EP 157 - Does Insulin Make You Gain Weight? Causes and management for diabetics
Insulin therapy, a treatment for diabetes, can cause unwanted weight gain. This episode will cover the link between diabetes, insulin, and gaining weight, as well as how to manage and minimize weight gain. Insulin is a natural hormone produced in the pancreas. When we eat, our pancreas releases insulin to help our bodies produce energy from sugars. Insulin is a vital part of metabolism. Without it, your body would cease to function. Weight gain is a common symptom of diabetes. Compared with people who do not have diabetes, young adults with type-1 diabetes have a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese. To wit, according to World Health Organization estimates (2003), 90 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are either overweight or obese. EP 156 - Choosing Healthy Fats | Heart Health, Brain Health, and Fat Loss
In today’s episode we’ll cover everything you need to know about dietary fats, including how to make healthier choices without sacrificing taste. By understanding the difference between good and bad fats and how to include more healthy fat in our diets, we can improve our mood, boost our energy and well-being, and even lose unwanted body fat, easier. “Good” fats Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are known as the “good fats” because they are good for your heart, your cholesterol, and your overall health. These fats can help to: Lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Lower bad LDL cholesterol levels, while increasing good HDL. Prevent abnormal heart rhythms. Lower triglycerides associated with heart disease and fight inflammation. Lower blood pressure. Prevent atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries). Food sources include: Avocados Olives and olive oil Raw Nuts and nuts oils: almonds, walnuts, macadamia, pecans Raw Seeds and seed oils: Sunflower, sesame, pumpkin seeds, Flaxseed Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines) and fish oil Soybean and safflower oil “Bad” fats Artificial trans fats are considered dangerous. This is the worst type of fat since it not only raises bad LDL cholesterol but also lowers good HDL levels. Artificial trans fats can also create inflammation, are linked to heart disease, stroke, and other chronic conditions and contribute to insulin resistance. Aim to eliminate it from your diet. Primary sources of Trans fat include: Commercially-baked pastries, cookies, doughnuts, muffins, cakes, pizza dough Packaged snack (crackers, microwave popcorn, chips) margarine and vegetable shortening Deep Fried foods (French fries, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, breaded fish) Anything containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, even if it claims to be “trans fat-free” Saturated fat. While not as harmful as trans fat, saturated fat can raise bad LDL cholesterol and too much can negatively impact heart health, so it’s best limited in our diets as well. Ep 24 - You're gauging your progress all wrong. Fix it.
My mom is reading this right now, and I'm about to talk about her. I had to tell her recently to please stop calling me to inform me about the 2-3 pounds that she lost or gained. Why? It was infuriating. Here is a woman who WANTS to make progress, but who ONLY makes behavior reports when she does WELL, and conversely, makes progress reports about weight lost and gained. Let me repeat that: She only tells when when she does good behaviors, never when she's baking cakes. So all I ever here is "I'm on it." But then I get reports of gaining 2-3 and losing 2-3 pounds. I saw an interview in which Larry talked about the problem with the show being that he plays a character of his same name. When people meet hime they expect the caricature to be real.
