Anita's first connection with a spiritual being, and how she was treated by others when they learned of her gift. She shares in the conversation that she has been connected to Yemaya since she was 18 years old. Coach Colette and Anita discuss how Western psychology fails to incorporate spirituality and indigenous traditions, and how this initially made accepting her abilities challenging for Anita. The two also explore how Anita's childhood experience of molestation became an inspiration behind her campaign, Zero F's Given, which aims to raise awareness and help survivors heal from sexual trauma, find their voice, and reclaim their power.

Coach Chat on the Power of Emotional Emancipation with Chandra Roxanne

Coach Chat on the Power of Emotional Emancipation with Chandra Roxanne

In recognition of BIPOC Mental Health month, it’s important to recognize that traditional mental health care solutions do not take into account all of the self-affirming, healing practices that exist within Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other communities of color. These tools, systems, and practices are valid, valuable choices that people of color can make to support their own mental health and well-being. In this Coach Chat episode, we hear from Chandra Roxanne about the Community Healing Network, an organization that exists to reinforce these self-affirming beliefs.

CHN hosts Ubuntu Healing and Emotional Emancipation Circles where Black people can gather and talk about what’s ailing them, not just externally, but what’s going on inside. In the episode, you'll learn more about the magic and renewal that occurs within these safe spaces. Chandra explains the meaning of emotional emancipation as well as why emotional resilience and self-reflection are key to Black liberation.

Chandra shares the mission of CHN to unravel and reject the lie of white superiority and Black inferiority on which the lie of white supremacy rests. She and Coach Colette reflect on the power of Black joy, and the enriching capability of African ancestry to renew Black minds, bodies, and spirits. The two also discuss the detrimental ways racism impacts BIPOC mental health and the importance of this impact finally being acknowledged more widely.

Coach Chat on Ida B. The Queen with Michelle Duster

Coach Chat on Ida B. The Queen with Michelle Duster

When you hear the name, Ida B. Wells, what comes to mind? Journalist? Suffragist? Civil rights pioneer? How about a dangerous Negro agitator? This was just one of the terms used to describe Ida B. Wells back in her day because she was intent on speaking truth to power and holding a mirror to the Black experience of that time. In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette has the privilege of speaking with Michelle Duster, author of Ida B. The Queen: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells, and great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells.

She’s an author and educator who has written, edited or contributed to numerous articles and 16 books. Michelle provides us an in-depth look into current efforts to commemorate Ida B. Wells: a street and a monument in Ida's honor in Chicago, a statue of Ida in Memphis, and a mural of Chicago suffragists, to name a few. Coach Colette and Michelle also reflect on current Black women leaders and revolutionaries who carry on Ida's legacy of speaking truth to power. Whether you're a history buff, racial justice or feminist activist, or just interested in hearing from a powerful public historian, this episode is for you!

Coach Chat on the Responsibility of Being First with Leang Chung

Coach Chat on the Responsibility of Being First with Leang Chung

Do you ever hear about a woman or person of color who is the "first" to accomplish a major milestone in an industry, and think: "Really, in 2021?" Well, our Coach Chat guest is no stranger to being first. Leang Chung was the first in her family to receive a Bachelor's degree, the first to have a job with an annual salary versus an hourly wage, and the first to become a corporate executive. It was these experiences of being "first" that inspired her to found her startup Pelora Stack, to help other underrepresented early-stage founders, mid-career women, and non-binary people prepare for their "firsts".

This Coach Chat conversation is the perfect culmination of Mental Health Awareness and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage months. You'll hear Coach Colette and Leang discuss how she was born into a refugee family from Cambodia and how her family values helped shape her perspective. Leang speaks candidly about the bias she faced early in her professional career, as well as her journey to discover her personal brand, learn how to communicate it, and how to create personal boundaries. She shares the difficulty of responding to microaggressions in the moment as an introvert. The two also discuss the detrimental mental health impacts on AAPI people that result from internalizing negative messages and battling stereotypes like the so-called "model minority" myth. Whether you're experiencing a first in your career or business, or if you're dealing with and processing racial trauma, you'll gain insights from this conversation.

Mental Health Month: Adapting After Trauma

Mental Health Month: Adapting After Trauma

As today is the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder, Coach Colette speaks in this episode on the topic of trauma. Research shows that after the killing of George Floyd, rates of anxiety and depression for Black and Asian Americans increased between 34 and 41 percentage points. How do you process and heal from trauma? Clearly, one doesn't need to be personally connected to the victims of violence to feel its damaging effects. Coach Colette discusses the importance of acknowledging what has happened instead of suppressing it and being honest with yourself. She also advises you to not compare your experiences and healing journey with others.

