Color Decoded

The art inspiration for this episode is Crocodile Rock by Laura Stisser. This abstract acrylic-on-canvas work contains mysterious, indistinct, crocodillian figures flowing through the piece. Erin took inspiration from the work to  go on a treasure hunt for precious rocks and minerals that were used to create some of the first long-lasting blue and green pigments.  Take a trip from France, to Australia, to the Sinai Peninsula in search of information about rock-based pigments. The Hubble Space Telescope has taken breathtaking images of distant regions of space for much of the 30 years it has been in operation. One of the reasons these images can be so moving is that scientists generate beautiful colors alongside the data they collect when making observations. We will explore the kinds of images astronomers, physicists, and cosmologists can create with the information they collect!

Erin will reveal the 2020 Color of the Year from Pantone, paint companies, and the Color Marketing Group, an international association of color design professionals. This screen print renders snow in three different pinks which are reminiscent of the colors used in British military uniforms of the per-modern eras. Erin will explain the Guidelines that she uses in the Color Decoded episodes that feature specific art works to describe the works for an audience of listeners. The Guidelines advocate touching artworks and art analogs to learn about them and Erin suggests some places you might be able to find 3D models of art.
