The Coming Out Chronicles

The Coming Out Chronicles

By Nancy Shadlock

That moment: your palms are sweating, your stomach is churning and you're full-on scared. You have to tell someone something. About yourself. About your life. You don't know how they'll take it. You fear the worst. That's a "coming out" moment. Whether you're LGBTQ2S+ or not, you'll be inspired by Nancy Shadlock, CEO and Founder of Centered Life Coaching and her guests as they explore "coming out" stories of all kinds. Listen in weekly as people talk about coming out as trans, as a sex therapist, or share coming out about domestic abuse they've endured. Meet everyday people getting their brave on. We're all hiding in closets of our own making. Everyone has a different story. We are always evolving. We can shed what's no longer true for us. Be inspired by those who left the closet for something better and are willing to talk about it to help you find the courage to rock the next evolution of your own coming out story.

087: Learning to Trust your own Voice with Jennifer Knapp.

087: Learning to Trust your own Voice with Jennifer Knapp.

Jennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, author, speaker and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am (2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. Knapp received critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her “a rising star” and People Magazine describing her as “an uncommonly literate songwriter.”

As the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position created opportunities for national dialogue, including appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith, through which she continues to speak and perform nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues.

Today on the pod she speaks about:

  • Her Coming Out Story.
  • Her Alter Ego Big Delores.
  • What was really going on when she stepped away from music for a few years.
  • How heteronormativity has shaped our spirituality for so long.
  • Her next Coming Out Chapter.

Jennifer Knapp has been a very helpful resource to me in my own coming out, and I was delighted to be able to speak with her, and share our conversation with you. My hope is it will help you on your own coming out journeys. May we each find our own authentic voice... and share that with the world.

Richele McEwan speaks up about the domestic abuse she experienced growing up.  As a professional dancer she used Dance as a creative and powerful medium to express what happened.  Richele felt called to come out about this so that others who have experienced similar violence can be inspired to also transform their pain into beauty. This coming out has been a catalyst for other growth in her personal life and business, not to mention the lives of many people who were impacted by her very public sharing.  Richele is now inspiring others to let go of co-dependence and step into their bigger, healthier lives.
By owning her story she has been able to transform her life from a place of overwhelming darkness-- and underwhelming mediocrity-- to being truly extraordinary. She is now on a mission to help others discover the power of honouring their truest selves, so they too can #goalbigger.

Keturah joins Nancy in this episode to talk about coming out as the daughter of a Missionary, what it’s like to be a queer woman in the military and being a queer woman with religious beliefs. Keturah explains how her family have embraced and struggled with her coming out, and how her ongoing connection to her childhood experiences shape the actions she is taking today.

Being a young black American living in Kenya, Keturah grew up challenged by stereotypes and oppression, particularly while attending a mostly all-white religious boarding school. Keturah shares with Nancy what impact that has had on her, both in terms of her race and her sexuality.

Listen to Keturah talk about her own experiences, as a daughter, as a black woman, as a queer woman, as an adopted woman, and as a member of the military.

Ep 049: The Non-Binary Unicorn Advocate - Harris Eddie Hill

Harris is a 30-something-year-old nonbinary person from Hertfordshire, UK. Harris realized they were trans/nonbinary in their mid-twenties and have since made the commitment to becoming the advocate they needed, but never had. In this episode, Harris takes us through their journey of growing up queer and the roller coaster of self-discovery. Follow along as they share their feelings about gender, sexuality and body image, and how that has shifted and changed over time. Harris and Nancy talk about regression, reincarnation and the stories and ideas around them, exploring the more spiritual side of things. Harris gives us a different outlook on living and experiencing life as we know it and the challenging but rewarding experience of growing out of preconceived ideas. As an entrepreneur and world-renowned LGBTQ+ advocate, Harris is dedicated to making every story as familiar to us as our own.