Additionally, it is key to take care of both your mind and body— whether that is through movement, breathwork, EFT tapping, focusing on your sleep hygiene, or meditation. Have you found a support network that encourages you in your healing process? Be sure to keep in mind that asking for help is a sign of strength. You deserve grace and patience during a difficult healing process.

Coach Colette appreciates you tuning in to the May Mental Health Month series. We hope you've learned to prioritize the steps it takes to preserve your mental health and foster resilience.

Mental Health Month: Releasing Anger and Frustration

Mental Health Month: Releasing Anger and Frustration

Did you know that today is Mental Health Action Day? It's a day that aims to move you from awareness to action and encourages you to take the first step in building resilience — whether that's seeing a therapist, joining a peer support group, starting a meditation practice, or reaching out to a friend. Make sure to check out their site here for more info on how you can get started.

How do you usually release your anger? Have you identified ways to work through anger and frustration, or do you find yourself bottling them up? In today's episode, Coach Colette discusses the distinction between minor daily frustrations and more sustained or systemic issues. She also validates the anger that many people of color feel towards ongoing racial violence and oppression, anger that is often gaslit by others and the media. Coach Colette provides some advice to help you release your anger through different activities and movements, learn and identify your triggers, and ask for help.

Mental Health Month: Self-Care and Self-Compassion

Mental Health Month: Self-Care and Self-Compassion

Did you know that on average, people spend only 15 minutes a day on health-related self-care? For this episode of Mental Health Month, during Women's Health Week, Coach Colette discusses self-care and self-compassion. What makes you feel grounded? She encourages you first to consider how you want to feel to help you decide what nourishing activities you want to take on.

Coach Colette also speaks to the importance of being kind to yourself, especially for women of color who may be internalizing negative stereotypes and perceptions perpetuated by the media. Are you saying no when you don't want to do something, even if you feel pressure to say yes? Are you setting boundaries in your relationships? Are you protecting your energy? All of these are important aspects of self-compassion, and as Audre Lorde calls it, self-preservation.

We're excited to share that Coach Colette has a NEW mental health resource— the 7-Days of Self-Care e-Journal that includes checklists, suggested actions, and worksheets to help track your progress on your self-care journey. If you need to find new ways to take care of yourself and a getaway from chaos at work, home, or in your own mind, then this journal could be a great resource for you! Get your journal here.

Have you ever heard of "languishing"? As we reach the end of Stress Awareness Month, in this week's episode, Coach Colette discusses a recent NY Times article by organizational psychologist, Adam Grant. In the article, Grant introduces the term, "languishing", as a possible description of how you might be feeling lately. The idea of languishing— a void between depression and flourishing, or a lack of total wellbeing— has resonated with many, including Coach Colette. She uses this episode to provide some advice for re-centering and gaining a little motivation. It could be physical activities or more mentally-stimulating activities— anything to get your body or mind moving and your soul more grounded. What's your go-to activity to ground yourself when you find yourself languishing?

Coach Colette gets real with you in this week's Unplugged segment— she acknowledges the way languishing has impacted her professionally, mentally, and emotionally. She's been feeling disconnected from her regular self-care habits and is seeking out new ways to get into that flow state. As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, Coach Colette will be introducing a plethora of ideas in the coming weeks to revitalize your own self-care habits. And, if you're in a place where the weather is warming up, why not take some of those practices outside? What self-care practices no longer serve you? How can you reflect on those habits and adjust them to feel your best?

Did you know that communities of color are drastically more impacted by environmental issues than their white counterparts? As yesterday was Earth Day, Coach Colette uses this week's episode to speak about environmental racism. She discusses the initial definition by Benjamin Chavis in 1982, as well as findings from a 2007 study that show just how unfairly the consequences of environmental pollution are distributed. Flint, Michigan, the lower Rio Grande Valley, and Guiyu, China are just a few examples of the way communities of color face serious health complications as a result of systemic racism and the selfishness and neglect of those in power.

How are you working to heal from the heaviness of the terrible instances of violence as well as the anxiety and anticipation of the trial? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette reflects on the guilty verdict in Derek Chauvin's trial earlier this week, and the heart-wrenching news of Ma'Khia Bryant's murder just a half hour before the verdict was released. She considers a statement from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison that differentiates justice from accountability, which lines up with the way she's been processing these events. Coach Colette advises you to allow yourself time to process, grieve, reflect, and heal yourself.

