EP 201 | Ready to Retire? What Happens to Your Business Now? | Guest: Stephen Shortt

So you’re ready to retire from your business. What happens now? Do you have someone in mind to inherit the business? Do your children even want the business? These questions and more will be answered in today’s conversation!

On this episode, Chad Lingafelt chats with Stephen Shortt, a succession planning coach from Dublin, Ireland. Stephen not only has the smoothest voice with a beautiful accent, but also shares some insights that can help you decide what needs to happen before

People hate thinking about the finality of life, but ignoring what needs to happen when you are ready to retire or pass the business on can be a costly mistake.

Stephen shares the 4 possibilities that can happen to a Family Business:

  1. Shut Down: Business shuts down once the leader leaves or steps down
  2. Sell: The leader sells to an investor
  3. Survive: Someone put in place just to keep going (just a painful stop)
  4. Scale: The right people in right positions to scale and grow the business

Shift thinking from being the hero of everyone’s story to being the mentor for the next generation.

This is a great conversation for any business owner that is looking to the future and what needs to transpire once they decide to retire.

EP 197 | Looking to Sell? What is Your Business Worth? | Guest: Tony Hokanson & Lars Johnston

EP 197 | Looking to Sell? What is Your Business Worth? | Guest: Tony Hokanson & Lars Johnston

Chad Lingafelt chats with Lars Johnston of Calgary Lock & Safe & Tony Hokanson of Assured Security all about Business Acquisitions.

Today we are getting a little niche within the Security Industry with our expert panel to talk about Acquisitions.

Are you are looking to retire and want to evaluate your business to see what it would be worth in the open market? We are diving in head first with tactile tips you need to know to find out What’s it Worth!

Chad, Lars, and Tony have all experienced multiple business acquisitions (at least 5ish) and today they share their knowledge and experience with you! Buckle in for a in depth conversation so full of information about acquiring a business that we had to split it into 2 episodes. (See Part 1 to learn how to acquire a business).

In part 2, we discuss some of the things you need to consider when preparing your business to be sold. Are you looking for an exit? Tired of dealing with the day to day struggles and headaches that come along with running a business?

Good News! You’re in the right place today!

We learn about Free Cash Flow (Discounted Cash Flow) and what is it worth on the open market and to the buyer.

Purchasers are looking to make 20-30% over what they are paying the bank to make it worth the risk. Here are some tips that you need to know to get your business in order so it would be appealing to purchase!

  1. First Thing you Need to know is Your Business is Only Worth what someone will Pay for it!
  2. Get Your Books in Order! If it’s not on the books, does it have value? You have to have clean financials and show profitability before it will be touched by a potential buyer.
  3. Inventory List: Do you even know what you have - Is it a pile of stuff in a warehouse that requires someone 100 hours to audit? Is it listed and categorized?
  4. Assets: Vehicles, Equipment, Real Estate - All must be accounted for, Itemized, and a current Value noted.
  5. Cash & AR: Always Negotiable and not always acquired in a sale.

Do you have an emotional attachment to your business? Are you basing the sale on Dedicated Customer Base and “Potential”? These are signs that your business might not be structured in a way that it can even be acquired.

This is a great conversation for folks looking to sell their business to a potential buyer.

EP 190 | How To Effectively Communicate with Confidence | Guest: Robert Kennedy III

Chad Lingafelt chats with Robert Kennedy III, Co-Founder and President of Kennetik Kommunications, author of several books, and speaker.

Robert joins us from Maryland and we talk about how to effectively communicate with confidence whether it’s within your personal relationships or in the workplace.

Robert shares three layers of understanding to effectively communicate:

  • Layer 1: Most of the time we are fighting for our perspective
  • Layer 2: Understanding the perspective of another
  • Layer 3: What is the result that we are after?

We talk about Creating Rules of Engagement in conversation:

  • What do we want out of this conversation?
  • What is the assignment?

We also learn that we need to understand what does someone need and what is their language and how we might be entering in with barriers or walls.

Robert talks more about the importance of setting intentionality around communication and discovering issues, things not completed after meetings, and the cause of us not getting things done. He also touches on missed deadlines and how to communicate about it while honoring your word.

This is a great conversation for business owners and leaders that are struggling with communication within their team or personal relationships.