Did you know that this week is Black Maternal Health Week?  Black Maternal Health Week was established in 2018 by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and was created to promote education and advocacy around the experiences of Black Mamas. This year's theme is "Black Mamas Matter: Claiming Our Power, Resilience, & Liberation". In this week's episode, Coach Colette refers back to a live Let's Talk episode from March 2020 with Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo and Anthonia Akitunde about Black motherhood (Let's Talk: Black Motherhood). She considers how Black women are particularly vulnerable to both pregnancy-related deaths and complications of COVID-19. Conversations around maternal mortality largely focus on medical causes of death, while ignoring the root cause of racial disparities in healthcare: systemic racism. Be sure to check out the Black Maternal Health Virtual Conference going on today and tomorrow, April 16th-17th.

This week, another innocent Black person was shot by the police: 20 year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Coach Colette reflects on a Tweet that resonated with her about the ongoing, deadly crisis of police brutality. She encourages you to be mindful of your media consumption during such a difficult time— it is important to step off social media if it is compromising your wellbeing, and be sure not to deny your feelings. How do you practice self-care? Meditation, yoga, EFT-tapping, breathwork? Now, especially, Coach Colette advises you to nourish and take care of yourself. Consider donating to Daunte Wright's memorial fund here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/dauntewright.

What in your life causes you stress? April is Stress Awareness Month— a little ironic considering the year-long pandemic that's been plaguing us. In this week's episode, Coach Colette advises you to take stock of your stress triggers, and consider how stress manifests in your mind and body. How do you think about a stressful situation? Do you create stories in your mind that amplify your worries? It is important to think back to past stressful experiences and remember how you've gotten through them. What methods do you use to relieve your stress? Do you spend time in nature, journal, use essential oils, or practice EFT-tapping?

We know that right now, communities of color, in particular, are dealing with many layers of stress, so it's especially important for you to take time for yourself and consider limiting the amount of possibly triggering news and media you consume. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses her thoughts on preparing for re-opening— going back to in-person co-working spaces, social events, and workshops. As she is still waiting to get her vaccine, she's not quite ready to be "re-opening" her own life and recognizes her privilege in being able to adjust to in-person work at her own pace. How eager are you to go back to in-person work? What are you considering as you make this decision?

if you're living in the Northern Hemisphere, tomorrow marks the Spring Equinox. Given the challenging times we've had this week, let alone this past year, it can be a good time for self-reflection and consideration. What is it that you hope to accomplish or bring into reality during the rest of the year? It’s also a great time to think about spring cleaning, whether that is de-cluttering your home space, or organizing the files on your computer or phone. How can you let go of those things that are no longer serving you?

In light of the tragic loss and violence in North Georgia, we stand in grief and solidarity with the Asian-American Pacific Islander communities. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares insights from the nation’s leading coalition documenting and addressing anti-Asian hate and discrimination, Stop AAPI Hate. Did you know that there were 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian hate reported from March 19th, 2020 to February 28th, 2021? Or, that women reported hate incidents twice more than men? The shootings that happened this week shined a light on the increasing violence against Asian-Americans in this country and around the world. How will you choose to challenge hate, discrimination, misogyny, xenophobia, and white supremacy wherever you see it?

To learn more about what you can do to stop hate against the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, visit the Stop AAPI Hate website here. Tomorrow marks one year since Breonna Taylor was killed in her home. She was an award-winning EMT and first responder in Louisville, Kentucky. On the night of March 13th, the Louisville Metro Police executed a no-knock warrant and sprayed her home with 20 rounds of bullets, shooting Breonna eight times and killing her in her bed. In this episode of Financial Fridays, we share more about actions that still are being demanded of the Mayor and LMPD by her mother Tamika Palmer, one year later. You can visit the Justice for Breonna website here to learn more and visit the petition site here to add your name in support. Spread the word using the hashtags #BreonnaTaylor and #JusticeforBre.

By now, you've probably seen the interview by Oprah of Meghan and Harry. Did you have a visceral reaction while hearing of Meghan's trauma? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares her experience of watching the interview and then explores the concept of misogynoir. It's a term coined by feminist scholar, writer, and activist Moya Bailey in 2008 to describe the specific type of misogyny rooted in racism faced by Black women. She poses questions such as: How can you #ChoosetoChallenge misogynoir and continue the fight to eradicate it? As Black women, how do we continue to process and heal from the impacts of misogynoir? Monday, March 8th is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It’s also a day that signifies a call to action to accelerate gender parity in all spheres, whether that be in politics, in the workplace, in the media, anywhere. This year's theme is #ChoosetoChallenge -- a signal to call out inequity wherever you see it. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll hear about the important theory of intersectionality, coined by Kimberle Williams Crenshaw in 1989 to describe the impact of bias and discrimination on our social identities.

March marks another milestone. It’s been 1 year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette reflects on the year and shares her personal and professional silver linings in the cloud of the pandemic. She also encourages you to reflect by proposing some questions. How have you flexed your resilience muscles? As you look back, it’s an opportunity to harvest those lessons learned and to plant new seeds for what you would like to create and manifest going forward.

Nine years ago today, on February 26th, 2012, Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old young Black man, was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. This is a day to remember that we are still in the fight for social justice and equality. Since the death of their son, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin have committed their lives to transform tragedy into change. They created The Trayvon Martin Foundation to empower others to become catalysts for social change. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we pay tribute to Trayvon's legacy, and to those unarmed Black men and women who have been fatally shot by police officers nationwide since 2015 (at least 135 lives lost).

Did you know that just 2% of the population is what can be considered a true multi-tasker or so-called super-tasker? With the pandemic, it's likely that you've been doing nearly everything from home -- working, exercising, socializing, cleaning. How often do you focus on just one thing at a time? You might think that multitasking makes you more efficient when it is precisely the opposite. Multitasking actually makes it more difficult for you to focus, which means it’s easier for you to make mistakes; therefore, making it harder for you to be productive overall. In this week's Financial Friday, you hear ideas on how to be more single-focused and conscious in your activities.

Have you ever had a moment when you realized that you not only wanted to do something but that you couldn’t NOT do it? What did that feel like inside? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a personal founder's story about being vulnerable and asking for help to avoid missing out on an exciting opportunity for Libbie. You'll hear how the experience confirmed her desire and reignited her passion. Perhaps, you'll gain some insights on how to jumpstart your own enthusiasm -- personally or professionally.

Contributions to the field of mental health by Black practitioners have been long overlooked. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll learn more about Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, one of the first known Black psychiatrists. Solomon Fuller’s major contribution was to the growing clinical knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease. In 1903, he was one of the five students chosen by Alois Alzheimer to do research at the Royal Psychiatric Hospital at the University of Munich in Germany. While practicing at Westborough State Mental Hospital in Westborough, Massachusetts, Dr. Fuller performed ground-breaking research on the physical changes to the brains of Alzheimer's patients.

When you watch a movie or TV show, do you imagine yourself in the shoes of the lead character? How often does the actor portraying that character share some or all of your identity traits? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares another personal anecdote about her A-HA moment while watching Lupin on Netflix. She also discusses the emotional tax shouldered by women of color and how this burden impacts all facets of their health and wellbeing.

Coach Chat on Diversity in Venture Capital with Coach Colette and Shila Nieves Burney

Coach Chat on Diversity in Venture Capital with Coach Colette and Shila Nieves Burney

Studies have shown that merely 1% of venture-backed startup founders are Black, despite the fact that Black people make up over 13% of the US population. And it’s even worse for Black female founders, who receive less than 1% of venture funding. In the third quarter of 2020, over 1,300 startups raised between $500,000 and $20,000,000. Just 31 of them were Black founders. Today, only 3% of venture capital investors are Black.

That's what makes this first Coach Chat episode of 2021 even more exceptional! This conversation is with Shila Nieves Burney, the Founding and Managing Partner of Zane Venture Fund. Zane is a woman-led venture capital fund investing in the $4 trillion untapped market of diverse startups by funding undercapitalized founders and balancing the distribution of venture dollars. Zane invests in seed and early-stage companies, led by diverse founders and teams, building tech-enabled solutions primarily in the Southeast and across the U.S. Additionally, Zane Access provides early-stage founders led by diverse teams access to cross-functional experts, services, resources, and training critical to accelerating their growth.

Tune into this episode to hear Coach Colette and Shila dispel the myths about venture capital and refute the excuses given for the lack of diversity on both sides of the entrepreneurial spectrum. You'll also discover Shila's personal story of how she transitioned from being an entrepreneur founder to becoming a fund manager. She also shares tips for preparing to pitch to potential investors.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Yesterday was the first full moon of 2021, also nicknamed the full Wolf Moon. The full moon is an excellent time for releasing, letting go, and clearing out the things that are no longer serving you. What are the habits, beliefs, tasks, or even people that are no longer serving you? In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, gain some suggestions to explore these aspects as it relates to your finances and other areas of your life including your health and relationships. With the moon in Leo, consider: where can you bring out that roar of the lion (or that howl of the wolf) to fully express your deepest desires?

How much time have you spent alone during the pandemic? How has it impacted your mental health and wellbeing? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette explores loneliness and the different experiences of BIPOC women. For women of color, our loneliness, anxiety, and depression often looks different than for white women. Our tears, grief, and sadness are not greeted with the same level of compassion as the tears, grief, or loss of our white counterparts. So, we tend to build up a resistance and not speak about the things that are bothering us. Coach Colette shares statements from the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale so you can rate yourself and examine your level of loneliness.

Even though we may be celebrating the holiday on Monday, today is the actual birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette reads excerpts of the momentous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered on August 28th, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In light of recent events, it’s imperative that we recall his words and that we examine the condition of our republic today. Take some time to reflect on his message, his vision, and consider: What is it that you can do today to help further his dream?

What have you been taught to believe about your value at work, in the world, in your family, in your relationships? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette offers some prompts to guide you in your inner reflection on self-worth to help set intentions for the New Year. She also shares candid revelations about her challenges with doing this same practice this year. What might happen if you allowed yourself to challenge the myth to completely reinvent yourself for the New Year? What if instead of the usual trope, you instead chose to invoke a new mantra: New Year, Same You, New Habits? Or New Year, Same You, New Intentions? This could unburden you and reinforce the fact that you can develop new habits while still appreciating and celebrating all that you are right now. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll hear some prompts to help you envision what new habits and intentions you want to create for your financial wellbeing.

In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some candid reflections on recent events. During the week that pro-Trump, white-supremacist terrorists stormed the US Capitol, Rev. Raphael Warnock also was elected as the first Black senator to represent Georgia. We don’t want to miss the opportunity to celebrate this accomplishment, achieved in no small part by change agents like Stacey Abrams, who mobilized thousands of Black voters in Georgia to come out and vote. If you have been triggered by the incidents that you have witnessed this week, build in time for self-care. Take some ME-time, and know that not being okay is okay. We've got your back.

We wish a Merry Christmas to all listeners who are celebrating today. In this week’s episode of Financial Fridays, we also share a message about Kwanzaa, which begins tomorrow December 26th and ends next Friday, January 1st. This African-American and Pan-African holiday celebrates family, community, and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies. During Kwanzaa, activities are organized around the Seven Principles. Umoja or Unity is the first and foundational principle of Kwanzaa. We hope that during this holiday season of Kwanzaa that you are able to find ways to unite with family, friends, loved ones, and community.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

In the Northern Hemisphere, we’ve been experiencing early sunsets, shorter days, and longer nights. Monday, December 21st marks the transition into longer days and shorter nights with the Winter Solstice. This week's Financial Fridays episode offers a preview of the celestial events on Monday. It’s been a dark year in many ways for many of us. Why not reflect on how you can let more light into your life. How are you allowing your light to shine?

Also on the 21st, the two largest planets in our solar system will appear to look like they are merging in the night sky. Astronomers are calling it The Great Conjunction of 2020. Conjunctions happen when two celestial objects appear to pass close to one another as they are seen from Earth. This will be the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, forming what's being called the Christmas Star. It's been 800 years since this conjunction has happened at night, so you may want to take a peek!

What were your wins in 2020? What went well? What are you most proud of? With just two Fridays left in 2020, in this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a few prompts to help you to reflect on the past year. You know when you start within and pause to reflect, it's then that you can tap into your deepest knowing. You can tap into your inner wisdom.

Yesterday was Human Rights Day. The theme this year is Recover Better. We know that the COVID-19 crisis has exposed gaps in poverty, equality, discrimination, environmental degradation, and human rights protection. While the virus itself does not discriminate, it has highlighted the fact that people who are poor, marginalized, excluded, and discriminated against are more likely to get sick and not access testing. They are more likely to suffer the loss of a job, home, or other fundamental rights. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we explore some of these issues and share the pledge you can take to Stand Up 4 Human Rights.

Do you have a morning ritual? Do you give yourself any amount of time at the start of the day that is just for you? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette offers a personal anecdote about her morning ritual, and what happened one day this week when she tried to skip ahead and ignore it. She also provides additional reflection questions to begin pondering about 2020 and ease into your planning for the New Year. This week the focus is on health and self-care. Finally, she previews the upcoming total solar eclipse viewable from the Southern Hemisphere on Monday, December 14.

Did you know that December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month? With the colder weather and the days getting shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, it's important to be aware of how well you are coping. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short, is more than just Winter Blues or a seasonal funk. SAD is a real form of depression that is more commonly associated with the Fall and Winter months. How can you recognize the symptoms? They include low energy, depressed mood, hopelessness, irritability, anxiety, poor concentration, changes in your sleep, or loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed. In this week's Financial Friday's episode, you'll hear tips to help support your mental and physical wellbeing during this time.

Did you notice the full moon lunar eclipse that happened this week? Feel an impact on your energy or mood? Did you know that some consider the national holiday of Thanksgiving a reminder of the genocide and continued suffering of the Native American peoples? Participants in the Indigenous Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we share two resources [Native-Land.ca and JeremyNative.com] to foster conversations about the history of colonialism, Indigenous history, and settler-Indigenous relations. Both sites encourage us to become more aware of the real lives, the real lived history of Indigenous peoples and nations during the long era of colonialism. One way of doing so is to acknowledge the names of the tribes that once inhabited the land on which you live, something you can do on the Native Land Digital website.

How did you commemorate the holiday? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some anecdotes about her Vegan Virtual Thanksgiving! For what and for whom are you most grateful this year? It's really important to allow yourself time to reflect, time to pause and collect memories of gratitude and appreciation for yourself and for others. It's those memories and recollections that can really help to sustain you through difficult times.

Did you know that November is National Diabetes Month? More than 88 million American adults have pre-diabetes, or blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. The percentages of US adults living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes is 22% in the Latinx community, 20% in the Black community, and 19% in the Asian community. This is something that we need to take seriously. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we look at the broader implications of lifestyle choices and habits that can raise your risk of becoming pre-diabetic or of getting Type 2 Diabetes.

As Thanksgiving and the holidays approach, have you been thinking: What's the best way to celebrate? What’s the best way to gather in ways that are safe? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette gets personal about her own concerns and fears about meeting up with her family. To help alleviate feelings of confusion and doubt, as well as anxiety and fear, she also shares some EFT-Tapping exercises you can use to calm your nerves as you make decisions about the upcoming week.

Did you know that today is World Kindness Day? It’s a day to remember that kindness, compassion, care, and concern are important energies that sustain us as humans. Remember, kindness starts from within. The more self-compassion, self-kindness, and self-love that you can give to yourself, the easier it will be to express those same emotions to others. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette will lead you through a Loving Kindness meditation to help you extend loving-kindness to yourself and extend loving-kindness to others.

Where were you when herstory was being made last Saturday? In this week's Unplugged segment, shares a personal anecdote about her experience learning of the news about Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. She also provides commentary on an inspirational quote by Harris: "There will be people who say to you, ‘You are out of your lane.’ They are burdened by only having the capacity to see what has always been instead of what can be. Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

How have been you navigating and managing your stress this week? Ironically, Wednesday was International Stress Awareness Day. Chronic or prolonged stress can impact your sleep, your digestion, your mood, your irritability, your blood pressure, your risk for heart disease, and your immune system. It really is important that you be mindful of how your body and your mind have been dealing with the uncertainty. This Financial Fridays episode shares some healthful coping techniques for dealing with election stress in particular, and stress in general.

Did you do anything to distract yourself from waiting for election results? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares an anecdote about experimenting on a chatbot building platform to learn more about coding. She describes the irony of how the misplacement of one comma or colon can derail a whole line of code. If we extrapolate that to our current situation, we are literally counting votes one by one, and each one of those votes can make the difference. If anything, the closeness of the race has renewed her commitment to building Libbie to support Black and Brown women in the fight for justice, and the fight for mental and physical wellbeing.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Have you heard the phrase: once in a blue moon? There will be a blue moon on October 31, Halloween night. Tomorrow's Full Moon is also considered both the Harvest Moon because it appears nearest to the Fall Equinox, as well as the Hunter's Moon. The full moon is a great time for releasing things that no longer serve you. What do you wish to release?

The Halloween tradition is typically about trick or treating. Since 2020 has been nothing but tricks, why not focus on the treats. What are some ways that you can treat yourself this weekend? Perhaps include some pumpkin in your self-care routine to stay on the theme!

Have you made your plans to vote? In this week’s Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about her experience of early voting. Did you know that there are still discriminatory policies like voter I.D. laws, cuts to early voting, polling place closures, and limits to pre-registration? Most of the policies impact marginalized communities; whether that be people of color, people who have been formerly incarcerated, or other marginalized groups. This election is important, so make sure you stay informed and involved. At the same time,  ensure that you balance how much news you are watching because over-consumption can affect your mental health and wellbeing.

Coach Chat on Making Friends as an Adult with Coach Colette and Kat Vellos

Coach Chat on Making Friends as an Adult with Coach Colette and Kat Vellos

Did you know that loneliness makes you more likely to fall ill? It seems to prompt the chronic release of hormones that suppress healthy immune function. Biochemical changes from loneliness can accelerate the spread of cancer, hasten heart disease, and accelerate the onset of Alzheimer’s. The ironic part is that loneliness is subjective. No two people experience separation or social distancing in the same way. Making new friends as an adult was already complicated. Now, when you add in the pandemic, how are you supposed to retain your most important relationships?

That's why we reached out to Kat Vellos -- connection coach, user experience designer, and author of two books on adult friendships. In this episode of Coach Chat, Kat speaks with Coach Colette about the importance of forming new friendships as well as developing strong connections with your existing contacts. If you were in an emergency and needed support, besides your family, who would you call? How many people could you count on within a 2-5 block radius of your home? You’ll hear practical strategies you can use to strengthen your real-life social network, based on the work that Kat does to help people form more authentic relationships.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Human beings are wired for relationships. We thrive most when we’re connected and we feel lonelier when we're disconnected. In 2020, there have been lots of reasons why you may not be as in close proximity with friends, family, and loved ones. Sunday is National I Care About You Day. It's a great time to show the special people in your life that you care and appreciate them by calling or sending a text. Good relationships can promote better healing. Healthy relationships set the perfect tone for an overall healthy lifestyle, and they can give you a greater sense of purpose.

What is your definition of independence? You may have seen the memes or posts this week about extreme independence being a trauma response. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette describes her experience of independence as an only child and solopreneur. She describes the comfort of being able to rely on herself as opposed to the risk and vulnerability of letting people know when she needs help. Do you tend to overcompensate, to do everything yourself, to take it all on, and not ask for help? Everyone needs help at times and there is no shame in asking for it. If you're interested in reading the blog post about ultra-independence, click here.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today is National Mammography Day. Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women? More than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the US, and more than 40,000 women die from it. The good news is that there are over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Death rates from breast cancer have been going down since 1990 due to a number of factors. Chief among those factors is early detection.

Are you actively doing self-breast exams to check for indications of lumps? It is important to examine your body to be aware of any changes. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we explore the benefits of having a mammogram, which is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. Mammograms can often show a breast lump before you can feel it with your fingers.

Have you ever experienced being triggered by a small inconvenience, only to have it turn into an intense emotional reaction? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares personal anecdotes about not fully grieving the loss of Summer. There's so much happening in our world today with the pandemic, racial and social unrest, and the political landscape. Have you been giving yourself time to process, feel, and heal any anxiety or stress? If not, beware -- it can pop up and surface in ways that you may not expect.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Did you know that this past week was Mental Illness Awareness Week, or that tomorrow is World Mental Health Day? We’re still in the middle of a global pandemic, which is a type of collective trauma in addition to climate change-related disasters, financial stress, and civil unrest. Now is a great time to focus on your mental health, find ways to own your feelings, and move through emotional discomfort. In this episode of Financial Fridays, we explore some actionable steps you can take for your own benefit and for others. You also can get involved with mental health awareness and advocacy by contributing to mental health therapy funds or volunteering to assist others in need of care.

Libbie our mental health chatbot app for women of color received its first angel investment from 51 Unicorns. Also, Libbie is a finalist in the Voice Launch 2020 pitch event. All the great news! In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette candidly describes her initial fears about being thrust into the spotlight because of this innovation. This anxiety may be familiar if you're a woman of color who is already more visible in your professional or personal settings. Hear how Colette is navigating this part of her founder's journey, finding ways to recognize her feelings and move through emotional discomfort.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

October is a month in which there is much to recognize and commemorate. We'll start the month with a focus on Emotional Wellness and Emotional Intelligence Awareness. Emotional Intelligence has been shown to improve mental health, physical health, and other professional pursuits. A lower EI can hinder your relationships with others and can affect the way you relate with yourself.

In this episode of Financial Fridays, Coach Colette introduces the four domains of EI: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Paying close attention to the first domains relating to the self, she shares probing questions to help you reflect on how to become more self-aware, and have more self-regulation. This is discussed within the context of our current challenges of living in the pandemic and with rampant racial and social injustices.

Yesterday was the first full moon of this month in Aries. Full moons can be a great time to release what no longer serves you. Can you start to see what’s been holding you back, find ways to move into transformation, and to get more aligned? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some astrological insights from Virginia Rosenberg to help you discover lessons from the lunar energy. She also shares a personal anecdote of how she used her healing tools to help release anxiety and fear due to a panic attack during the night.

Coach Chat on Reclaiming Self-Worth with Coach Colette and Christine Gutierrez

Coach Chat on Reclaiming Self-Worth with Coach Colette and Christine Gutierrez

Did you know that Latinx is the second largest population in the United States? In 2001, Latinx founders made up 6.5% of all founders; while in 2019 they grew to 15% making theirs the fastest growing demographic launching companies. In the midst of Hispanic / Latinx Heritage Month, we're excited to connect with a Latina founder who is building a global community where like-hearted women come to heal, rise, and lead.

In this episode of Coach Chat, you'll meet Christine Gutierrez, a licensed spiritual therapist and author of: I Am Diosa: A Journey to Healing Deep, Loving Yourself, and Coming Back Home to Soul. As a healer, Christine uses modern therapy and ancient wisdom to help her clients channel in wisdom from higher realms. With a foundation of self-love, she facilitates supportive experiences and transformational retreats such as her annual Diosa Retreat in Puerto Rico, as well as the Diosa Tribe.

Cosmic Christine shares with Coach Colette how she discovered her mission to help heal the world, and how her definition of Diosa disrupts traditional narratives about femininity, spirituality, and wellness. These two healers also discuss the importance of women of color having their own safe spaces to share their stories, heal from trauma, and reclaim their self-worth.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Tuesday was the first day of Fall in the Northern hemisphere. Depending on where you live, temperatures may be starting to cool down, and leaves may be beginning to fall off the trees.  The Fall equinox offers us the opportunity to examine what you have harvested thus far and to reflect upon your abundance. How you can appreciate the Fall season. And, while you may be ready to finish 2020 as fast as you can, what are your intentions for this last quarter? What would you like to manifest as we approach the end of the year?

What would it feel like to be scared all of the time? What do you think it would do to your mental health and physical well-being? These are questions that Coach Colette asked of potential investors during her recent pitch of Libbie, our upcoming mental health chatbot to support women of color dealing with anxiety, stress, and trauma. This week's Unplugged segment includes a personal anecdote about the challenge of responding to investors who ask: "Why to focus just on women of color?" In light of this week's disturbing news about the ongoing lack of justice for Breonna Taylor, the answer seems obvious to many. Coach Colette again articulates her reasoning for intentionally focusing on helping women of color to heal and thrive.

Financial Fridays: Mindset and Money Tips from Coach Colette and Sukhtej Singh

Did you know that 1980 was the first year that the US Census offered Hispanic as an option to describe one's ethnic identity? In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day, this episode of Financial Friday focuses on the diverse cultural identities within the Hispanic and Latinx communities. We cannot ignore the fact that the word "Hispanic" does not reflect the diverse multinational, multicultural, and multilingual identities. It can be said that those who are not Hispanic (or Black for that matter) have gained from erasing experiences of the diverse range of cultural identities, whether they be Chicano, Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or other identities. This episode also celebrates the contributions that Latinx entrepreneurs are making to the US economy.

Have you been feeling tired, overwhelmed? This week was the New Moon in Virgo. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a personal anecdote about being more specific about what it was that she needed to heal this week. This New Moon can help you to examine all of the unprocessed, undealt with wounds; to look at the areas in which your energy is being drained; to look at where you may have been overextending yourself; to look at where you've been fighting against things, as opposed to allowing and receiving.

Coach Chat on Achieving Optimal Mental Health with Coach Colette and Dr. Alfiee

Coach Chat on Achieving Optimal Mental Health with Coach Colette and Dr. Alfiee

Did you know that 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year? Or, that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34? Black and Latinx youth may experience even higher rates of some psychiatric distress due to a number of environmental challenges that place them at risk, including a lack of access to mental health services.

Too often, it seems like mental health and well-being is perceived to be something that only a privileged few get to achieve. We don't believe this -- and neither does our guest Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble. She’s the founder of the mental health nonprofit The AAKOMA Project, which provides mental health outreach and care for youth of color.

Given that 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24, the team has its work cut out for them. In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette talks with Dr. Alfiee about the mental health issues that young adults are facing, particularly in marginalized communities. As a psychologist and researcher, she presents strategies to help reduce mental health disparities in underserved populations. The two also discuss how to combat cultural stigmas and normalize the conversation around mental health across different generations.

Today is a National Day of Service and Remembrance to ensure that we strive to make our world a better place, and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11th. As we are wrestling with the current racial and social injustices, sometimes these issues can seem so much larger than our personal impact. In this episode of Financial Fridays, we share some of the 11 Good Deeds suggested by 911Day.org that you can consider taking on to demonstrate your recognition of this important day in our history.

How often when someone asks you: "How are you?" do you respond honestly? Do you share what's really going on with you? In this week's Unplugged segment, in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Week, Coach Colette discusses her challenges to authentically share her feelings and experiences, especially as a content creator in the public realm. She also offers resources to support you on your mental health journey, including the #HowAreYouReally campaign created by the Mental Health Coalition to amplify real stories that embrace a wide variety of mental health experiences.
